ABSTRACT

Environmental monitoring studies were developed in an area located on the outer shelf in the Potiguar Basin, Brazilian equatorial margin. This tropical shelf represents a modern, highly dynamic mixed carbonate-siliciclastic system. Field sampling was carried out during 3 cruises surrounding a shallow-water exploratory well to compare sediment properties of the seafloor, including grain size, texture, mineral composition, carbonate content, and organic matter, prior to drilling with samples obtained 3 and 12 months after drilling. The sample grid used had 16 stations located along 4 radials from 50 m the well up to a distance of 500 m. Sediments were analyzed in the first 0-2 cm and 0-10 cm layers. The results show that sedimentary cover around the well is dominated by bioclastic sediments, poor to very poorly sorted. Only minor sedimentological variations occurred in the area affected by drilling operations. The most noticeable effects were observed during the second cruise, in terms of a change in grain size distribution associated to a slight increase in siliciclastic content. This impact occurred in the most surficial sediment (0-2 cm), in the radials closest to the well (50 m), and could suggest the effects of drilling. However, in the third cruise, 1 year after drilling, the sediments return to show the same characteristics as in the first cruise. These results show no significant sedimentological variations due to drilling activity and indicate that ocean dynamics in this area was high enough to recover the environment original characteristics.

ABSTRACT

A soil geochemical dataset (major and minor elements), based on low-density sampling, is provided for NE-Brazil (ca. 1.7 million km²). It covers an area from about 2°S to 12°S, and from 34°W to 49°W, and refers to top (TOP: 0-20 cm) and bottom (BOT: 30-50 cm) mineral soils. Results are put in perspective using two recent and comparable studies, the National Geochemical Survey of Australia (NGSA) and the European Geochemical Mapping of Agricultural Soils (GEMAS). All median element concentrations in the Brazilian samples are depleted compared to World Soil Averages (WSA), except for Al2O3 and SiO2, which are respectively similar to WSA and enriched in Brazil. While the depletion is moderate for Fe2O3, MnO, P2O5, and TiO2, it reaches an order of magnitude and more for K2O, MgO, CaO, and Na2O. The difference between TOP and BOT concentrations is lower than the variation of either TOP or BOT concentrations between sample sites. Similar spatial distribution and the high correlation between TOP and BOT concentrations suggest that (1) similar processes and parameters are of general relevance for the geochemical composition of TOP and BOT samples, and (2) topsoil and subsoil are not decoupled. Cluster analysis revealed similar results for TOP and BOT samples, yielding three groups of elements/oxides displaying similar behavior: Gr.1 comprising Al2O3, Fe2O3, TiO2, and P2O5; Gr.2 comprising CaO, K2O, MgO, MnO, and Na2O; and Gr.3 being SiO2. Weathering indicators are significantly positively correlated and show similar spatial distributions in TOP and BOT samples. All elements deliver similar mass removal times (time to export all material from a 10 cm soil layer) and clearly discern between the regions: Europe with the fastest "depletion" (12,200 ± 300 years), followed by Australia (33,200 ± 3000 years) and Brazil (86,700 ± 3000 years). Similar results emerge when calculating denudation rates, using independent fluvial denudation data in large basins.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of caloric restriction (CR) on myenteric neurons in the duodenum of Wistar rats during aging. Thirty rats were divided into three groups: the C group (six-month-old animals that were fed a normal diet from weaning until six months of age), the SR group (18-month-old animals that were fed a normal diet from weaning until 18 months of age) and the CR group (18-month-old animals that were fed a 30% CR diet after six months of age). After 12 months, the animals were euthanized. Whole-mount preparations of the duodenums were either stained with Giemsa or underwent NADPH-diaphorase histochemistry to determine the general myenteric neuron population and the nitrergic neuron subpopulation (NADPH-d+), respectively. The NADPH-d-negative (NADPH-d-) neuron population was estimated based on the difference between the Giemsa-stained and NADPH-d+ neurons. The neurons were counted, and the cell body areas were measured. Aging was associated with neuronal loss in the SR group, which was minimized by caloric restriction in the CR group. The density (mm(2)) of the Giemsa-stained neurons was higher in the SR group (79.09 ± 6.25) than in the CR (92.37 ± 11.6) and C (111.68 ± 15.26) groups. The density of the NADPH-d+ neurons was higher in the SR group (44.90 ± 5.88) than in the C (35.75 ± 1.6) and RC (39.14 ± 7.02) groups. The density of NADPH-d- neurons was higher in the CR (49.73 ± 12.08) and C (75.64 ± 17.05) groups than in the SR group (33.82 ± 4.5). In the C group, 32% and 68% of the Giemsa-stained myenteric neurons were NADPH-d+ or NADPH-d-, respectively. With aging (SR group), the percentage of nitrergic neurons (56.77%) increased, whereas the percentage of NADPH-d- neurons (43.22%) decreased. In the CR group, the change in the percentage of nitrergic (42.37%) and NADPH-d- (57.62%) neurons was lower. As NADPH-d- neurons will be mostly cholinergic neurons, CR appears to reduce the loss of cholinergic neurons during aging. The cell body dimensions (µm(2)) were not altered by aging or CR. Thus, CR had a protective effect on myenteric neurons during aging.

UNLABELLED: With 2 figures and 3 tables SUMMARY: The morphological pattern of the myenteric plexus (MP) is species-specific, and little is known about this pattern in Holtzman rats. The aim of the current experiment was the morphological and quantitative study of myenteric neurones in the Holtzman rat jejunum. Hematoxylin-Eosin and NADH-diaphorase (NADH-dp) staining were used to assess muscular layer thickness, neurone cell body area (CBA) and nuclei area (NA). Muscular layer thickness was found to be 114.77 ± 14.89 µm. Neuronal densities across the subregions of the jejunum were similar: mesenteric, 11.78 ± 2.89/mm(2) ; intermediate, 12.06 ± 2.69/mm(2) ; and antimesenteric, 10.67 ± 1.89/mm(2) . As expected, there was positive correlation between the CBA and NA of 79.19, 79.26 and 78.5% in the mesenteric, intermediate and antimesenteric subregions of the jejunum, respectively. Medium-sized neurones predominated in the ganglionic arrangement of the MP. These results indicate that the NADH-dp myenteric neurones in the jejunum of Holtzman rats are similar in many aspects to those found in the ileum of Holtzman rats and to those found in the small intestine of Wistar rats, including their location, ganglionic disposition and predominance of medium-sized CBA. However, neuronal density in the jejunum is lower than in the ileum. Based on these results showing morphological similarities to the MP of the Wistar rat, the Holtzman strain can be used to investigate the effects of adverse conditions on the morphology of the MP.
