ABSTRACT

Investigating the roots of health and illness has inspired unprecedented growth in research on trauma and adversity across academic and scientific disciplines. Can this science achieve its potential? How? Much of this research remains siloed and fragmented, limiting integrative approaches to translating science into a unified paradigm. From age-old traditions to the health, social, and basic sciences, this established and rapidly growing body of work has overwhelmingly found that experiences, both positive and negative, profoundly influence life course health. Such convergence across disciplines highlights the complex, intersectional nature and impact of experiences and reveals consilience: agreement of findings across diverse fields. This narrative review explored 400 sources to curate a representative sample of 98 tracing the evolution of trauma theory and practice from the 19th century to the present. It emphasizes research from 1970 to 2022, with a specific focus on adverse childhood experiences, everyday discrimination, sexual and gender minority stress, acculturative stress, and positive childhood experiences. This research reveals how experiences are a cause, catalyst, and key ingredient of health or of illness, disability, and disparities. The review also proposes steps toward a unified paradigm and showcases innovative integrated models and applications. These examples provide a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding and lead to more effective solutions. Recognition of consilience can connect multidimensional insights on trauma, resilience, and equity to spark further cross-sector innovations toward health, prevention, and justice. Realizing the promise of consilience will require a new era of radical intentionality, ongoing dialogue, and interdisciplinary collaboration to achieve necessary system transformation.

ABSTRACT

Literature on the delivery and impact of foster parent training, such as the Nurturing Parenting Program (NPP), is sparse, particularly for relative foster parents. This study investigates (a) how NPP referral, initiation, and completion rates vary between relative and non-relative foster parents, (b) reasons for not initiating NPP, and (c) changes in parenting attitudes and behaviors for relative and non-relative foster parents after participating in NPP. The study analyzed data from the Illinois Birth to Three (IB3) study for 722 relative and 397 non-relative foster parents of children ages three and younger. Relative and non-relative foster parents had similar NPP referral and initiation rates, but relatives had significantly lower completion rates. Content analysis of case notes for 498 cases showed that relative foster parents more frequently noted barriers (e.g., childcare, transportation) to NPP initiation. Among NPP completers, both groups reported similar levels of improvements in parenting attitudes and behaviors at the end of NPP, but a pattern of lower scores was observed for relative foster parents. The findings suggest a need for more support for foster parents, particularly relative foster parents.

ABSTRACT

Supervised balance training shows immediate benefit for older adults at fall risk. The long-term effectiveness of such training can be enhanced by implementing a safe and simple home exercise program (HEP). We investigated the effects of a12-week unsupervised HEP following supervised clinic-based balance training on functional mobility, balance, fall risk, and gait. Six older adults with an elevated fall risk obtained an HEP and comprised the HEP group (HEPG) and five older adults who were not given an HEP comprised the no HEP group (NoHEPG). The HEP consisted of three static balance exercises: feet-together, single-leg stance, and tandem. Each exercise was to be performed twice for 30-60 s, once per day, 3 days per week for 12 weeks. Participants were educated on proper form, safety, and progression of exercises. Pre- and post-HEP testing included Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Timed Up and Go, Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) assessments, Activities-Balance Confidence, Late-Life Functional Disability Instrument and instrumented assessments of balance and gait (Limits of Stability, modified Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction on Balance, Gait). A healthy control group (HCG; n = 11) was also tested. For most of the measures, the HEPG improved to the level of HCG. Though task-specific improvements like BBS and SPPB components were seen, the results did not carry over to more dynamic assessments. Results provide proof of concept that a simple HEP can be independently implemented and effective for sustaining and/or improving balance in older adults at elevated fall-risk after they have undergone a clinic-based balance intervention.

ABSTRACT

Ubiquitous Chromatin-opening Elements (UCOEs) are defined by their ability to consistently confer stable, site of integration-independent transgene expression that is proportional to copy number, including from within regions of heterochromatin such as centromeres. UCOEs structurally consist of methylation-free CpG islands encompassing single or dual divergently-transcribed housekeeping gene promoters. Since their discovery in 1999, UCOEs and their sub-fragments have found applications in areas of biotechnology requiring stable, reproducible, and high levels of gene expression. This review recounts the discovery of UCOEs and examines their current and future applications in protein therapeutic biomanufacturing and gene therapy.

ABSTRACT

Wrens of the genus Thryothorus comprise over a third of the species diversity in the family Troglodytidae. In addition to this species diversity, these wrens vary in a number of behavioral characteristics, in particular in the presence and structure of vocal duets, which makes them an interesting target for comparative evolutionary ecological and behavioral study. However, no phylogenetic hypothesis for this group-which would provide a sound basis for comparative analysis-is currently available. While previous molecular phylogenetic work established conclusively that the type of this genus, Thryothorus ludovicianus (Latham), was not part of a monophyletic group with other Thryothorus, the exact limits of the genus could not be established due to limited taxon sampling. Here, we present molecular data from all but four currently recognized species of Thryothorus. These data confirm that Thryothorus is paraphyletic, and that the type T. ludovicianus does not form a monophyletic group with any other member of the genus. Based on analyses of our data, we resurrect two previously recognized wren genera, Pheugopedius and Thryophilus, and erect a new genus-Cantorchilus-to house the remaining ex-Thryothorus species. Our hypothesis of relationships will provide a firm basis for future behavioral and morphological analyses of these species.
