ABSTRACT

As terahertz (THz) and sub-THz region electromagnetic waves are becoming vital for industrial applications such as 5G wireless communication, so too are THz and sub-THz wave absorbing materials. Herein, we report the optical properties of monoclinic zirconia (m-ZrO2) nanoparticles in these frequency regions, with different crystalline sizes. The crystalline sizes of the three samples, measured by transmission electron microscopy, are 93 ± 23 nm (denoted 1), 28 ± 14 nm (denoted 2) and 2.6 ± 0.7 nm (denoted 3). X-ray diffraction and Raman spectra show that 1 and 2 have high crystallinity whereas 3 shows peak broadening due to its small crystalline size. Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) measurements of pelletised samples show that the small crystalline size sample exhibits larger absorption, e.g., the absorbance value at 300 GHz is 0.18 mm-1 (1), 0.04 mm-1 (2) and 1.11 mm-1 (3), and the related dielectric loss value (ε'') is 0.04 (1), 0.01 (2) and 0.82 (3), respectively. This is considered to be due to the proportional increase in surface water molecules for the small particle size sample due to the relative increase in surface area and under-coordinated atoms, shown by IR spectra. These results show that small crystalline size m-ZrO2 nanoparticles have potential as THz and sub-THz wave absorbing materials, which are crucial for noise reduction in THz and sub-THz wave technologies.

ABSTRACT

Effective reuse of waste heat energy is an important energy savings issue for green transformation. In general, phase-change heat storage materials cannot store energy for a prolonged period. If a solid material could conserve the accumulated thermal energy and release it only on demand, then its heat-storage application potential is considerably widened. From this angle, in 2015, we proposed the concept of a long-term heat-storage material, in which latent heat is preserved until the material is triggered by an external stimulus. This feature article describes long-term heat-storage ceramics composed of lambda-trititanium-pentoxide (λ-Ti3O5) from their discovery to heat-storage properties and future applications.

ABSTRACT

Food allergy impacts up to 10 % of the population and can result in life-threatening anaphylactic reactions. The pathogenesis of food allergy is not entirely understood but the disruption in naturally occurring oral tolerance is presumed to be involved. Research has been directed not only toward prevention of food allergy but on the restoration of oral tolerance by various means including immunotherapy (oral, sublingual, and epicutaneous), as well as adjunctive therapies including biologicals and probiotics. This review paper briefly discusses the involvement of oral tolerance in the pathogenesis of food allergy and how food allergy might be prevented; however, the main focus is on the potential for restoration of oral tolerance with various treatment modalities (oral immunotherapy with and without adjunctive therapies).

ABSTRACT

Alpha-gal syndrome is an unconventional food allergy, characterized by IgE-mediated hypersensitivity responses to the glycan galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose (alpha-gal) and not to a food-protein. In this review, we discuss how alpha-gal syndrome reframes our current conception of the mechanisms of pathogenesis of food allergy. The development of alpha-gal IgE is associated with tick bites though the possibility of other parasites promoting sensitization to alpha-gal remains. We review the immune cell populations involved in the sensitization and effector phases of alpha-gal syndrome and describe the current understanding of why allergic responses to ingested alpha-gal can be delayed by several hours. We review the foundation of management in alpha-gal syndrome, namely avoidance, but also discuss the use of antihistamines, mast cell stabilizers, and the emerging role of complementary and alternative therapies, biological products, and oral immunotherapy in the management of this condition. Alpha-gal syndrome influences the safety and tolerability of medications and medical devices containing or derived from mammalian products and impacts quality of life well beyond food choices.

ABSTRACT

In the last decade, there has been increasing research dedicated to food immunotherapy to induce clinical desensitization and provide protection by increasing clinical reaction thresholds. Results from recent food immunotherapy studies with differing routes of administration (oral, sublingual, and epicutaneous) suggest that food immunotherapy can induce clinical desensitization with varying levels of safety, however lasting tolerance has not been demonstrated. Furthermore, treatment side effects and dosing logistics may make the therapies difficult for some supporting the need for alternative treatment approaches. Peptide immunotherapy and DNA vaccine approaches should in theory allow for safer administration by decreasing allergenicity but proof of their clinical efficacy and immunogenicity remains to be proven. Biologic agents may allow for increased safety and rapid up-dosing of immunotherapy with the added benefit of treating multiple allergens simultaneously.
