ABSTRACT

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection can affect multiple organs due to activation of an inflammatory response. One of the key components of this response is the activation of immunoglobulin A (IgA), thus causing endothelial injury and inflammation. Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP) has been rarely reported in adult patients as a complication of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection. In this report, we present a case of HSP occurring one week after the diagnosis of COVID-19 in a 23-year-old woman. Her symptoms included nausea, vomiting, diffused abdominal pain, joint pain, hematuria, and palpable purpura of the lower extremities. She was treated with intravenous methylprednisolone sodium succinate, followed by oral prednisone therapy, which resulted in clinical improvement, including resolution of abdominal and joint pain as well as skin rashes, without remaining renal complication.

ABSTRACT

Objective To analyze the distribution and type characteristics of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in women in Shiyan, Hubei region, so as to provide a basis for the prevention and treatment of HPV infection. Methods From January 2019 to December 2020, a sample of 3,180 women in XX region who had sexual intercourse experience were randomly selected, and their HPV genotypes were tested using flow-through hybridization, then the distribution characteristics and types of HPV infection in women of different ages were observed. Results Among of 3 180 patients, HPV infection was predominant in women aged 31-50 years , with 25.85% (822/3 180) aged 31-40 years and 22.08% (702/3,180) aged 41-50 years. HPV infection was the least prevalent in the ≤25 and >60 years age groups, with 428 cases and 289 cases respectively. HPV infection occurred in 1 310 out of 3 180 women , with a positive infection rate of 41.19% (1 310/3 180). HPV infection was most prevalent in the ≤25 years and ≥60 years age groups, accounting for 56.78% and 67.13% respectively. Single infection was the main infection type in all age groups, accounting for 76.03%. Twenty-one HPV genetic subtypes were detected in the subjects, out of a total of 1 918 strains of the virus. The main high-risk subtypes for single infection were HPV16, HPV52 and HPV58, accounting for 13.92%, 13.87% and 12.57% respectively, followed by HPV53 and HPV33, accounting for 7.61% and 5.58% respectively. The predominant low-risk subtypes for single infection were HPV11, HPV8 and HPV6, with accounting for 7.51%, 5.47% and 5.01% respectively. Conclusion HPV infection in women in Shiyan, Hubei region is predominantly in the ≤25 and ≥60 years age groups, and early clinical screening and preventive measures such as vaccination for high-risk HPV typing are of vital importance.

ABSTRACT

Staphylococcus epidermidis and a Gram negative bacillus (GNB) were isolated in blood cultures from a 68-year-old male with cancer. The GNB was suspicious for Brucella spp., but was identified using 16S rDNA sequencing as Aureimonas altamirensis. The complexity of the identification is described in this case study.

ABSTRACT

The accurate scoring of rigid-body docking orientations represents one of the major difficulties in protein-protein docking prediction. Other challenges are the development of faster and more efficient sampling methods and the introduction of receptor and ligand flexibility during simulations. Overall, good discrimination of near-native docking poses from the very early stages of rigid-body protein docking is essential step before applying more costly interface refinement to the correct docking solutions. Here we explore a simple approach to scoring of rigid-body docking poses, which has been implemented in a program called pyDock. The scheme is based on Coulombic electrostatics with distance dependent dielectric constant, and implicit desolvation energy with atomic solvation parameters previously adjusted for rigid-body protein-protein docking. This scoring function is not highly dependent on specific geometry of the docking poses and therefore can be used in rigid-body docking sets generated by a variety of methods. We have tested the procedure in a large benchmark set of 80 unbound docking cases. The method is able to detect a near-native solution from 12,000 docking poses and place it within the 100 lowest-energy docking solutions in 56% of the cases, in a completely unrestricted manner and without any other additional information. More specifically, a near-native solution will lie within the top 20 solutions in 37% of the cases. The simplicity of the approach allows for a better understanding of the physical principles behind protein-protein association, and provides a fast tool for the evaluation of large sets of rigid-body docking poses in search of the near-native orientation.
