ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was the investigation of plasma magnesium, calcium, copper and zinc and erythrocyte magnesium levels in patients with paranoid schizophrenia and the influence of the therapy with two antipsychotic drugs (haloperidol and risperidone) on these concentrations. METHODS: We investigated the influence of treatment with haloperidol and risperidoneon plasma and erythrocyte magnesium and on plasmatic levels of zinc, calcium and copper on hospitalized 56 patients diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia (DSM IV). RESULTS: Our data indicate a decrease of erythrocyte magnesium levels in schizophrenic patients (4.82 +/- 3.1 mg/L vs. 59.2 +/- 1.1 mg/L in control group, p < 0.01). The plasma level of magnesium was unchanged (18.9 +/- 2.17 mg/L in schizophrenic patients vs. 18.26 +/- 1.9 mg/L in control group). CONCLUSIONS: We consider plasma Cu(2+)/erythrocyte Mg(2+) and plasma Cu(2+)/Zn(2+) ratio two important biological markers of the acute paranoid schizophrenia.

ABSTRACT

Assuming that Ca+2 and Mg+2 play an important role in the cell (especially the neuronal and muscular ones) membrane excitability, this paper presents the place that the paraclinical specific investigations have in the proper diagnose of normal calcium serum level hypo-magnesium spasmophilia. A number of 52 patients presenting significant clinical spasmophilia, of age between 21 and 55 years old, from different professions and social classes, were selected for this study. Paraclinical investigations (spectrophotometry) showed a normal serum calcium level (an average of 9.22 mg%); also, a decrease of Mg+2 serum level (an average of 1.41 mg%) and normal levels for Na+ (3.04 g/l) and K+ (0.21 g/l). The electrophysiological investigations (EMG, EEG, VCN m, EKG) performed showed, on the EMG recordings, in 85% of the cases the presence of the typical spasmophilic repetitive discharges, increased when using compression ischemia and 3 minutes hyperventilation, while on the EEG recordings, most patients demonstrated the presence of diffuse or mainly frontal lobe cortical bioelectrical activity alteration, either in spontaneous conditions or after specific stimulation (3 minutes hyperventilation or SLI). The muscle bioelectrical activity was analyzed by mean of EMG recordings--a decrease of VCN m was detected on the SPE nerve (34.4 m/s) and also on the SPI nerve (34.2 m/s) The EKG recordings performed showed in 5% of the cases the presence of the ventricular repolarization disturbances (flat T waves). After receiving a proper treatment which included oral administration of calcium and magnesium gluconolactate, magnesium gluconolactate with B6 vitamin or Trimagant, there were important changes of all the studied parameters and so, as a specific therapy, we recommend the use of Mg+2 compounds, because it demonstrates a significant improvement of the clinical symptoms in spasmophilia and has no danger to precipitate in the body as Ca+2 exceeding does.

ABSTRACT

An epidemiological screening of 8011 industrial workers and 7090 pupils made possible the active detection of some risk factors carriers and of those individuals with borderline essential arterial hypertension (BEAHT) and essential arterial hypertension disease (EAHTD). It was noticed that the association of 2-4 risk factors is more common in the subjects with BEAHT or EAHTD, fact indicating their increased aggressivity in the various types of associations present in the same carrier. In the worker series a prevalence of 16.2%-18.0% for BEAHT and 6.3%-7.1% for EAHTD as compared to 4.3%-6.0% and 4.9%-5.3%, respectively, in the pupil series were recorded. The epidemiological screening had a strong educational effect, reflected in an increased cooperation of the screened population, and revealed the fact that the risk factor carrier state and the increased arterial pressure levels were ignored, at long term, by 50-90% of the investigated subjects.

ABSTRACT

Starting from the hypothesis of a possible protection exerted by oligominerals in cardiovascular diseases, 660 water sources were analysed as to their content in mineral matter. It resulted that the population drinks a very hard water with a low content in zinc, manganese, copper and chromium oligominerals. By correlating these characteristics with the mortality rate by cardiovascular diseases, low in the territory under study, it became evident that no association between these factors can be made, the relative protection being probably due to other factors.

ABSTRACT

The drinking water from wells in 55 villages of Iasi district was investigated in order to estimate the intake of mineral substances. The results pointed out that the content in oligo elements of water in these villages (250,000 inhabitants) was below required minimum (in 91.18% of villages for zinc, in 81.48% for manganese, in 92.7% for copper and in 98.80% for chromium).

ABSTRACT

When Aloran (Al) was administered to normal or orchiectomized animals, the adult ones proved to be more sensitive, most normal animals (77.7%) developing a DAla and the remainder (22.3%) a DAlc, while of the orchiectomized animals 66.6 developed a DAlc and 33.4% presented a decreased glucose tolerance. 33.4% of the young normal developed a DAla and 66.7% a DAlc, while of the young orchiectomized ones 33.4% presented a DAlc and 66.7% a STG. No matter of age, orchiectomy induced an increased resistance to the various action of Al. Glycemia and lipid fractions, especially LT and TG were significantly elevated in the normal animals with DAla and in the young orchiectomized animals with DAlc. Insulinemia was elevated in most young animals, except for the orchiectomized ones with DAlc, in which it decreased. Serum cholesterol was the most markedly elevated in the adult animals belonging to the group ACTH + D2 + Al, form DAlc. Histopathologically, in this last group degenerative lesions and microcalcifications in aorta and interstitial infiltrate and homogenization of myocardial fibres in the myocardium were found.

ABSTRACT

The adhesive cutaneous pharmaceutical forms aimed to local action release the drug substance in view of a dermatological, traumatological, antirheumatic, cosmetic action. Two such preparations were obtained and their stability, consistency and pH were determined. The "in vitro" tests of their bioavailability revealed the dynamics of calcium ions release according to the associations of each preparation. The bioavailability determined by evaluating the pharmacological response demonstrated the antiinflammatory action obtained by the association of calcium ions with the components extracted from poplar muds. The therapeutical efficiency of the studied preparations has proved in the treatment of some sport injuries.
