ABSTRACT

Motivated by the lack of facile routes to alkali-niobium(V) oxyfluorides KNb2O5F and CsNb2O5F, we investigated the reactivity of alkali trifluoroacetates KH(tfa)2 and CsH(tfa)2 (tfa = CF3COO-) toward Nb2O5 in the solid state. Tetragonal tungsten bronze KNb2O5F and pyrochlore CsNb2O5F were obtained by simply reacting the corresponding trifluoroacetate with Nb2O5 at 600 °C under air, without the need for specialized containers or a controlled atmosphere. Thermolysis of KH(tfa)2 in the presence of Nb2O5 yielded single-phase polycrystalline KNb2O5F. By contrast, the reaction between CsH(tfa)2 and Nb2O5 produced a mixture of CsNb2O5F and a new oxyfluoride of formula CsNb3O7F2, whose crystal structure was solved using powder X-ray and electron diffraction. CsNb3O7F2 (space group P6/mmm) belongs to the family of hexagonal tungsten bronzes and features an open-framework structure consisting of corner-sharing Nb(O,F)6 octahedra with hexagonal channels occupied by Cs+ ions. Isomorphous RbNb3O7F2 was obtained upon reacting RbH(tfa)2 with Nb2O5. Synthetic optimization enabled the preparation of RbNb3O7F2 and CsNb3O7F2 as single-phase polycrystalline solids at 500 °C under flowing synthetic air. Both oxyfluorides were found to be semiconductors with a band gap of ≈3.5 eV. The discovery of these two oxyfluorides highlights the importance of probing the reactivity of solids whose full potential as fluorinated precursors is yet to be realized.

ABSTRACT

The discovery of Orsay virus (OrV), the first virus infecting wild populations of Caenorhabditis elegans, has boosted studies of viral immunity pathways in this nematode. Considering the many advantages that C. elegans offers for fundamental research in host-pathogen interactions, this pathosystem has high potential to become a model system for experimental virus evolution studies. However, the evolutionary constraints - i.e, the balance between genetic variation, selection, drift and historical contingency- operating in this pathosystem have barely been explored. Here we describe for the first time an evolution experiment of two different OrV strains in C. elegans. Comparison of the two ancestral strains showed differences in infectivity and sequence, and highlighted the importance of consistently normalize viral inocula for meaningful comparisons among strains. After 10 serial passages of evolution, we report slight changes in infectivity and non-synonymous mutations fixed in the evolved viral populations. In addition, we observed numerous minor variants emerging in the viral population. These minor variants were not randomly distributed along the genome but concentrated in polymorphic genomic regions. Overall, our work established the grounds for future experimental virus evolution studies using Caenorhabditis nematodes.

ABSTRACT

Ferroptosis is a unique form of cell death that was first described in 2012 and plays a significant role in various diseases, including neurodegenerative conditions. It depends on a dysregulation of cellular iron metabolism, which increases free, redox-active, iron that can trigger Fenton reactions, generating hydroxyl radicals that damage cells through oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation. Lipid peroxides, resulting mainly from unsaturated fatty acids, damage cells by disrupting membrane integrity and propagating cell death signals. Moreover, lipid peroxide degradation products can further affect cellular components such as DNA, proteins, and amines. In ischemic stroke, where blood flow to the brain is restricted, there is increased iron absorption, oxidative stress, and compromised blood-brain barrier integrity. Imbalances in iron-transport and -storage proteins increase lipid oxidation and contribute to neuronal damage, thus pointing to the possibility of brain cells, especially neurons, dying from ferroptosis. Here, we review the evidence showing a role of ferroptosis in ischemic stroke, both in recent studies directly assessing this type of cell death, as well as in previous studies showing evidence that can now be revisited with our new knowledge on ferroptosis mechanisms. We also review the efforts made to target ferroptosis in ischemic stroke as a possible treatment to mitigate cellular damage and death.

Objetivo: Revisar las últimas evidencias publicadas respecto a la vacuna utilizada en nuestro país frente al virus del herpes zóster, desglosadas por eficacia, eficiencia, efectividad y seguridad vacunal. Incluir las recomendaciones vacunales actuales. Diseño: Revisión secundaria. Revisión cualitativa descriptiva. Revisión con el término de búsqueda de «vacuna herpes zóster» y «vacuna recombinante adyuvada de subunidades HZ/su». Estudio observacional retrospectivo. Fuentes de datos: Embase, Medline y Google Scholar. Selección de estudios: Criterio de búsqueda con los términos «Shingrix vaccine» y «Adjuvanted Herpes Zoster Subunit Vaccine». Periodo de búsqueda 2013-2023. Se seleccionaron los estudios tipificados como ensayos clínicos o ensayos clínicos randomizados. Se evaluaron 21 estudios publicados. No hubo exclusiones. Resultados: Los estudios evaluados se mostraron coherentes y en todos ellos la eficacia en personas adultas tanto para prevenir la reactivación viral como para evitar complicaciones estuvo por encima del 80%. La efectividad vacunal con 2 dosis también se mostró estar por encima del 80%. Los estudios coste/efectividad fueron siempre favorables en personas adultas, pacientes inmunodeprimidos y personas con enfermedad crónica. La seguridad de la vacuna fue evaluada en los estudios pivotales y en los estudios poscomercialización realizados (aún escasos por el corto periodo de tiempo estudiado). El perfil de seguridad de la vacuna es muy alto, y en el caso de los efectos adversos graves su frecuencia fue similar a placebo. Conclusiones: Disponemos de una vacuna efectiva y segura frente al virus del herpes zóster, que nos permite proteger a los grupos de población más vulnerables frente al virus.(AU)

Introducción: la fibrosis pulmonar idiopática (FPI) es una enfermedad progresiva y cró-nica con muy mal pronóstico. Actualmente, existen dos fármacos para esta patología. El propósito de nuestro estudio es evaluar los efectos del tratamiento en los pacientes de una consulta en vida real.


Introduction: idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic progressive disease with a very poor prognosis. Two drugs are currently available for this disease. The purpo-se of our study is to evaluate the effects of treatment in patients in a real-life practice.

ABSTRACT

Cardiotoxicity due to anthracyclines (CDA) affects cancer patients, but we cannot predict who may suffer from this complication. CDA is a complex trait with a polygenic component that is mainly unidentified. We propose that levels of intermediate molecular phenotypes (IMPs) in the myocardium associated with histopathological damage could explain CDA susceptibility, so variants of genes encoding these IMPs could identify patients susceptible to this complication. Thus, a genetically heterogeneous cohort of mice (n = 165) generated by backcrossing were treated with doxorubicin and docetaxel. We quantified heart fibrosis using an Ariol slide scanner and intramyocardial levels of IMPs using multiplex bead arrays and QPCR. We identified quantitative trait loci linked to IMPs (ipQTLs) and cdaQTLs via linkage analysis. In three cancer patient cohorts, CDA was quantified using echocardiography or Cardiac Magnetic Resonance. CDA behaves as a complex trait in the mouse cohort. IMP levels in the myocardium were associated with CDA. ipQTLs integrated into genetic models with cdaQTLs account for more CDA phenotypic variation than that explained by cda-QTLs alone. Allelic forms of genes encoding IMPs associated with CDA in mice, including AKT1, MAPK14, MAPK8, STAT3, CAS3, and TP53, are genetic determinants of CDA in patients. Two genetic risk scores for pediatric patients (n = 71) and women with breast cancer (n = 420) were generated using machine-learning Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) regression. Thus, IMPs associated with heart damage identify genetic markers of CDA risk, thereby allowing more personalized patient management.

ABSTRACT

Optical genome mapping (OGM) appears as a new tool for matching standard cytogenetic methods (karyotype and microarray) into a single assay. The chromosomal region 11p15.5 harbours two differentially methylated regions, the imprinting centre regions 1 and 2 (ICR1, ICR2). Disturbances in both regions alter human growth and are associated with two imprinting disorders, Beckwith-Wiedemann (BWS) and Silver-Russell syndromes. Herein, we present a prenatal case with a triplication in 11p15.5, including the H19/IGF2 imprinted region, detected by microarray and OGM. A 30-year-old pregnant woman of 17 weeks of gestation was referred for prenatal karyotype and microarray study because of increased nuchal translucency, short femur, megabladder, hyperechogenic bowel, and renal ectasia. Microarray, OGM, and MS-MLPA were performed, and a tandem cis-triplication in 11p15.5 and hypermethylation of the ICR1 region, compatible with BWS was detected. OGM, with its power to detect all classes of structural variants, including copy number variants, at a higher resolution than traditional cytogenetic methods can play a significant role in prenatal care and management as a next-generation cytogenomic tool. This study further supports the hypotheses that the amplification/duplication-triplication of the H19/IGF2 region could be related to BWS if it is of paternal origin.

ABSTRACT

Progress in the design of functional perovskite oxides relies on advances in density functional theory (DFT) methods to efficiently and effectively model complex systems composed of several transition-metal ions. This work reports the application of DFT methods to investigate the electronic structure of the YSr2Cu2FeO8-δ (0 < δ < 1) family in which the insulating, metal, or superconducting behaviors and even anion conductivity can be tuned by modifying the oxygen content. In particular, we assess the performance of the generalized gradient approximation (GGA), its Hubbard-U correction (GGA + U), and the strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) to model the metallic (idealized YSr2Cu2FeO8) and insulating (idealized YSr2Cu2FeO7) phases of the system. The analysis of the DFT results is supported by DC resistivity measurements that denote the metal character of the synthesized YSr2Cu2FeO7.86 and the semiconducting character of YSr2Cu2FeO7.08 prepared under reducing conditions. In addition, the band gap of YSr2Cu2FeO7.08, in the range of 0.73-1.2 eV, has been extracted from diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). While the three methodologies (GGA, GGA + U, SCAN) permit the reproduction of the crystal structures of the synthetized oxides (determined here in the case of YSr2Cu2FeO7.08 by neutron powder diffraction (NPD)), the SCAN emerges as the only one capable to predict the basic electronic and magnetic properties across the YSr2Cu2FeO8-δ (0 < δ < 1) series. The picture that emerges for the metal (δ = 0) to insulating (δ = 1) transition is the one in which oxygen vacancies contribute electrons to the filling of the Cu/Fe-3dx2-y2 states of the conduction band. These results validate the SCAN functional for future DFT investigations of complex functional oxides that combine several transition metals.

A genetically heterogeneous cohort of mice generated by backcrossing (N = 165) was treated with doxorubicin and docetaxel. Cardiac histopathological damage was measured by fibrosis and cardiomyocyte size by an Ariol slide scanner. We determine intramyocardial levels of intermediate molecular phenotypes of CDA associated with histopathological damage and quantitative trait loci (ipQTLs) linked to them. These ipQTLs seem to contribute to the missing heritability of CDA because they improve the heritability explained by QTL directly linked to CDA (cda-QTLs) through genetic models. Genes encoding these molecular subphenotypes were evaluated as genetic markers of CDA in three cancer patient cohorts (N = 517) whose cardiac damage was quantified by echocardiography or Cardiac Magnetic Resonance. Many SNPs associated with CDA were found using genetic models. LASSO multivariate regression identified two risk score models, one for pediatric cancer patients and the other for women with breast cancer. Molecular intermediate phenotypes associated with heart damage can identify genetic markers of CDA risk, thereby allowing a more personalized patient management. A similar strategy could be applied to identify genetic markers of other complex trait diseases.

ABSTRACT

A-site ordered double perovskites with the general formula LnBaCo2O6-δ (where Ln is a lanthanide element) present electrical and electrocatalytic properties that make them attractive as possible ceramic electrode materials for solid oxide cells or alkaline electrolyzers. The properties are highly influenced by the anion vacancy concentration, which is strongly related to the Co-oxidation state, and their location in the structure. Awareness of the stable phases is essential to synthesize, evaluate, and optimize the properties of LnBaCo2O6-δ oxides at operating conditions in different applications. TbBaCo2O6-δ are representative oxides of these layered perovskite systems. The present article reports a study of TbBaCo2O6-δ by electron diffraction, high-resolution electron microscopy, and powder neutron diffraction experiments at different temperatures. The synthesis of TbBaCo2O6-δ in air and slow cooling to room temperature (RT) at 5 °C h-1 leads to samples formed by distinct phases with different oxygen contents and crystal structures. The 122 and 112 phases (with ap × 2ap × 2ap and ap × ap × 2ap unit cells, respectively, with ap being the lattice parameter of the simple cubic perovskite structure) are predominant in quasi-equilibrium prepared samples (cooled at RT at 1 °C h-1) or prepared in Ar flow and quenched to RT. The evolution of the crystal structure of TbBaCo2O6-δ during thermal oxygen release/uptaking consists of modulation from the 122 phase to the 112 phase (or vice versa during uptaking) by creation/occupation of anion vacancies within the TbO1-δ planes. Anion vacancies are not detected in the oxygen crystallographic position different from those located within the TbO1-δ planes even at the highest temperatures, supporting the 2D character of the high anion conduction of the LnBaCo2O6-δ oxides.

ABSTRACT

The update of the preventive activities for this year 2022 in the field of infectious diseases is of special relevance due to the importance that prevention has gained and more specifically, vaccination as a tool to control the pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus declared on March 11, 2020. The pandemic has focused much of the prevention efforts on its containment, but the importance of maintaining high vaccination coverage of the rest of the recommended vaccines to maintain good control of vaccine-preventable diseases and avoid complications in particularly vulnerable patients should not be forgotten. In this year's review we present a practical document with the aim of providing tools to primary care professionals who work with adults, to make the indication of each vaccine whether it is systematically recommended or if it is because the patient belongs to some risk group due to their condition or underlying pathology. In this way, throughout the document, we will comment on the most innovative aspects of systematic vaccination (flu, pneumococcus, meningococcal vaccines and vaccines against the human papillomavirus [HPV]), the new vaccines (pandemic vaccines against COVID-19, vaccines against herpes zoster of subunits, vaccines against monkeypox) and the recommended vaccines according to risk condition (pregnancy and lactation, travelers, patients with immunosuppression or underlying pathology).

Among university students there has been evidence that the COVID-19 pandemic increased their psychological distress, exacerbated by social restrictions. The main objective of this study was to explore the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the prevalence and patterns of cannabis use among university students, in contrast to previous trends since 2012. Data from 10,522 first-year university students (73.3% female, Mage 19 (SD = 1.6)) from eleven Spanish universities collected between 2012 and May 2022 was analysed. Prevalences of cannabis use and their differences by sex were studied, as well as changes in patterns of use and its use for coping during the pandemic. It was found that during lockdown, all prevalence rates of cannabis use decreased in both sexes, showing no statistically significant differences and increasing again in the new normal period in both. Among regular cannabis users, 79.7% reported maintaining or increasing their cannabis use during the pandemic, and of these, half reported using cannabis to cope. Moreover, cannabis use in the usual household increased during the lockdown. These results show that although the overall prevalence of cannabis use was reduced during the lockdown, regular users tended to maintain or increase cannabis use. This could imply two different patterns of use among students, one social and occasional versus the other regular, providing new lines of research for prevention and the implementation of social policies.

BACKGROUND: During adolescence and youth there are relevant changes in the consolidation, gain or loss of consumption habits and lifestyles and the family factors has a fundamental role to development these habits. The study of the consumption of toxins, such as alcohol intake, is crucial at this stage due to the repercussions that said consumption presents in adulthood. Therefore, the objective of our study was to evaluate the associations between alcohol consumption patterns and related family factors (family functioning, family history of alcohol consumption) in Spanish university students. METHODS: Observational, descriptive, cross-sectional, multicenter study, carried out in first-year university students from 11 Spanish universities. Through an online questionnaire, alcohol consumption (risky consumption and intensive consumption or binge drinking), family functioning and history of alcohol in the family were evaluated. Risky alcohol consumption and binge drinking were assessed using the AUDIT test, and family functioning was assessed using the family APGAR questionnaire. A descriptive analysis of the data was performed, as well as the Chi-Square test and Student's T-Test, and non-conditional logistic regression models were carried out to examine this association. RESULTS: The prevalence of risky alcohol consumption identified in the 10,167 respondents was 16.9% (95% CI = 16.2-17.6), and that of BD was 48.8% (95% CI = 47.9-48.8). There is a significant association between risky alcohol consumption and family functioning in students of both sexes, with greater consumption in the face of severe dysfunctional support (men OR = 1.72; p < 0.001 and women OR = 1.74; p < 0.001) and family history of consumption (p = 0.005). Regarding the binge drinking pattern, no statistically significant differences were observed. CONCLUSIONS: Risky alcohol consumption in university students is associated with dysfunctional family support, unlike the binge drinking pattern, where there is no such association. The findings of this study show the importance of creating prevention programs focused on the family approach in university students, which include alcohol screening in the population with a family history of this substance, and greater social support from health services.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the study was to examine the association of alcohol consumption patterns (hazardous alcohol use and binge drinking) and the use of emergency services and primary care consultations in university students. An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted at eleven Spanish universities collaborating within the uniHcos Project. University students completed an online questionnaire that assessed hazardous alcohol use and binge drinking using the AUDIT questionnaire and evaluated the use of emergency services and primary care. A descriptive analysis of the data was performed, as well as the chi-squared test and Student's t-test and nonconditional logistic regression models to examine this association. Results: There were 10,167 participants who completed the questionnaire. The prevalence of hazardous alcohol use was 16.9% (95% CI: 16.2−17.6), while the prevalence of binge drinking was 48.8% (95% CI: 47.9−49.8). There were significant differences in the use of emergency services in those surveyed with hazardous alcohol use (p < 0.001) or binge drinking pattern (p < 0.001). However, no significant differences were observed in terms of attendance during primary care visits in individuals with hazardous alcohol use (p = 0.367) or binge drinking pattern (p = 0.755). The current study shows the association between university students with a pattern of hazardous alcohol use or binge drinking and greater use of emergency services. However, no significant association was observed between the said consumption patterns and the use of primary care services.

ABSTRACT

Complex compositional and displacive modulations of the crystal structure of KLaMnWO6 are imaged with atomic resolution by means of scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). This oxide is stabilized by cation vacancies leading to a La1+x/3K1-xMnWO6 stoichiometry. Compositional modulation on both the K and La layers are revealed in the high-angle annular dark-field STEM (HAADF-STEM) images. The compositional modulation within the La layer is coupled with the modulation of the octahedral tilting, which is exposed by imaging of the anion sublattice in annular bright-field STEM (ABF-STEM) images. These complex modulations are accommodated in a 5√2ap × 5√2ap × 2ap perovskite-type structure.

ABSTRACT

The antiferromagnetic behavior of Fe3+ oxides of composition RE1.2Ba1.2Ca0.6Fe3O8, RE2.2Ba3.2Ca2.6Fe8O21, and REBa2Ca2Fe5O13 (RE = Gd, Tb) is highly influenced by the type of oxygen polyhedron around the Fe3+ cations and their ordering, which is coupled with the layered RE/Ba/Ca arrangement within the perovskite-related structure. Determination of the magnetic structures reveals different magnetic moments associated with Fe3+ spins in the different oxygen polyhedra (octahedron, tetrahedron, and square pyramid). The structural aspects impact on the strength of the Fe-O-Fe superexchange interactions and, therefore, on the Néel temperature (TN) of the compounds. The oxides present an interesting transition from three-dimensional (3D) to two-dimensional (2D) magnetic behavior above TN. The 2D magnetic interactions are stronger within the FeO6 octahedra layers than in the FeO4 tetrahedra layers.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: In college students, higher risk alcohol consumption (drunkenness and binge drinking-BD) has negative consequences on their development and and probably facilitates risk sexual behaviors. The objective was to study if risky sexual behaviors when consuming alcohol (RSBA) are associated with higher risk consumption. METHODS: Cross-sectional multicenter study with UniHcos Project, 1st year university students from 11 universities in Spain, academic years 2011-2012 to 2017-2018 data. This data were collected by self-administered questionnaire. A uni and bivariate analysis was performed, evaluated the statistical significance of the differences in prevalence with chi-square. Mean and standard deviation were used for quantitative variables and Student's t test statistic was used. RESULTS: 9,862 subjects (72.2% women). 90.3% reported having consumed alcohol and 60.9% had drunk the last year, 49% BD in last month. It was deteded in men, significantly higher consumption in the last month and drunkenness. Last month consumption and drunkenness were significantly higher in men and in <21 years. The RSBA were significantly higher among who were drunk (15.7% unprotected sex, 1.9% sexual abuse and 0.7% taking sexual advantage) and had BD (17.1%, 1.9% and 0.7 %). Women with both risk consumptions had more sexual abuse (2.2%), and men had greater behaviors of taking sexual advantage of someone (drunk: 1.2%; BD: 1.3%). CONCLUSIONS: Alcohol consumption was above similar groups. BD consumption was similar by gender and age. Risk sexual behaviors appear mainly in problematic consumption. Gender differences are not detected in alcohol consumers in unprotected sex but deteded in the rest.


OBJETIVO: En universitarios, el consumo de alcohol de mayor riesgo (borracheras y binge drinking (BD), tiene consecuencias negativas sobre su desarrollo y probablemente facilita conductas sexuales de riesgo. El objetivo de este trabajo fue estudiar si las conductas sexuales de riesgo al consumir alcohol (CSRA) se asocian a los consumos de mayor riesgo. METODOS: Estudio multicéntrico transversal con datos del Proyecto uniHcos, de universitarios de 1er año de 11 universidades españolas, entre los cursos 2011-2012 y 2017-2018. Datos recogidos mediante cuestionario autoadministrado. Se realizó un análisis uni y bivariable, evaluando la significación estadística de las diferencias de prevalencia con chi-cuadrado. Se utilizó media y desviación típica para variables cuantitativas y como estadístico de contraste t de Student. RESULTADOS: 9.862 participantes (72,2% mujeres). El 90,3% consumió alcohol y el 60,9% tuvo borracheras en último año; el 49% tuvo BD en el último mes. El consumo en el último mes y las borracheras fueron mayores en hombres y <21 años. Las CSRA fueron superiores entre los que se emborracharon (15,7% sexo sin protección, 1,9% abuso sexual y 0,7% aprovecharse sexualmente) y consumieron en BD (17,1%, 1,9% y 0,7%). Las mujeres con ambos consumos de riesgo presentaron más abusos sexuales (2,2%), y los hombres fueron quienes más se aprovecharon sexualmente de otros (borracheras:1,2%; BD: 1,3%). CONCLUSIONES: El consumo de alcohol está por encima de grupos similares. El BD tiene un patrón similar por género y edad. Las CSRA se asocian a los consumos de mayor riesgo, no detectándose en este grupo diferencias por género en sexo sin protección, sí en otras CSRA.
