ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The alterations of lymphocyte subpopulations assessment after surgery in choroidal melanoma patients compared to cataract patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 12 patients with malignant melanoma of the choroid, 10 patients subjected to surgery due to cataract. Methods--flow cytometric measurement of absolute lymphocyte count, the number of all T cells (CD3+), T helper lymphocytes (CD3+ CD4+), T cytotoxic lymphocytes (CD3+CD8+), B lymphocytes (CD19+), NK cells (CD3-CD16+) and T cells (CD3+) cells with gammasigma TCR, on the day of surgery and two days after it. RESULTS: Comparable numbers of cells were observed in both groups prior to surgery, but the behavior of some populations differed: CD3+, CD3+CD4+ cells increased in melanoma patients whereas they decreased in reference group, the number of T lymphocytes with gammasigma TCR was significantly higher in melanoma patients before surgery and it did not differ after it. CONCLUSIONS: Though there were no significant differences in lymphocyte subpopulations between melanoma patients and the reference group, it seems that the presence of tumour influences the reactivity of the immune system to the trauma (surgery).

ABSTRACT

Prophylactic retinal photocoagulation (in order to prevent the retinal detachment) was performed in the Ophthalmological Department of Medical School in Poznan in the period 1980-1984 and 1987-1988 in 114 eyes, in the Ophthalmological Department in Halle in the period 1982-1983 in 160 eyes. Qualified for coagulation were following changes: holes in the upper quadrants, tears, lattice-like degeneration and vitreoretinal adhesions in the fellow-eye, in high myopia, in aphakia, in cases with subjective symptoms (flashes) or in cases with suspected family history (familial incidence of retinal detachment). In our material the percentage of retinal detachment in the fellow-eye amounted 3.5 p.c. In the Poznan Department in spite of performed prophylactic intervention retinal detachment occurred in 3 eyes, in Halle in 7.

ABSTRACT

A bilateral cyst of the vitreous was diagnosed in a woman-patient, aged 61 with high myopia. The cyst was probably of degenerative etiology. Because of a very rare incidence of vitreous cysts which is connected with diagnostic difficulties the authors present this case in detail.

ABSTRACT

Presented are the results of treatment of diabetic changes at the posterior pole by argon laser. Among 26 eyes in which the "macular grid" technique was used an improvement or stabilization of vision was attained in 14 eyes, 12 remaining eyes showing deterioration. The anatomical condition improved or it was stabilized in 24 eyes. Focused laser therapy after fluoresceine angiography was used in 15 eyes; improvement or stabilization of the visual acuity was achieved in 12 eyes, deterioration was observed in 3 eyes. The anatomical condition improved or was stabilized in all the 15 eyes. The period of observation amounted 6 months.

ABSTRACT

In the period 1978-1987 20 eyes were operated for retinal detachment with a hole in the posterior pole. Various surgical methods were applied with a preponderance of the extrascleral surgery in 1978-1985. In cases of existence of a hole at the posterior pole reattachment of the retina was achieved in 63.7%. Instead in cases of a hole at the posterior pole and at the periphery the reattachment of the retina was observed in 55.6%. In the years 1985-1987 after application of endotamponade with a gas and a laser photocoagulation the percentage of a cure increased (3 cases--3 reattachments).
