ABSTRACT

Recognition of the importance of irritable mood and outbursts has been increasing over the past several decades. This "Future Directions" aims to develop a set of recommendations for future research emphasizing that irritable mood and outbursts "hang together," but have important distinctions and thus also need to "hang separately." Outbursts that are the outcome of irritable mood may be quite different from outbursts that are the trigger or driving force that make youth and his/her environment miserable. What, then, is the relation between irritable mood and outbursts? As the field currently stands, we not only cannot answer this question, but we may also lack the tools to effectively do so. Here, we will propose recommendations for understanding the phenomenology of irritable mood and outbursts so that more directed and clinically useful assessment tools can be designed. We discuss the transdiagnostic and treatment implications that relate to improvements in measurement. We describe the need to do more than repurpose our current assessment tools, specifically interviews and rating scales, which were designed for different purposes. The future directions of the study and treatment of irritable mood and outbursts will require, among others, using universally accepted nomenclature, supporting the development of tools to measure the characteristics of each irritable mood and outbursts, understanding the effects of question order, informant, development and longitudinal course, and studying the ways in which outbursts and irritable mood respond to treatment.

ABSTRACT

There is, in the content of the Journal, an embarrassment of riches, and picking a "best" seems to demand a certain qualification: is the "best" the most interesting, most surprising, most educational, most important, most provocative, most enjoyable? How to choose? We are hardly unbiased and can admit to a special affection for the ones that we and the authors worked hardest on, modifying version after version into shape. Acknowledging these biases, here are the 2023 articles that we think deserve your attention or at least a second read.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: Cystoid macular degeneration (CMD) is a feature of chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR). Present study intended to analyze the clinical presentation, risk factors, choroidal features, and outcome of CMD in CSCR. Methods: This was a retrospective, record-based descriptive study, which included chronic CSCR eyes with CMD. Demographic profile and clinical history were obtained from medical records. Spectralis spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SDOCT; Heidelberg Engineering,Germany) was used for acquiring SDOCT images and for performing fluorescein angiography , indocyanine green angiography , and optical coherence tomography (OCT) angiography. Results: The study included 101 eyes of 69 consecutive patients of CSCR having CMD. The mean age of patients was 56 ± 9.4 years (range 40-79 years), and majority (63, 91.3%) of the patients were male. Prior history of corticosteroid use was present in seven (10.1%) patients. Mean time interval between the first diagnosis of CSCR and appearance of CMD was 55.3 ± 33.9 months. CMD was located away from the fovea in majority of eyes (68, 67.3%). Mean subfoveal choroidal thickness was 396.71 ± 90.5 µm. Subretinal pigment epithelium choroidal neovascularization was noted in four (3.96%) eyes. Conclusion: CMD appears as a late complication of CSCR and is usually present away from the fovea. Such eyes had thickened choroid and fewer cases had associated choroidal neovascularization. Further comparative studies would be needed to validate these findings.

ABSTRACT

Food packaging reinforced with Zn-doped TiO2 nanoparticles with enhanced prerequisite film-forming and biodegradable traits was prepared to augment fresh food storage. Pure and tailored metal (Zinc, Copper, and Selenium) doped TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized and analyzed through multiple characterization techniques (optical spectra, XRD patterns (X-Ray Diffraction), Dynamic Light Scattering, and Scanning Electron Microscopy). The synthesized nanoparticles were tested for their Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations, antimicrobial potential against common lethal food pathogens, and cytotoxicity. Compared to Cu- and Se-doped nanoparticles, Zn-doped TiO2 nanoparticles displayed the most potent antimicrobial activity with insignificant cytotoxicity and were incorporated into the food packaging materials. The developed nano-reinforced food packaging efficaciously augmented the freshness of plums (Oemleria cerasiformis) for 16 days (42 ± 2 °C). The physicomechanical characterization of the nano-reinforced packaging establishes its utility in food packaging applications. The developed biodegradable packaging undergoes complete decomposition within 12 days of storage in natural soil.

Key Clinical Message: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and tuberculoma are two distinct medical conditions. Nonetheless, they can be related in very rare cases. The purpose of this case report is to consider screening tests such as IGRA (interferon gamma release assay) and TST (tuberculin skin test), for tuberculosis in CKD patients with a risk of infection, thereby increasing the awareness of tuberculoma in CKD and ensuring early treatment which would eventually decrease the morbidity and mortality rates in such patients. Abstract: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) associated with tuberculoma represents one of the rarest conditions occurring worldwide. Among tuberculous patients, only 1% show central nervous system involvement. We present a case of a 45-year-old male with CKD who presented with a seizure and was diagnosed to have tuberculoma.

ABSTRACT

Involuntary movement disorders include tremors, tics, myoclonus, athetosis, chorea, dystonia, and dyskinesia. Neuroleptic drugs have the propensity to cause extrapyramidal side effects. Lithium-induced coarse tremors are well documented and may occur at therapeutic serum concentrations (0.8-1.0 mEq/L) in the treatment of bipolar disorder. Treatment for coarse tremors due to lithium includes either dose reduction or non-selective beta-blockers. To our knowledge, there are only four case reports regarding the lithium-induced awakening of cell memory of involuntary movement disorders worldwide. In scientific literature, only two drugs have the propensity to reawaken past cell memory. These intriguing findings can have a wider application across fields such as past-life regression therapy, post-traumatic stress disorder, catharsis, or recall of sub-aural temporal high-frequency burst-erased memory-type of mind-altering techniques. We report a case of lithium-induced awakening of the cell memory of involuntary dyskinesia in a female who took treatment for bipolar disorder in the past.

ABSTRACT

Doping is a great strategy for tuning the characteristics of graphene-based nanomaterials. Phosphorous has a higher electronegativity as compared to carbon, whereas boron can induce p-type conductivity in graphene. This review provides insight into the different synthesis routes of phosphorous- and boron-doped graphene along with their applications in supercapacitors, lithium- ions batteries, and cells such as solar and fuel cells. The two major approaches for the synthesis, viz. direct and post-treatment methods, are discussed in detail. The former synthetic strategies include ball milling and chemical vapor discharge approaches, whereas self-assembly, thermal annealing, arc-discharge, wet chemical, and electrochemical erosion are representative post-treatment methods. The latter techniques keep the original graphene structure via more surface doping than substitutional doping. As a result, it is possible to preserve the features of the graphene while offering a straightforward handling technique that is more stable and controllable than direct techniques. This review also explains the latest progress in the prospective uses of graphene doped with phosphorous and boron for electronic devices, i.e., fuel and solar cells, supercapacitors, and batteries. Their novel energy-related applications will continue to be a promising area of study.

Background: Acute pancreatitis (AP) is the main reason for mortality and morbidity. Numerous studies have shown a link between chronic alcohol usage and AP. However, there are few studies on the percentage of patients developing AP as a result of dependent patterns of drinking and associated risk factors. Aim: This study aimed to study the prevalence and impact of risk factors of alcohol dependence syndrome with AP patients hospitalized in tertiary care facilities. Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional observational study. Sociodemographic and clinical data were taken from patients with AP after consent. Eighty-five patients with AP who met the inclusion criteria were involved after each participant had clinical evaluation using the modified Marshall score, the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test, and the Severity of Alcohol Dependence Questionnaire (SAD-Q). The outcomes were tabulated and analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software. Results: 38.8% of patients with AP were found to have features of alcohol dependence syndrome. Higher values of mean corpuscular volume (MCV), serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT), serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT), Gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), and uric acid were associated with a greater propensity to have AP. The severity of alcohol dependence syndrome and AP was not associated. Conclusion: AP is potentially a fatal disease. In this study, 38.8% of AP patients had alcohol dependence syndrome. There was no statistical association between the severity of AP and alcohol dependence syndrome, though high values of MCV, SGOT, SGPT, and GGT were at greater risk of developing AP. As a result, alcohol dependence syndrome should be examined in all individuals with AP.

In 2020, we wrote to you of our dedication and vision for this Journal "to be antiracist at every level," outlining the following 6 initiatives "to reshape the Journal to pursue this vision:" (1) Issuing a Call for Papers on racism and its impacts on child development and children's mental health; (2) updating our Guide for Authors to emphasize that we will evaluate articles submitted to the Journal on whether their study designs are inclusive and their discussions consider and address human diversity and structural determinants of health in the context of their research questions and hypotheses; (3) assembling a special collection of Journal articles on bias, bigotry, discrimination, racism, and mental health inequities; (4) accelerating our efforts to make our Editorial Board inclusive and representative of our community of scientists and practitioners as well as the communities we serve; (5) engaging in continuing education and dialogue as an Editorial Board that will include antiracism training and praxis; and (6) critically examining "our editorial and peer review process to ensure it is antiracist."1 In this Editors' Note, we write to update you on our progress, including a new initiative we started in the past year: (7) a new option for authors to add a statement to their manuscripts regarding the inclusion and diversity initiatives and practices they employed in pursuing their work. With the launch this year of JAACAP Open, the Academy's new open access publication and the newest member of the JAACAP family of journals, we have expanded opportunities to pursue these efforts, and look forward to sharing more about JAACAP Open in future updates.

RESEARCH CONDUCTED: Rheum emodi is a perennial herb that grows at high altitudes (1800-4400m) and possesses many medicinal properties. Due to over-exploitation, the plant has become endangered in its natural habitat. The present research focuses on the effect of stress tolerance endophytic bacteria on the growth of Rheum emodi grown at lower altitudes (748ft) under salt and heavy metal stress. METHODS: Endophytic bacteria Pelomonas Aquatica AIS1S and Solibacillus silvestris DL3R2 were isolated from Abutilon indicum and Hermocallis fulva and were identified by 16s rRNA sequence. The seeds were inoculated with the bacteria and sown in sterile soil with low carbon, potassium, and phosphorous content. The growth of the plants was regularly monitored for three months. The phytochemicals of the experimental plant were compared with the in-situ plants taken as control. RESULTS: The results have shown that seeds inoculated with Pelomonas Aquatica AIS1S and Solibacillus silvestris DL3R2 have higher germination than control. The maximum number of seeds germinated is 2.33±0.47 at 2% salt concentration on inoculation with Pelomonas Aquatica AIS1S. The least number of seeds germinated is 0.33±0.47 at 6% cadmium concentration on inoculation with Pelomonas Aquatica A1S1S. HPLC analysis has shown that the 0.41%and 0.16% of quercetin and gallic were produced at higher altitudes which is less than a plant grown at a lower altitude, i.e., 0.47% 0.18%, respectively. Emodin, physcoin, and rhein are the other compounds found at 254nm. CONCLUSION: This study provides a basis that plants can be grown under stress conditions with the help of stress-tolerant endophytic bacteria, thus providing a new strategy for the conservation of plants.

ABSTRACT

To address the issues with the current nomenclature of psychotropic agents, which may be misleading or confusing, the Neuroscience-based Nomenclature (NbN) started being developed in 2009. It was introduced as one approach to the classification of pharmacological treatments based on a medication's putative psychopharmacological mechanisms of action derived from preclinical and clinical studies. In 2018, the NbN-Child & Adolescent (NbN C&A) was released. Since then, the NbN C&A has been refined, and its website and app (https://nbnca.com/) have been implemented. JAACAP encourages its authors and readers to consider utilizing the NbN C&A and to keep abreast of its developments over time. This is in line with the core missions of the Journal: to contribute to the translation and implementation of the most up-to-date science into real-world clinical practice. DIVERSITY & INCLUSION STATEMENT: One or more of the authors of this paper self-identifies as a member of one or more historically underrepresented racial and/or ethnic groups in science.

ABSTRACT

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 12 (SCA12) is a neurodegenerative genetic disorder triggered by abnormal CAG repeat expansion at locus 5q32. MRI recognises dissimilarities in affected areas of SCA12 patients and healthy subjects. But manual diagnosis is time-consuming and prone to subjective errors. This has motivated us in developing a systematic and authentic decision model for computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) of SCA12. Four different feature extraction techniques are examined in this research work, such as First Order Statistics, GLRLM, GLCM, and GLGCM, to obtain distinguishable characteristics for differentiating SCA12 patients from healthy subjects. The model's performance is measured using sensitivity, specificity, accuracy and F1-score with leave-one-out cross-validation scheme. Our experimental results show that features based on the GLRLM can distinguish SCA12 from healthy subjects with a maximum classification accuracy of 85% among all the different function extraction techniques used.

In this study, we investigated the impact of harvest maturity stages and contrasting growing climates on secondary metabolites in Kinnow mandarin. Fruit samples were harvested at six harvest maturity stages (M1−M6) from two distinct growing locations falling under subtropical−arid (STA) and subtropical−humid (STH) climates. A high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) technique was employed to identify and quantify secondary metabolites in the fruit juice. A total of 31 polyphenolics and 4 limonoids, with significant differences (p < 0.05) in their concentration, were determined. With advancing maturity, phenolic acids and antioxidant activity were found to increase, whereas flavonoids and limonoids decreased in concentration. There was a transient increase in the concentration of some polyphenolics such as hesperidin, naringin, narirutin, naringenin, neoeriocitrin, rutin, nobiletin and tangeretin, and limonoid aglycones such as limonin and nomilin at mid-maturity stage (M3) which coincided with prevailing low temperature and frost events at growing locations. A higher concentration of limonin and polyphenolics was observed for fruit grown under STH climates in comparison to those grown under STA climates. The data indicate that fruit metabolism during advanced stages of maturation under distinct climatic conditions is fundamental to the flavor, nutrition and processing quality of Kinnow mandarin. This information can help in understanding the optimum maturity stage and preferable climate to source fruits with maximum functional compounds, less bitterness and high consumer acceptability.

ABSTRACT

Although children living in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) account for 90% of the global population of children, depression, and anxiety among children in LMICs have been understudied. This study examines the prevalence of depression and anxiety and their associations with biological and psychosocial factors among children across China, with a focus on rural areas. We conducted a large-scale epidemiological study of depression and anxiety among 53,421 elementary and junior high school-aged children across China. The results show that 20% are at risk for depression, 6% are at risk for generalized anxiety, and 68% are at risk for at least one type of anxiety. Girls and junior high school students show a higher risk for both depression and anxiety symptoms, while socioeconomic status has varying associations to depression and anxiety symptoms. Our results also show consistent correlations between depression and anxiety symptoms and standard math test scores. These findings underscore the importance of identification, prevention, and treatment of youth depression and anxiety in underdeveloped areas. As China constitutes 15% of the global population of children under age 18, this study offers valuable information to the field of global mental health.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has had, and continues to have, a significant effect on individuals worldwide, and it is clear that minority communities including the Sikh community have been particularly affected by the virus. The current study assessed the impact of the pandemic in a sample of 44 British Sikhs across 11 virtual focus groups. Three main themes emerged including making meaningful connections, struggling to adjust and the organisation of gurdware (Sikh places of worship) in coping with the COVID-19 pandemic. Findings highlight that faith may promote collective action for collective healing especially during mass trauma, with specific insight into what this may entail for the Sikh community.

ABSTRACT

In the present work, effect of different fuels on the structural, morphological, magnetic, adsorptive and photocatalytic properties of ferric oxide nanoparticles (Fe2O3 NPs) was evaluated. Fe2O3 NPs were synthesized via combustion method by using oxalyl dihydrazide (ODH), polyethylene glycol (PEG) and urea as fuels. The indigenously synthesized NPs were characterized by different analytical tools. XRD patterns confirmed the presence of α- and γ-Fe2O3 phases. TEM micrographs displayed average particle size was less than 30 nm. Saturation magnetization amplified with increase in the γ-Fe2O3 content, which was correlated to the fuel used for synthesis. Adsorptive and photocatalytic activity of synthesized NPs was studied using malachite green (MG) dye as a model compound. The uptake behavior for MG dye was influenced by the solution pH, contact time, adsorbent dose, temperature and dye concentration. Thermodynamic studies indicated the endothermic nature of the adsorption phenomenon. The adsorption was well defined with Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms in comparison to Dubinin-Radushkevitch adsorption isotherm model. The trend for percentage removal of MG dye using NPs synthesized by different fuels was: urea > PEG > ODH. Fe2O3 NPs facilitated photo degradation of dye solution in ultra-violet and visible light irradiations.

ABSTRACT

Background: Perinatal mental health is important for the well-being of the mother and child, so the relatively high prevalence of perinatal mental health problems in developing settings poses a pressing concern. However, most studies in these settings focus on the demographic factors associated with mental health problems, with very few examing social factors. Hence, this study examines the prevalence of the depressive, anxiety and stress symptoms among pregnant women and new mothers in rural China, and the associations between these mental health problems and social factors, including decision-making power, family conflicts, and social support. Methods: Cross-sectional data were collected from 1,027 women in their second trimester of pregnancy to 6 months postpartum in four low-income rural counties in Sichuan Province, China. Women were surveyed on symptoms of mental health problems using the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21) and social risk factors. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine social risk factors associated with maternal mental health problems, with results reported as odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results: Among all respondents, 13% showed symptoms of depression, 18% showed symptoms of anxiety, 9% showed symptoms of stress, and 23% showed symptoms of any mental health problem. Decision-making power was negatively associated with showing symptoms of depression (OR = 0.71, CI: 0.60-0.83, p < 0.001) and stress (OR = 0.76, CI: 0.63-0.90, p = 0.002). Family conflict was positively associated with depression (OR = 1.53, CI: 1.30-1.81, p < 0.001), anxiety (OR = 1.34, CI: 1.15-1.56, p < 0.001), and stress (OR = 1.68, CI: 1.41-2.00, p < 0.001). In addition, social support was negatively associated with depression (OR = 0.56, CI: 0.46-0.69, p < 0.001), anxiety (OR = 0.76, CI: 0.63-0.91, p = 0.002), and stress (OR = 0.66, CI: 0.53-0.84, p < 0.001). Subgroup analyses revealed that more social risk factors were associated with symptoms of anxiety and stress among new mothers compared to pregnant women. Conclusion: Perinatal mental health problems are relatively prevalent among rural women in China and are strongly associated with social risk factors. Policies and programs should therefore promote individual coping methods, as well as target family and community members to improve the social conditions contributing to mental health problems among rural women.
