ABSTRACT

Schrankiana are gastrointestinal parasites of anurans, distributed throughout Central and South America. Schrankiana formosula and Schrankiana inconspicata are some of the most commonly reported species parasitising anurans from Brazil, and the morphological differences between them are unclear. In the present study, we redescribed S. formosula based on a re-examination of type series and newly collected material from the frog Leptodactylus pentadactylus in the state of Amapá, Brazil. Additionally, we re-examined the type series of S. inconspicata, and propose it as a junior synonym of S. formosula. We provide detailed morphological and morphometric data with intraspecific variation analyses and new molecular data for S. formosula. In the present phylogeny, S. formosula formed a well-supported clade with Raillietnema sp. and Labeonema synodontisi. Based on molecular phylogenetic analyses and some morphological similarities, our findings support the hypothesis that Schrankiana is a member of the family Cosmocercidae, not Atractidae. Additionally, we provide the first ultrastructural descriptions of S. formosula, and establish the species' phylogenetic position from the Cosmocercidae.

ABSTRACT

Temperature and nutrition are suggested as the primary factors affecting larval survival during the transition from endogenous to exogenous feeding in fish. However, little is known about its simultaneous impact during this period. In this study, Seriola rivoliana eggs were subjected to a constant 24 °C (CTE) and a daily temperature fluctuation (DTF) between 22.8 and 25.2 °C until oil droplet exhaustion (5.5 days after hatching). On the other hand, marine fish larvae mostly rely on live feed, with certain nutritional deficiencies such as poor long-chain fatty acids. Thus, rotifer Brachionus rotundiformis enrichment was simultaneously evaluated with temperature using three enrichment diets: Ori-green, S.presso, and a Domestic emulsion. For this purpose, the five experimental groups were established in triplicate using six 100-L tanks with three 10-L containers inside (18 experimental units in total). One hundred eggs were incubated, using a green water system, and 10 rotifers mL-1 were offered at mouth opening. After oil droplet exhaustion, survival was only affected by temperature (P < 0.01), being higher at DTF compared to CTE. At the same stage, Domestic emulsion resulted in bigger larvae than Ori-green. In a further assay at 3.7 DAH, the relative expression of the trypsin gene was higher at Domestic emulsion compared to S.presso and Ori-green. This study indicates that daily temperature fluctuation can improve larval performance and low levels of EPA and DHA in Domestic emulsion enriched rotifers were not critical for Seriola rivoliana at first feeding.

BACKGROUND: Receptive vaginal penetration skills have been implicated in the etiology, explanatory models, and treatment of genito-pelvic pain penetration disorder (GPPPD). However, there are no psychometric skills measures designed to screen, assess, and stratify GPPPD. AIM: We aimed to develop and psychometrically evaluate a new scale-the Vaginal Penetration Skills Scale (VPSS)-to screen, assess, and stratify GPPPD. METHODS: This study included 148 Brazilian females with GPPPD symptoms (113 lifelong and 35 acquired) and 251 Brazilian females without sexual complaints. We conducted factor analyses considering all participants (n = 399). Then, we conducted latent class analysis within the GPPPD group to identify clusters of individuals with similar VPSS profiles. We assessed convergent validity through intercorrelation with the Brazilian versions of the Female Genital Self-Image Scale (FGSIS) and the 6-item Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI-6). OUTCOMES: We developed complete and short-form versions of the VPSS (VPSS-29 and VPSS-SF11, respectively), each with 3 dimensions, to screen, assess, and stratify GPPPD. RESULTS: Factor analysis yielded a 3-factor VPSS model with the "Nonsexual Genital Self-Exploration," "Nonsexual Vaginal Penetration Skills," and "Sexual Vaginal Penetration Skills" dimensions for both VPSS versions. The reliability was excellent for the VPSS-29 (ω = 0.981, α = 0.981) and the VPSS-SF11 (ω = 0.959, α = 0.961). All 3 dimensions could detect significant differences between patients with GPPPD and healthy females. They also differentiated the patients with GPPPD, distinguishing gradient levels. For convergent validity, we found moderate to strong correlations (rho = 0.715-0.745) between the VPSS, FGSIS, and FSFI-6. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: The VPSS can be applied easily in both clinical and research settings. STRENGTHS AND LIMITATIONS: The VPSS provides a concise and thorough evaluation of receptive vaginal penetration skills in both sexual and nonsexual contexts among patients with GPPPD. The sample had limited diversity regarding gender and sexual orientation; therefore, it is important to validate the use of this scale in populations beyond the cisgender heterosexual female population to ensure its applicability in diverse settings. CONCLUSION: These results support the reliability and psychometric validity of the VPSS as a self-report measure to screen, assess, and stratify GPPPD symptoms.

ABSTRACT

Methanogenic communities of hypersaline microbial mats of Guerrero Negro, Baja California Sur, Mexico, have been recognized to be dominated by methylotrophic methanogens. However, recent studies of environmental samples have evidenced the presence of hydrogenotrophic and methyl-reducing methanogenic members, although at low relative abundances. Physical and geochemical conditions that stimulate the development of these groups in hypersaline environments, remains elusive. Thus, in this study the taxonomic diversity of methanogenic archaea of two sites of Exportadora de Sal S.A was assessed by mcrA gene high throughput sequencing from microcosm experiments with different substrates (both competitive and non-competitive). Results confirmed the dominance of the order Methanosarcinales in all treatments, but an increase in the abundance of Methanomassiliiccocales was also observed, mainly in the treatment without substrate addition. Moreover, incubations supplemented with hydrogen and carbon dioxide, as well as the mixture of hydrogen, carbon dioxide and trimethylamine, managed to stimulate the richness and abundance of other than Methanosarcinales methanogenic archaea. Several OTUs that were not assigned to known methanogens resulted phylogenetically distributed into at least nine orders. Environmental samples revealed a wide diversity of methanogenic archaea of low relative abundance that had not been previously reported for this environment, suggesting that the importance and diversity of methanogens in hypersaline ecosystems may have been overlooked. This work also provided insights into how different taxonomic groups responded to the evaluated incubation conditions.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The tropical gar (Atractosteus tropicus), a member of the Lepisosteidae family, is native to regions extending from southeastern Mexico to southern Costa Rica. This species serves as a unique bridge between tetrapods and teleosts due to its phylogenetic position, slow evolutionary rate, dense genetic map, gene similarities with humans, and ease of laboratory cultivation. As a taxonomic sister group to teleosts like the zebrafish (Danio rerio), known for its high regenerative capacity, it remains unclear whether the tropical gar shares a similar ability for regeneration. RESULTS: This study aims to elucidate the caudal fin regeneration process in tropical gar through skeletal and histological staining methods. Juvenile specimens were observed over a two-month period, during which they were fed brine shrimp, and anesthetized with 1% eugenol for caudal fin amputation. Samples were collected at various days post-amputation (dpa). Alcian blue and alizarin red staining were used to highlight skeletal regeneration, particularly the formation of new cartilage, while histological staining with hematoxylin and eosin was performed to observe tissue regeneration at the amputation site. CONCLUSIONS: The findings reveal a remarkable ability for caudal fin regeneration in juvenile tropical gar. Given the Garfish evolutionary relationship with teleosts, this opens new avenues for research into tissue regeneration across different groups of Actinopterygii.

ABSTRACT

Chronic liver disease is closely linked to dietary intake factors, such as high consumption of simple carbohydrates including sucrose. In this study, the influence of sucrose on the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common primary liver malignancy, was explored. Using the hepatocarcinogen diethylnitrosamine (DEN) to induce HCC in the rat, we co-administered sucrose with DEN. The co-administration significantly modified body, liver and pancreas weight, as well as, serum fatty acids and triglycerides. DEN caused liver structural alteration, fibrosis, and tumor formation; surprisingly, co-administration with sucrose restored hepatic lipids, improved liver architecture, and reduced fibrosis and tumor development. Sucrose intake negatively regulated tumor markers and cell proliferation, and reduced the expression of genes associated with lipid metabolism and oxidative stress response. These findings highlight a hepatoprotective effect of sucrose during DEN-induced hepatocarcinogenesis, underlining an intriguing role of high sucrose consumption during HCC development and providing new insights as well as possible pathways of cellular protection under sucrose intake on hepatocarcinogenesis.

ABSTRACT

Urban Heat Islands are a major environmental and public health concern, causing temperature increase in urban areas. This study used satellite imagery and machine learning to analyze the spatial and temporal patterns of land surface temperature distribution in the Metropolitan Area of Merida (MAM), Mexico, from 2001 to 2021. The results show that land surface temperature has increased in the MAM over the study period, while the urban footprint has expanded. The study also found a high correlation (r> 0.8) between changes in land surface temperature and land cover classes (urbanization/deforestation). If the current urbanization trend continues, the difference between the land surface temperature of the MAM and its surroundings is expected to reach 3.12 °C ± 1.11 °C by the year 2030. Hence, the findings of this study suggest that the Urban Heat Island effect is a growing problem in the MAM and highlight the importance of satellite imagery and machine learning for monitoring and developing mitigation strategies.

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the effectiveness of various chemical methods, both ultrasound-assisted and non-assisted, for extracting cellulose from banana pseudostem (BPS) waste, comparing the results with commercial pine and eucalyptus cellulose fibers. Delignification treatments with NaOH (25% and 30%) and H2O2 (8%) were evaluated, applied with both conventional and focused sonication. Ultrasound-assisted methods, particularly with NaOH, achieved cellulose percentages as high as 99.5%. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that NaOH treatments significantly increased the cellulose crystallinity index, reaching up to 67.9%, surpassing commercial fibers. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results showed that NaOH treatments, especially at 30%, improved fiber morphology and exposure. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated that methods using NaOH and focused sonication enhanced the thermal stability of the cellulose. Compared to commercial fibers, some samples obtained with the proposed methods demonstrated higher purity, yield, and thermal stability, highlighting the effectiveness of ultrasound-assisted and NaOH methods.

Introduction: Dengue is a public health challenge worldwide. Brazil registered about 70% of cases in Latin America in 2023; in 2024, the country is experiencing an unprecedented increase in the number of infected individuals. By May 2024, more than 4 million people were infected. Our goal was to: (1) determine the epidemiology of dengue cases and their spatiotemporal distribution and (2) carry out a survey of the storm drains and through a geospatial analysis to determine their possible correlation with cases of dengue in Presidente Prudente, São Paulo, Brazil. Methods: Cases and information on the habitat of mosquito in the storm drain underground drainage system from 2020 to 2021 were obtained from public agencies. Larvae, pupae, and Ae. aegypti were identified according to species and described in taxonomic keys. Kernel density maps were constructed. Results: From 1996 to 2023, the prevalence of cases peaked in 2016 and 2019, and in 2023 reached alarming levels, and the city was considered hyperendemic. In 2021, 2,609 cases were registered with 2 clusters of high density. Of 5,492 storm drains analyzed, 18.0% were found to have water, 9.0% had larvae or pupae of Aedes aegypti and 91.0% were classified as dirty or damaged. A direct correlation between the kernel layer of cases in 2021 with the kernel layer of storm drains containing water (r = 0.651) and larvae and pupae (r = 0.576) was found, suggesting that storm drains are risk factors and have an impact on the maintenance of dengue endemicity. The high number of damaged units found demonstrated the lack of storm drain management, compromising the urban drainage system and possibly contributing to dengue outbreaks. Conclusion: Policymakers may use these findings to improve existing dengue control strategies focusing on the control of storm drains and increase local and global perspectives on reducing dengue outbreaks.

ABSTRACT

Surgical resection of the stenotic segment with end-to-end anastomosis is considered the gold standard in postintubation tracheal stenosis. However, outcomes of this concrete aetiology are not well described. With the aim to examine the extent, range and characteristics of the existing evidence, a scoping review was performed. Data sources included MEDLINE, Scopus, Ovid and the Cochrane databases. Inclusion criteria consisted of studies in adult patients with postintubation tracheal stenosis that reported characteristics, surgical management and outcomes. A total of 125 articles were identified, of which 10 were included in the final analysis. All studies were case reports or case series (level 4 evidence) grouping 110 patients, 75 males and 35 females. The age ranged from 15 to 71 years. Cotton-Myer stenosis grade was 1 [1 (0.9%)], 2 [25 (22.7%)], 3 [70 (63.6%)] and 4 [14 (12.7%)]. Stenosis location was in the tracheal upper-third in 108 (98.2%), in the middle-third in 1 (0.9%) and in the lower-third in 1 (0.9%). Stenosis length ranged from 1 to 5.6 cm. Follow-up ranged from 1 to 60 months (2 years for the most). Most frequent complications were transitory dysphagia in 13 (11.3%), granuloma formation in 8 (7.3%), dehiscence or air leak in 5 (4.5%) and wound infection in 4 (3.6%). Restenosis rate ranged from 2% to 25%. There was no perioperative mortality. Tracheal resection and primary anastomosis in postintubation tracheal stenosis appear to be safe and effective in the short and mid-terms; however, the very low level of evidence found prevents definitive conclusions.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Translation is a fundamental process of life. In eukaryotes, the elongation step of translation is highly conserved and is driven by eukaryotic translation elongation factors (eEF)1A and eEF2. A significant variation of the elongation is the activity of eukaryotic elongation factor (eEF) 3 in Saccharomyces cerevisiae encoded by the gene yeast elongation factor (YEF3) with orthologs in all fungal species, a few algae, and some protists. In S. cerevisiae, YEF3 is an essential gene and eEF3 plays a critical role in translation elongation, as it promotes binding of the ternary complex acylated-Transfer RNA (tRNA)-eEF1A-Guanosine-5'-triphosphate (GTP) to the aminoacyl (A) site of the ribosome, the release of uncharged tRNAs after peptide translocation, and ribosome recycling. Even though YEF3 was discovered more than 40 years ago, eEF3 has been characterized almost exclusively in S. cerevisiae. Methods: We undertook an in vivo genetic approach to assess the functional conservation of eEF3 across phylogenetically distant fungal species. Results: We found that eEF3 from Zygosaccharomyces rouxii and Candida glabrata (both belonging to phylum Ascomycota), Ustilago maydis (phylum Basidiomycota), and Gonapodya prolifera (phylum Monoblepharomycota), but not Aspergillus nidulans (phylum Ascomycota), supported the growth of S. cerevisiae lacking the endogenous YEF3 gene. We also proved that eEF3 is an essential gene in the ascomycetes C. glabrata and A. nidulans. Discussion: Given that most existing knowledge on fungal translation has only been obtained from S. cerevisiae, our findings beyond this organism showed variability in the elongation process in Fungi. We also proved that eEF3 is essential in pathogenic fungi, opening the possibility of using eEF3 as a target to fight candidiasis.

ABSTRACT

Hard anodizing is used to improve the anodic films' mechanical qualities and aluminum alloys' corrosion resistance. Applications for anodic oxide coatings on aluminum alloys include the space environment. In this work, the aluminum alloys 2024-T3 (Al-Cu), 6061-T6 (Al-Mg-Si), and 7075-T6 (Al-Zn) were prepared by hard anodizing electrochemical treatment using citric and sulfur acid baths at different concentrations. The aim of the work is to observe the effect of citric acid on the microstructure of the substrate, the mechanical properties, the corrosion resistance, and the morphology of the hard anodic layers. Hard anodizing was performed on three different aluminum alloys using three citric-sulfuric acid mixtures for 60 min and using current densities of 3.0 and 4.5 A/dm2. Vickers microhardness (HV) measurements and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were utilized to determine the mechanical characteristics and microstructure of the hard anodizing material, and electrochemical techniques to understand the corrosion kinetics. The result indicates that the aluminum alloy 6061-T6 (Al-Mg-Si) has the maximum hard-coat thickness and hardness. The oxidation of Zn and Mg during the anodizing process found in the 7075-T6 (Al-Zn) alloy promotes oxide formation. Because of the high copper concentration, the oxide layer that forms on the 2024-T6 (Al-Cu) Al alloy has the lowest thickness, hardness, and corrosion resistance. Citric and sulfuric acid solutions can be used to provide hard anodizing in a variety of aluminum alloys that have corrosion resistance and mechanical qualities on par with or better than traditional sulfuric acid anodizing.

This study investigated the health-functional properties of a lactic fermented pomegranate juice (FPJ) enriched with pomegranate seed oil (FPJO) by using the fruit-origin strain Lactiplantibacillus paraplantarum CRL 2051 (FPJO-CRL2051). For this aim, the in vitro human antiplatelet aggregation effect and antioxidant activities were determined in the fermented juices while in vivo studies using high-fat-diet (HFD) C57BL/6 mice fed with a high-fat diet or pomegranate fermented juices for 8 weeks were performed. A high anti-platelet aggregation activity for FPJO-CRL2051 was determined. The formulated juice was administered to C57BL/6 HFD mice over 8 weeks, which showed a significant decrease in triglycerides, LDL-C, and pro-inflammatory cytokines levels. The FPJO-CRL2051 administration was effective in ameliorating liver damage caused by HFD, reducing fat accumulation and oxidative biomarkers, and improving the liver fatty acid profile by incorporation of conjugated fatty acids. This study shows the significance of lactic fermentation in developing novel fermented plant-based beverages with enhanced functional activities with a circular economy approach for the prevention of metabolic disorders.

This research identified the bioactive compounds and antioxidant capacity of the extractable (EP) and non-extractable (NEP) polyphenol fractions of berrycactus (BC). Additionally, the effects of BC and its residue (BCR) on preventing AOM/DSS-induced early colon carcinogenesis were evaluated in vivo. Male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly assigned to six groups (n = 12/group): healthy control (C), AOM/DSS, BC, BCR, BC+AOM/DSS, and BCR+AOM/DSS. NEP was obtained through acid hydrolysis using H2SO4 and HCl (1 M or 4 M). The HCl-NEP fraction exhibited the highest total phenolic and flavonoid content, while condensed tannins were more abundant in the H2SO4-NEP fraction. A total of 33 polyphenols were identified by UPLC-QTOF-MSE in both EP and NEP, some of which were novel to BC. Both NEP hydrolysates demonstrated significant total antioxidant capacity (TEAC), with HCl-NEP exhibiting the highest ORAC values. The BC+AOM/DSS and BCR+AOM/DSS groups exhibited fewer aberrant crypt foci (p < 0.05), reduced colonic epithelial injury, and presented lower fecal ß-glucuronidase activity, when compared to AOM/DSS group. No differences in butyric acid concentrations were observed between groups. This study presents novel bioactive compounds in EP and NEP from BC that contribute to chemopreventive effects in early colon carcinogenesis, while reducing fecal ß-glucuronidase activity and preserving colonic mucosal integrity.

Age-related liver changes can have important implications for health and metabolic function. This study aimed to describe the morphoquantitative alterations of the liver in senescent rats compared to adult rats. Twelve male rats were used, divided into 6-month-old adults (group A) and 36-month-old senescent rats (group S). Morphometric and histopathological studies, quantification of collagen types I and III, and stereological analyses were performed to determine the volume density of mononucleated (VvhepM) and binucleated (VvhepB) hepatocyte nuclei, surface area density (SvhepM), and number density (NvhepM) of mononucleated hepatocyte nuclei. The findings reveal an alteration of the normal liver tissue architecture in senescent rats and the presence of inflammatory lesions and fibrosis. In addition, there was a decrease in body and liver mass and volume. Group S showed a significant reduction in VvhepM and NvhepM; however, SvhepM was significantly higher. No significant differences were noted in the percentage of binucleated hepatocytes between the two groups. This study reveals substantial morphological changes in the aging liver, with possible functional implications. More research is needed on the underlying mechanisms and their consequences at older ages.

ABSTRACT

C-tetra(4-methoxyphenyl)calix[4]resorcinarene was synthesized by hydrochloric acid-catalysed cyclocondensation of resorcinol and 4-methoxybenzaldehyde. Under these conditions, the reaction produces a conformational mixture of crown and chair structural conformers, which were separated and characterized by chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques. The antioxidant activity of both conformers was measured by using the DPPH assay, through which it was observed that the chair conformer showed greater antioxidant activity (IC50 = 47.46 ppm) than the crown conformer (IC50 = 78.46 ppm). Additionally, it was observed that the mixture of both conformers presented lower antioxidant activity than either conformer in isolation. The results found suggest that the chair conformer has efficient antioxidant activity that makes it a potential target for further research.

ABSTRACT

Empyema necessitatis is a rare complication of an untreated or inadequately controlled empyema. We present the case of an 11-year-old female adolescent living in precarious conditions, overcrowding, incomplete vaccinations, irregular dental hygiene, and no significant family or personal medical history. The patient started with symptoms one week prior to her hospitalization, presenting a persistent sporadic dry cough, and was later diagnosed with complicated pneumonia, resulting in the placement of an endopleural tube. Vancomycin (40 mg/kg/day) and ceftriaxone (75 mg/kg/day) were administered. However, the clinical evolution was unfavorable, with fever and respiratory distress, so a right jugular catheter was placed. The CT scan showed a loculated collection that occupied the entire right lung parenchyma and pneumothorax at the right upper lobe level. After four days of treatment, the patient still presented purulent drainage with persistent right pleural effusion syndrome. P. melaninogenica and D. pneumosintes were identified from the purulent collection on the upper right lobe, so the antimicrobial treatment was adapted to a glycopeptide, Teicoplanin, at a weight-based dosing of 6 mg/kg/day and Metronidazole at a weight-based dosing of 30 mg/kg/day. In addition, VAC therapy was used for 26 days with favorable resolution.

ABSTRACT

The prevalence of mental health problems constitutes an open challenge for modern societies, particularly for low and middle-income countries with wide gaps in mental health support. With this in mind, five datasets were analyzed to track mental health trends in Mexico City during the pandemic's first year. This included 33,234 responses to an online mental health risk questionnaire, 349,202 emergency calls, and city epidemiological, mobility, and online trend data. The COVID-19 mental health risk questionnaire collects information on socioeconomic status, health conditions, bereavement, lockdown status, and symptoms of acute stress, sadness, avoidance, distancing, anger, and anxiety, along with binge drinking and abuse experiences. The lifeline service dataset includes daily call statistics, such as total, connected, and abandoned calls, average quit time, wait time, and call duration. Epidemiological, mobility, and trend data provide a daily overview of the city's situation. The integration of the datasets, as well as the preprocessing, optimization, and machine learning algorithms applied to them, evidence the usefulness of a combined analytic approach and the high reuse potential of the data set, particularly as a machine learning training set for evaluating and predicting anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as general psychological support needs and possible system loads.

Introduction: Thyroid cancer is the most common cancer in women in Ecuador. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the demographics and clinical and treatment variables of patients with papillary or follicular thyroid cancer, referred to as differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC), treated at a third-level hospital in Quito, Ecuador. Methods: We reviewed retrospectively the medical records of patients with DTC, who underwent surgical treatment, from 1990 to 2019. Data included demographics, pathological information, clinical stage, type of surgery, and radioactive iodine (RAI) adjuvant therapy. Patients were monitored for up to 29 years (median follow-up time 6.9 years). Results: The corrected overall 5-, 10-, 20-, and 30-year survival rates (Kaplan-Meier) were 93%, 85%, 70%, and 63%, respectively. On univariate analysis, age, histological type, tumor grade, histological variants, capsular invasion, vascular invasion, tumor size, clinical stage, distant metastases at diagnosis, surgical margins, extrathyroidal invasion, radioactive iodine adjuvant treatment, and locoregional recurrence were found to be significant prognostic factors. In a multivariate analysis, the following independent variables: age over 55 years, extrathyroidal spread, metastasis at diagnosis, and stage II to IV raised the risk of death (hazard risk) (HR). Conclusions: Age over 55 years, extrathyroidal spread, metastasis at diagnosis, and advanced clinical stage were found to have a harmful prognosis and an increased risk of death in a series of Ecuadorian patients surgically treated for a DTC.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: To examine the relationship between neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), age, and mortality rates after emergency surgery. METHODS: In this observational study, a total of 851 patients undergoing emergency surgery between January 2022 and January 2023 were retrospective examined. Using 30 and 180 days mortality data, NLR differences and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were analyzed using a 65-year threshold. A multiple logistic regression model was constructed incorporating age and NLR. Finally, Kaplan-Meier curves were constructed for mortality. RESULTS: Among 851 patients, the 30 and 180 days mortality rates were 5.2% and 10.8%, respectively. Median NLR in 30 days was 5.6 (3.1 to 9.6) in survivors and 8.7 (4.6 to 13.4) in deceased patients (p < 0.0001); in 180 days, it was 5.5 (3.1 to 9.8) and 8.8 (4.8 to 14.5), respectively (p < 0.0001). In the 30- and 180-days mortality analyses, median NLRs were 5.1 (2.9 to 8.9) and 4.9 (2.9 to 8.8) in survivors and 10.6 (6.9 to 16.6) and 9.3 (5.4 to 14.9) in deceased patients aged < 65 years, respectively. The ROC AUC in patients younger than 65 years was higher for 30 days (AUC 0.75; 95% CI 0.72 to 0.87) and 180 days (AUC 0.73; 95% CI 0.64 to 0.81). Multivariate logistic regression revealed that the NLR (odds ratio, 1.03 [95% CI 1.005 to 1.053; p = 0.0133) and age (odds ratio, 1.05 [95% CI 1.034 to 1.064; p < 0.0001) significantly contributed to the model. Survival analysis revealed differences in the 180 days mortality (p = 0.0006). CONCLUSION: We observed differences in preoperative NLR between patients who survived and those who died after emergency surgery. Age impacts the use of NLR as a mortality risk factor.
