ABSTRACT

The Cyclotron Institute at Texas A&M is currently configuring a scheme for the production of radioactive-ion beams that incorporates a light-ion guide and a heavy-ion guide coupled with an electron-cyclotron-resonance ion source constructed for charge-breeding. This scheme is part of an upgrade to the facility and is intended to produce radioactive beams suitable for injection into the K500 superconducting cyclotron. The current status of the project and details on the ion sources used in the project is presented.

ABSTRACT

The 14.5 GHz electron-cyclotron-resonance ion source (ECRIS) designed and fabricated specifically for charge breeding has been installed at the Texas A&M University Cyclotron Institute for use in the institute's ongoing radioactive-ion-beam upgrade. The initial testing of the source has just begun with magnetic analysis of the ECRIS beam. The source has only been conditioning for a brief time at low microwave power, and it is continuing to improve. After the source has been conditioned and characterized, charge-breeding trials with stable beams from a singly ionizing source will begin.

ABSTRACT

A panel of fifteen biotinylated lectins was used to study the saccharides associated with the epithelial component of normal and leukoplakic mucosa and squamous cell carcinoma, from a variety of locations in the oral cavity. Lectin binding heterogeneity was found between various sites of normal mucosa. The binding to leukoplakic epithelium closely resembled normal, with similar site heterogeneity. However, the features of cell-capping and cellular expression of the blood group A antigen, as observed in normal and most leukoplakic epithelia, were not observed in squamous cell carcinoma. These results show that neoplasia in oral squamous epithelium is associated with alterations in terminal N-acetyl-D-galactosamine, N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, D-mannose, L-fucose, D-glucosamine and D-galactosamine residues present in the outer parts of both O-linked and N-linked glycoconjugates, along with high levels of terminal sialation of certain residues.

ABSTRACT

Several difficulties arise in the introduction of foetal blood sampling in a regional hospital. Ideally there should be a unit sufficient to provide continuous registrar cover (anaesthetic cover and medical cover) of the labour suite. In our hospital duties have been reallocated in an attempt to attain this standard. Both consultant and registrar staff must take adequate study leave to understand the principle and practice of blood sampling. Regular lectures and demonstrations must be given to nursing and resident staff. The cost of the initial equipment is abut pound1,000.double daggerFoetal blood sampling has been employed in the unit since January 1968. Its principal use has been the assessment of "foetal distress" Except for one case no low pH value has been found in a "high risk" patient unless the foetus showed signs of clinical distress.
