ABSTRACT

Owing to the outstanding properties provided by nontrivial band topology, topological phases of matter are considered as a promising platform towards low-dissipation electronics, efficient spin-charge conversion, and topological quantum computation. Achieving ferroelectricity in topological materials enables the non-volatile control of the quantum states, which could greatly facilitate topological electronic research. However, ferroelectricity is generally incompatible with systems featuring metallicity due to the screening effect of free carriers. In this study, we report the observation of memristive switching based on the ferroelectric surface state of a topological semimetal (TaSe4)2I. We find that the surface state of (TaSe4)2I presents out-of-plane ferroelectric polarization due to surface reconstruction. With the combination of ferroelectric surface and charge-density-wave-gapped bulk states, an electric-switchable barrier height can be achieved in (TaSe4)2I-metal contact. By employing a multi-terminal-grounding design, we manage to construct a prototype ferroelectric memristor based on (TaSe4)2I with on/off ratio up to 103, endurance over 103 cycles, and good retention characteristics. The origin of the ferroelectric surface state is further investigated by first-principles calculations, which reveals an interplay between ferroelectricity and band topology. The emergence of ferroelectricity in (TaSe4)2I not only demonstrates it as a rare but essential case of ferroelectric topological materials, but also opens new routes towards the implementation of topological materials in functional electronic devices.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is one of the most common osteoarthritis, imposing substantial economic and medical burdens on both individuals and society. In China, Tuina has been selected as a complementary and alternative therapy to relieve knee pain and dysfunction symptoms. However, the current evidence is insufficient to support the efficacy of Tuina therapy in addressing knee pain and improving physical function. The trial aims to compare the effectiveness of Tuina with celecoxib, which is considered as the standard treatment, and to assess its potential as an alternative therapy through changes in outcome measures. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A total of 360 KOA patients aged between 40 and 70 years and classified as Kellgren and Lawrence grades I-II will be recruited from eight subcentral hospitals. The participants will be randomly assigned to either the treatment group (Tuina, Biw) or the control group (celecoxib, Qd), with both groups undergoing a 4-week intervention phase followed by an 8-week follow-up phase. The primary outcome is the change in Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) pain subscale at week 4 compared with baseline. Secondary outcomes including WOMAC stiffness and function subscales, WOMAC total score, 36-item Short-Form Health Survey, Timed Up and Go test, Short Physical Performance Battery, gait analysis parameters and pain medication records will be assessed at weeks 4, 8 and 12. Any adverse events that occur during the trial will be promptly recorded. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: This study has been approved by the Ethics Committee of Shanghai Municipal Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine (2023SHL-KY-16-01, 2023SHL-KY-16-02). Written informed consent will be obtained from all participants. Study results will be disseminated through peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations. ABSTRACT

Flame retardants are effective in protecting materials from fire but pose environmental challenges due to limited recyclability. Urgently needed for circular material economy are new flame retardants that are chemically recyclable and durable. Here, we report a new facile and scalable strategy for engineering reversible microcages with infinite chemical recyclability to starting monomers, exceptional durability, and versatile flame retardancy. This is achieved through a highly synergistic hierarchical assembly of easily obtainable phosphoric acid and Cu2+ monomers. By leveraging dynamic reversible assembly networks, microcages can be circularly and infinitely dissociated into starting monomers via eco-friendly pH adjustment. Remarkable recovery rates of 92% for phosphoric acid and 96.2% for Cu2+ monomers are achieved, while the separated virgin matrix undergoes conventional chemical recycling, facilitating reformulation and seamless reintroduction into new supply chains as needed. Notably, when integrated with matrix-like surfaces, microcage clasp matrices tightly engage through in situ formed interfacial locking structures, showcasing outstanding flame-retardant efficiency, prolonged durability in hydrothermal aging, and extensive applicability across diverse polymeric materials such as polyurethane, epoxy resin, and polycarbonate. This study emphasizes a novel, straightforward, and scalable chemical platform, utilizing reversible interfacial locking engineering, for the development of flame retardants that are not only infinitely recyclable but also durable and broadly applicable.

ABSTRACT

INDRODUCTION: Primary dysmenorrhea (PD) is a very common issue in young women that reduces the quality of women's lives. Both Western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) provide several ways to treat PD; however, TCM treatment exhibits fewer side effects for the patient. Tuina massage and Chinese herbal compresses are considered forms of external TCM therapy that have been widely used to treat PD, especially in China. Therefore, to provide the most effective and safe treatment for PD, we combined Tuina and Chinese herbal compresses together in this observational study. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial (RCT) consisting of 114 participants from the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine who meet inclusion criteria will be divided into two groups in a 1:1 allocation ratio. The intervention group will receive Tuina combined with Chinese herbal compress therapy, while the control group will only receive Chinese herbal compress therapy. The treatment will be given 3 days before menstruation (once per day, 3 times per menstrual cycle). The primary outcome will be measured with the Visual Analog Scale (VAS). The secondary outcomes will be measured by the Dysmenorrhea Symptom Score, the Chinese Medical Dysmenorrhea Symptom Score, the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), the Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), and the pain threshold at Guanyuan (CV4). CONCLUSION: This study will be the first RCT that will entail the combination of Tuina and Chinese herbal compresses to treat PD in the category of cold coagulation and blood stasis syndrome. If the results demonstrate that Tuina combined with a Chinese herbal compress is effective, we posit that this study will provide evidence-based references for a potential alternative treatment to treat PD in the future.EinleitungDie primäre Dysmenorrhoe (PD) ist ein Problem, das bei jungen Frauen sehr häufig auftritt und ihre Lebensqualität beeinträchtigt. Sowohl die westliche Medizin als auch die traditionelle chinesische Medizin (TCM) bieten verschiedene Therapiemöglichkeiten zur Behandlung der PD, allerdings ist die TCM mit weniger Nebenwirkungen für die Patientin verbunden. Tuina-Massage und chinesische Kräuterkompressen gelten als Formen der äußerlichen TCM-Therapie, die besonders in China zur Behandlung der PD weit verbreitet sind. Daher haben wir in dieser Beobachtungsstudie Tuina und chinesische Kräuterkompressen kombiniert, um eine möglichst wirksame und sichere Behandlung der PD bereitzustellen.MethodenEs handelt sich um eine randomisierte kontrollierte Studie (randomized controlled trial, RCT), bei der 114 Teilnehmerinnen der Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, die die Einschlusskriterien erfüllen, im Verhältnis 1:1 in zwei Gruppen aufgeteilt werden. Die Interventionsgruppe erhält Tuina in Kombination mit chinesischen Kräuterkompressen, während die Kontrollgruppe nur eine Behandlung mit chinesischen Kräuterkompressen erhält. Die Behandlung erfolgt drei Tage vor der Menstruation (einmal täglich, dreimal pro Menstruationszyklus). Das primäre Zielkriterium wird anhand der visuellen Analogskala (VAS) gemessen. Die sekundären Zielkriterien werden mithilfe des Dysmenorrhoe-Symptom-Scores, des chinesischen medizinischen Dysmenorrhoe-Symptom-Scores, der Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), der Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) und der Schmerzschwelle am Guanyuan-Akupunkturpunkt (CV4) ermittelt.SchlussfolgerungDiese Studie ist die erste randomisierte kontrollierte Studie, die die Kombination von Tuina und chinesischen Kräuterkompressen zur Behandlung von PD in der Kategorie Kältekoagulation und Blutstauungssyndrom untersucht. Sollten die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass Tuina in Kombination mit chinesischen Kräuterkompressen wirksam ist, erwarten wir, dass diese Studie evidenzbasierte Belege für eine mögliche alternative Behandlung von PD in der Zukunft liefern wird.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Chronic insomnia (CI) is a mind-body disease that is commonly defined as a state of having disturbed daytime activities due to poor nighttime sleep quality. Baduanjin qigong (BDJQG) is widely used for CI in China. However, there is little scientific evidence to evaluate its effects on the hyperarousal state, which is closely associated with improved sleep quality. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the trial is to assess the therapeutic effects of BDJQG on sleep quality in patients with CI. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial will be conducted on 86 patients, who will be divided into a BDJQG group and a cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia group at a ratio of 1:1. Interventions in both groups will be given to the participants 7 times a week for 8 weeks, and the participants will be followed up for 4 weeks. The primary outcome is the change in the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index from baseline to week 8. The secondary outcomes are the changes in the Hyperarousal Scale, Insomnia Severity Index, Fatigue Scale-14, wrist actigraphy, salivary cortisol level, and functional magnetic resonance imaging from baseline to week 8. All main analyses will be carried out on the basis of the intention-to-treat principle. RESULTS: This study was funded from January 2023. As of the submission of the manuscript, there were 86 participants. Data collection began in April 2023 and will end in January 2024. Data analysis is expected to begin in January 2024, with the publication of results expected in February 2024. CONCLUSIONS: This study will present data concerning the clinical effects of BDJQG on CI. The results will help to demonstrate whether BDJQG is an effective therapy for improving sleep quality in association with a decreased hyperarousal level as a possible underlying mechanism. This study will provide much-needed knowledge for complementary and alternative therapy for patients with CI. ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a common public health problem and a leading cause of long-term pain, decreased muscle strength, and even disability. Tai Chi has been proved effective and highly recommended for KOA management worldwide. However, little is known about its benefits on quadriceps strength which is closely associated with relieving knee pain. This trial is designed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Tai Chi on knee pain and muscle strength in middle-aged and older adults with KOA. METHODS: A total of 100 participants will be randomly divided into a Tai Chi group (TC group) (1x/week for 12 weeks) and a control group with a health education and stretching program (1x/week for 12 weeks) with a follow-up period of 6 weeks. The primary outcome is the change of Western Ontario and McMaster Universities (WOMAC) pain subscale at week 12 compared with baseline. Secondary outcomes include WOMAC stiffness and function subscales, data from isokinetic dynamometry, gait analysis with electromyography (EMG), and a 36-item short form health survey (SF-36). The daily dose of pain-relieving medication will also be recorded. All adverse effects will be assessed by the Treatment Emergent Symptom Scale (TESS). DISCUSSION: We expect this randomized trial to evaluate the effectiveness of Tai Chi on relieving pain and increasing quadriceps strength in KOA patients. This protocol, if proven effective, will contribute to providing a promising alternative intervention for middle-aged and older adults with KOA. ABSTRACT

Port congestion caused by ship detention is an important reason for the obstruction of the shipping supply chain. In this paper, a method of excavating the ship waiting behavior outside the port is proposed based on the automatic identification system (AIS) data and considering uncontrollable factors. Firstly, combined with the analysis of ship navigation behavior, the speed threshold of the ship waiting outside the port is defined through average speed. Secondly, the range of ships berthing in the port is distinguished, and the different waiting behavior of ships are clarified. Finally, the situation of different types and sizes of ships waiting outside the port is analyzed. The paper found that ships of different types and sizes have distinctive clustered waiting behavior, and there are significant differences in waiting time. At the ship type, bulk cargo ship have the highest number among ships waiting outside the port, followed by tanker and container ship; at the ship scale, basically, the number of ships waiting outside the port decreases with the increase of the scale, but the average waiting time is longer. It has an excellent practical promotion value for the application of AIS data and development of shipping.

ABSTRACT

Photodetector based on two-dimensional (2D) materials is an ongoing quest in optoelectronics. 2D photodetectors are generally efficient at low illuminating power but suffer severe recombination processes at high power, which results in the sublinear power-dependent photoresponse and lower optoelectronic efficiency. The desirable superlinear photocurrent is mostly achieved by sophisticated 2D heterostructures or device arrays, while 2D materials rarely show intrinsic superlinear photoresponse. This work reports the giant superlinear power dependence of photocurrent based on multilayer Ta2 NiS5 . While the fabricated photodetector exhibits good sensitivity (3.1 mS W-1 per □) and fast photoresponse (31 µs), the bias-, polarization-, and spatial-resolved measurements point to an intrinsic photoconductive mechanism. By increasing the incident power density from 1.5 to 200 µW µm-2 , the photocurrent power dependence varies from sublinear to superlinear. At higher illuminating conditions, prominent superlinearity is observed with a giant power exponent of γ = 1.5. The unusual photoresponse can be explained by a two-recombination-center model where density of states of the recombination centers (RC) effectively closes all recombination channels. The photodetector is integrated into camera for taking photos with enhanced contrast due to superlinearity. This work provides an effective route to enable higher optoelectronic efficiency at extreme conditions.

ABSTRACT

Gastric cancer (GC) has been a common tumor type with high mortality. Distal metastasis is one of the main causes of death in GC patients, which is also related to poor prognosis. The mRNA profiles and clinical information of GC patients were downloaded from The Cancer Genome Atlas and Gene Expression Omnibus databases. Univariate Cox and LASSO Cox analyses were used to screen the optimal metastasis-related genes (MRGs) to establish a prognostic Risk Score model for GC patients. The nomogram was used to visualize the Risk Score and predict the 1-, 3-, 5-year survival rate. The immune cell infiltration was analyzed by CIBERSORT and the ratio of immune-stromal component was calculated by the ESTIMATE algorithm. A total of 142 differentially expressed genes were identified between metastatic and non-metastatic GC samples. The optimal 8 genes, comprising GAMT (guanidinoacetate N-methyltransferase), ABCB5 (ATP-binding cassette subfamily B member 5), ITIH3 (inter-alpha-trypsin inhibitor heavy chain 3), GDF3 (growth differentiation factor 3), VSTM2L (V-set and transmembrane domain-containing 2 like), CIDEA (cell death inducing DFFA like effector a), NPTX1 (neuronal pentraxin-1), and UMOD (uromodulin), were further screened to establish a prognostic Risk Score, which proved to be an independent prognostic factor. Patients in high-risk group had a poor prognosis. There were significant differences in the proportion of 11 tumor-infiltrating immune cells between high-risk and low-risk subgroups. In addition, the StromalScore, ImmuneScore, and ESTIMATEScore in high-risk group were higher than those in low-risk group, indicating that the tumor microenvironment of the high-risk group was more complex. A Risk Score model based on eight metastasis-related genes could clearly distinguish the prognosis of GC patients. The poor prognosis of patients with high-Risk Score might be associated with the complex tumor microenvironments.

ABSTRACT

Malus kansuensis, which belongs to the family Rosaceae, is an important apple rootstock resource in China. In the present study, the mitochondrial genome of M. kansuensis was sequenced and assembled by high-throughput sequencing (HTS). The genome was 385,436 bp in length, with an obvious (A + T) % bias over (G + C) %. The mitochondrial genome comprised 35 protein-coding genes, 21 tRNA genes, and 3 rRNA genes. The phylogenetic tree results showed that M. kansuensis is very close to M. domestica and M. hupehensis.

ABSTRACT

We demonstrate a simple and ultra-sensitive refractive index (RI) sensor using a hollow-core silica tube (HCST) sandwiched between an up-taper and a down-taper in single mode fibers (SMF). According to our theoretical analysis, the interference spectrum comes from a combination of a three-beam multi-mode interference and anti-resonance effects. RI sensing will affect the mode interference. By demodulating the fringe contrast of the interference spectra, an ultrahigh sensitivity of -120.18 dB/RIU is achieved, implying a RI resolution of ∼ 8×10-6 in the RI range from 1.35 to 1.43. What's more, the sensor has great temperature insensitivity of -0.0085 dB/°C, indicating an extremely low cross sensitivity of 7×10-5 RIU/°C, which further benefits its practical application. The proposed configuration does not require special fiber or fabrication technique. In addition, the sensor's other merits such as simple and compact structure and ease offabrication offer the potential in biochemical sensing applications.

OBJECTIVE: To study the optimum preparation process of the volatile oil of Dalbergia odorifera-beta-cyclodextrin. METHODS: The saturated water solution mixing method was compared with microwave method and ultrasonic method by determining the ultilization ratio of the volatile oil in Dalbergia odorifera. The optimum preparation conditions were investigated by the orthogonal design. The quality of the volatile oil before and after included were analyzed by TLC. RESULTS: The optimum preparation conditions for inclusion were as follows: m(volatile oil of Dalbergia odorifera): m (beta-CD) = 1:10 (g/g), ultrasonic time was 1h, the temperature was 70 degrees C. The ultilization ratio of the volatile oil was 82.02%. CONCLUSION: Ultrasonic method is the best method.
