ABSTRACT

The scientific output of prof. Edward Kowalski includes 103 publications in medical journals, 80 symposial reports and 3 books. Some publications are very interesting; for example "Pregnancy complicated by miliary tuberculosis" (1952) and "The abortions and premature labors occuring under the influence of the nervous factors" (1963). The latter was his habilitation dissertation.

ABSTRACT

Purkinje cells of the cerebellum are particularly susceptible to hypoxia. In these cells tetraploidy has been demonstrated. Therefore, a link between the susceptibility of cells of the cerebellum to hypoxia and the amount of DNA seems probable.

ABSTRACT

The role of immune complexes in the etiology and pathogenesis of demyelinating diseases, particularly multiple sclerosis, is discussed in the light of numerous observations. It is inferred that a deeper understanding of the role of immune complexes might provide a basis for preventive measures in multiple sclerosis.

ABSTRACT

Alzheimer disease, Pick disease and senile dementia are all characterized by similar morphological changes, both macroscopic and microscopic, and similar psychiatric symptoms. All three should, therefore, be viewed as aspects of one disease, which is termed Alzheimer-type dementia. Nothing contradicts the view that immune complexes take part in the etiology of Alzheimer-type dementia. There are various types of immune complexes and so their points of action in the organism may vary. There might be two main means of preventing Alzheimer-type dementia: the first could be named the serological (basic) and the second relying on pharmacotherapy (additional). Pharmacological prevention of disease might be aided by the use of parasympathomimetic drugs, e.g. pilocarpine.

ABSTRACT

A case of a self-injury in a 19-year man is presented. The patient stabbed his thorax with a needle (a wire 9 cm long) which penetrated the right lung near the heart. The patient did not agree to the operation. Left cardiac auricle laceration with hemothorax and pericardial tamponade developed within 13 days. The authors suggest immediate surgery despite patient's disagreeing or even rebel in all situations threatening the lives of the prisoners or convicts. Two ++sub-periods might be distinguished in the above mentioned situation: (a) potential, and (b) real life-threat. Surgery should have been performed in the potentially life-threatening ++sub-period in this particular patient.

ABSTRACT

We present a case of chronic cadmium intoxication caused by a gold dental prosthesis. The first symptoms of the disease appeared 2 years after insertion and gradually intensified over the next 3 years. Analysis of blood and urine samples, as well as parts of the prosthesis, revealed an excessive concentration of cadmium. The prosthesis was removed and the concentration of cadmium gradually returned to normal, with an amelioration of symptoms. This case illustrates the importance of investigating the possibility of intoxication with a heavy metal when symptoms of chronic illness accompany the presence of a prosthesis.

ABSTRACT

As a result of the intensive corrosion processes, a remarkable decrease of oxygen concentration in a river barge occurred. Out of four healthy men who entered the barge accomodation, three were suffocated from oxygen want; the fourth one was rescued. Such accidents must be prevented through providing workers with a proper measurement-control and personal safety equipment.
