ABSTRACT

The treatment of a landfill leachate was developed at the pilot scale using a combination of processes, including coagulation, hydrolysis acidification (HA)-sequence batch reactors (SBR) and electro-Fenton oxidation in series. The aim was to enhance the removal of pollutants in the landfill leachate, which contained high organic and NH3-N loadings. During the 156-day in situ operation, the average removal efficiency of the chemical oxygen demand (COD) was 97.8% and the lowest effluent COD was 78 mg/L. The removal efficiencies of colour, turbidity and total phosphorus were all higher than 97%. The overall operating cost was US$ 4.84/m3. This combined process showed a high potential to efficiently remediate landfill leachate at an acceptable expense.

ABSTRACT

Radioresistance is an important obstacle to nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) therapy. In this study, we explored the role of RNA-binding motif protein 3 (RBM3) in the radioresistance of NPC and its underlying mechanism. We measured the expression of RBM3 in 20 clinical NPC tissues and in NPC cell lines. We found that RBM3 was upregulated in radioresistant NPC tissues and cells. Radioresistant NPC cells (CNE1/IR) and parental NPC cells (CNE1) were subjected to RBM3-shRNA knockdown and RBM3 overexpression, respectively. RBM3 depletion in CNE1/IR cells sensitized cells to radiotherapy, increased DNA damage, and accelerated the rate of apoptosis. In contrast, RBM3 overexpression in CNE1 cells significantly enhanced radioresistance and reduced the rate of apoptosis. Additionally, radioresistance conferred by RBM3 was attributed to the activation of the AKT/Bcl-2 signaling pathway and reduction of caspase 3. Inhibition of AKT signaling attenuated RBM3-mediated radioresistance. Furthermore, RBM3 directly interacted with PI3K subunit p85 in NPC cell lines. Altogether, our data demonstrate that RBM3 enhances radioresistance by inhibiting the apoptotic response to radiotherapy through the PI3K/AKT/Bcl-2 signaling pathway. RBM3 may serve as a novel factor for predicting radioresistance and as a molecular target in the treatment of NPC.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of the Shanghai Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP). METHODS: A randomized controlled trial with six-month follow-up compared patients who received treatment with those who did not receive treatment (waiting-list controls) in five urban communities in Shanghai, China. Participants in the treatment group received education from a lay-led CDSMP course and one copy of a help book immediately; those in the control group received the same education and book six months later. FINDINGS: In total, 954 volunteer patients with a medical record that confirmed a diagnosis of hypertension, heart disease, chronic lung disease, arthritis, stroke, or diabetes who lived in communities were assigned randomly to treatment (n = 526) and control (n = 428) groups. Overall, 430 (81.7%) and 349 (81.5%) patients in the treatment and control groups completed the six-month study. Patients who received treatment had significant improvements in weekly minutes of aerobic exercise, practice of cognitive symptom management, self-efficacy to manage own symptoms, and self-efficacy to manage own disease in general compared with controls. They also had significant improvements in eight indices of health status and, on average, fewer hospitalizations. CONCLUSION: When implemented in Shanghai, the CDSMP was acceptable culturally to Chinese patients. The programme improved participants' health behaviour, self-efficacy, and health status and reduced the number of hospitalizations six months after the course. The locally based delivery model was integrated into the routine of community government organizations and community health services. Chinese lay leaders taught the CDSMP courses as successfully as professionals.
