ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Paraquat (PQ) can induce pulmonary fibrosis (PF) by modulating epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of alveolar epithelial cells, but the molecular mechanism is unknown. In this paper, the role of Wnt-inducible signaling protein-1 (WISP1) in PQ-induced EMT was inspected. METHODS: The morphology, apoptosis, and mortality of A549 cells were observed through a microscope. The mRNA and protein levels of WISP1, E-cadherin, and Vimentin were confirmed by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and western blot. RESULTS: With the increase of PQ concentration, the morphology of A549 cells was apparently changed, cell apoptosis and mortality were enhanced. Besides, the E-cadherin abundance was reduced (p < 0.01), however, WISP1 and Vimentin contents were boosted after PQ treatment (p < 0.01). With the increase of PQ treatment time, the epithelial index of cells first increased and then decreased. The expression of WISP1 gene increased significantly with the increase of PQ treatment time (p < 0.01). Silence of WISP1 abolished the effect of PQ treatment on E-cadherin and Vimentin levels (p < 0.01). Downregulation of WISP1 curbed morphology change and PQ-induced EMT in A549 cells. CONCLUSION: Knockdown of WISP1 inhibited PQ-induced EMT in A549 cells. This conclusion might provide a new therapeutic target for PQ poisoning treatment.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to investigate the diagnostic performance of a novel semi-quantitative dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) scoring system in monitoring urate deposition. This study included 287 patients with gout. All patients underwent ankle/foot DECT scans. DECT scores at different stages were compared and their diagnostic efficacies evaluated. Associations between DECT scores and clinical variables were evaluated. Gouts with positive DECT results in early, middle, and late stages were 78.5 %, 81.4 %, and 95.8 %, respectively (all P > .05). The total and ankle/midfoot DECT scores at different stages significantly increased with disease duration (all P < .05). DECT scores of 4 regions excluding the first metatarsophalangeal joint in early and middle stages were lower than those in late stage (all P < .05). DECT scores achieved excellent diagnostic performance for differentiating gout in early stage from middle and late stages (area under the curve, 0.923 and 0.949), with high sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value (all > 85 %). Total DECT score was highly positively correlated with the volume of urate crystals (R = 0.873, P < .001). Disease duration, serum uric acid level, bone erosion, and Achilles tendon involvement significantly affected total DECT scores (all P < .01). In conclusion, longer disease duration, higher serum uric acid levels, bone erosion, and Achilles tendon involvement were closely associated with total DECT scores. DECT scoring system may be an invaluable tool for gout diagnosis owing to its high detection efficacy and a surrogate method to evaluate the amount of urate crystals and erosion of surrounding tissues.

ABSTRACT

Metastasis is the hallmark of failed tumor treatment and is typically associated with death due to cancer. Transient receptor potential (TRP) channels affect changes in intracellular calcium concentrations and participate at every stage of metastasis. Further, they increase the migratory ability of tumor cells, promote angiogenesis, regulate immune function, and promote the growth of tumor cells through changes in gene expression and function. In this review, we explore the potential mechanisms of action of TRP channels, summarize their role in tumor metastasis, compile inhibitors of TRP channels relevant in tumors, and discuss current challenges in research on TRP channels involved in tumor metastasis.

ABSTRACT

We report a case of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the bladder (IMTB) that arises from left posterior bladder wall. The IMTB usually demonstrates slight hypointensity on T1WI, heterogeneous bright hyperintensity on T2WI, hyperintensity on DWI, and no restricted diffusion on ADC map. IMTB exhibits irregular ring enhancement and scatters stripe-like enhancement in central area with progressive and persistent enhancement pattern on CE-MRI. High-contrast multisequence MRI may be a potential technique to distinguish IMTB from other bladder tumors.

ABSTRACT

Duplex kidney is a common congenital malformation appeared as duplication of pelvis and ureter. However, renal duplication within sinus renalis is an extremely rare variation of the renal collecting system. In this study, we report a case of an asymptomatic kidney disease in a 33-year-old man, who demonstrates abnormal echo of renal sinus anomaly discovered incidentally in ultrasound examination. Computed tomography urography (CTU) exhibited the other small duplex kidney located in renal sinus. In the excretory phase images, the contrast medium within its small renal pelvis could be seen to flow into the right major renal calices. This case exhibited a very rare anatomical variation of duplicated renal malformation.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To evaluate the predictive value of dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) quantitative parameters in treatment response to concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) for locally advanced cervical squamous cell carcinoma (LACSC). METHODS AND MATERIALS: LACSC patients underwent CCRT had DCE-MRI before (e0) and after 3 days of treatment (e3). Extended Tofts Linear model with a user arterial input function was adopted to generate quantitative measurements. Endothelial transfer constant (Ktrans), reflux rate (Kep), fractional extravascular extracellular space volume (Ve), and fractional plasma volume (Vp) were calculated, and percentage changes ΔKtrans, ΔKep, ΔVe, and ΔVp were computed. The correlations of these measurements with the tumor regression rate were analyzed. The predictive value of these parameters on treatment outcome was generated by the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to find the independent variables. RESULTS: Ktrans-e0, Kep -e0, ΔKtrans, and ΔVe were positively correlated with the tumor regression rate. Mean values of Ktrans-e0, Ktrans-e3, ΔKtrans, and ΔVe were higher in the non-residual tumor group than residual tumor group and were independent prognostic factors for predicting residual tumor occurrence. Ktrans-e3 showed the highest area under the curve (AUC) for treatment response prediction. CONCLUSIONS: Quantitative parameters at e0 and e3 from DCE-MRI could be used as potential indicators for predicting treatment response of LACSC.

BACKGROUND: To testify whether multi-b-values diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) can be used to ultra-early predict treatment response of concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) in cervical cancer patients and to assess the predictive ability of concerning parameters. METHODS: Fifty-three patients with biopsy proved cervical cancer were retrospectively recruited in this study. All patients underwent pelvic multi-b-values DWI before and at the 3rd day during treatment. The apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), true diffusion coefficient (Dslow), perfusion-related pseudo-diffusion coefficient (Dfast), perfusion fraction (f), distributed diffusion coefficient (DDC) and intravoxel diffusion heterogeneity index(α) were generated by mono-exponential, bi-exponential and stretched exponential models. Treatment response was assessed based on Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST v1.1) at 1 month after the completion of whole CCRT. Parameters were compared using independent t test or Mann-Whitney U test as appropriate. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves was used for statistical evaluations. RESULTS: ADC-T0 (p = 0.02), Dslow-T0 (p <  0.01), DDC-T0 (p = 0.03), ADC-T1 (p <  0.01), Dslow-T1 (p <  0.01), ΔADC (p = 0.04) and Δα (p <  0.01) were significant lower in non-CR group patients. ROC analyses showed that ADC-T1 and Δα exhibited high prediction value, with area under the curves of 0.880 and 0.869, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Multi-b-values DWI can be used as a noninvasive technique to assess and predict treatment response in cervical cancer patients at the 3rd day of CCRT. ADC-T1 and Δα can be used to differentiate good responders from poor responders.

ABSTRACT

Aquaporins (AQP) are not only water channel protein, but also potential prognostic indicator and therapeutic target for rectal cancer. Some previous studies have demonstrated the AQP expression could be estimated by ADCaqp value derived from ultra-high b-value diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI). We aim to determine whether ADCaqp could be a new and specific biomarker for indicating the AQP expression and prognostic factors of rectal cancer. 76 untreated patients with rectal cancer confirmed by colonoscopy biopsy were enrolled. ADCaqp value was generated from ultra-high b-value DWI with five b-values (1700-3500 s/mm2). AQP (AQP1, 3 and 5)staining intensity was estimated by both of software (QuPath) and manual manner. The relationships between histogram features of ADCaqp and AQP staining intensity were analyzed. The correlations between histogram features of ADCaqp and differentiation degrees (good, moderate, poor), T stage (T1-2 vs T3-4), and lymph node status (N+ vs N-) were also evaluated respectively. The mean, 75th percentile and 97.5th percentile of ADCaqp were correlated with AQP1 staining intensity (r = 0.237, 0.323 and 0.362, respectively, all P < 0.05) . No correlation was found between the histogram features of ADCaqp and AQP3 or AQP5 staining intensity. The mean, 50th percentile, 75th percentile and 97.5th percentile of ADCaqp value exhibited significant differences between differentiation status (all P < 0.05). Histogram features of ADCaqp value showed no significant differences in two subgroups of T stage and lymph node status (all P > 0.05). Histogram analysis showed that the ADCaqp value derived from ultra-high b-value DWI of rectal cancer could reflect AQP1's expression and rectal cancer's malignancy degree. ADCaqp might be a new imaging biomarker for evaluating rectal cancer.

OBJECTIVES: Acute ischaemic stroke (AIS) is a highly dreaded complication of acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD). Knowledge about independent predictors of preoperative AIS in patients with ATAAD remains unclear. The aim of this study was to identify the risk factors for preoperative AIS in patients with ATAAD by computed tomography angiography (CTA) findings. METHODS: Between October 2014 and March 2017, 281 (217 male; mean age, 50 years) patients with ATAAD underwent aortic CTA and diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging of the brain was used to confirm the results. The clinical data and CTA findings were evaluated retrospectively. Patients were divided into 2 groups depending on the presence or absence of preoperative AIS. RESULTS: Preoperative AIS was detected in 103 (36.7%) of the patients with ATAAD. Univariable analysis of the clinical characteristics and CTA findings revealed that age, aortic valve insufficiency (moderate or severe), the ratio of the diameter of the true lumen of the ascending aorta to the diameter of the involved ascending aorta, intimal flap plaque, dissection of the common carotid artery (CCA), the lower density of the unilateral internal carotid artery, the CCA originating from the false lumen and dissection of the subclavian artery were implicated in patients with ATAAD with AIS. Multivariable analysis further showed that aortic valve insufficiency (moderate or severe) [odds ratio (OR) 2.033, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.052-3.931; P = 0.035], 2 CTA findings including the ratio of the diameters (OR 0.074, 95% CI 0.011-0.516; P = 0.009) and dissection of the CCA (OR 2.422, 95% CI 1.389-4.224; P = 0.002) were independent risk predictors for preoperative AIS in patients with ATAAD. The lower density in the false lumen, the same enhancement in the true and false lumen with re-entry and the stenosis of the true lumen without re-entry significantly increased the risk of preoperative AIS in CCA dissection. CONCLUSIONS: Aortic valve insufficiency (moderate or severe), the ratio of the diameters of the true and false lumens and CCA dissection are independent predictors of preoperative AIS in patients with ATAAD. The specific carotid and aortic CTA findings may help to predict the risk factors for preoperative AIS in patients with ATAAD. CLINICAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: 20120216-4.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study was to investigate the potential significance of intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM)-diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) in differentiating high-grade pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (pNENs) from pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). A total of 50 patients, including 37 patients with PDAC and 13 patients with high-grade pNENs, underwent pancreatic multiple b-values DWI with 15 b-values including 0, 10, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 150, 200, 400, 800, 1,000, 1,200, 1,500 and 2,000 sec/mm2. Standard apparent diffusion coefficient (ADCstandard) and IVIM parameter [slow apparent diffusion coefficient (Dslow), fast apparent diffusion coefficient (Dfast), fraction of fast apparent diffusion coefficient (ƒ)] values of PDAC and pNENs were compared. P<0.05 was considered to indicate a statistically significant difference. Receiver operating characteristics analysis was performed in order to evaluate the diagnostic potential of IVIM parameters for differentiating high-grade pNENs from PDAC. Dslow of pNENs was significantly lower compared with that of PDAC (0.460 vs. 0.579×10-3 mm2/sec; P=0.001). Dfast of pNENs was significantly higher compared with that of PDAC (13.361 vs. 4.985×10-3 mm2/sec; P<0.001). Area under the curve of Dslow, Dfast and combined Dslow and Dfast was 0.793, 0.863 and 0.885 respectively. The specificity and sensitivity of Dslow≤0.472×10-3 mm2/sec were 97.3 and 53.9%, respectively, for differentiating high-grade pNENs from PDAC. The specificity and sensitivity of Dfast >9.58×10-3 mm2/sec were 91.9 and 69.2%, respectively, for differentiating high-grade pNENs from PDAC. When Dslow and Dfast were combined, the specificity and sensitivity for differentiating high-grade pNENs from PDAC were 76.9 and 100%, respectively. Taken together, these results indicated that the diffusion-associated parameter Dslow and the perfusion-associated parameter Dfast of IVIM-DWI may differentiate high-grade pNENs from PDAC with high diagnostic accuracy, and that IVIM-DWI may be a valuable biomarker in differentiating pancreatic neoplasms.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study is aimed to compare magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) parameters and clinical pathological factors (CPF) of residual tumor group with non-residual tumor group in cervical cancer (CC) patients during concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT), and thus to establish a biomarker for individualized treatment strategy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From May 2014 to November 2015, 164 CC patients were included in this retrospective study. T2-weighted MRI was performed at pre-treatment (week-0), the completion of external radiotherapy (RT) (week-4), and one month after the completion of CCRT, using 3.0T MR scanner with regular pelvic coil. Mean signal intensity and tumor size on T2WI images were measured and calculated for each tumor, and lumbar 4-5 intervertebral disc at week-0 and week-4. All patients subsequently underwent routine follow-up, including periodic clinical and imaging examinations when necessary. Receiver operator characteristics (ROC) analysis were conducted to determine cut-off values. RESULTS: The residual tumor group showed a higher Δ tumor-to-disc signal intensity ratio (ΔTDR) than non-residual tumor group (0.78 ± 0.30 vs. 0.48 ± 0.19, t = 3.42, p < 0.05). The biomarker of combined MRI parameter and CPF showed the highest diagnostic performance than single MRI parameter or CPF alone. CONCLUSIONS: MRI parameter ΔTDR may be an independent prognostic factor for predicting residual tumor occurrence in CC after CCRT treatment. The combination of MRI parameter and CPF can serve as a valuable biomarker to distinguish CC with higher possibility of residual tumor occurrence.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to compare intravoxel incoherent motion diffusion weighted imaging (IVIM-DWI) parameters such as standard apparent diffusion coefficient (ADCstandard), pure diffusion coefficient (Dslow), pseudodiffusion coefficient (Dfast) and perfusion fraction (ƒ) for differentiating pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) with different pathological grades. METHODS: Institutional Review Board of our hospital approved this study protocol. Subjects comprised 38 PDACs confirmed by pathology. Pancreatic multiple b values DWI with 15 b values of 0, 10, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 150, 200, 400, 800, 1,000, 1200, 1,500, and 2,000 s/mm2 was performed using GE Discovery MR750 3.0T scanner. ADCstandard, Dslow, Dfast and ƒ values of all PDACs were calculated using mono- and bi-exponential models. Parameters of well/moderately differentiated and poorly differentiated PDAC were compared using Independent Sample t-test. P values <0.05 were considered significant. RESULTS: Mean Dslow value of well/moderately differentiated PDAC was significantly lower than that of poorly differentiated PDAC (0.540×10-3vs. 0.676×10-3 mm2/s, P<0.001). Mean ƒ value of well/moderately differentiated PDAC was significantly higher than that of poorly differentiated PDAC (60.3% vs. 38.4%, P<0.001). The area under curve value of ƒ in differentiating well/moderately differentiated PDAC from poorly differentiated PDAC was slightly higher than that of Dslow (0.894>0.865). When the Dslow value was less than or equal to 0.599×10-3 mm2/s, the sensitivity and specificity were 100% and 84.6% respectively. When ƒ value was greater than 49.6%, the sensitivity and specificity were 92.0% and 84.6% respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Dslow and ƒ derived from IVIM-DWI model can be used to distinguish well/moderately differentiated PDAC from poorly differentiated PDAC. And to serve this purpose, Dslow and ƒ have high diagnostic performance. IVIM-DWI is a promising and non-invasive tool for predicting pathological grade of PDAC.

Water molecular diffusion in vivo tissue is much more complicated. We aimed to compare non-Gaussian diffusion models of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) including intra-voxel incoherent motion (IVIM), stretched-exponential model (SEM) and Gaussian diffusion model at 3.0 T MRI in patients with rectal cancer, and to determine the optimal model for investigating the water diffusion properties and characterization of rectal carcinoma. Fifty-nine consecutive patients with pathologically confirmed rectal adenocarcinoma underwent DWI with 16 b-values at a 3.0 T MRI system. DWI signals were fitted to the mono-exponential and non-Gaussian diffusion models (IVIM-mono, IVIM-bi and SEM) on primary tumor and adjacent normal rectal tissue. Parameters of standard apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), slow- and fast-ADC, fraction of fast ADC (f), α value and distributed diffusion coefficient (DDC) were generated and compared between the tumor and normal tissues. The SEM exhibited the best fitting results of actual DWI signal in rectal cancer and the normal rectal wall (R2 = 0.998, 0.999 respectively). The DDC achieved relatively high area under the curve (AUC = 0.980) in differentiating tumor from normal rectal wall. Non-Gaussian diffusion models could assess tissue properties more accurately than the ADC derived Gaussian diffusion model. SEM may be used as a potential optimal model for characterization of rectal cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To clarify diffusion and perfusion abnormalities and evaluate correlation between apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), MR perfusion and histopathologic parameters of pancreatic cancer (PC). METHODS: Eighteen patients with PC underwent diffusion-weighted imaging and dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI). Parameters of DCE-MRI and ADC of cancer and non-cancerous tissue were compared. Correlation between the rate constant that represents transfer of contrast agent from the arterial blood into the extravascular extracellular space (K, volume of the extravascular extracellular space per unit volume of tissue (Ve), and ADC of PC and histopathologic parameters were analyzed. RESULTS: The rate constant that represents transfer of contrast agent from the extravascular extracellular space into blood plasma, K, tissue volume fraction occupied by vascular space, and ADC of PC were significantly lower than nontumoral pancreases. Ve of PC was significantly higher than that of nontumoral pancreas. Apparent diffusion coefficient and K values of PC were negatively correlated to fibrosis content and fibroblast activation protein staining score. Fibrosis content was positively correlated to Ve. CONCLUSION: Apparent diffusion coefficient values and parameters of DCE-MRI can differentiate PC from nontumoral pancreases. There are correlations between ADC, K, Ve, and fibrosis content of PC. Fibroblast activation protein staining score of PC is negatively correlated to ADC and K. Apparent diffusion coefficient, K, and Ve may be feasible to predict prognosis of PC.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of the hypothesis testing is to determine that apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) as an early biomarker can predict the metastatic lymph nodes' (LNs) response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy in advanced gastric cancer (GC) in early stage. From March 2011 to June 2015, 106 patients with advanced GC were enrolled in the study. Patients underwent conventional magnetic resonance imaging and functional diffusion weighted imaging before and 3 days, 7 days, 30 days, and 60 days following the standard chemotherapy. After surgery, among 3034 detected LNs, the positive group was divided into complete response (CR) group, partial response (PR) group, and stable disease (SD) group in accordance to the Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST) 1.1. Mean ADCs, short/long diameters of LNs before chemotherapy between the whole positive and the negative LNs were compared by t test. Changes of mean ADCs in 3 groups were analyzed by 1-way ANOVA. The mean ADC of the whole positive LNs was (1.145 ±â€Š0.014) × 10⁻³ mm²/s, which was significantly lower than that of the whole negative LNs ([1.491 ±â€Š0.010] × 10⁻³ mm²/s; P < 0.05). The means of both short/long diameters in the whole positive LNs were significantly longer than those in the whole negative LNs (P < 0.05). In CR, PR, and SD groups, the mean ADC of metastatic LNs on the 3rd day, 7th day, 13th day, and 16th day following the chemotherapy were all higher than that of LNs before chemotherapy, respectively (all P < 0.05). In addition, significant difference was found between mean ADCs in any 2 time points (all P < 0.05), except between mean ADCs in the 3rd day and in the 7th day of the chemotherapy. In conclusion, ADC can be used as an early biomarker to predict the metastatic LNs' response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy in advanced GC in early stage.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To determine the optimal standardized uptake value (SUV) of (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose ((18)F-FDG) for positron emission tomography (PET) imaging, at which the PET-defined gross tumor volume (GTVPET) best matches with the pathological volume (GTVPATH) in the cervical cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten patients with the cervical cancer who underwent surgery were enrolled in this study. The excised specimens were processed for whole-mount serial sections and H-E staining. The tumor borders were outlined in sections under a microscope, histopathological images were scanned and the GTVPATH calculated. The GTVPET was delineated automatically by using various percentages relative to the maximal SUV and absolute SUV. The optimal threshold SUV was further obtained as the value at which the GTVPET best matched with the GTVPATH. RESULTS: An average of 85 ± 10% shrinkage of tissue was observed after the formalin fixation. The GTVPATH was 13.38 ± 2.80 cm(3) on average. The optimal threshold on percentile SUV and absolute SUV were 40.50% ± 3.16% and 7.45 ± 1.10, respectively. The correlation analysis showed that the optimal percentile SUV threshold was inversely correlated with GTVPATH (p<0.05) and tumor diameter (p<0.05). The absolute SUV was also positively correlated with SUVmax (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: The pathological volume could provide the more accurate tumor volume. The optimal SUV of FDG for PET imaging by use of GTVPATH as standard for cervical cancer target volume delineation was thus determined in this study, and more cases are being evaluated to substantiate this conclusion.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the accuracy of imaging-based gross tumor volume (GTV) compared with pathological volume in cervical cancer. METHODS: Ten patients with International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stage I-II cervical cancer were eligible for investigation and underwent surgery in this study. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography ((18)F-FDG PET)/computed tomography (CT) scans were taken the day before surgery. The GTVs under MRI and (18)F-FDG PET/CT (GTV-MRI, GTV-PET, GTV-CT) were calculated automatically by Eclipse treatment-planning systems. Specimens of excised uterine cervix and cervical cancer were consecutively sliced and divided into whole-mount serial sections. The tumor border of hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections was outlined under a microscope by an experienced pathologist. GTV through pathological image (GTV-path) was calculated with Adobe Photoshop. RESULTS: The GTVs (average ± standard deviation) delineated and calculated under CT, MRI, PET, and histopathological sections were 19.41 ± 11.96 cm(3), 12.66 ± 10.53 cm(3), 11.07 ± 9.44 cm(3), and 10.79 ± 8.71 cm(3), respectively. The volume of GTV-CT or GTV-MR was bigger than GTV-path, and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). No significant difference was observed between GTV-PET and GTV-path (P > 0.05). Spearman correlation analysis showed that GTV-CT, GTV-MRI, and GTV-PET were significantly correlated with GTV-path (P < 0.01). There was no significant difference in the lesion coverage factor among the three modalities. CONCLUSION: The present study showed that GTV defined under 40% of maximum standardized uptake value in PET images was very similar to the pathological volume of cervical cancer. This result should be replicated in a larger number of patients with cervical cancer in a future study of ours.

ABSTRACT

Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EHE) is a rare and low-grade vascular tumor, which usually occurs in the soft tissue, liver, breast, lung and skeleton. Here we submit a case with EHE of the clival region. A 58-year-old woman was admitted with a medical history of 3 months headache and 1 month visual deterioration. MRI revealed a well-circumscribed mass of 4.0 cm × 3.0 cm with bony invasion. The tumor was subtotally removed in a piecemeal fashion. Histologically, the tumor was composed of epithelioid cells with eosinophilic cytoplasm and intracytoplasmic vacuoles. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were positive for the markers CD31, CD34, factor VIII and vimentin. The pathological result was interpretated as EHE of the clival region. EHE is an uncommon vascular tumor, which is rarely seen in the clival region. Definitive diagnosis depends on histopathologic and immunohistochemical features.
