ABSTRACT

The natural history of mimiviruses (i.e., viruses that are members of the Mimivirus genus) is a challenge for modern biology. A new domain of life to include these organisms has been proposed from analysis of gene conservation. We analyzed the evolutionary relationship of proteins involved in the translation system, and our data show that mimiviruses are a sister group of Eukarya. New data about the origins of Eukarya, in which Eukarya appears as a branch derived from the Archaea domain, were discussed, and we suggest that the mimiviruses emerged from the initial population that gave origin to Eukarya and that, in this way are not part of a new domain of life.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Recurrent urinary tract infections are common in spinal-cord-injured patients. Our study was designed to evaluate the association of bacteria colony counts, white blood cell (WBC) count, and antibody-coated bacteria analyzed in urethral and prostatic samples in hospitalized spinal-cord-injured patients with recurrent urinary tract infections. METHODS: Thirty-three patients were studied and 4 noninfected patients served as controls; 17 patients were paraplegic and 20 were quadriplegic. Mean patient age was 34.8 years and mean follow-up period was ninety-three days. During the surveillance period, 19 of the 33 patients had relapsing infections (same organism), while 14 had reinfections (new organism). A modified Foley catheter was used to seal the bladder neck, so that urethral and prostatic samples could be obtained. RESULTS: Bacteria colony counts and WBC counts did not correlate with relapsing infection. However, significantly more patients with relapsing infection (8/19) had antibody-coated bacteria in their prostatic fluid than patients with reinfection (1/13) (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The presence of antibody-coated bacteria in prostatic fluid is associated with relapsing urinary tract infections and not with reinfection.

ABSTRACT

Within a period of 12 years 466 patients with acute spinal cord injury were admitted to our Centre, seven of these having ankylosing spondylitis (AS). A history of alcohol consumption preceding the accident was present in five patients, and in four there was a history of neurological deterioration before their admission. An epidural hematoma was found in one patient and four expired within 3 months of their injury. The incidence of ankylosing spondylitis in cervical cord injury was 1.5%, and an associated epidural hematoma was present in some 14% of the patients. The mortality rate was 57%. There was a high incidence of alcoholic use before the accident. Neurological deterioration commonly occurred before admission.
