ABSTRACT

Combined treatment of patients with cancer of the oral mucosa using a dynamic course of irradiation in combination with local hyperthermia was proposed. Altogether 55 patients were treated, of them in 51 (92.7%) complete tumor regression was achieved. The short-term results were indicative of the efficacy of the above method.

ABSTRACT

The authors substantiated the effectiveness of local irradiation of the parasternal lymph node chain by means of cylindrical 60Co sources of original design. Sizes of the sources: total length--65 mm, active length--60 mm, external diameter--1 mm. This type of irradiation as part of combined and multimodality therapy was used in 112 patients. This method is easy to perform and well tolerated by patients.

ABSTRACT

The authors presented the immediate and 3-year results of interstitial and combined therapy of 90 patients with cancer of the tongue and oral fundus mucosa. 60Co- and 252Cf-sources were employed in interstitial radiotherapy. There were no significant differences in therapeutic efficacy using different radiation sources. Some methodological aspects of administration of interstitial radiotherapy, radiation reactions and complications were covered.

ABSTRACT

The authors devised a technique of interstitial radiation therapy for locally disseminated vaginal recurrences and metastases that occur after the use of various therapeutic methods for uterine and rectal cancer. Indications and counterindications to interstitial radiation therapy with 60Co as an independent method or the main therapeutic component in combined or multimodality treatment, were determined. Methods of the topometric and dosimetric planning of treatment, methods of needle administration and fixation by the system of manual afterloading were developed. Interstitial radiation therapy was given to 22 patients with a complete tumor regression in 17 of them. Interstitial radiation therapy is recommended as a method of choice for the therapy of vaginal recurrences and metastases.

ABSTRACT

The paper is concerned with mathematical calculations of two methods to determine the amount of the functioning renal parenchyma using the polyposition statistic scintigraphy data. These methods are used to determine the depth of kidney location from the body surface in the lumbar region. An analysis of polyposition scintigraphy of 122 patients without tumor lesion has shown that in 41.7% of the cases the difference in the depth of location was over 1 cm. in 13.1% over 2 cm and in 5.7% over 3 cm. If one of the kidneys is shifted forward by 3 cm, in scintigraphy gamma-irradiation from this kidney for 99mTc will be weakened more than 1.5 times, and for 197Hg more than 1.75 times. It is only in renal insufficiency and in obese patients that the method of estimated RPD accumulation in the kidneys with regard to lateral projections is the best as compared to that using the results of scintigraphy of front and back projections.

ABSTRACT

Observations over 3308 patients with skin cancer were conducted, 77.5% of them were in stage I, 19.7%--in stage II, 2.6%--in stage III and 0.2%--in stage IV. The incidence in males was twice as rare as in females. The dependence of skin cancer on sex was studied in 1645 patients. The majority of patients aged from 51 to 70 years. According to histological findings basalioma was observed in 75.9% and squamous-cell cancer--in 24.1%. Short-focal roentgenotherapy at voltage of 40--60 kw was employed in 94,3%, the combined therapy--in 4.5% and the associated one--in 1.2%. Doses from 5000 to 7000 r (79.5% of patients) were routinely used. The clinical cure was gained in 97.7%, the duration of radiation effect realization was 3--4 weeks in 60 percent of cases. The clinical cure was seldom observed in dosage under 4000 r. The results of 10-year observations indicated that among 2616 patients recurrences were noted in 63 (2.4%). Short-focal roentgenotherapy and the combined treatment seem to be the methods of choice intreatment for skin cancer.
