ABSTRACT

Preoperative teaching is an important part of patient care and can prevent complications, as well as promote patient fulfillment during hospitalization. A study was conducted at Alton Ochsner Medical Foundation in New Orleans, LA, in 1989, to determine the impact of a preoperative teaching program on the incidence of postoperative atelectasis and patient satisfaction. Results showed no significant difference of postoperative complications and patient gratification after participating in a structured preoperative teaching program. As part of this study, it was identified that a patient evaluation tool for a preoperative teaching class needed to be developed. The phases of this process are explained in the following article.

ABSTRACT

1. With the elimination of time constraints, fear of rejection, and lack of understanding of the publication process, effective communication and sharing of experiences and expertise among nurses can be enhanced through writing for publication. 2. Important author responsibilities, such as being aware of the number of manuscript copies to be sent with the original, typing and reference format of the journal, letters of transmittal, and acknowledgements, can be found in the journal's guidelines. 3. Understanding the publication process and learning how to use the components can lead to positive results for prospective authors.

ABSTRACT

1. One of the most important responsibilities of a nurse is preoperative preparation of the patient for surgery. Preoperative teaching helps to relieve some of the emotional stress patients have when facing surgery. 2. By providing a structured preoperative teaching class, the nurse can inform, support, and collaborate with adult surgical patients about the planned care. The nurse can also involve patients as partners in making the best possible decisions about their care. 3. Patient evaluations about the preoperative education class revealed a high level of satisfaction. The classes were believed to be an important contribution to patient education.

ABSTRACT

1. Individual instruction is the preferred method for teaching patients; however, because of staffing limitations, nurses have less quality time to provide teaching solely by this method. 2. A booklet describing basic information about surgery and an accompanying videotape allow patients to review the material at their own pace and ask questions when they are ready. 3. The booklet and videotape allow the nursing staff to reinforce the material without neglecting other patients and provide flexibility of teaching methods to accommodate the various learning needs of different patients.
