ABSTRACT

Abstract: Radiomics represents the convergence of artificial intelligence and radiological data analysis, primarily applied in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. In the head and neck region, squamous cell carcinoma is the most prevalent type of tumor. Recent radiomics research has revealed that specific bio-imaging characteristics correlate with various molecular features of Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma (HNSCC), particularly Human Papillomavirus (HPV). These tumors typically present a unique phenotype, often affecting younger patients, and show a favorable response to radiation therapy. This study provides a systematic review of the literature, summarizing the application of radiomics in the head and neck region. It offers a comprehensive analysis of radiomics-based studies on HNSCC, evaluating its potential for tumor evaluation, risk stratification, and outcome prediction in head and neck cancer treatment.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Gelli-Bianco law (Law no. 24/2017) intervenes both in order to divide healthcare liability between the healthcare professional and the facility in which he/she exercises and to incentivize the latter to adopt an organizational model suitable for managing the risk associated with the provision of any healthcare service, including the information for consent. In fact, the healthcare facility must guarantee clear, complete and adequate information on the specific case, which, therefore, cannot consist of standard forms to be signed by the patient, under penalty of a flawed consent to treatment and consequent healthcare liability in the event of an adverse event. The regulation mandates that safety must be guaranteed through proper prevention tools and health care risk management, in con-junction with the most effective use of structural, technological and organizational resources available. It further spells out the obligation of health care professionals to contribute to risk prevention while administering health care procedures. For this reason, the consent information constitutes a source of risk for the responsibility of the healthcare provider and the Facility and it must necessarily be managed. Risk Management is the management tool that can allow the healthcare facility to improve the quality and safety of the services provided, optimizing the risk of adverse events through proper moni-toring of the same. This paper will be published, following a special agreement, on the two journals "Igiene e Sanità Pubblica" and "La Clinica Tera-peutica", in Italian and in English, in order to increase the diffusion to a wider audience.

ABSTRACT

The analysis of the written sources allowed to follow the gradual development of every new technique in the field of rhinoplasty but also to understand the value of this surgery in those ancient times, highlighting a deep connection between traumatologic surgery of the nose and the development of modern "aesthetic and reconstructive" Rhinosurgery. Specifically, we analyzed the techniques described by less known surgeons to emphasize their cultural and surgical value. As a matter of fact, the descriptions offered by these authors clearly show the importance of rhinoplasty as a cardinal and autonomous practice since Antiquity, also clarifying the persistence and development of specific techniques for this surgical practice in the History of medicine. In the manuscript, the contributions of the Italian surgeons, such as Brancas and Vianeos families, are highlighted, demonstrating their influence on the progress of this surgical specialty in the Early Modern Age. Finally, we deepen the description of Gaspare Tagliacozzi's work, pointing out the topics and controversial debates arising from his techniques and innovations in "rhinosurgery" and also in the field of tissue transplantation, laying the foundations of modern Plastic Surgery.Level of Evidence V This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article. ABSTRACT

Among the mummies preserved in the Basilica of San Domenico Maggiore in Naples, there are the bodies of the wife and three children of Jean Antoine Michel Agar, Minister of Finance of Naple's Kingdom during the Monarchy of Joachim Murat (1808-1815). Between 1983 and 1987 paleopathological analyses were performed; in particular, X-ray examination allowed investigation of the health status of the Agar family members and reconstruction of the embalming processes used to preserve the bodies. In addition, an analysis of the historical and archival documents was carried out, to formulate hypotheses about the causes of death, demonstrating how these sources could become important instruments to obtain diagnoses and pathological histories.

ABSTRACT

Antonio Ascenzi is well known within the scientific community for his original contributions to morbid anatomy and in particular for his studies on the fields of bone biology, bone biomechanics, haematology and congenital heart disease. Additionally, Ascenzi was also interested in human evolution and applied his deep knowledge of pathology to ancient human remains, conducting research in paleoanthropology on fossilized Neanderthal specimens found in Italy. The name of Ascenzi is linked with the discovery and study of the most ancient Italian bone fossils, namely the Ceprano skull, an early specimen of Homo erectus. Furthermore, his pioneering researches on the Uan Muhuggiag and Grottarossa mummies and his rigorous studies on several aspects and problems concerning the pathologies of past human populations made him a pioneer in the fields of Italian mummiology and paleopathology. The thread that linked his diversified research interests outside and within human anthropology was a profound passion for the search and discovery of scientific truth.

ABSTRACT

Neo-hippocratism consists in a rational and mechanic method to explain pathological phenomena and discover the causes of diseases. Bernardino Ramazzini uses Hippocratic empirical observation to investigate the relations between the alterations of the air--due to mephitic vapours, of organic and inorganic origin--and the development of pathological processes. His notion of corruption of the atmosphere as the origin of epidemics and specific diseases, and that of prevention as the main strategy of modern medicine, is developed in medical literature and in the Public Medicine projects of the end of the Seventeenth century.

ABSTRACT

This article offers a short review of the history of the Rhinoplasty in Occident from A. Cornelius Celsus to the achievement of this surgical art in the XIXth century, with particular attention to the relations between the empiric practice of the Vianeo's medical-surgeons in Calabria and the academic medicine and surgery of Gaspare Tagliacozzi. In the Museum of History of Medicine of the University of Rome "La Sapienza" reproductions of surgical instruments described by G. Tagliacozzi in the "Curtorum Chirurgia..." are kept.

ABSTRACT

A retrospective study of 64 cases of acute mesenteric ischaemia is reported. The patients have been treated, during the past 12 years, at the Department of Surgery "Flaiani", Ospedale San Camillo de Lellis-Rome. In terms of favourable prognosis, the following factors have shown to be statistically significant: enteric resection carried out, thrombosis of superior mesenteric vein, preoperative normal BUN and WBC count. The diagnostic value of CPK-BB is emphasized as well as the prognostic significance of a prompt surgical treatment.
