ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Metastases to the female genital tract from extragenital primary tumors are unusual. We report a rare case of uterine cervix metastasis from colon adenocarcinoma and discuss diagnostic and therapeutic issues. CASE REPORT: We report a case of a 38-year-old North African Caucasian woman treated for a non-metastatic colon adenocarcinoma. She had a sigmoidectomy and incomplete adjuvant chemotherapy. Six months later, she consulted with vaginal bleeding caused by a cervical tumor, which was confirmed to be metastatic disease, and the patient underwent decompressive and hemostatic radiotherapy. CONCLUSION: Uterine cervix metastasis from primary colon adenocarcinoma is rare. The resection remains the standard protocol for the local treatment of resectable metastatic disease. Otherwise, systemic therapy is the preferable option.

ABSTRACT

The synthesis of new fluorescent polymers based on π-conjugated chains is a major challenge for organic electronic. The materials must be soluble, stable over long periods and able to be produced with a high yield. In particular, poly (vinylcarbazole), poly (fluorenes), and poly (thiophene) partially meet these criteria. In this study, new soluble copolymers PVK-F8T2 was synthesized from poly(9-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) and poly[(9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl)-co-(bithiophène)] (F8T2). As these materials are highly luminescent and green-emitting, they have good chemical and thermal stability and can be easily functionalized. Here, the vibrational and optical properties of PVK-F8T2 was studied using several different techniques, including Infrared absorption, Raman scattering, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), UV-visible optical absorption, and both stationary and transient photoluminescence. The novel copolymer shows an increase of thermal stability compared to the two original polymers (PVK and F8T2). The stationary and transient photoluminescence reveal an energy transfer from PVK to F8T2. This study indicates that these copolymers are good candidates for photophysical applications.

ABSTRACT

The nanocomposite material was elaborated (developed) by mixing of the PVK-F8BT copolymer onto the single walled carbon nanotubes SWCNTs. The new composites were prepared with various weight concentrations of SWCNTs (0.75%, 1.5% and 3%). Different experimental analyses were performed to examine their morphological features and their optical and vibrational spectroscopy behaviors as a function of the concentration of short single-walled carbon nanotubes. Π-staking interaction and the functionalization process between the copolymer and the SWCNTs have a considerable effect on the vibratory and photoemissive properties of the copolymer matrix. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission (TEM) were used. Then, Raman scattering and steady state and time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) and (TRPL) measurements were used to study the evolution of spectroscopic characteristics and optical properties of the PVK-F8BT/SWCNTs composites. An extinction effect of PL and a decrease in the average life of the exciton time was observed. These indicated the processing of a charge transfer leading to exciton dissociations to the SWCNTs matrix. The results, also supported by DFT-based modeling method have proven a strong evidence of the functionalization and the charge transfer between the SWCNTs and the PVK-F8BT copolymer and predicted equally a correlation of structural properties.

ABSTRACT

An original nanocomposite material was prepared by in-situ grafting of a PVK-PPV copolymer onto SWCNTs. The new composites were elaborated with various SWCNTs weight concentrations into homemade PVK-PPV copolymer. Different experimental analyses were performed to investigate their morphological features and their optical and vibrational spectroscopy behaviors as a function of the concentration of carbon nanotubes. Π-staking and covalent interactions and functionalization process between copolymer and SWCNT undergo dramatic effect in vibrational and photoemissives properties of copolymer matrix. Transmission (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used. Then, resonant Raman scattering and steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) and (TRPL) measurements were used to study the evolution of the spectroscopic characteristics and optical properties of PVK-PPV/SWCNTs composites. As results, we have observed PL quenching effect and a decrease of average life time. These indicated the processing of a charge transfer that leads to exciton dissociations to the SWCNTs matrix. Such results, also supported by modelling based on DFT method, have given a strong evidence of the functionalization and the charge transfer between the SWCNTs and the PVK-PPV copolymer and predicted a structure-properties correlation.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study is to specify the role of imaging in the initial management of ballistic traumas. METHODS: This is a retrospective study that colligated 83 victims of a gunshot wound during demonstrations, treated in our trauma centre between 12 January and 3 February 2011. All of the patients were haemodynamically stable and examined by conventional radiography and/or ultrasound and/or 16-slice CT-scan (CT). RESULTS: The mean age of the victims was 26years with a sex ratio of 0.02. All wounds were unique. Injury to the limbs was most common in 75.5% of the cases (n=64) followed by that of the torso in 19.5% of the cases (n=16). Wounds in the spine (n=2), brain (n=2) and facial skeleton (n=1) were observed. Conventional x-rays objectified 32 cases of open fractures 95% of which were in the legs. Twenty-one of the victims of gunshot wounds had a CT-scan that objectified the path of the bullet and an assessment of the wound was made in all cases. The confrontation of the data from the CT-scan and that noted during surgery and during the monitoring demonstrated that the CT-scan is very efficient in the diagnosis of pleural effusion, vascular wounds, thoracic parenchymatous wounds and wounds of the solid organs and brain lesions and the facial skeleton. However, the sensitivity is low for the diagnosis of hollow organs. CONCLUSION: The CT-scan is very useful in the initial care of stable patients with gunshot wounds as regards the haemodynamics and helps objectify the path of the bullet and obtain a precise assessment of the damage. Conventional x-rays are unavoidable for wounds to the legs and spine.

ABSTRACT

Presacral schwannoma is a rare tumor, diagnosed essentially by pelvi-rectal digital examination. Diagnostic investigations should include initial CT-scan followed by pelvic MRI. The role of angiography and preoperative biopsy remain debated. Management is surgical: several surgical routes are possible to remove the tumor; resection essentially consists of enucleation.

ABSTRACT

Based on Density Functional Theory (DFT), the effect of alkoxyl substituents groups on the excited states of new PPV derivative (PPV-ether) are studied. Thus differences on the relaxation energy, the atomic charge distribution and the conjugation length at their excited state are interpreted on the pathways of the nature on the emissive species. Photoluminescence and optical spectra of the corresponding modeling structures are carried out. Furthermore, the life time at the excited state are emphasized either theoretically from oscillator strength or experimentally from time resolved photoluminescence.

ABSTRACT

Bening fibrous histiocytoma is one of the most frequent benign tumors. Most tumors are found in the skin, particularly on the limbs. Tumor size is usually small. According to the WHO, a deep location is found for less than 1% of all benign fibrous histiocytomas. Most deep tumors occur in the subcutaneous tissue. Deep locations in other organs have also been reported. We report a case and discuss the pathological and clinical aspects of this rare tumor.

ABSTRACT

Tubal carcinoma is rare and its prognosis is poor. His diagnosis before intervention is not easy because clinic is poor and complementary exams not specifics. His treatment is radical surgery by laparoscopy associated with chemotherapy. The prognosis is correlated with cancer stage and residual tumoral volume after surgery. We report a 55 years case who underwent coelioscpic annexectomy for left pyosalpinx. Definitive histology answered tubal cancer. Patient dead after three months because disseminated and parietal metastasis.

ABSTRACT

Isolated dislocation of the carpal scaphoid is an extremely rare injury, which is usually accompanied by significant ligamento-capsular lesions. A review of the literature found only 21 reported cases. The aim of this report is to present a single case of isolated radio-palmar dislocation of the scaphoid treated conservatively, which provided a good functional result at 10 years follow up.

ABSTRACT

Ipsilateral radial head dislocation with radial shaft fracture is a rare injury. A few cases have been reported in the literature. We report the case of a 39-year-old man who presented with a radial shaft fracture and ipsilateral dislocation of the radial head caused by hyperpronation trauma of the forearm with hyperflexion of the elbow. The dislocation was reduced by manipulation after open reduction of the radial shaft fracture, which was then fixed with a plate. The clinical and radiological outcome was good with 2 years follow-up.
