ABSTRACT

New optical phasing sensor technologies have been studied with a test bench experiment, called Active Phasing Experiment, on-sky at the European Southern Observatory Very Large Telescope. One of the sensors was of the Shack-Hartmann type using cylindrical lenslets across the segment borders for the measurement of the phasing errors. With bright stars, the precision of the measurement of piston steps at a single border was better than 9 nm wavefront RMS, and the precision of the closed-loop correction of the piston errors of the segments across the whole mirror was better than 10 nm wavefront RMS. With dimmer stars of magnitude up to 14.5, precisions of the order of 22 nm wavefront RMS were obtained.

ABSTRACT

We report the case of a young woman who suffered from a seizure after use of almotriptan. There was a recurrence with ergotamine. We discuss possible link with susceptibility genes.

ABSTRACT

The 5-Word test is a bedside memory test with free and cued selective recollection. Here, we evaluated its reliability Belgian French speakers. Five groups were studied : normal subjects, depressive patients, patients with AD, patients with vascular dementia and 47 patients for a validation of a logistic model. The results of the 5-Word test with the MMSE, both values were included as variables in a logistic regression model. The probability of diagnosis of AD and dementia can be calculated and used prospectively for assessment of new cases in a validation study. The importance of the study of free and cued response during immediate and delayed recall was assessed by variance analysis in 4 groups. A third order interaction (p < 0.001) was observed between the normal and AD groups, the normal and vascular dementia (VD) groups and between AD and VD groups. With this initial model, 98% of the 62 normal subjects and the 57 patients with AD were correctly classified (p < 0.001). For AD diagnosis at the onset, the sensitivity of the MMSE is increased when it is associated with the 5-Word. This low-tech bedside method associating the 5-Word test and MMSE has a good specificity for the diagnosis of AD. It is very useful for screening a population of patients at the onset of cognitive and memory deficiency and for selecting the patients requiring an examination at a memory clinic.

ABSTRACT

Sciatic nerve palsy is an uncommon complication of cardiac surgery and is thought to be induced by a combination of reduced femoral artery blood flow, small vessel vascular disease or prolonged hypoxia. We here describe a new case which is the first described with transient elevation of antiphospholipid antibodies. Although transient elevation of lupus coagulation inhibitor is known to occur frequently in patients treated in an intensive care unit, there are very few data about the possible role of antiphospholipid antibodies in the generation of ischemic neuropathies. We can not prove that the ischemic neuropathy in our case has been favored by the presence of lupus coagulation inhibitor and antiphospholipid antibodies as the occurrence of the symptoms seemed to precede the transient elevation of lupus coagulation inhibitor. This case suggests that antiphospholipid antibodies and lupus coagulation inhibitor should be included in the work up of patients who present nerve damage after cardiac surgery but further studies are needed to ascertain this association.
