ABSTRACT

Wax appearance temperature (WAT), defined as the temperature at which the first solid paraffin crystal appears in a crude oil, is one of the key flow assurance indicators in the oil industry. Although there are several commonly-used experimental techniques to determine WAT, none provides unambiguous molecular-level information to characterize the phase transition between the homogeneous fluid and the underlying solid phase. Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations employing the statistical associating fluid theory (SAFT) force field are used to interrogate the incipient solidification states of models for long-chain alkanes cooled from a melt to an arrested state. We monitor the phase change of pure long chain n-alkanes: tetracosane (C24H50) and triacontane (C30H62), and an 8-component surrogate n-alkane mixture (C12-C33) built upon the compositional information of a waxy crude. Comparison to Diffusion Ordered Spectroscopy Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (DOSY NMR) results allows the assessment of the limitations of the coarse-grained models proposed. We show that upon approach to freezing, the heavier components restrict their motion first while the lighter ones retain their mobility and help fluidize the mixture. We further demonstrate that upon sub-cooling of long n-alkane fluids and mixtures, a discontinuity arises in the slope of the self-diffusion coefficient with decreasing temperature, which can be employed as a marker for the appearance of an arrested state commensurate with conventional WAT measurements.

ABSTRACT

Molecular dynamics simulations are employed to develop a theoretical model to predict the fluid-solid contact angle as a function of wall-sliding speed incorporating thermal fluctuations. A liquid bridge between counter-sliding walls is studied, with liquid-vapour interface-tracking, to explore the impact of wall-sliding speed on contact angle. The behaviour of the macroscopic contact angle varies linearly over a range of capillary numbers beyond which the liquid bridge pinches off, a behaviour supported by experimental results. Nonetheless, the liquid bridge provides an ideal test case to study molecular scale thermal fluctuations, which are shown to be well described by Gaussian distributions. A Langevin model for contact angle is parametrised to incorporate the mean, fluctuation and auto-correlations over a range of sliding speeds and temperatures. The resulting equations can be used as a proxy for the fully-detailed molecular dynamics simulation allowing them to be integrated within a continuum-scale solver.

ABSTRACT

We present a continuous pseudo-hard-sphere potential based on a cut-and-shifted Mie (generalized Lennard-Jones) potential with exponents (50, 49). Using this potential one can mimic the volumetric, structural, and dynamic properties of the discontinuous hard-sphere potential over the whole fluid range. The continuous pseudo potential has the advantage that it may be incorporated directly into off-the-shelf molecular-dynamics code, allowing the user to capitalise on existing hardware and software advances. Simulation results for the compressibility factor of the fluid and solid phases of our pseudo hard spheres are presented and compared both to the Carnahan-Starling equation of state of the fluid and published data, the differences being indistinguishable within simulation uncertainty. The specific form of the potential is employed to simulate flexible chains formed from these pseudo hard spheres at contact (pearl-necklace model) for m(c) = 4, 5, 7, 8, 16, 20, 100, 201, and 500 monomer segments. The compressibility factor of the chains per unit of monomer, m(c), approaches a limiting value at reasonably small values, m(c) < 50, as predicted by Wertheim's first order thermodynamic perturbation theory. Simulation results are also presented for highly asymmetric mixtures of pseudo hard spheres, with diameter ratios of 3:1, 5:1, 20:1 over the whole composition range.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Our aim was to determine the value of 99mTc-Sestamibi scanning as functional detection method of P-glycoprotein (Pgp) blockade by PSC 833 in solid tumour patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Day 1 and day 4 after 2,200 mg orally administered PSC 833 the tumour area was scanned after intravenous (i.v.) administration of 400 MBq 99mTc-Sestamibi. In tumours with net 99mTc-Sestamibi uptake and in the hepatic region K-efflux was determined. Whole blood was analyzed for 99mTc-Sestamibi, and PSC 833 levels. RESULTS: Fourteen patients were included. In the only Pgp-positive tumour with positive 99mTc-Sestamibi scanning K-efflux of 99mTc-Sestamibi decreased significantly after PSC 833 intake. A net inhibition of liver efflux of Sestamibi after PSC 833 intake was observed in all evaluable patients. PSC 833 blood levels were all above 2 mg/L during scanning; 99mTc-Sestamibi blood levels post versus pre PSC 833 were unchanged. CONCLUSIONS: PSC 833 induced modulation of K-efflux of 99mTc-Sestamibi in a Pgp positive tumour and in all patients in the liver.

ABSTRACT

A rare case of pseudosarcomatous fasciitis of the breast is presented. Both the clinical examination and the mammographic findings led us to expect a malignant lesion. Fine needle aspiration biopsy cytology, however, was negative, with the cells observed indicating a benign lesion. The benignity was proven by histologic examination of the extirpated nodule. The usefulness of aspiration cytology in the diagnosis of this entity and the need for a combined methodology in the diagnosis of breast tumors are emphasized.

ABSTRACT

Blood pressures were measured in a sample of Johannesburg Blacks consisting of 5 018 men and 5 028 women attending the local Labour Bureau. Blood pressure levels correlated positively with age and body mass and were higher in males than females when weight was taken into account. Hypertension was common in both sexes and at most ages; in the 4th decade about one-third of men and women had phase 4 diastolic pressures greater than 90 mmHg. Correlations of blood pressure with a number of social variables were generally unimpressive. There was some evidence that blood pressure was inversely related to educational status and was higher in young adults who (a) lived apart from their families compared with those who lived in family units, and (b) grew up in a rural area and then migrated to Johannesburg compared with those who had lived in Johannesburg all their lives.
