ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Skin tumours represent about 11% of all the malignant neoplasms and their frequency is increasing annually. Skin tumours (melanoma, basal and squamous cell carcinoma, etc.) can be used for a good screening activity, but in relation to breast or cervix uteri cancer needs to be better defined. A test on a population of selected patients against skin malignant neoplasms has been carried out in our Centre. All of them had skin lesions and further checks were necessary. METHODS: The diagnostic protocol used in our Centre for Oncological Prevention uses the collection of anamnestic data and an objective examination. Between 1996 and 2000, 222 patients between the ages of 18 and 80 have been selected. All of them had suspected skin lesions. The patients were selected by the oncologist, particularly for pigmentation, asymmetry, irregular borders and heterogeneous colour of their skin lesions. Subsequently, the patients were sent for a further examination to the dermatologist oncologist, who on the basis of the objective dermatological examination with possible dermatoscopy, made a clinical diagnosis of the skin injuries or suggested surgical removal for the histological control of the same. RESULTS: Requested consultations: 222. Exami-nations made: 195. Patients considered: 190. Skin injuries examined: 190. The following skin lesions were identified: melanoma: 4 (2.1%) [2: I Clark level; 2: II Clark level]; basal cell carcinoma: 14 (7.37%); dermatofibrosarcoma: 1 (0.53%); keratoacanthoma: 1 (0.53%); dysplastic nevus: 4 (2.1%); actinic keratosis: 7 (3.68%); benign lesions: 159 (83.68%). CONCLUSIONS: These data were obtained by a screening program and it is therefore not a random study. This study shows interesting results because tumoral skin lesions and in particular melanoma were recognised at early stages. This is more than enough for us to create a specific screening program for skin lesions to cut down the rate of morbidity and mortality.

ABSTRACT

The results of Doppler sonography and the echotomographic evaluation of extracranial arteries performed on 139 asymptomatic patients aged above 60 are presented. Atheromatous lesions were found in 54 (38.85%) of the subjects, though most had no hemodynamic effects. Statistical analysis showed an increase in both number and gravity of lesions with advancing age in females alone. No significant association was found between risk factors and atheromatous lesions, except for smoking in males.

ABSTRACT

Fifty-four subjects suffering from TIA or Stroke underwent normal ECG and Holter ECG ten days after ischemic cerebral event in order to point out cardiac dysrhythmias as possible causes of TIA or Stroke. Holter ECG proved positive in 70.3% of subjects versus 38.8% of normal ECG (p < 0.001). We underline the utility of cardiological valuation in patients suffering from TIA or Stroke in order to search for cardiac causes of ischemic cerebral events and to prevent relapses.

ABSTRACT

Smooth muscle involvement is relatively common in myotonic muscular dystrophy (MMD). The effects of cisapride on gallbladder motor function in myotonic patients have been investigated in 10 alithiasic patients and in 10 healthy volunteers. Gallbladder volumes were measured by ultrasonography in fasting state and 15, 30, 45 and 60 min after milk intake. The patients were treated with cisapride for two months, after which they underwent a second ultrasonographic examination. Gallbladder emptying was slower and less effective in dystrophic patients than in healthy volunteers. Cisapride was found to improve gallbladder kinetics (efficacy of contraction and rate of emptying) in patients affected with myotonic muscular dystrophy.

ABSTRACT

Motor neuron diseases (MND) associations with paraproteinemia, lymphoma, hexosaminidase A deficiency and heavy-metal intoxication are of great interest. A case of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (SLA) associated with multiple myeloma (monoclonal IgG paraproteinemia and K light chains) is reported. The detection of abnormal protein in 1988 and the increase of its serum level during 1989 were strictly correlated with the beginning and the worsening of the neurological disease. Shy and coll. in 1986 affirmed that association of paraproteins with MND is probably not merely the fortuitous association of a common laboratory abnormality and an uncommon disease. The reported case provides elements for a causal association between paraproteinemia and MND.

ABSTRACT

Reported here are the results of an open controlled study on the use of GM1 in cases of ischemic strokes in its acute phase. A statistically significant improvement was observed in cases treated with GM1 for neurological deficits (assessed by Mathew's rating scale, modified by Fritz-Werner) at 21, 60 and 120 days and for disability at 120 days.
