ABSTRACT

We present a comprehensive experimental rheological dataset for purified entangled ring polystyrenes and their blends with linear chains in nonlinear shear and elongation. In particular, data for shear stress growth coefficient, steady-state shear viscosity, and first and second normal stress differences are obtained and discussed as functions of shear rate as well as molecular parameters (molar mass, blend composition and decreasing molar mass of linear component in blend). Over the extended parameter range investigated, rings do not exhibit clear transient undershoot in shear, in contrast to their linear counterparts and ring-linear blends. For the latter, the size of the undershoot and respective strain appear to increase with shear rate. Universal scaling of strain at overshoot and fractional overshoot (ratio of maximum to steady-state shear stress growth coefficient) indicates subtle differences in the shear-rate dependence between rings and linear polymers or their blends. The shear thinning behaviour of pure rings yields a slope nearly identical to predictions (-4/7) of a recent shear slit model and molecular dynamics simulations. Data for the second normal stress difference are reported for rings and ring-linear blends. While N 2 is negative and its absolute value stays below that of N 1 , as for linear polymers, the ratio -N 2 /N 1 is unambiguously larger for rings compared to linear polymer solutions with the same number of entanglements (almost by factor of two), in agreement with recent non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. Further, -N 2 exhibits slightly weaker shear rate dependence compared to N 1 at high rates, and the respective power-law exponents can be rationalized in view of the slit model (3/7) and simulations (0.6), although further work is needed to unravel the molecular original of the observed behaviour. The comparison of shear and elongational stress growth coefficients for blends reflects the effect of ring-linear threading which leads to significant viscosity enhancement in elongation. Along the same lines, the elongational stress is much larger than the first normal stress in shear, and their ratio is much larger for rings and ring-linear blends compared to linear polymers. This conforms the interlocking scenario of rings and their important role in mechanically reinforcing linear matrices.

ABSTRACT

We present a systematic investigation of well-characterized, experimentally pure polystyrene (PS) rings with molar mass of 161 000 g/mol in dilute solutions. We measure the ring form factor at θ- and good-solvent conditions as well as in a polymeric solvent (linear PS of roughly comparable molar mass) by means of small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). Additional dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements support the SANS data and help elucidate the role of solvent quality and solution preparation. The results indicate the increase of ring dimensions as the solvent quality improves. Furthermore, the experimental form factors in both θ-solvent and linear matrix behave as ideal rings and are fully superimposable. The nearly Gaussian conformations of rings in a melt of linear chains provide evidence of threading of linear chains through rings. The latter result has implications for the dynamics of ring-linear polymer mixtures.

ABSTRACT

Octafunctionalized spherosilsesquioxanes (Q8M8(H)), decorated with Si-H functions, could be used to design, by coupling via hydrosilylation with α-methoxy-ω-undecenyl poly(ethylene oxide)s (PEOs), organic-inorganic nanocomposite structures. (1)H, (13)C, and (29)Si NMR; size exclusion chromatography; and Fourier transfrom infrared spectroscopy were used to follow the grafting reaction and determine the molar mass and the functionality of the different species. Hybrid star-shaped poly(ethylene oxide)s of precise molar mass and functionality could be isolated by fractional precipitation of the raw reaction product. Absolute molar masses of the purified star-shaped PEOs, calculated with the assumption of a functionality of 8, were comparable when measured by light scattering in methanol and by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Small-angle X-ray scattering was employed to determine their molecular and structural characteristics, representing the versatility and innovative aspect to this study. Both differential scanning calorimetry and optical microscopy were utilized to elaborate and analyze the thermal properties and crystallization, respectively, of the hybrid stars. Further ongoing work is being carried out currently to investigate and foresee the use of longer PEO branches onto the core.

ABSTRACT

Four calix[4]arenes containing either one or two ylidic -C(O)CH=PPh3 moieties anchored at p-phenolic carbon atoms were prepared starting from cone-25,27-dipropoxycalix[4]arene (1): 1,3-alternate-5,17-bis(2-triphenylphosphoranylideneacetyl)-25,26,27,28-tetrapropoxycalix[4]arene (12), 1,3-alternate-5-(2-triphenylphosphoranylideneacetyl)-25,26,27,28-tetrapropoxycalix[4]arene (13), cone-5-(2-triphenylphosphoranylideneacetyl)-25,27-dihydroxy-26,28-dipropoxycalix[4]arene (14), cone-5,17-bis(2-triphenylphosphoranylideneacetyl)-25,27-dihydroxy-26,28-dipropoxycalix[4]arene (15). All the ylides were shown to be suitable for the preparation of SHOP-type complexes, i.e. of molecules containing [NiPh{Ph2PCH=C(O)R}(PPh3)] subunits (R = calixarene fragment). The monometallic complexes, namely those obtained from the monophosphorus ylides 13 and 14, proved to be efficient ethylene oligomerisation or polymerisation catalysts. At 80 degrees C, they displayed significantly better activities than the prototype [NiPh{Ph(2)PCH=C(O)Ph}(PPh3)], hence reflecting the beneficial role of the bulky calixarene substituent. The systems derived from the two ylides 12 and 15, both containing two convergent ylidic moieties, resulted in lower activities, the proximity of the two catalytic centres facilitating an intramolecular deactivation pathway during the period of catalyst activation. For the first time, the solid-state structure of a complex containing two "NiPh(P,O)(PPh3)" units as well as that of a SHOP-type complex having two linked phosphorus units were determined.

ABSTRACT

The present work discusses the grafting by electron beam irradiation of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) star-shaped polymers onto porous expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (EXPTFE) surfaces. The resulting materials are intended to combine the good biocompatible properties of PEO with the outstanding mechanical properties of PTFE. The star-shaped PEOs were synthesized via anionic polymerization. 3 Mev electron beam irradiation was applied to graft these PEO stars onto porous EXPTFE surfaces. The hydrophobic EXPTFE surface had to be pre-modified with N-vinylpyrrolidone. ESCA was used to quantify the amount of grafted star-shaped PEO. Unmodified EXPTFE surfaces are well known, when implanted in a body, to be rapidly covered by a layer of cells and fibrin. The EXPTFE coated with PEO were implanted in the peritoneal cavity of rats (or under the back skin). This implantation did not induce any inflammation reactions and SEM analysis had attested the absence of adsorbed cells and fibrin. The glucose diffusion properties of these membranes were studied by a lag time analysis method and compared to those of pure PEO hydrogels. As expected, glucose diffuses through the hydrogel coated membrane and diffusion is not affected by the presence of the EXPTFE membrane.

ABSTRACT

The binding properties of two large diphosphines, cone-5,17-dibromo-11,23-bis(diphenylphosphino)-25,26,27,28-tetrapropoxycalix[4]arene (1) and cone-5,17-bis(diphenylphosphino)-25,26,27,28-tetrapropoxycalix[4]arene (2) toward Ni(II) centres have been investigated. Whatever the starting complex, NiBr2 or [NiCp]BF4, quantitative formation of a chelate complex was observed, illustrating the preorganisation of the ligands. An X-ray structure determination was carried out for [NiCp1]BF4 which revealed that the nickel atom is positioned to one side of the calixarene axis, the PNiP plane being roughly parallel to the calixarene reference plane. The molecule has C(1) symmetry in the solid state, a feature which is also observed in solution at low temperature. As shown by variable-temperature 1H and 31P NMR studies, the complex undergoes two distinct motions: 1) a fan-like swinging of the coordination plane which displaces the metal from one side of the calixarene axis to the other, a motion during which the PNiP angle is likely to undergo a significant enlargement; 2) a rapid oscillation of each PPh2 unit about the corresponding Ni--P bond. In the latter dynamics the two endo-oriented PPh rings alternately occupy the calixarene entry. The two flexible ligands were assessed in ethylene oligomerisation. Activation with methylaluminoxane of the paramagnetic complexes [NiBr2.(1 or 2)] afforded highly active ethylene dimerisation catalysts, with turnover frequencies up to 10(6) (mol C2H4) (mol Ni)(-1) h(-1). The selective formation of 1-butene can be rationally controlled by using low catalyst concentrations.
