ABSTRACT

Background: Echocardiographic cardiac parameters in the prone position are usually obtained with an esophageal probe. The feasibility of obtaining them by means of a transthoracic approach is unknown. Objective: Estimating the feasibility to obtain parameters of the right ventricle by transthoracic echocardiography in prone position on the subject. Methods: Pilot design of consecutive case series without cardiopulmonary disease. Demographic, vital signs and echocardiographic variables were defined in the ventral initial, prone and ventral final decubitus positions. The data are shown with averages and standard deviations, and frequencies and percentages according to the variable. The differences between the positions were calculated with ANOVA of repeated samples and adjustment of Bonferroni test. Intra-subject variability was obtained by the Bland-Altman procedure and its 95% confidence interval. Results: We studied 50 subjects, 44 (88%) males, age 30 ± 6 years and body mass index 25.65 ± 2.71 kg/m2. Tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) and S'-wave were measured 100% of the time. The vital signs and echocardiographic variables according to the position had differences in: heart rate (74 ± 9 vs. 77 ± 9 vs. 75 ± 8 beats/min), partial oxygen saturation (94.40 ± 1.70 vs. 96.64 ± 1.79 vs. 95.32 ± 1.36%) and mean systemic blood pressure (65.33 ± 5.38 vs. 67.69 ± 6.31 vs. 65.29 ± 5.62 mmHg); TAPSE (19.74 ± 3.24 vs. 21.60 ± 2.97 vs. 19.44 ± 2.84 mm), mean difference (bias) 0 (2, -2.0) and S'-wave (13.52 ± 1.87 vs. 15.02 ± 2.09 vs. 13.46 ± 1.55 cm/s), mean difference (bias) -0.46 (1.21, -2.14) respectively. Conclusions: Obtaining right ventricle parameters by transthoracic ecocardiopraphy is feasible in the prone position.

ABSTRACT

Na2Ti3O7 is considered a promising negative electrode for Na-ion batteries; however, poor capacity retention has been reported and the stability of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) could be one of the main actors of this underperformance. The composition and evolution of the SEI in Na2Ti3O7 electrodes is hereby studied by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). To overcome typical XPS limitations in the photoelectron energy assignments, the analysis of the Auger parameter is here proposed for the first time in battery materials characterization. We have found that the electrode/electrolyte interface formed upon discharge, mostly composed by carbonates and semicarbonates (Na2CO3, NaCO3R), fluorides (NaF), chlorides (NaCl) and poly(ethylene oxide)s, is unstable upon electrochemical cycling. Additionally, solid state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies prove the reaction of the polyvinylidene difluoride (PVdF) binder with sodium. The powerful approach used in this work, namely Auger parameter study, enables us to correctly determine the composition of the electrode surface layer without any interference from surface charging or absolute binding energy calibration effects. As a result, the suitability for Na-ion batteries of binders and electrolytes widely used for Li-ion batteries is questioned here.

ABSTRACT

H2Ti3O7 was prepared as a single phase material by ionic exchange from Na2Ti3O7. The complete ionic exchange was confirmed by (1)H and (23)Na solid state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). The atomic positions of H2Ti3O7 were obtained from the Rietveld refinement of powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and neutron diffraction experimental data, the latter collected at two different wavelengths to precisely determine the hydrogen atomic positions in the structure. All H(+) cations are hydrogen bonded to two adjacent [Ti3O7](2-) layers leading to the gliding of the layers and lattice centring with respect to the parent Na2Ti3O7. In contrast with a previous report where protons were located in two different positions of H2Ti3O7, 3 types of proton positions were found. Two of the three types of proton are bonded to the only oxygen linked to a single titanium atom forming an H-O-H angle close to that of the water molecule. H2Ti3O7 is able to electrochemically insert Na(+). The electrochemical insertion of sodium into H2Ti3O7 starts with a solid solution regime of the C-centred phase. Then, between 0.6 and 1.2 inserted Na(+) the reaction proceeds through a two phase reaction and a plateau at 1.3 V vs. Na(+)/Na is observed in the voltage-composition curve. The second phase resembles the primitive Na2Ti3O7 cell as detected by in situ PXRD. Upon oxidation, from 0.9 to 2.2 V, the PXRD pattern remains mostly unchanged probably due to H(+) removal instead of Na(+), with the capacity quickly fading upon cycling. Conditioning H2Ti3O7 for two cycles at 0.9-2.2 V before cycling in the 0.05-1.6 V range yields similar specific capacity and better retention than the original Na2Ti3O7 in the same voltage range.

ABSTRACT

Newcastle disease, one of the most important health problems that affects the poultry industry around the world, is caused by virulent strains of Newcastle disease virus. Newcastle disease virus is considered to be endemic in several countries in the Americas, including Mexico. In order to control Newcastle disease outbreaks and spread, intensive vaccination programs, which include vaccines formulated with strains isolated at least 60 years ago, have been established. These vaccines are dissimilar in genotype to the virulent Newcastle disease viruses that had been circulating in Mexico until 2008. Here, 28 isolates obtained between 2008 and 2011 from different regions of Mexico from free-living wild birds, captive wild birds, and poultry were phylogenetically and biologically characterized in order to study the recent epidemiology of Newcastle disease viruses in Mexico. Here we demonstrate that, until recently, virulent viruses from genotype V continued to circulate and evolve in the country. All of the Newcastle disease viruses of low virulence, mostly isolated from nonvaccinated free-living wild birds and captive wild birds, were highly similar to LaSota (genotype II) and PHY-LMV42 (genotype I) vaccine strains. These findings, together with the discovery of two virulent viruses at the Mexican zoo, suggest that Newcastle disease viruses may be escaping from poultry into the environment.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Antisense oligodeoxynucleotides (AS-ODNs) are a promising alternative for the cure of many diseases because of their in vivo specificity and stability. However, AS-ODNs have a strong dependence on the target mRNA structure making necessary extensive in vivo testing. There is, therefore, a need to develop assays to rapidly evaluate in vivo ODN performance. METHODS: We report a simple and inexpensive bacterial reporter system for the rapid in vivo evaluation of AS-ODNs directed against human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV-16) based on the destruction of a chimeric CFP mRNA using the reported HPV-16 nt 410-445 target. RESULTS: In vitro RNaseH assays confirmed target RNA accessibility after AS-ODN treatment. Expression of CFP in Escherichia coli BL21(DE3) with pGST-TSd2-CFP plasmid containing HPV-16 nt 410-445 target linked to CFP was blocked by transformed antisense PS-ODNs but not by two different scrambled ODN controls. CONCLUSIONS: A correlation was observed between bacterial CFP downregulation with the HPV-16 E6/E7 mRNA downregulation and the inhibition of anchorage-independent growth of HPV-16 containing cells suggesting that inhibition of HPV-16 E6/E7 expression by AS-ODNs directed against 410-445 target in cervical tumor cells can be tested in bacterial models.
