ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Thrombocytopenia 2, an autosomal dominant inherited disease characterized by moderate thrombocytopenia, predisposition to myeloid malignancies and normal platelet size and function, can be caused by 5'-untranslated region (UTR) point mutations in ankyrin repeat domain containing 26 (ANKRD26). Runt related transcription factor 1 (RUNX1) and friend leukemia integration 1 (FLI1) have been identified as negative regulators of ANKRD26. However, the positive regulators of ANKRD26 are still unknown. AIM: To prove the positive regulatory effect of GATA binding protein 2 (GATA2) on ANKRD26 transcription. METHODS: Human induced pluripotent stem cells derived from bone marrow (hiPSC-BM) and urothelium (hiPSC-U) were used to examine the ANKRD26 expression pattern in the early stage of differentiation. Then, transcriptome sequencing of these iPSCs and three public transcription factor (TF) databases (Cistrome DB, animal TFDB and ENCODE) were used to identify potential TF candidates for ANKRD26. Furthermore, overexpression and dual-luciferase reporter experiments were used to verify the regulatory effect of the candidate TFs on ANKRD26. Moreover, using the GENT2 platform, we analyzed the relationship between ANKRD26 expression and overall survival in cancer patients. RESULTS: In hiPSC-BMs and hiPSC-Us, we found that the transcription levels of ANKRD26 varied in the absence of RUNX1 and FLI1. We sequenced hiPSC-BM and hiPSC-U and identified 68 candidate TFs for ANKRD26. Together with three public TF databases, we found that GATA2 was the only candidate gene that could positively regulate ANKRD26. Using dual-luciferase reporter experiments, we showed that GATA2 directly binds to the 5'-UTR of ANKRD26 and promotes its transcription. There are two identified binding sites of GATA2 that are located 2 kb upstream of the TSS of ANKRD26. In addition, we discovered that high ANKRD26 expression is always related to a more favorable prognosis in breast and lung cancer patients. CONCLUSION: We first discovered that the transcription factor GATA2 plays a positive role in ANKRD26 transcription and identified its precise binding sites at the promoter region, and we revealed the importance of ANKRD26 in many tissue-derived cancers.

ABSTRACT

Folded lenses offer advantages in terms of lightness and thinness, but they have limitations when it comes to correcting aberrations. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to address this issue by incorporating metasurfaces in the design of folded optical systems. Specifically, a folded refractive-metasurface hybrid annular aperture folded lens (AFL) is introduced. The structural characteristics of the AFL imaging system are analyzed to investigate the blocking ratio, thickness, and light collection capability of the ring aperture system. Additionally, a hybrid optical integration design using Zemax software is proposed for the metasurfaces. A quadruple-folded AFL working in the mid-infrared waveband is then designed. The superstructure surface is analyzed, and its processability is discussed. The results demonstrate that the reflective-metasurface hybrid AFL significantly improves the imaging quality of this type of optical system while meeting the required design accuracy.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The evidence of breast-conserving therapy (BCT) applied in centrally located breast cancer (CLBC) is absent. This study aims to investigate the long-term survival of breast-conserving therapy (BCT) in centrally located breast cancer (CLBC) compared with mastectomy in CLBC and BCT in non-CLBC. METHODS: Two hundred ten thousand four hundred nine women with unilateral T1-2 breast cancer undergoing BCT or mastectomy were identified from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database. Kaplan-Meier survival curves were assessed via log-rank test. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to balance baseline features, and the multivariable Cox model was used to estimate the adjusted hazard ratio [HR] and its 95% confidence interval [CI] for breast cancer-specific survival (BCSS) and overall survival (OS). RESULTS: With a median follow-up of 91 months, the BCSS and OS rates in patients who received BCT were greater than those patients treated with mastectomy in the entire CLBC set. Multivariable Cox analyses showed that CLBC patients who received BCT had better BCSS (HR = 0.67, 95%CI: 0.55-0.80, p < 0.001) and OS (HR = 0.78, 95%CI: 0.68-0.90, p = 0.001) than patients who received a mastectomy, but there were no significant differences of BCSS (HR = 0.65, 95%CI: 0.47-0.90, p = 0.009) and OS (HR = 0.82, 95%CI: 0.65-1.04, p = 0.110) after PSM. In patients treated with BCT, CLBC patients had a similar BCSS (HR = 0.99, 95%CI: 0.87-1.12, p = 0.850) but a worse OS (HR = 1.09, 95%CI: 1.01-1.18, p = 0.040) compared to that of the non-CLBC patient, but there was no significant difference both BCSS (HR = 1.05, 95%CI: 0.88-1.24, p = 0.614) and OS (HR = 1.08, 95%CI: 0.97-1.20, p = 0.168) after PSM. CONCLUSION: Our findings revealed that BCT should be an acceptable and preferable alternative to mastectomy for well-selected patients with CLBC.

ABSTRACT

We proposed a digital-optical co-design that can effectively improve the image quality of refractive-diffractive hybrid imaging systems over a wide ambient temperature range. Diffraction theory was used to establish the degradation model and blind deconvolution image recovery algorithm was used to perform recovery for simulated images. The peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and structural similarity (SSIM) were used to evaluate the algorithm performance. A cooled athermalization dual-band infrared optical system with a double-layer diffractive optical element (DLDOE) was designed, and the results show an overall improvement for both PSNR and SSIM overall the whole ambient temperature range. This demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed method for the image quality improvement of hybrid optical systems.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Many studies have found that engaging in activities, including physical exercise, social interaction, and cognitive training, is beneficial for preventing cognitive decline among older adults; however, the demographic differences in the association between activity engagement and cognitive functions remain understudied. This study investigates: (a) the influence of activity engagement on cognitive functions among Chinese older adults, and (b) the moderating roles of age and gender in these associations . METHODS: The data were derived from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study in 2018, which included 9803 participants aged 60 or older. A multiple regression model was used to test the study hypotheses. RESULTS: Engaging in physical activity (b = 1.578, p < .001), social interaction (b = 1.199, p < .001), and cognitive activity (b = 1.468, p < .001) was positively associated with cognitive functions, whereas the effect of volunteer activities on cognitive functions was not significant (b = -.167, p = .390). Light- and moderate-intensity activities were beneficial for cognition (light: b = .847, p < .001; moderate: b = 1.189, p < .001), but vigorous-intensity activity was negatively related to cognition (b = -.767, p < .001). In addition, women and participants with advanced age appeared to benefit more from cognitive activities than their male and younger counterparts, respectively (gender: b = 1.217, p = .002; age: b = .086, p = .004). The adverse effects of vigorous-intensity activities (including agricultural work) on cognitive health were stronger for women and younger participants (gender: b = -1.472, p < .001; age: b = .115, p < .001). The protective effects of moderate-intensity activities on people's cognition increased with increasing age (b = .055, p = .012). CONCLUSIONS: The findings indicate that participating in physical, social, and cognitive activities can help older adults to maintain cognitive health. They suggest that older adults should select activities while considering activity intensity and their individual characteristics.

BACKGROUND: We sought to find new biomarkers for abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) caused by chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH). METHODS: The AAA mice model was created using Ang II. The mice were divided into normoxic and CIH groups. The structure of AAA was observed using abdominal ultrasonography, Elastica van Gieson (EVG), and hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining. The expression of ɑ-SMA was investigated using immunohistochemistry. The novel biomarkers were screened using bioinformatics analysis. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was employed to verify the expression of novel genes in both normal oxygen and CIH. RESULTS: CIH appears to cause greater aortic dilation, higher AAA incidence, lower survival rate, thicker vessel wall, and more brittle elastic lamellae when compared to controls. The immunohistochemistry results showed that the expression of ɑ-SMA in the CIH group was reduced significantly. Four novel genes, including Homer2, Robo2, Ehf, and Asic1, were found to be differentially expressed between normal oxygen and CIH using qRT-PCR, indicating the same trend as bioinformatics analysis. CONCLUSIONS: We discovered that CIH could hasten the occurrence and progression of AAA. Four genes (Homer2, Robo2, Ehf, and Asic1) may be novel biomarkers for AAA, which could aid in the search for new therapies for patients with AAA caused by CIH.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the mediating role of social capital in the association between perceived physical neighborhood environment and loneliness among older adults in urban China. METHOD: Data were derived from face-to-face interviews with people (n = 472) aged 60 or older in urban communities of Shanghai, China, in 2020. Loneliness was measured by the 6-item De Jong Gierveld Scale. A multiple mediator model was adopted to examine the research hypotheses. RESULTS: Cognitive social capital played a full mediation role in the association between perceived community health care (ß = -.061, p < .05), safety (ß = -.168, p < .001), recreational services (ß = -.058, p < .05), and loneliness. Structural social capital was associated with loneliness (ß = -.102, p < .05), whereas its mediator effect was not significant. Perceived transportation convenience had neither a direct nor an indirect effect on loneliness among older adults. CONCLUSION: Findings indicate that older adults' perceptions of healthcare services, safety, and recreational resources could help alleviate their loneliness via fostering cognitive social capital. Interventions improving older adults' perceptions of community health care, safety, and recreation, and their social capital level could help reduce the prevalence of loneliness.

ABSTRACT

Studies have documented the inconsistent influences of activity participation on health. However, the underlying mechanisms connecting activity patterns to loneliness are relatively understudied. Using data on 8,545 respondents aged 60 or older from the 2014 China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey, we used latent class analysis to identify the patterns of participating in eight activities and path analysis to examine the mediating effects of formal support, informal support, and aging attitudes in the relationship of activity patterns and loneliness. Three meaningful patterns of activity (high activity, low activity, and working caregivers) were identified. Working caregivers and low activity groups, compared to high activity, showed higher levels of loneliness in later life. Informal support, rather than formal support, and attitudes toward aging mediated the relationship between activity patterns and loneliness in later life. This study highlights the importance of fuller engagement in diverse political, economic, and community activities to prevent loneliness. Additionally, intervention programs that facilitate joint support from family, community, and government and shape scientific understanding of aging are critical for alleviating loneliness in later life.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: Hospitalization for acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) is considered as severe exacerbations. Readmission for severe exacerbations is a crucial event for COPD patients. However, factors associated with readmission for severe exacerbations are incomplete. The study aimed to investigate different characteristics between the severe and non-severe exacerbation groups. Patients and Methods: Patients hospitalized for severe AECOPD were included in multi-centers, and their exacerbations in next 12 months after discharge were recorded. According to exacerbations, patients were separated into the severe-exacerbation group and the non-severe exacerbation group. Propensity-score matching (PSM) and multivariable analyses were performed to compare the baseline characteristics of two groups. The Hosmer-Lemeshow test and receiver operating characteristic curve were applied to evaluate how well the model could identify clusters. Results: The cohort included 550 patients with severe AECOPD across 27 study centers in China, and 465 patients were finally analyzed. A total of 41.5% of patients underwent readmission for AECOPD within 1 year. There were no significant differences in baseline characteristics between groups after PSM. Severe exacerbations in the 12 months were related to some factors, eg, the duration of COPD (13 vs 8 years, P<0.001), the COPD Assessment Test (CAT) score (20 vs 17, P<0.001), the blood eosinophil percentage (1.5 vs 2.0, P<0.05), and their inhaler therapies. Patients readmitted with AECOPD had a longer time of diagnosis (≥9 years), more symptoms (CAT ≥10), and lower blood eosinophils (Eos <2%). A clinical model was derived to help identify patients at risk of readmission with severe exacerbations. Conclusion: These analyses confirmed the relevance of COPD at admission with future severe exacerbations. A lower blood eosinophils percentage appears to be related to readmission when combined with clinical history. Further studies are needed to evaluate whether this study can predict the risk of exacerbations.

ABSTRACT

Metastatic triple-negative breast cancer (mTNBC) is a heterogeneous disease with a poor prognosis. Individualized survival prediction tool is useful for this population. We constructed the predicted nomograms for breast cancer-specific survival (BCSS) and overall survival (OS) using the data identified from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database. The Concordance index (C-index), the area under the time-dependent receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and the calibration curves were used for the discrimination and calibration of the nomograms in the training and validation cohorts, respectively. 1962 mTNBC patients with a median follow-up was 13 months (interquartile range, 6-22 months), 1639 (83.54%) cases died of any cause, and 1469 (74.87%) died of breast cancer. Nine and ten independent prognostic factors for BCSS and OS were identified and integrated to construct the nomograms, respectively. The C-indexes of the nomogram for BCSS and OS were 0.694 (95% CI 0.676-0.712) and 0.699 (95% CI 0.679-0.715) in the training cohort, and 0.699 (95% CI 0.686-0.712) and 0.697 (95% CI 0.679-0.715) in the validation cohort, respectively. The AUC values of the nomograms to predict 1-, 2-, and 3-year BCSS and OS indicated good specificity and sensitivity in internal and external validation. The calibration curves showed a favorable consistency between the actual and the predicted survival in the training and validation cohorts. These nomograms based on clinicopathological factors and treatment could reliably predict the survival of mTNBC patient. This may be a useful tool for individualized healthcare decision-making.

ABSTRACT

The special dispersion and temperature characteristics of diffractive optical element (DOE) make them widely used in optical systems that require both athermalization and achromatic aberrations designs. The multi-layer DOE (MLDOE) can improve the diffraction efficiency of the overall broad waveband, but its diffraction efficiency decreases with changes in ambient temperature. When the ambient temperature changes, the micro-structure heights of MLDOE and the refractive index of the substrate materials change, ultimately affecting its diffraction efficiency, and, further, the optical transform function (OTF). In this paper, the influence of ambient temperature on the diffraction efficiency of MLDOE in a dual-infrared waveband is proposed and discussed, the diffraction efficiency of MLDOE caused by ambient temperature is derived, and a computational imaging method that combines optical design and image restoration is proposed. Finally, a dual-infrared waveband infrared optical system with athermalization and achromatic aberrations corrected based on computational imaging method is designed. Results show that this method can effectively reduce the diffraction efficiency of MLDOE by ambient temperature and improve the imaging quality of hybrid optical systems.

Obstructive sleep apnea can worsen the prognosis of subarachnoid hemorrhage. However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we established a mouse model of subarachnoid hemorrhage using the endovascular perforation method and exposed the mice to intermittent hypoxia for 8 hours daily for 2 consecutive days to simulate sleep apnea. We found that sleep apnea aggravated brain edema, increased hippocampal neuron apoptosis, and worsened neurological function in this mouse model of subarachnoid hemorrhage. Then, we established an in vitro HT-22 cell model of hemin-induced subarachnoid hemorrhage/intermittent hypoxia and found that the cells died, and lactate dehydrogenase release increased, after 48 hours. We further investigated the underlying mechanism and found that sleep apnea increased the expression of hippocampal neuroinflammatory factors interleukin-1ß, interleukin-18, interleukin-6, nuclear factor κB, pyroptosis-related protein caspase-1, pro-caspase-1, and NLRP3, promoted the proliferation of astrocytes, and increased the expression of hypoxia-inducible factor 1α and apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a CARD, which are the key proteins in the hypoxia-inducible factor 1α/apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a CARD signaling pathway. We also found that knockdown of hypoxia-inducible factor 1α expression in vitro greatly reduced the damage to HY22 cells. These findings suggest that sleep apnea aggravates early brain injury after subarachnoid hemorrhage by aggravating neuroinflammation and pyroptosis, at least in part through the hypoxia-inducible factor 1α/apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a CARD signaling pathway.

An increasing number of studies have focused on the relationship between neighbourhood environment and depressive symptoms among older people. However, the underlying mechanisms are still unclear. This study examined the association between neighbourhood environment and depressive symptoms among older urban Chinese adults and the mediator role of social capital in this association. Using a quota sampling approach, 472 respondents aged 60 years or older were recruited from 23 urban communities of Shanghai, China, in 2020. Depressive symptoms were measured with the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. Social capital was measured by two latent constructs: cognitive social capital (e.g., trust, reciprocity, belongingness) and structural social capital (e.g., memberships, social participation). Perceived physical neighbourhood environment was assessed in terms of health care, security, and public transportation status. Structural equation modelling was conducted to test the study hypotheses. Health care services in the community had a direct effect on depressive symptoms (ß = -0.097, p < .05). Cognitive social capital played a mediator role in the relationship between physical neighbourhood environment and depressive symptoms (community health care: ß = -0.124, p < .01; community security: ß = -0.284, p < .01). The mediator effect of structural social capital in the relationship between physical neighbourhood environment and depressive symptoms was not significant. The findings highlight the role of physical neighbourhood environment in fostering community-based social capital and promoting mental health among older adults in urban China. Policy strategies could focus on improving community health care and security to promote mental health.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is highly prevalent in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). However, the effects of OSA on AAA initiation in a murine model of sleep apnea have not been completely studied. In this paper, Apoe-/- C57BL/6 mice infused with angiotensin II (Ang II) were placed in chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) condition for inducing OSA-related AAA. CIH significantly promoted the incidence of AAA and inhibited the survival of mice. By performing ultrasonography and elastic Van Gieson staining, CIH was found to be effective in promoting aortic dilation and elastin degradation. Immunohistochemical and zymography results show that CIH upregulated the expression and activity of MMP2 and MMP9 and upregulated MCP1 expression while downregulating α-SMA expression. Also, CIH exposure promoted ROS generation, apoptosis, and mitochondria damage in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs), which were measured by ROS assay, TUNEL staining, and transmission electron microscopy. The result of RNA sequencing of mouse aortas displayed that 232 mRNAs were differently expressed between Ang II and Ang II+CIH groups, and CaMKII-dependent p38/Jnk was confirmed as one downstream signaling of CIH. CaMKII-IN-1, an inhibitor of CaMKII, eliminated the effects of CIH on the loss of primary VSMCs. To conclude, a mouse model of OSA-related AAA, which contains the phenotypes of both AAA and OSA, was established in this study. We suggested CIH as a risk factor of AAA initiation through CaMKII-dependent MAPK signaling.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Omentectomy has been traditionally a part of standard radical gastrectomy. Its clinical benefit for locally advanced gastric cancer (LAGC) remains controversial. This study aimed at evaluating the impact of gastrectomy with omentum preservation (GOP) on survival, recurrence, surgical outcomes and postoperative complications by comparing with gastrectomy with omentum resection (GOR). METHODS: Original studies comparing GOP with GOR in LAGC were searched. Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.4. RESULTS: Seven studies involving 1879 patients were analyzed. Compared with GOR, GOP achieved significantly better overall survival (HR = 0.75 [0.60, 0.95], P = 0.01), with similar relapse-free survival (HR = 0.84 [0.68, 1.03], P = 0.10). The two groups had similar total recurrence rate (OR = 0.86 [0.68, 1.08], P = 0.19) and no significant differences in rates of peritoneal, hematogenous, locoregional or distant lymph node recurrences. GOP had significantly less blood loss (MD = -83 [-139, -28] ml, P = 0.003) and tended to have shorter operation time (MD = -28 [-58, 2] min, P = 0.06), with similar harvested number of lymph nodes (MD = -0.4 [-2.6, 1.8], P = 0.70). The incidences of total all grade and major complications were similar in GOP and GOR (all grade: 31.8% vs. 30.3%, OR = 1.08 [0.79, 1.46], P = 0.64; major: 9.2% vs. 10.1%, OR = 1.14 [0.55, 2.34], P = 0.73). There were no significant differences in incidences of complication or postoperative mortality. CONCLUSIONS: Omentum preservation did not affect curability or survival in LAGC. These findings require validation in randomized controlled trials with large sample sizes.

ABSTRACT

Myocardial cell injury caused by myocardial ischemia and reperfusion is one of the main causes of the occurrence and development of heart disease. Recent study has shown that inducing mitophagy of cardiomyocytes is a crucial method to alleviate ischemia-reperfusion injury. While, Polo-like kinase 1 (PLK1) can induce the mitophagy of breast cancer cells. Moreover, PLK1 was able to promote the expression of p-AMPK and FUNDC1, which are the protective factors for myocardium. Therefore, the mouse model of ischemia/reperfusion was established and the effect of PLK1 on ischemia reperfusion induced myocardial damage was investigated. The PLK1 was overexpressed in H9c2 cells and rat model of ischemia/reperfusion. Ischemia reperfusion inhibited the expression of PLK1. While overexpression of PLK1 relieved the myocardial infarction and myocardium apoptosis through inducing mitophagy in rats model of ischemia reperfusion. In vitro, the H9c2 cells overexpressing the PLK1 were treated with the hypoxia and reoxygenation and the apoptosis, survival rate and expression of mitophagy-related proteins of H9c2 cells were detected using the flow cytometry, CCK-8 assay and western blotting. The results reveled that overexpression of PLK1 alleviated the hypoxia and reoxygenation induced apoptosis of H9c2 cells and promoted the expression of mitophagy-related proteins. In addition, enhanced PLK1 expression promoted the expression of p-AMPK and FUNDC1 in H9c2 cells. However, the inhibition of FUNDC1 abolished the positive effect of PLK1 on H9c2 cells mentioned above. In conclusion, PLK1 alleviated the ischemia reperfusion induced myocardial damage by inducing the mitophagy in a p-AMPK/FUNDC1 signaling dependent pathway.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The incidence of adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction (AEG) is increasing worldwide. Laparoscopic transhiatal approach (LTH) has gained growing popularity in the treatment of AEG. However, its safety and efficacy need to be evaluated. METHODS: Original studies comparing LTH with open transhiatal approach (OTH) were searched. Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.3. RESULTS: Nine studies involving 2149 patients were eligible. Compared with OTH, LTH was associated with longer operation time (mean difference [MD] = 31min, 95%CI [20,41], P < 0.001) while less blood loss (MD = -103ml [-135, -72], P < 0.001), and harvested similar number of lymph nodes (MD = 0.1 [-1.2, 1.4], P = 0.89). There were no differences in time to ambulation (MD = -0.79 days [-1.77, 0.20], P = 0.12) or time to first flatus (MD = -0.82 days [-1.76, 0.11], P = 0.08); however, LTH was associated with shorter postoperative hospital stay (MD = -1.70 days [-2.34, -1.05], P < 0.001). The mortality after surgery was comparable for LTH and OTH (risk difference [RD] = -0.00 [-0.01, 0.01], P = 0.55). The incidence of total major complications was similar in LTH (6.1%) and OTH (8.4%) (RD = -0.02 [-0.05, 0.01], P = 0.12); there were no significant differences in the incidence of each complication. Furthermore, LTH achieved similar 2-year overall survival (OS) rate (risk ratio [RR] = 1.17 [0.86, 1.60], P = 0.31) while higher 5-year OS rate (RR = 1.43 [1.18, 1.73], P = 0.0003) and significant improvement of OS (univariable hazard ratio = 0.65 [0.50, 0.84], P = 0.0009; multivariable hazard ratio = 0.59 [0.44, 0.80], P = 0.0006). CONCLUSIONS: LTH is feasible and safe for AEG, and may provide more favorable short-term outcomes and potential long-term survival benefit, which needs to be confirmed by randomized trials.

BACKGROUND: According to the theory of compensating differentials, caregivers with high levels of intrinsic motivation should exhibit a higher-than-average satisfaction with their pay. Whereas studies conducted in Western countries have provided empirical evidence for the theory of compensating differentials in various care settings, few studies have been conducted in China that focus on caregivers employed in residential homes for the elderly (RHE). The sociodemographic characteristics of caregivers in China different significantly from their counterparts in Western countries. PURPOSE: This study was developed to analyze the mediating role of job burnout to assess the influence of intrinsic motivation on pay satisfaction among caregivers in RHE. METHODS: Structural equation modeling was used to examine the influences of intrinsic motivation on pay satisfaction in a sample of 1,212 caregivers employed in RHE in China by analyzing the mediating role of job burnout. RESULTS: Intrinsic motivation was found to relate positively to pay satisfaction (ß = .11, p < .05). Negative relationships were identified between intrinsic motivation and job burnout (ß = -.46, p < .01) and between job burnout and pay satisfaction (ß = -.13, p < .01). Job burnout was found to have a significant mediating effect on the relationship between intrinsic motivation and pay satisfaction (ß = .06, p < .01). CONCLUSIONS/IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: A significant relationship was found between intrinsic motivation and pay satisfaction, with job burnout playing a mediating role in caregivers employed in RHE in China. This research has profound implications for nursing education, practice, and research. First, greater efforts should be focused on instilling nursing values in nursing students to foster intrinsic motivation. Second, nonpecuniary rewards may be offered to caregivers to acknowledge the values of care work and strengthen intrinsic motivation. Third, a supportive working climate should be fostered to reduce job burnout. Fourth, caregivers should be informed of their rights to decent pay and their right to bargain collectively through unions. Fifth, appropriate public policies should be implemented to provide pay for caregivers at levels that recognize and appreciate their intrinsic motivation.

ABSTRACT

We present a compressive image quality evaluation for a hybrid optical system containing a multilayer diffractive optical element (MLDOE). We take effects from both incident angle and waveband into consideration to improve the diffraction efficiency of the MLDOE. With this MLDOE design, it can ensure accurate image quality evaluation for hybrid optical systems. The results show that this design enables a diffraction-efficiency-improved MLDOE, and further ensures accurate image quality of the modulation transfer function and better optical system structure of the hybrid surveillance lens. The results are of great significance for the optimal design of hybrid imaging optical systems.
