ABSTRACT

An attempt has been made to contribute to the understanding of the symptoms and factors associated with the Blastocystis Hominis infection, as seen in persons seeking outside consultation from the Dermatological and Transmissible Diseases Department (DTDD) at the C.H.N.H. This is a case-control study carried out in people between the ages of 5 and 80 in a period from January to March 1999. The cases tested positive in parasitological tests for Blastocystis Hominis and were absent of other enteropathogens. The controls tested negative in parasitological tests for Blastocystis Hominis and were absent of other enteropatoghens. A clinical chart was used to register details of symptomatology and factors associated with the Blastocystis Hominis infection. 74 cases and 70 controls were studied, matched by sex and age. A statistical correlation was obtained (p<0.05) among symptomatic persons and presence of Blastocystis Hominis (91,9%). The symptomatology associated with the Blastocystis Hominis infection by order of statistical significance (p<0.05) was: Abdominal pain (OR=3) 1.47

ABSTRACT

Microbial-related dysplastic and neoplastic angiomatous proliferative processes are seen with increased frequency, particularly in the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The microbial-encoded or -induced mediators of angiopathogenesis in AIDS-associated Kaposi's sarcoma and bacillary angiomatosis are actively being sought. The present review addresses the historical, epidemiologic, clinical, etio- and histopathogenic aspects of the verruga peruana (VP). VP is a disease thus far endemic to high Andean valleys and characterized by dermal angioblastic proliferation in association with reactivation of latent Bartonella bacilliformis organisms. VP closely resembles AIDS-associated angiopathogenic manifestations at the clinical, histopathologic, and etiologic levels and therefore has been proposed as a model for the study of angiogenesis and endothelial cell dysplasia and neoplasia. Moreover, the recent epidemic outbreaks in endemic areas, the increased frequency of international travel to the region, the variable incubation period, and the possibility of not recognizing VP due to its rarity further underscore the relevance of studying this rare disorder and of including it in the differential diagnosis of angiomatous-proliferative disorders.

ABSTRACT

Verruga peruana is a vascular hyperplasia that is sometimes histologically mistaken for a malignant neoplasm. An infiltrative pattern with nuclear pleomorphism and mitoses is prominent in some lesions. From a series of lesions of verruga peruana, we selected five atypical lesions, two of them closely resembling epithelioid angiosarcoma. We used histologic criteria as well as morphometry and flow cytometry to further characterize the atypical features of the lesions. Histology and morphometry evidenced marked nuclear pleomorphism. Flow cytometry failed to reveal aneuploidy and disclosed about 10% of the cells to be in the S, G2 and M phase.
