ABSTRACT

High-energy-density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are essential to meet the requirements of emerging technologies for advanced power storage and enhanced device performance. The next generation of LIBs will require high-capacity anode materials that move beyond the lithium intercalation chemistry of conventional graphite electrodes. The use of two-dimensional (2D) bilayer structures offers immediate advantages in the development of LIBs. Herein, motivated by the recently synthesized 2D Cairo pentagon nickel diazenide (NiN2) material, we conduct a scrutiny of the intercalation process of lithium atoms in the interlayer gap of NiN2/NiN2 homostructure. Based on density functional theory (DFT), we demonstrate that the diffusion energy barrier of lithium move across the NiN2/NiN2 anode is relatively low, ranging from 0.058 to 0.52 eV, and the corresponding reversible capacity reaches a remarkable value of 499.0927 mA h g-1 per formula unit, surpassing that of graphite (372 mA h g-1). Furthermore, we investigate a 2D van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure composed of pre-strained structures of graphene and NiN2 for use as an anode material in LIBs. It is found that the introduction of graphene leads to improvements in both electrochemical activity and deformation characteristics. The presented results provide theoretical support for the potential of bilayer structures combining NiN2, suggesting them as promising candidates for the development of high-performance anode materials.

ABSTRACT

Background: Current medications especially the pentavalent antimonial compounds have been used as the first line treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), but they have limitations due to serious side effects such as drug resistance, cardio and nephrotoxicity, and high costs. Hence, the demand to find more usable drugs is evident. Synthesis and development of natural, effective, biocompatible, and harmless compounds against Leishmania major is the principal priority of this study. Methods: By electrospinning method, a new type of nanofiber were synthesized from royal jelly and propolis with different ratios. Nanofibers were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Contact angle, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The Half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50), Half-maximal effective concentration (EC50) and the 50% cytotoxic concentration (CC50) for different concentrations of nanofibers were determined using quantitative calorimetric methods. Inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and flow cytometry were performed as complementary tests. Results: The results showed that the proposed formulas provide a new achievement that, despite the significant killing activity on L. major, has negligible cytotoxicity on the host cells. Royal jelly nanofibers have significantly shown the best 72 hours results (IC50= 35 µg/ml and EC50=16.4 µg/ml) and the least cytotoxicity. Conclusion: This study presents a great challenge to introduce a new low-cost treatment method for CL, accelerate wound healing, and reduce scarring with minimal side effects and biocompatible materials. Royal jelly and propolis nanofibers significantly inhibit the growth of L. major in-vitro.

ABSTRACT

Choriocarcinoma is a rare kind of cancer, which may be either gestational or non-gestational. Choriocarcinoma is responsible for about a quarter of all documented neoplastic aneurysms. It is a descriptive case report of choriocarcinoma transmission from a donor, following kidney donation. A 45-year-old woman got a kidney from a 25-year-old woman who was taken to the hospital due to a non-traumatic cerebral hemorrhage. She delivered a healthy baby 48 days before her brain death. The transplant was successfully done. Five weeks' post-transplantation, the recipient had pain and erythema in the surgical area. Regarding the high level of beta-human chorionic gonadotropin in her blood, diagnostic tests were performed. Following the confirmation of the cancer, a five-phase chemotherapy plan with various pharmaceutical regimens was initiated. Liver function test values rose after the final round of chemotherapy, and the patient developed hepatic encephalopathy. Considering the thrombocytopenia, dialysis, or hemoperfusion, which are normally performed to reduce liver enzymes, were not initiated. Finally, she died due to the hepatic failure and disseminated intravascular coagulation. Although the nephrologists disagree on the optimal course of treatment, it seems that nephrectomy would be helpful in such instances. Physicians should be aware of the possibility of transplant-related choriocarcinoma in female donors of reproductive age who die because of intracerebral brain hemorrhage for unclear reasons. Every donor must undergo a thorough examination. It is critical to get documents, clarify history, and interview relatives.

ABSTRACT

Background: Various arthropods, including Rhipicephalus sanguineus and Ctenocephalides felis felis have been suggested as secondary vectors of Leishmania spp. many years ago. This study was conducted to determine zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) PCR positivity of reservoir hosts and their ectoparasites for Leishmania spp. in Segzi plain in Esfahan Province from October 2016 to October 2017. Methods: Microscopic examination and nested PCR were used to detect and identify Leishmania spp. isolated from rodents' ears and ectoparasites, and then, the results were confirmed by two methods, PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism and sequencing. Results: Totally, 93 rodents (92 Rhombomys opimus and one Nesokia indica) and nine different species of ectoparasites (n=527) including fleas, mites, and ticks were collected during different seasons in the study area. Fourteen R. opimus were positive for Leishmania spp. by microscopic examination while one N. indica and 77 R. opimus were positive by nested PCR. The infection rate of rodents with Leishmania major and Leishmania turanica was 39.79% (n=37) and 15.05% (n=14), respectively. Mixed natural infections with L. major and L. turanica were seen in rodents. Moreover, 72.22% of fleas (39/54), 75.0% of mites (5/8), and 100% of tick nymph (1/1) were PCR positive for Leishmania parasites. Conclusions: The highest rate of infection with L. major and L. turanica in R. opimus populations was observed in summer and spring, respectively. It is suggested that the role of L. turanica and the probable role of ectoparasites in the epidemiology of disease should be investigated. A Xenodiagnostic test is recommended for future study.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: COVID-19 has been spreading rapidly throughout the world, with nearly every country thus far documenting this infection. In this study, our aim was to evaluate the risk factors for increased mortality in deceased donor kidney transplant recipients with COVID-19 at a single center in Iran. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study in a single center. During the 17-month ongoing COVID19 pandemic in Iran, there were 153 deceased donor kidney recipients at our center with suspected COVID19 symptoms. Of these patients, 138 had positive COVID-19 tests, and thus a therapeutic regimen was commenced for these patients. Data were analyzed with SPSS version 16 software. RESULTS: The patients were predominantly male (83, 60.1%) with a median age of 47.09 ± 13.75 years and a median time since transplant of 51 months (IQR, 1-276 months). Among these patients, 84 (60.8%) had hypertension and 43 (31.2%) had diabetes mellitus. We observed a significant relationship between disease severity and mortality (P < .001). After risk adjustments for age, presence of diabetes mellitus and hypertension and blood group type were factors that showed a significantly higher risk of death. CONCLUSIONS: Deceased donor kidney transplant recipients with confirmed COVID-19 experienced less fever as an initial symptom. However, recipients with COVID-19 and an underlying disease had a higher rate of mortality, severity of infection, and progression of disease. Appropriate management of renal complications and vaccinations in deceased donor kidney transplant recipients may help lead to more favorable outcomes.

ABSTRACT

In present work, the treatment of aromatic compounds of simulated wastewater was performed by Fenton and NaOCl/Fe2+ processes. The model solution was prepared based on the wastewater composition of Diisocyanate unit of Karoon Petrochemical Company/Iran containing Diamino-toluenes, Nitro-phenol, Mononitro-toluene, Nitro-cresol, and Dinitro-toluene. Experiments were conducted in a batch mode to examine the effects of operating variables such as pH, oxidant dosages, ferrous ion concentration and numbers of feeding on COD removal. Taguchi experimental design was used to determine the optimum conditions. The COD removal efficiency under optimum conditions (suggested by Taguchi design) in Fenton and NaOCl/Fe2+ processes was 88.7% and 83.4%, respectively. The highest contribution factor in Fenton process belongs to pH (47.47%) and in NaOCl/Fe2+ process belongs to NaOCl/pollutants (50.26%). High regression coefficient (R2: 0.98) obtained for Taguchi method, indicates that models are statistically significant and are in well agreement with each other. The NaOCl/Fe2+ process utilizing a conventional oxidant, in comparison to hydrogen peroxide, is an efficient cost effective process for COD removal from real wastewater, although the removal efficiency is not as high as in Fenton process; however it is a suitable process to replace Fenton process in industrial scale for wastewater involved aromatic compounds with high COD. This process was successfully applied in Karoon Petrochemical Company/Iran.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: We evaluated the posttransplant complications resulting from infections and their association with graft function, immunosuppressive drugs, and mortality. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 142 kidney allograft recipients were followed for 1 year after transplantation. The patients' status was assessed during regular visits, and data including clinical characteristics, infections, serum creatinine level, acute rejection episodes, immunosuppressive regimen, graft function, and mortality were recorded and analyzed. RESULTS: Infections occurred in 77 patients (54%). The lower urinary (42%) and respiratory (6.3%) tracts were the most common sites of infection. The most frequent causative organisms were Klebsiella in 34 (24%) and cytomegalovirus in 25 patients (18%). Wound infection occurred in 7 patients (5%). The mortality rate was 7.7% and infection-related death was seen in 5 patients (3.5%) who developed sepsis. Graft loss was seen in 16 patients (11%), of whom 2 developed cytomegalovirus infection, 2 experienced urinary tract infection, and 5 developed sepsis and died. Mycobacterial and hepatitis C infections were noticeably rare (0.7% and 2.8%, respectively). CONCLUSION: This study showed that infections are important causes of morbidity and mortality during the posttransplant period. We recommend that serologic tests be performed before and after transplantation to recognize and meticulously follow those who are at risk. In our study, high-risk patients were those with elevated serum creatinine levels who received high doses of immunosuppressive drugs. As the urinary tract is the most common site of infection, early removal of urethral catheter is recommended to reduce the risk of infection.
