The human papillomavirus (HPV) has been identified as the causative agent of a growing subset of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas. The HPV status of the tumors provides prognostic information and may direct treatment strategies. The new and somewhat surprising results presented this years will have an important impact on the treatment of HPV positive head and neck cancers.Key words: cetuximab - head and neck cancer - human papillomavirus - oropharyngeal cancer.
