ABSTRACT

The fabrication, by an all electrochemical process, of porous Si/ZnO nanostructures with engineered structural defects, leading to strong and broadband deep level emission from ZnO, is presented. Such nanostructures are fabricated by a combination of metal-assisted chemical etching of Si and direct current electrodeposition of ZnO. It makes the whole fabrication process low-cost, compatible with Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor technology, scalable and easily industrialised. The photoluminescence spectra of the porous Si/ZnO nanostructures reveal a correlation between the lineshape, as well as the strength of the emission, with the morphology of the underlying porous Si, that control the induced defects in the ZnO. Appropriate fabrication conditions of the porous Si lead to exceptionally bright Gaussian-type emission that covers almost the entire visible spectrum, indicating that porous Si/ZnO nanostructures could be a cornerstone material towards white-light-emitting devices.

ABSTRACT

In this communication, we describe the synthesis of new chiral alumina nanofilms and surfaces. Our method is based on chiral templating of alumina nanofilms by cellulose microfibers using the atomic layer deposition process. The chiral nature of the alumina nanofilms was characterized by a variety of techniques, such as quartz crystal microbalance, chiral circular-dichroism adsorption, chiral high-performance liquid chromatography and cyclic voltammetry measurements.

ABSTRACT

Homo- and heterochiral Langmuir films of a chiral derivative of stearic acid are studied in situ on the surface of liquid mercury as a function of surface coverage by surface tensiometry and surface-specific synchrotron X-ray diffraction and reflectivity. A transition from a phase of surface-parallel molecules to a phase of standing-up molecules is found. The former shows no surface-parallel long-range order. The standing-up phase of both homochiral and heterochiral compositions exhibit long-range order. However, the former has an oblique unit cell with parallel molecular planes, and the later has a centered rectangular unit cell with a herringbone molecular packing. For both cases, the standing-up molecules are tilted by 44 degrees from the surface normal and pack at a density of 19.5 A(2)/molecule in the plane normal to the molecular long axis. Important differences are found, and discussed, between this behavior and that of a Langmuir film of the nonchiral stearic acid on mercury.

ABSTRACT

In this paper we describe the synthesis of chiral mesoporous silica based on chiral block copolymers of poly(ethylene oxide) and of d-phenylalanine (PEO-b-D-Phe) as a surfactant template. The resulting porous structures are characterized by nitrogen sorption experiments, transmission electron microscopy, and small-angle XRD. It is shown that chiral block copolymers of PEO-b-D-Phe are effective as a surfactant template for the preparation of silica materials with highly ordered periodic mesoporous structures of hexagonal symmetry with a pore size of ca. 5 nm and high surface areas of ca. 700 m2/g. The enantioselectivity feature of this porous silica, after the extraction of the chiral copolymers, was examined by selective adsorption of enantiomers and racemic solutions of valine. The selective adsorption was measured by circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. A chiral selectivity factor of 2.34 was found with the D enantiomer of valine adsorbed preferably.
