ABSTRACT

We aimed to develop a prediction model for intensive care unit (ICU) hospitalization of Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) patients using artificial neural networks (ANN). We assessed 25 laboratory parameters at first from 248 consecutive adult COVID-19 patients for database creation, training, and development of ANN models. We developed a new alpha-index to assess association of each parameter with outcome. We used 166 records for training of computational simulations (training), 41 for documentation of computational simulations (validation), and 41 for reliability check of computational simulations (testing). The first five laboratory indices ranked by importance were Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, Lactate Dehydrogenase, Fibrinogen, Albumin, and D-Dimers. The best ANN based on these indices achieved accuracy 95.97%, precision 90.63%, sensitivity 93.55%. and F1-score 92.06%, verified in the validation cohort. Our preliminary findings reveal for the first time an ANN to predict ICU hospitalization accurately and early, using only 5 easily accessible laboratory indices.

ABSTRACT

Traditional seismic design has a limitation in that its performance is reduced by significant permanent deformation after plastic behavior under an external load. The recentering characteristics of smart materials are considered to be a means to supplement the limitations of conventional seismic design. In general, the recentering characteristics of smart materials are determined by their physical properties, whereas polyurethane springs can regulate the recentering characteristics by controlling the precompression strain. Therefore, in this study, 160 polyurethane spring specimens were fabricated with compressive stiffness, specimen size, and precompression strain as design variables. The compression behavior and precompression behavior were studied by performing cyclic loading tests on a polyurethane spring. The maximum stress and maximum strain of the polyurethane spring showed a linear relationship. Precompression and recentering forces have an almost perfect linear relationship, and the optimal level of precompression at which residual strain does not occur was derived through regression analysis. Additionally, a prediction model for predicting recentering force based on the linear relationship between precompression and recentering force was presented.

ABSTRACT

Corrosion creates a significant degradation mechanism in reinforced concrete (RC) structures, which would require a high cost of maintenance and repair in affected buildings. However, as the cost of repairing corrosion-damaged structures is high, it is therefore pertinent to develop alternative eco-friendly and sustainable methods. In this study, structural retrofitting of corroded reinforced concrete beams was performed using bamboo fiber laminate. Three reinforced normal weight concrete beams were produced, two of which were exposed to laboratory simulated corrosion medium, and the remaining one sample served as control. Upon completion of the corrosion cycle, one of the two corroded beams was retrofitted externally with a prefabricated bamboo fiber laminate by bonding the laminate to the beam surface with the aid of an epoxy resin. The three beams were subjected to loading on a four-point ultimate testing machine, and the loads with corresponding deflections were recorded through the entire load cycle of the beams. Finally, the mass loss of embedded steel reinforcements was determined to measure the effect of corrosion on the beams and the steel. The result showed that corroded beams strengthened with bamboo laminates increase the bearing capacity. Using a single bamboo laminate in the tensile region of the corroded beam increased the ultimate load capacity of the beam up to 21.1% than the corroded beam without retrofit. It was demonstrated in this study that the use of bamboo fiber polymer for strengthening destressed RC beams is a more sustainable approach than the conventional synthetic fibers.

ABSTRACT

Nonlinear dynamic analyses of reinforced concrete (RC) frame buildings require the use of effective stiffness of members to capture the effect of cracked section stiffness. In the design codes and practices, the effective stiffness of RC sections is given as an empirical fraction of the gross stiffness. However, a more precise estimation of the effective stiffness is important as it affects the distribution of forces and various demands and response parameters in nonlinear dynamic analyses. In this study, an evolutionary computation method called gene expression programming (GEP) was used to predict the effective stiffness ratios of RC columns. Constitutive relationships were obtained by correlating the effective stiffness ratio with the four mechanical and geometrical parameters. The model was developed using a database of 226 samples of nonlinear dynamic analysis results collected from another study by the author. Subsequent parametric and sensitivity analyses were performed and the trends of the results were confirmed. The results indicate that the GEP model provides precise estimations of the effective stiffness ratios of the RC frames.

ABSTRACT

A new type of composite voided slab, the TUBEDECK (TD), which utilizes the structural function of profiled steel decks, has recently been proposed. Previous studies have confirmed that the flexural strength of TD slabs can be calculated based on the full composite contribution of the steel deck, but for long-span flexural members, the deflection serviceability requirement is often dominant. Herein, we derived a novel deflection prediction approach using the results of flexural tests on slab specimens, focusing on TD slabs. First, deflection prediction based on modifications of the current code was proposed. Results revealed that TD slabs exhibited smaller long-term deflections and at least 10% longer maximum span lengths than solid slabs, indicating their greater efficiency. Second, a novel rational method was derived for predicting deflections without computing the effective moment of inertia. The ultimate deflections predicted by the proposed method correlated closely with the deflection under maximum bending moments. To calculate immediate deflections, variation functions for the concrete strain at the extreme compression fiber and neutral axis depth were assumed with predictions in good agreement with experiments. The proposed procedure has important implications in highlighting a new perspective on the deflection prediction of reinforced concrete and composite flexural members.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this phenomenological research study carried out in Iran was to capture the meaning of patients' rights from the lived experiences of patients and their companions. To achieve this, 12 semistructured interviews were conducted during 2005 in a teaching hospital in Tehran with patients and/or their companions. In addition, extensive field notes were compiled during the interviews. The data were analyzed using Benner's thematic analysis. The themes captured were classified into three main categories, with certain themes identified within each category. The categories were: (1) the concept of patients' rights; (2) barriers to patients' rights; and (3) facilitators of patients' rights. The distinctive themes within each of the categories were identified as: (1a) receiving real care, (1b) focus on the patient, and (1c) equality and accessibility; (2a) dissatisfaction with caregivers, and (2b) specific work environment limitations; (3a) the patient's companion, (3b) a responsible system, and (3c) the public's awareness of rights. Although certain themes identified closely resemble those identified in international patients' bills of rights, the current study focused on themes that are particularly relevant to the Iranian sociocultural context.
