ABSTRACT

A relatively new and rapidly expanding technology for the production of viable offspring is in vitro fertilization (IVF) and embryo transfer. The ethical issues surrounding this technology--the status of the embryo, cryopreservation, and the selection of IVF recipients--are explored. These issues and the resulting dilemmas need to be examined by each individual nurse as the unique needs of IVF couples are a challenge to the nursing profession. Many questions arise regarding the role of the nurse in this new dimension of health care.

ABSTRACT

500 cases of acute gonorrhoea in athe male, uncomplicated by clinical manisfestations of intercurrent venereal disease are analysed. Treatment consisted of 150,000 units of crystalline penicillin G in normal saline, given in 3 equal doses at 2-hourly intervals, during the period January-June, 1947, at the Caribbean Medical Centre, Port of Spain, Trinidad, B.W.I. A cure rate of between 92.7 per cent, and 97.1 per cent was found on analysis of 383 cases, 117 cases being omitted from the analysis as they failed to reappear after receiving treatment. 6 tables showing racial incidence, diagnostic pathological findings, follow-up attendances, assessment of rate of cure, age incidence and previous histories of venereal disease infection in the 500 cases are embodied in the report(AU)
