ABSTRACT

Using the Computational Fluid Dynamics technique (CFD), we explored the effects of the atmospheric stability conditions on the dispersion of solid and gas-phase pollutants emitted from an area source located on a flat region. As an application, the dispersion of pollutants emitted from roads located on flat terrains was considered. Toward that end, we set up a model that describes the dispersion of air pollutants in a small region (< 1 km long) near the ground surface (< 250 m high). It consists of a neutrally stratified model modified to account for the atmospheric stability effects by imposing the near-ground stratification through the Monin-Obukhov similarity theory and the k-ε turbulence model adjusted for each atmospheric stability condition. Using this model, we simulated the dispersion of pollutants emitted from the road and plotted the resulting downwind concentrations in terms of dimensionless numbers. Results from our CFD-based model were highly correlated (R2 > 0.95) with the SF6 concentrations measured downwind a line source of this trace gas by the U.S. National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration in 2008 under different conditions of atmospheric stability. Numerical and experimental results showed that, under any of the stability conditions explored, the near-road pollutant concentrations are highly correlated (R2 > 0.87) to the concentrations observed under neutral conditions. When the atmosphere is extremely stable, those concentrations were up to 12 times higher than those observed under neutral conditions. We report the constant of proportionality obtained for every stability condition.

ABSTRACT

Candida infection is an important cause of morbidity and mortality on immunosuppressed patients. This growing trend has been associated with resistance to the antimicrobial therapy and the ability of microorganism to form biofilms. TTO oil is used as antimicrobial which shows antibiofilm activity against Candida species. However, it presents problems due to its poor solubility and high volatility. The present study aimed to evaluate in vitro antibiofilm activity of TTO nanoparticles against many Candida species. It was performed the characterization of the oil and nanoparticles. The levels of exopolysaccharides, proteins, and the biomass of biofilms were measured. The chromatographic profile demonstrated that the TTO oil is in accordance with ISO 4730 with major constituents of 41.9% Terpinen-4-ol, 20.1% of γ-Terpinene, 9,8% of α-Terpinene, and 6,0% of 1,8-Cineole. The TTO nanoparticles showed pH of 6.3, mean diameter of 158.2 ± 2 nm, polydispersion index of 0.213 ± 0.017, and zeta potential of -8.69 ± 0.80 mV. The addition of TTO and its nanoparticles represented a significant reduction of biofilm formed by all Candida species, as well as a reduction of proteins and exopolysaccharides levels. It was possible to visualize the reduction of biofilm in presence of TTO nanoparticles by Calcofluor White method.

ABSTRACT

Poly (L-latic acid) (PLLA) is a bioresorbable polymer widely used as a biomaterial, but its fragility can limit its use. An alternative is to produce polymer nanocomposites, which can enhance the mechanical properties of polymeric matrix, resulting in a material with differentiated properties. In this work, PLLA based nanocomposites containing 0.25, 0.5 and 1.0wt% of purified multiwalled carbon nanotubes (p-MWCNTs) were prepared by the solvent casting method. The morphology and mechanical properties results show an improvement in strain at break for 0.25 and 0.5wt% p-MWCNTs and an increase in stiffness and elastic modulus for all compositions. Nanocomposites presented a p-MWCNTs agglomeration; however, there was a good stress transfer between PLLA and p-MWCNTs, which was confirmed by the increase in the hardness and elastic modulus. Atomic force microscopy analysis indicated an increase in roughness after nanotube addition. The in vitro biological study showed that PLLA/p-MWCNTs nanocomposites are cytocompatible with osteoblasts cells. The capacity of PLLA nanocomposites to stimulate osteogenesis was investigated by alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity assay. Higher ALP activity was found on osteoblasts cultured on nanocomposites with 0.25 and 0.5wt% p-MWCNT compared to neat PLLA, confirming that PLLA cytocompatibility was improved on these compositions. Finally, our results showed that by a simple and inexpensive solvent casting method, it is possible to manufacture biofunctional nanocomposites devices with potential for orthopedic applications.

ABSTRACT

In recent years, single dielectric barrier discharge (SDBD) plasma actuators have gained great interest among all the active flow control devices typically employed in aerospace and turbomachinery applications [1,2]. Compared with the macro SDBDs, the micro single dielectric barrier discharge (MSDBD) actuators showed a higher efficiency in conversion of input electrical power to delivered mechanical power [3,4]. This article provides data regarding the performances of a MSDBD plasma actuator [5,6]. The power dissipation values [5] and the experimental and numerical induced velocity fields [6] are provided. The present data support and enrich the research article entitled "Optimization of micro single dielectric barrier discharge plasma actuator models based on experimental velocity and body force fields" by Pescini et al. [6].

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: We investigated whether there was evidence of attempted beta cell regeneration in the pancreas obtained from a patient with recent-onset type 1 diabetes, and if so by what mechanism this occurred. SUBJECTS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: We examined pancreas tissue from a lean 89-year-old patient (BMI 18.0 kg/m(2)) with recent-onset type 1 diabetes who had had a distal pancreatectomy to remove a low-grade pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasia. RESULTS: In the tumour-free tissue, the fractional beta cell area was 0.54+/-0.2% of pancreas area (about one-third of that in non-diabetic humans). CD3-positive T lymphocytes and macrophages had infiltrated the majority of the islets. Subclassification of the T cell population revealed a predominance of CD8-positive cells over CD4-positive cells. Beta cell apoptosis (terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP-biotin nick-end labelling [TUNEL] staining) was greatly increased, consistent with ongoing immune-mediated beta cell destruction. There was also a marked increase (more than approximately 100-fold) in the frequency of beta cell replication (0.69+/-0.15% Ki67-positive beta cells) in all blocks examined. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION: The present report provides direct evidence of attempted beta cell regeneration through the mechanism of beta cell replication in a case of newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes, and affirms that beta cell apoptosis is an important mechanism for beta cell loss in type 1 diabetes.

ABSTRACT

AIM: In this study, we describe our experience in treating subacute thyroiditis patients with 2 OCAs (sodium ipodate and sodium iopanoate). METHODS: We studied 10 consecutive patients with subacute thyroiditis treated with 1 of the 2 oral cholecystography agents (OCAs). RESULTS: Hyperthyroidism was controlled and symptoms improved markedly in each case without any evidence of subsequent relapse of thyroiditis after withdrawal of OCAs. Three of the 10 patients had been treated previously with corticosteroids and had demonstrated relapse of thyroiditis and hyperthyroidism after tapering or withdrawal of steroids. We observed no side effects of treatment with OCAs. CONCLUSION: Our data suggest that OCAs are effective and safe agents for management of hyperthyroidism in patients with subacute thyroiditis, even when they have relapsed after treatment with corticosteroids.

ABSTRACT

Six healthy pony foals, from 2 to 11 days of age, were given a single IM injection of amikacin sulfate (250 mg/ml) at a dosage rate of 7 mg/kg of body weight. Serum amikacin concentrations were measured serially over a 24-hour period. The mean peak serum concentration was 14.7 micrograms/ml at 0.5 hour. The elimination rate constant for amikacin was 0.24/hour, the elimination half-life was 3.0 hours, and the apparent volume of distribution was 0.58 L/kg.
