ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Zinc is found in abundance in the human brain. Patients with depression may have decreased consumption of food sources rich in zinc, and zinc supplementation may have a potential influence on depressive symptoms. However, clinical trials on the effect of zinc supplementation in depression are limited. The objective of the present study was to determine the effect of zinc supplementation on efficacy of antidepressant therapy. Furthermore, the effect of zinc on plasma levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), and brain-derived neurotrophic factor-a (BDNF-a) were assessed. DESIGN: A single-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of zinc supplementation was conducted in patients with DSM-IV major depression. Forty-four patients of both sexes aged 18-55 years were recruited for this study from a university hospital. The zinc-supplemented group received zinc sulfate (25 mg elemental Zn/day) orally in addition to their selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressants for 12 weeks. Symptoms were evaluated using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) on arrival, weeks 6 and 12. Plasma levels of IL-6, TNF-α and BDNF-a were measured at baseline and at the end of study. RESULTS: Twenty patients in zinc group and 17 patients in placebo groups completed the study. At baseline, there were no significant differences in any variable between the patients allocated to receive placebo and those taking zinc supplement. Zinc supplementation significantly reduced HDRS compared to placebo (P < 0.01 at 12th week). No significant differences were observed in plasma levels of IL-6, TNF-α, and BDNF-a between zinc-supplemented and placebo-supplemented group. CONCLUSION: Zinc supplementation in conjunction with antidepressant drugs might be beneficial for reducing depressive symptoms. However, its effect does not appear to be mediated through impact of zinc on inflammatory processes.

BACKGROUND: It is known that fish oil consumption decreases incidence of cardiovascular disease. However, some studies showed that it increases atherosclerosis as it does not get completely metabolized by the liver. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of fish oil on aortic atherosclerosis, hepatic steatosis and serum lipids in rats. METHODS: Twenty pregnant Wistar rats were fed with a fish oil-containing diet or standard diet (containing soy bean oil) during pregnancy and lactation and the pups were weaned onto the same diet. Fasting blood samples, hepatic and aortic specimens were taken from pups on day 70 postnatal. Data were analyzed with SPSS software, using t-test, Mann-Whitney test and Spearman correlation coefficient. Values of p < 0.05 were considered significant. RESULTS: Medians for fatty streak in aorta of fish oil fed and soy bean oil fed pups were 1.00 and 0.00, respectively, and P value was 0.042. Also, medians for ductular cell hyperplasia of liver in fish oil fed and soy bean oil fed pups were 1.00 and 0.00, respectively, and P value was 0.014. Total cholesterol in pups fed with fish oil was 52.20 mg/dl and in pups fed with soy bean oil was 83.90 mg/dl (p < 0.00) and for low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) values were 8.79 mg/dl and 13.16 mg/dl, respectively (p = 0.031). CONCLUSIONS: According to the results of the present study, a diet which provided 15.9% of energy from fish oil as the only source of dietary fat, induced aortic atherosclerosis as well as hepatic steatosis in Wistar rat, although it decreased total cholesterol and LDL-C.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus is a sense of sound perception in absence of an external source which can affect life quality. Different conditions may lead to tinnitus including metabolic disorders such as dyslipidemia. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of dyslipidemia among Iranian patients with idiopathic tinnitus. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study in which prevalence of dyslipidemia in fasting state and its subclasses were assessed in 1043 tinnitus patients aged 12-90 years who referred to Rasool Akram Hospital, Tehran, Iran, 2006-2009. Data was summarized by SPSS software version 17 and one sample t-test and Chi-Square test were applied to analyze the results. P less than 0.05 were considered significant. RESULTS: The most prevalent type of dyslipidemia was hypercholesterolemia with the frequency of 14.4% followed by low HDL-C with the frequency of 12.8%. Mean of total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C and triglyceride levels in all patients were not greater than general population. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the results of the present study, there might be no need to check the serum lipid profile in tinnitus patients. We recommend further studies to assess both fasting and postprandial serum lipid profile in patients with idiopathic tinnitus. Simultaneous investigation of their dietary intake is also suggested.
