ABSTRACT

Thallium (Tl) as a prominent priority contaminant in aquatic environment necessitates rigorous regulation. However, limited horizon devotes the impact of selective oxidation on the process of thallium purification. In this study, selective active radical of singlet oxygen (1O2) was continually generated for Tl(Ⅰ) oxidation accomplished with efficient Tl(Ⅲ) immobilization using iron-driven copper oxide (CuFe)/peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Fe-doping changed the active center of electronic structure for enhancing the catalytic and adsorptive reactivities, and installed magnetism for solid-liquid separation. Rapid reaction rate (0.253 min-1) coupled with vigorous elimination efficiency (98.32%) relied on electrostatic attraction, surface complexation, and H-bond interaction. EPR and XPS analyses demonstrated that the synergistic effects of ≡ Cu(Ⅰ)/≡Cu(Ⅱ) and ≡ Fe(Ⅲ)/≡Fe(Ⅱ) redounded to the sustained generation of 1O2 through the pathway of PMS → •O2- → 1O2, and 1O2 exploited an advantage to selectively oxidize Tl(Ⅰ) to Tl(Ⅲ). 3D isosurface cubic charts revealed that the immobilizing ability of Tl(Ⅲ) hydrate for CuFe was notably superior to that of Tl(Ⅲ) hydrate for CuO and Tl(Ⅰ) hydrate for CuO/CuFe, which further attested surface reactivity promoted stable immobilization form. This work develops the continuous generation of 1O2 and stable immobilization with the goal of efficiently cleansing Tl-containing wastewater.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Depression is a life-threatening mental health problem. Various factors have been demonstrated to be associated with depressive symptoms, including negative life events (NLEs) and alexithymia. A retrospective study was conducted to investigate the relationship among negative life events, alexithymia, and depression symptoms in a psychosomatic outpatient sample in China. METHODS: A total of 2747 outpatients (aged 18 - 65) were included in this investigation. The Life Events Scale (LES), Toronto alexithymia scale (TAS-26), and 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) were used to assess NLEs, alexithymia, and depressive symptoms, respectively. A stepwise regression analysis model was established to investigate the relationship among alexithymia, NLEs, and depressive symptoms. RESULTS: Overall, 67.0% of the patient sample had a PHQ-9 score of 10 or higher. The stepwise regression analysis model showed a well-fitted model, in which NLEs and alexithymia explain a total of 34.2% of the variance of depressive symptoms in these participants. NLEs (ß = 0.256, p < 0.001) and dimensions of alexithymia (difficult describing feelings (ß = 0.192, p < 0.001) and identifying feelings (ß = 0.308, p < 0.001)) were positively correlated with symptoms of depression. CONCLUSIONS: Previous studies have confirmed the correlation between NLEs and depression, alexithymia and depression, respectively. In our study, we used a stepwise regression model to explain the relationship among those variables simultaneously, and found that NLEs and alexithymia could function as predictors of depressive symptoms. Based on this discovery, alexithymia-focused treatment strategies could be alternative in depressive patients with alexithymia, but this remains to be verified in the future.

ABSTRACT

Light pollution is a potential risk for intestinal health in humans and animals. The gut microbiota is associated with the development of intestinal inflammation induced by extended exposure to light, but the underlying mechanism is not yet clear. The results of this study showed that extended exposure to light (18L:6D) damaged intestinal morphology, downregulated the expression of tight junction proteins, and upregulated the expression of the NLRP3 inflammasome and the concentration of pro-inflammatory cytokines. In addition, extended exposure to light significantly decreased the abundance of Lactobacillus, Butyricicoccus, and Sellimonas and increased the abundance of Bifidobacterium, unclassified Oscillospirales, Family_XIII_UCG-001, norank_f__norank_o__Clostridia_vadinBB60_group, and Defluviitaleaceae_UCG-01. Spearman correlation analysis indicated that gut microbiota dysbiosis positively correlated with the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome. The above results indicated that extended exposure to light induced intestinal injury by NLRP3 inflammasome activation and gut microbiota dysbiosis. Antibiotic depletion intestinal microbiota treatment and cecal microbiota transplantation (CMT) from the 12L:12D group to 18L:6D group indicated that the gut microbiota alleviated intestinal inflammatory injury induced by extended exposure to light via inhibiting the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome. In conclusion, our findings indicated that the gut microbiota can alleviate intestinal inflammation induced by extended exposure to light via inhibiting the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome.

ABSTRACT

The Mediterranean mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis, is a significant marine bivalve species that has ecological and economic importance. This species is robustly resilient and highly invasive. Despite the scientific and commercial interest in studying its biology and aquaculture, there remains a need for a high-quality, chromosome-scale reference genome. In this study, we have assembled a high-quality chromosome-scale reference genome for M. galloprovincialis. The total length of our reference genome is 1.41 Gb, with a scaffold N50 sequence length of 96.9 Mb. BUSCO analysis revealed a 97.5% completeness based on complete BUSCOs. Compared to the four other available M. galloprovincialis assemblies, the assembly described here is dramatically improved in both contiguity and completeness. This new reference genome will greatly contribute to a deeper understanding of the resilience and invasiveness of M. galloprovincialis.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that the addition of platinum to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) improved outcomes for patients with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). However, no studies have assessed the efficacy and safety of the combination of taxane and lobaplatin. In this study, we conducted a randomized controlled phase II clinical study to compare the efficacy and safety of taxane combined with lobaplatin or anthracycline. METHODS: We randomly allocated patients with stage I-III TNBC into Arm A and Arm B. Arm A received six cycles of taxane combined with lobaplatin (TL). Arm B received six cycles of taxane combined with anthracycline and cyclophosphamide (TEC) or eight cycles of anthracycline combined with cyclophosphamide and sequential use of taxane (EC-T). Both Arms underwent surgery after NAC. The primary endpoint was the pathologic complete response (pCR). Secondary endpoints were event-free survival (EFS), overall survival (OS), and safety. RESULTS: A total of 103 patients (51 in Arm A and 52 in Arm B) were assessed. The pCR rate of Arm A was significantly higher than that of Arm B (41.2% vs. 21.2%, P = 0.028). Patients with positive lymph nodes and low neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) benefited significantly more from Arm A than those with negative lymph nodes and high NLR (Pinteraction = 0.001, Pinteraction = 0.012, respectively). There was no significant difference in EFS (P = 0.895) or OS (P = 0.633) between the two arms. The prevalence of grade-3/4 anemia was higher in Arm A (P = 0.015), and the prevalence of grade-3/4 neutropenia was higher in Arm B (P = 0.044). CONCLUSIONS: Neoadjuvant taxane plus lobaplatin has shown better efficacy than taxane plus anthracycline, and both regimens have similar toxicity profiles. This trial may provide a reference for a better combination strategy of immunotherapy in NAC for TNBC in the future.

ABSTRACT

Precise three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting designs enable the fabrication of unique structures for 3D-cell culture models. There is still an absence of real-time detection tools to effectively track in situ 3D-cell performance, hindering a comprehensive understanding of disease progression and drug efficacy assessment. While numerous bioinks have been developed, few are equipped with internal sensors capable of accurate detection. This study addresses these challenges by constructing a 3D-bioprinted hepar-on-a-chip embedded with graphene quantum dot-capped gold nanoparticle-based plasmonic sensors, featuring strong surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) enhancement, biostability, and signal consistency. Such an integrated hepar-on-a-chip demonstrates excellent capability in the secretion of liver function-related proteins and the expression of drug metabolism and transport-related genes. Furthermore, the on-site detection of cell-secreted biomarker glutathione transferase α (GST-α) was successfully achieved using the plasmonic probe, with a dynamic linear detection range of 20-500 ng/mL, showcasing high anti-interference and specificity for GST-α. Ultimately, this integrated hepar-on-a-chip system offers a high-quality platform for monitoring liver injury.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Herpes zoster (HZ) is mainly characterized by intense pain and severe skin lesions, particularly during the acute phase, which seriously affects the patient's quality of life. Acupuncture is a widely used and effective treatment for HZ. However, there are many types of acupuncture, which have different curative efficacy. This study employed a network meta-analysis (NMA) to assess and rank the clinical efficacy of different acupuncture therapies. METHODS: The database of Cochrane Library, Web of Science, PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Chinese BioMedical Database, VIP Database, and Wanfang Database were searched from inception to December 31, 2022 to identify eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of acupuncture related therapies in the treatment of acute HZ. The outcome indicators measured were visual analogue scale (VAS), date of cessation of herpes increase (DCHI), effective rate (ER), postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), and adverse events (AEs). Bayesian network meta-analyses were performed using the GeMTC package (version 1.0-1) and R software (version 4.2.3). RESULTS: A total of 59 RCTs with 3930 patients were included. The results of this NMA were as follows: compared with pharmacotherapy, electroacupuncture (EA) + pricking and cupping (PC) shown the best efficacy to improve VAS score and reduce DCHI. In terms of ER, EA + fire needle (FN) had the highest results of probability ranking. PC was more effective in reducing the incidence of PHN. Furthermore, this study shown that the incidence of AEs associated with acupuncture-related therapies was acceptable. CONCLUSIONS: This study indicated that therapies related to acupuncture were both effective and safe in treating acute HZ, and could significantly reduce patients' symptoms such as pain and skin lesions with fewer adverse events. Clinically, the selection of the appropriate therapy should be based on practical considerations. However, due to the limitations of this study, more high-quality trials are required to evaluate the efficacy and safety of acupuncture-related therapy for the treatment of acute HZ.

ABSTRACT

We investigate the reaction pathways of nine important CO2-related reactions using the revDSD-PBEP86-D3(BJ)/jun-cc-pV(T+d)Z level and simultaneously employ an accurate composite method (jun-Cheap) based on coupled-cluster (CC) theory. Subsequently, the Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus/master equation (RRKM/ME) is solved to calculate the temperature- and pressure-dependent rate constants. This work investigates reactions involving transition states that have been overlooked in previous literature, including the dissociation of singlet-state C3O2, the triple channel formation of C2O + CO to form C3O2, and the formation of O3 + CO. The results show that CO3 is highly prone to dissociation at high temperatures. Finally, the kinetic data show that over a wide temperature range, our calculations are consistent with previous experimental measurements. The majority of the reaction rate constants studied exhibit significant pressure dependence, while the O3 + CO reaction is pressure-independent at low temperatures. These results are instrumental in the development of detailed kinetic models for the CO2 radiolysis reaction network.

OBJECTIVE: Providing care to others can exert a profound impact on caregivers' sense of purpose or meaning in life, thereby reciprocally influencing the caregivers' overall health and well-being. This study aims to investigate whether the sense of purpose in life moderates the association between loneliness and caregiving stress among family caregivers of people with mental health problems. METHODS: A sample of family caregivers of people with mental health problems (N = 468, 57.1 % female) drawn from the 2020 survey of the Caregiving in the U.S. was investigated. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and a multiple regression with an interaction term were performed. RESULTS: Higher levels of loneliness were associated with enhanced caregiving stress. Moreover, after demographic and care-related factors were controlled for, the association between loneliness and caregiving stress was moderated by purpose in life; namely, as the sense of purpose in life increased, so did the intensity of the relationship between loneliness and caregiving stress. CONCLUSION: Reducing loneliness or strengthening the sense of purpose helps alleviate caregiving stress, and lonely family caregivers with a strong sense of purpose deserve extra attention.

ABSTRACT

Although the association between social participation and memory function has been documented in other populations, whether it exists among stroke survivors is unclear. Additionally, the mechanisms underlying this association are largely unknown. We attempted to examine the association between social participation and memory function in stroke survivors and the possible mediating role of depressive symptoms. A total of 614 stroke survivors (mean age: 64.73 years) drawn from a nationally representative survey in China were investigated. Based on the descriptive statistics, a Pearson's correlation and bootstrapping-based mediation analysis were executed. The results indicated that an increase in social participation was associated with a decrease in depressive symptoms (r = -0.100, p < 0.05) and an increase in memory function (r = 0.162, p < 0.01). Moreover, memory function was significantly negatively related to depressive symptoms (r = -0.243, p < 0.01). In addition, after controlling for sociodemographic factors, depressive symptoms partially mediated the effects of social participation on memory function. Due to the cross-sectional research design, causal relationships cannot be verified between the study variables. However, interventions aimed at aiding stroke survivors in memory impairment recovery may consider strategies to enhance social participation and mitigate depressive symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Sleep problems are common among nurses and can lead to various health problems. Further, the relationship between multiple sleep problems and memory impairment in clinical nurses remains unknown. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to explore the relationship between sleep problems and memory impairment among nurses. METHODS: Multistage cluster-stratified random sampling was performed from tertiary hospitals in Shandong, China. Overall, a total of 1833 nurses were included in the final analysis. The Chinese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and prospective and retrospective memory questionnaire were administered to the participants. RESULTS: The sleep quality of the nurses decreased during the normal epidemic prevention and control period compared with that before the epidemic in terms of sleep duration, sleep efficiency, and sleep disturbances. Nurses who reported cumulative or specific sleep problems (e.g., high sleep latency, sleep disturbances, and daytime dysfunction) and those in the "daily disturbances" and "poor sleep quality" groups had a higher risk of memory impairment than the others. CONCLUSION: Sleep problems might be important for memory impairment among nurses. These findings may help identify nurses at considerable risk of memory impairment in clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of dietary peppermint extract (PE) on innate immunity and inflammatory responses in the spleen of broiler chickens under chronic heat stress. In order to further study the mechanism of the activation of innate immunity and inflammation induced by chronic heat stress and the regulatory effect of peppermint extract, we examined the spleen's histological change, the mRNA expression of major pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) (TLR2, TLR4, NOD1, MDA5 and DAI) and transcription factors (NF-κB, AP-1 and IRF3) and downstream inflammatory cytokines (IFN-α, IFN-ß, IL-1ß, IL-6 and TNF-α) of innate immune signaling pathways associated with heat stress in the spleen of broiler chickens. The results indicated that chronic heat stress damaged the spleen tissue. In addition, chronic heat stress induced the activation of innate immunity and inflammatory responses by increasing the mRNA expression of TLR2, TLR4 and DAI, mRNA expression of transcriptional factors (NF-κB, AP-1 and IRF3) and the concentration of downstream inflammatory cytokines in the spleen of broiler chickens. Dietary peppermint extract alleviated the damage of spleen tissue caused by chronic heat stress. In addition, peppermint extract reduced the mRNA expression of DAI, mRNA expression of transcriptional factors NF-κB, AP-1 and IRF3, and the concentration of inflammatory cytokines in the spleen of broiler chickens under chronic heat stress. In conclusion, dietary peppermint extract could have a beneficial effect on regulating inflammatory response and innate immunity via inhibiting the activation of NF-κB, AP-1 and IRF3 signaling pathways mediated by DAI in the spleen of broiler chickens induced by chronic heat stress.

BACKGROUND: Our previous work indicated that the addition of lobaplatin to combined therapy with taxane and anthracycline can improve the pathological complete response rate of neoadjuvant therapy for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) and lengthen long-term survival significantly, but the therapeutic markers of this regimen are unclear. METHODS: Eighty-three patients who met the inclusion criteria were included in this post hoc analysis. We analyzed the association between platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) before neoadjuvant chemotherapy with the efficacy and prognosis after treatment with docetaxel, epirubicin, and lobaplatin neoadjuvant chemotherapy regimen. χ2 test and Cox regression were used to analyze the association between PLR and NLR with total pathologic complete response (tpCR), as well as the association between PLR and NLR with event-free survival (EFS) and overall survival (OS), respectively. RESULTS: The tpCR rate in the PLR- group was 49.0% (25/51), which was significantly higher than that in the PLR+ group (25.0% [8/32], P = .032). The tpCR rate in the NLR- group was 49.1% (26/53), which was significantly higher than that in the NLR+ group (23.3% [7/30], P = .024). The tpCR rate of the PLR-NLR- (PLR- and NLR-) group was 53.7% (22/41), which was significantly higher than that of the PLR+/NLR+ (PLR+ or/and NLR+) group (26.1% [11/42]; P = .012). EFS and OS in the NLR+ group were significantly shorter than those in the NLR- group (P = .028 for EFS; P = .047 for OS). Patients in the PLR-NLR- group had a longer EFS than those in the PLR+/NLR+ group (P = .002). CONCLUSION: PLR and NLR could be used to predict the efficacy of neoadjuvant therapy with the taxane, anthracycline, and lobaplatin regimen for patients with TNBC, as patients who had lower PLR and NLR values had a higher tpCR rate and a better long-term prognosis.

ABSTRACT

The ability to gain spatiotemporal information, and in some cases achieve spatiotemporal control, in the context of drug delivery makes theranostic fluorescent probes an attractive and intensely investigated research topic. This interest is reflected in the steep rise in publications on the topic that have appeared over the past decade. Theranostic fluorescent probes, in their various incarnations, generally comprise a fluorophore linked to a masked drug, in which the drug is released as the result of certain stimuli, with both intrinsic and extrinsic stimuli being reported. This release is then signaled by the emergence of a fluorescent signal. Importantly, the use of appropriate fluorophores has enabled not only this emerging fluorescence as a spatiotemporal marker for drug delivery but also has provided modalities useful in photodynamic, photothermal, and sonodynamic therapeutic applications. In this review we highlight recent work on theranostic fluorescent probes with a particular focus on probes that are activated in tumor microenvironments. We also summarize efforts to develop probes for other applications, such as neurodegenerative diseases and antibacterials. This review celebrates the diversity of designs reported to date, from discrete small-molecule systems to nanomaterials. Our aim is to provide insights into the potential clinical impact of this still-emerging research direction.

ABSTRACT

The present study aimed to investigate the effect of photoperiod on the intestinal inflammation and gut microbiota. A total of 96 broiler chickens were divided into 2 groups and fed separately under 2 different photoperiods (12L:12D group and 23L:1D group) for 21 d. The results showed that the photoperiod of 23L:1D damaged duodenal tissue structure (intestinal villus erosion, mucosal epithelial cell detachment, and inflammatory cell infiltration), significantly increased the concentration of inflammatory cytokines (IL-1ß, IL-18, IL-6, and TNF-α) and significantly increased the mRNA expression levels and protein expression levels of NOD-, LRR-, pyrin domain-containing protein 3 (NLRP3) and caspase1 (P <0.05) compared with 12L:12D, which indicating that extended photoperiod induced intestinal injury and activated NLRP3 inflammasome. 16S rRNA sequencing analysis revealed that Bacteroides was significantly decreased, Ruminococcus_torques_group, norank_f_Desulfovibrionaceae, GCA-900066575, Defluviitaleaceae_UCG-011, Lachnospiraceae_FCS020_group, norank_f_UCG-010 and norank_f_norank_o_Clostridia_vadinBB60_group and were significantly increased in the 23L:1D group, compared with the 12L:12D group (P < 0.05). The correlation analysis between differential microbial communities and intestinal inflammation showed that the relative abundance of Bacteroides was negatively correlated with the mRNA expression level of NLRP3 (P < 0.05) and the relative abundance of Ruminococcus_torques_group was positively correlated with the mRNA expression level of NLRP3 (P < 0.05). linear discriminant analysis (LDA) effect size (LEfSe) results (LDA > 4) showed that the relative abundance of Bacteroides was dramatically higher (P < 0.05) in the 12L:12D group, whereas the relative abundance of Ruminococcus_torques_group was noticeably higher (P < 0.05) in the 23L:1D group. By the comprehensive analysis of the gut microbiota, the interaction of gut microbiota (Bacteroides and Ruminococcus_torques_group) and NLRP3 inflammasome may contribute to the intestinal injury under the condition of extended photoperiod.

Light pollution is a potential risk factor for intestinal health. Tryptophan plays an important role in the inhibition of intestinal inflammation. However, the mechanism of tryptophan in alleviating intestinal inflammation caused by long photoperiod is still unclear. This study investigated the anti-inflammatory effect of dietary tryptophan on intestinal inflammatory damage induced by long photoperiod and its potential mechanism in broiler chickens. We found that dietary tryptophan mitigated long photoperiod-induced intestinal tissue inflammatory damage and inhibited the activation of Nucleotide-Binding Oligomerization Domain, Leucine-Rich Repeat and Pyrin Domain-Containing 3 inflammasome. Moreover, dietary tryptophan significantly increased the relative abundance of Faecalibacterium, Enterococcus, and Lachnospiraceae_NC2004_group were significantly decreased the relative abundance of Ruminococcus_torques_group and norank_f_UCG-010 under the condition of long photoperiod (P < 0.05). The results of tryptophan targeted metabolomics show that tryptophan significantly increased indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and indole-3 lactic acid (ILA), and significantly decreased xanthurenic acid (XA) under long photoperiod (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the results indicated that dietary tryptophan alleviates intestinal inflammatory damage caused by long photoperiod via the inhibition of Nucleotide-Binding Oligomerization Domain, Leucine-Rich Repeat and Pyrin Domain-Containing 3 inflammasome activation, which was mediated by tryptophan metabolites. Therefore, tryptophan supplementation could be a promising way to protect the intestine health under the condition of long photoperiod.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B poses a heavy burden for children in China, however, the national studies on the distributional characteristics and health care costs of children with severe hepatitis B is still lacking. This study aimed to analyze the disease characteristics, health economic effects, and medical cost for children with severe hepatitis B in China. METHODS: Based on patient information in the Hospital Quality Monitoring System, cases with severe hepatitis B were divided into four groups according to age, and the etiology and symptoms of each group were quantified. The cost of hospitalization was calculated for cases with different disease processes, and severity of disease. The spatial aggregation of cases and the relationship with health economic factors were analyzed by Moran's I  analysis. RESULTS: The total number of children discharged with hepatitis B from January 2016 to April 2022 was 1603, with an average age of 10.5 years. Liver failure cases accounted for 43.48% (697/1603,) of total cases and cirrhosis cases accounted for 11.23% (180/1603,). According to the grouping of disease progression, there were 1292 cases without associated complications, and the median hospitalization cost was $818.12. According to the spatial analysis, the aggregation of cases was statistically significant at the prefectural and provincial levels in 2019, 2020, and 2021 (all P <0.05). The number of severe cases was negatively correlated with gross domestic product (GDP, Moran's I <0) and percentage of urban population (Moran's I <0), and positively correlated with the number of pediatric beds per million population (Moran's I >0). CONCLUSION: The number of severe hepatitis B cases is low in areas with high GDP levels and high urban population ratios, and health care costs have been declining over the years.

ABSTRACT

The suitable microenvironment of bone regeneration is critically important for periodontitis-derived bone defect repair. Three major challenges in achieving a robust osteogenic reaction are the exist of oral inflammation, pathogenic bacteria invasion and unaffluent seed cells. Herein, a customizable and multifunctional 3D-printing module was designed with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) modified epsilon-poly-L-lysine (EPLGMA) loading periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) and myeloid-derived suppressive cells membrane vesicles (MDSCs-MV) bioink (EPLGMA/PDLSCs/MDSCs-MVs, abbreviated as EPM) for periodontitis-derived bone defect repair. The EPM showed excellent mechanical properties and physicochemical characteristics, providing a suitable microenvironment for bone regeneration.In vitro, EPMs presented effectively kill the periodontopathic bacteria depend on the natural antibacterial properties of the EPL. Meanwhile, MDSCs-MV was confirmed to inhibit T cells through CD73/CD39/adenosine signal pathway, exerting an anti-inflammatory role. Additionally, seed cells of PDLSCs provide an adequate supply for osteoblasts. Moreover, MDSCs-MV could significantly enhance the mineralizing capacity of PDLSCs-derived osteoblast. In the periodontal bone defect rat model, the results of micro-CT and histological staining demonstrated that the EPM scaffold similarly had an excellent anti-inflammatory and bone regeneration efficacyin vivo. This biomimetic and multifunctional 3D-printing bioink opens new avenues for periodontitis-derived bone defect repair and future clinical application.

ABSTRACT

Diabetes is a common metabolic disease characterized by an imbalance in blood glucose levels. The pathogenesis of diabetes involves the essential role of cytokines, particularly the IL-12 family cytokines. These cytokines, which have a similar structure, play multiple roles in regulating the immune response. Recent studies have emphasized the importance of IL-12 family cytokines in the development of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus. As a result, they hold promise as potential therapeutic targets for the treatment of these conditions. This review focuses on the potential of targeting IL-12 family cytokines for diabetes therapy based on their roles in the pathogenesis of both types of diabetes. We have summarized various therapies that target IL-12 family cytokines, including drug therapy, combination therapy, cell therapy, gene therapy, cytokine engineering therapy, and gut microbiota modulation. By analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of these therapies, we have evaluated their feasibility for clinical application and proposed possible solutions to overcome any challenges. In conclusion, targeting IL-12 family cytokines for diabetes therapy provides updated insights into their potential benefits, such as controlling inflammation, preserving islet ß cells, reversing the onset of diabetes, and impeding the development of diabetic complications.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) against women presents a major public health challenge, especially in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), and its relationship with poor offspring growth is emerging but remains understudied. This study aimed to explore the impact of maternal exposure to IPV on offspring growth based on different approaches in LMICs. We conducted a population-based cross-sectional study using the most recent Demographic and Health Surveys from 32 LMICs; 81,652 mother-child dyads comprising women aged from 15 to 49 years with children aged 0 to 59 months were included. We applied logistic regression models to explore the independent and cumulative relationship between IPV, including emotional, physical, and sexual IPV, with poor child growth status, including stunting and wasting; 52.6% of mothers were under the age of 30 years with a 36% prevalence of any lifetime exposure to IPV. Maternal exposure to any IPV increased the odds of stunting, but only physical and sexual IPV were independently associated with an increased risk of stunting. Three different types of IPV exhibited a cumulative effect on stunting. Maternal exposure to physical IPV was significantly associated with an increased risk of wasting. Significant associations between maternal exposure to emotional IPV with offspring stunting and physical IPV with wasting were only observed in children aged 0 to 36 months. IPV against women remains high in LMICs and has adverse effects on offspring growth. Policy and program efforts are needed to prioritize the reduction of widespread physical and sexual IPV and to mitigate the impact of such violence.
