ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: to determine risk factors for suicidal behavior among students and employees of a federal public university in the Brazilian Western Amazon. METHODS: an analytical cross-sectional study of survey and association between variables with a sample of 475 participants. Statistical analyzes were performed using the Mann-Whitney test, Pearson's chi-square test, likelihood ratio test or Fisher's exact test and a logistic regression model. A significance level of 5% was used (p-value< 0.05). RESULTS: a higher proportion of suicidal behavior was found in younger participants, females, who had no religion or had one, but were non-practicing, who did not have children and/or had a monthly family income of less than two minimum wages. Lower proportions of suicidal behavior were identified in heterosexuals and/or married or in a stable relationship. CONCLUSION: the study suggests a relationship between sociodemographic factors and suicidal behavior in the studied academic community.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective to evaluate the association of sleep quality and the presence of burnout syndrome with the epidemiological profile of higher education teachers. Methods an observational, analytical, cross-sectional study of 140 teachers, using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the Maslach Burnout Inventory. Results in the sample, the majority was female (54.3%), aged between 26 and 40 years (58.6%). There was a predominance of teachers with a specialist title (48.6%), with a salary range of up to R$ 5,000.00 (85.7%), with two or more employment relationships (52.1%). It was found that teachers who received more than R$ 5,000.00 (p=0.003), with two or more jobs, classified the usual sleep efficiency as poor/feeble (p=0.027). However, those with good subjective sleep quality had lower scores in the Emotional exhaustion (p=0.005) and Depersonalization domains in relation to the syndrome (p=0.023). Conclusion several factors contribute to the development of sleep-related disorders in teachers, making them more susceptible to the manifestation of burnout. Contributions to practice the results can support preventive measures for the health of teachers and maintain the quality of their work activities, aiming to reduce the mediation effect of the variables that favor psychological exhaustion.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic made it necessary to rapidly adapt ways of working, forcing adoption of home working, and public higher education institutions were no exception to this trend. Objectives: To analyze the initial phase of implementation of emergency teleworking at a public university, including its ramifications and repercussions for workers. Methods: This article constitutes a narrative account of the university's experience with teleworking, evaluated by analysis of a report produced by the institution after a survey of the needs of workers assigned to emergency teleworking because of the health crisis. Report of the experience: The analysis identified both opportunities and challenges created by the experience, which involved 50% of the institution's workers who were assigned to this modality of working. The most important opportunities were a perception of increased productivity compared to on-site working and improvements in quality of life and mental health. In counterpoint, barriers observed included worsening of mental health symptoms in the majority of workers who already had some type of mental disorder before the pandemic, work overload, difficulties with reconciling work routines with domestic activities, and a lack of the conditions and training needed to work from home. Conclusions: It should be emphasized that the various characteristics observed are related to the initial stages of adaptation to pandemic conditions and the new working routine. In counterpoint, some of the characteristics identified could offer important clues for continuation of teleworking and support for the university administration's planning for the future.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Workers on leave awaiting confirmation of coronavirus infection may experience worry and anticipatory stress. Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess the anxiety levels of employees at a public university in the state of São Paulo who were put on leave due to suspected or confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection and to correlate their anxiety levels with personal and work-related variables. Methods: This cross-sectional study used an online survey to collect data from employees who took a diagnostic test for COVID-19. The participants' anxiety level was measured using Greenberger and Padesky's Anxiety Inventory, while data on personal and work-related variables were collected through a socio-demographic questionnaire. Results: Most of the 153 participants (76.5%) reported anxiety symptoms. COVID-19 infection was confirmed in 51%. The highest prevalence of severe anxiety (27%) was among employees who had indirect contact with COVID-19 patients. Three variables - being a woman, being a regular employee, and previous physical health problems - were responsible for a higher risk of anxiety. Conclusions: This study's findings indicate the need to protect the mental health of the university's employees.
