ABSTRACT

Traffic-related emissions include gas and particles that can alter air quality and affect human and environmental health. Limited studies have demonstrated that particulate debris thrown off from brakes are toxic to higher plants. The acute phytotoxicity of brake pad wear debris (BPWD) investigated using cress seeds grown in soil contaminated with increasing concentrations of debris. Two types of pads were used: a commercially available phenol based pad and an innovative cement-based pad developed within of the LIFE+ COBRA project. The results suggested that even through the BPWD generated by the two pads were similar in and morphology, debris from traditional pads were more phytotoxic than that from cementitious pads, causing significant alterations in terms of root elongation and loss of plasma membrane integrity.

ABSTRACT

A malignant rhabdoid tumor was first described as a subtype of Wilms tumor in 1978. The most frequent location of these tumors is the kidney, and they are common in childhood. The extrarenal localization of these tumors has been described mainly in the central nervous system (called atypical teratoid-rhabdoid tumors), liver, soft tissues and colon. Localization in the small intestine is uncommon and since the 1990s, only a few cases of malignant rhabdoid tumors in the small intestine have been reported. This tumor is very aggressive and the prognosis is poor. We herein present our personal experience with a rhabdoid tumor of the jejunum in a 76-year-old male, and also provide an analysis of the cases of malignant rhabdoid tumor of the small intestine previously described in the literature as for a brief review. We also compared the previous reports and our present case to try to identify prognostic factors.

ABSTRACT

Small bowel metastases from renal cell carcinoma (RCC) are very rare. Clinical presentation includes obstruction, bleeding, intussusception and rarely perforation. We report a case of a 48-year-old female presenting a jejunal intussusception due to intestinal metastasis from RCC. To our knowledge, there are only a few such cases reported in the literature (seven cases). However, if considered in the total summary of reported cases with small bowel metastases from RCC, intussusception is a probable cause.

ABSTRACT

Alterations in the mechanisms of apoptosis are responsible not only for the progression of breast cancer, but for different responses to treatment as well. Among the genes regulators of apoptosis, the tumor suppressor gene p53 and the bcl-2 gene have raised interest for their possible role as predictors of response to therapy and markers of prognosis. The purpose of our study was to prospectively analyze the prognostic value of the expression of p53 and bcl-2 genes in a series of 235 consecutive patients operated on for breast cancer at the Department of General Surgery and Surgical Oncology of the University of Siena, Italy.p53 and bcl-2 expression were evaluated by immunohistochemistry, their association with conventional clinicopathological factors was analyzed by univariate analysis and their prognostic impact was evaluated by multivariate analysis.p53 and bcl-2 were detected respectively in 15.7 and 75.7% of cases, and resulted significantly related to presence of estrogen receptors for p53 over-expression and presence of peritumor lymphovascular invasion (LVI) for bcl-2 expression. With a median follow-up of 79 months, an independent negative prognostic impact on disease free and overall survival was observed for presence of LVI, absence of bcl-2 expression and number of involved axillary lymphnodes. The expression of bcl-2 improved the prognosis of LVI positive tumors up to values similar to LVI negative cases, while its absence associated to presence of LVI resulted in a poor outcome with only 28% of patients alive at 8 years. These data may indicate that expression of bcl-2 is a marker of breast cancers with reduced capability of distant colonization, even in presence of LVI, and may be particularly useful in the clinical setting, allowing to identify a subset of patients with an high risk of relapse.
