ABSTRACT

KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER STATEMENT: The results of this study confirm the difficulties experienced by patients in the oral sphere. They also show that patients are able to adapt and that their demands go beyond functional rehabilitation. This work should encourage dental practitioners to be part of the overall management of the disease, involving regular checkups, preventive dental measures, and oral hygiene education. Therefore, more effective communication is required, not only between the dental and dermatological teams but also with the parents and caregivers.

ABSTRACT

Animal robustness is a complex trait of importance for livestock production systems and genetic selection. Phenotyping is essential for evaluation of the adaptation of different genotypes to changing environments. This study tested an experimental framework to induce marked deviations in the adaptive responses of suckling beef cows and to identify relevant indicators of responses to characterise individual differences in the robustness of cows. The production and metabolic responses of primiparous suckling Charolais cows to two periods of feed restriction (FR, 50% of their net energy requirements) of different durations were monitored. After calving, 13 cows (aged 39 ±â€¯2 months, BW of 680 ±â€¯42 kg at calving) had ad libitum access to a diet composed of hay and supplemented with concentrate to meet their energy and protein requirements. Starting at 54 ±â€¯6 days postcalving, the cows underwent two periods of FR: 4 days of FR (FR4), which was followed by 17 days of ad libitum intake to study the recovery from FR4, and 10 days of FR (FR10), which was followed by 18 days of ad libitum intake to study the recovery from FR10. The milk yield (MY), BW, body condition score and plasma non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA), ß-hydroxybutyrate, glucose and urea concentrations were measured before, during and after each FR. Among all measured variables, the MY and NEFA concentrations showed the most significant changes in response to FR. A functional data analysis approach was applied to the MY and NEFA data to model the adaptive responses and extract quantifiable indicators of deviation and recovery. Linear correlations (P < 0.03-0.07) between FR4 and FR10 were found for some indicators describing MY and NEFA levels before and after FR. The overall repeatability of MY and NEFA responses between both FR accounted for 46% based on quartile analysis performed on average responses. Moreover, the variance in both the MY and NEFA variables did not differ significantly between FR4 and FR10, despite a trend for higher variances in FR10. Altogether, (1) the calculated variables derived from the functional data analysis of the time patterns of the MY and NEFA accounted for the differences in the cow responses to FR, and (2) the animal responses appeared to show concordance between FR4 and FR10. In conclusion, short-term FR is a relevant framework for studying productive and metabolic adaptive responses in suckling cows and allows the identification of potential robustness indicators.

ABSTRACT

Approximately 20,000 species of flowering plant offer mainly pollen to their pollinators, generally bees. Stamen dimorphism, a floral trait commonly present in some pollen flowers, is thought to be associated with exclusive pollen provision for highly effective bee pollinators. Notwithstanding, little is known about how stamen dimorphism is related to other floral morphological traits and, consequently, plant-pollinator interactions at the community scale. Here we investigated the relationship between stamen dimorphism and other floral morphological traits, as well as the interactions with pollinators in plants of Melastomataceae. We characterized each plant species as stamen dimorphic or stamen isomorphic according to differences in size and shape between stamen sets. Data on interactions between the plants and their bee pollinators were analysed as quantitative bipartite networks. We found that petal and style size and shape were correlated to stamen dimorphism. Stamen dimorphic species present larger flowers and less variable style shapes than stamen isomorphic species. Furthermore, stamen dimorphism is associated with higher richness of visiting bees, i.e. higher ecological generalization. During the evolutionary history of Melastomataceae, the dependence on pollinators for fruit set has possibly favoured the evolution of larger flowers with dimorphic stamens, which in turn are able to make use of a larger spectrum of pollen-collecting bees, leading to ecological generalization.

ABSTRACT

RATIONALE & AIMS: Pancreatic cancer (PC) is the third most common type of gastrointestinal tract cancer in Europe and the fourth leading cause of death by cancer. Its initial stage is asymptomatic Therefore, the diagnosis tends to be late leading to locally advanced stages that presuppose late and debilitating symptoms, which consequently makes the Nutritional Status (NS) get worse. The weight loss (WL), malnutrition, and oncologic cachexia, which are quite prevalent in PC patients, reflect a poor prognosis. We aimed to track and evaluate the NS and Functional Status (FS) of PC patients (hospitalized patients - HP and Day Hospital patients - DHP) and associate NS with symptoms with nutritional impact and FS. METHODS: Observational cohort study in PC patients from Garcia de Orta Hospital. NS was tracked and evaluated using Nutritional Risk Screening (NRS-2002) and Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA). To assess FS we used the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG), Karnofsky Performance Scale Index (KPSI) and Handgrip Dynamometer (HGD). RESULTS: 41 PC patients (30-HP and 11-DHP). 29 patients in stage IV of the tumor. 24 with a WL >10% in the last 6 months. 37 manifest symptoms with nutritional impact. 30 to 34 malnourished according to the GLIM criteria and PG-SGA, respectively. 11 in ECOG level 2 and corresponding KPSI, 10 in level 3 and 8 in level 4. 28 patients had a value of HGD below the 10th percentile. NRS-2002, PG-SGA and GLIM criteria were positively correlated with the symptoms (p < 0.01), % WL (p < 0.01) and ECOG (p < 0.01) and negatively correlated with HGS (p < 0.05 - NRS-2002; p < 0.01 - PG-SGA and GLIM criteria). CONCLUSIONS: PC patients manifest debilitating symptoms with nutritional impact, namely severe WL and anorexia, which in turn lead to deterioration of the NS and FS. It is an oncology population with high nutritional risk and a higher prevalence of malnutrition, associated with severe % WL and symptoms and a sharp decline in FS.

ABSTRACT

Urolithiasis has a high incidence among confined sheep. It is multifactorial and may cause economic damage. Our aim was to determine the capacity of urinary acidification using ammonium chloride in sheep. Twenty-five 3-month-old male sheep were confined and randomly divided into three groups; the G200 and G500 groups received 200mg/kg/GW and 500mg/kg/GW of ammonium chloride daily for 56 consecutive days, respectively, whereas the CG group did not receive ammonium chloride. Sampling times and clinical evaluation were performed weekly, starting from the 14th day of confinement (M1 or immediately before administering ammonium chloride) until the 17th day (M9) of the feedlot. Hemogasometry, biochemical examination of serum urea and creatinine concentration and ultrasound evaluation of the urinary tract were performed. The urinalysis indicated a higher incidence of ammonium magnesium phosphate crystals at the beginning of the study, showing a migration to urate crystal formation, mainly in the G500 group because of urinary acidification. No hemogasometric, serum biochemistry, ruminal fluid, or ultrasonographic changes were observed. Urinary acidification was achieved and maintained after M7 during the administration of ammonium chloride in the G500 group, but not in the other study groups.(AU)

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine the effect of several factors on the uptake of tetanus vaccination in pregnant women. STUDY DESIGN: This is a systematic review and meta-analysis of the global literature. METHODS: The search strategy was carried out in the EMBASE and MEDLINE (Pubmed) databases, without language restrictions. The databases were searched from the beginning until May 2020. Fixed and random effect models were applied according to the methodological heterogeneity between the included studies. The I2 test was performed to assess the magnitude of the heterogeneity. The results were presented as a grouped odds ratio (OR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) and a significance level of 0.05. RESULTS: The initial search strategy generated 14,349 original articles. In total, 31 studies met all inclusion criteria and 20 articles were included in the meta-analysis. The grouped and subgroup analyses showed a significant association between tetanus vaccination and the following factors: higher number of prenatal visits (OR: 2.00; 95% CI: 1.17-3.42), higher maternal age (OR: 1.24, 95% CI: 1.02-1.50), being single (OR: 1.41; 95% CI: 1.20-1.65), professional vaccine guidance (OR: 9.00; 95% CI: 1.81-44.75) and uptake of influenza vaccine (OR: 5.87; 95% CI: 1.39-24.73). CONCLUSIONS: The uptake of tetanus vaccine in pregnant women is associated with various factors. The identification of these factors is an important step towards the implementation of public health strategies aimed at improving immunisation against tetanus in pregnant women.

ABSTRACT

Understanding the dynamics of plant-associated microbial communities within agriculture is well documented. However, the ecological processes that assemble the plant microbiome are not well understood. This study elucidates the relative dominance of assembly processes across plant compartments (root, stem, and leaves) and developmental stages (emergence, growth, flowering, and maturation). Bacterial community composition and assembly processes were assessed using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. Null models that couple phylogenetic community composition and species distribution models were used to evaluate ecological assembly processes of bacterial communities. All models highlighted that the balance between the assembly process was modulated by compartments and developmental stages. Dispersal limitation dominated amongst the epiphytic communities and at the maturation stage. Homogeneous selection dominated assembly across plant compartments and development stages. Overall, both sets of models were mostly in agreement in predicting the prevailing assembly processes. Our results show, for the first time, that even though niche-based processes dominate in the plant environment, the relative influence of dispersal limitation in community assembly is important.

ABSTRACT

To date, few studies have examined the aerosol microbial content in Metro transportation systems. Here we characterised the aerosol microbial abundance, diversity and composition in the Athens underground railway system. PM10 filter samples were collected from the naturally ventilated Athens Metro Line 3 station "Nomismatokopio". Quantitative PCR of the 16S rRNA gene and high throughput amplicon sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region was performed on DNA extracted from PM10 samples. Results showed that, despite the bacterial abundance (mean = 2.82 × 105 16S rRNA genes/m3 of air) being, on average, higher during day-time and weekdays, compared to night-time and weekends, respectively, the differences were not statistically significant. The average PM10 mass concentration on the platform was 107 µg/m3. However, there was no significant correlation between 16S rRNA gene abundance and overall PM10 levels. The Athens Metro air microbiome was mostly dominated by bacterial and fungal taxa of environmental origin (e.g. Paracoccus, Sphingomonas, Cladosporium, Mycosphaerella, Antrodia) with a lower contribution of human commensal bacteria (e.g. Corynebacterium, Staphylococcus). This study highlights the importance of both outdoor air and commuters as sources in shaping aerosol microbial communities. To our knowledge, this is the first study to characterise the mycobiome diversity in the air of a Metro environment based on amplicon sequencing of the ITS region. In conclusion, this study presents the first microbial characterisation of PM10 in the Athens Metro, contributing to the growing body of microbiome exploration within urban transit networks. Moreover, this study shows the vulnerability of public transport to airborne disease transmission.

ABSTRACT

Pulmonary maturity of goats in their amniotic fluid was evaluated by Shor, Nile blue staining, and lamellar body count, as well as vitality and serum glucose and lactate levels in term and premature goats. Twenty-four kids were divided into three groups: group I: comprised of eight animals born by cesarean section with 149 days of gestation; group II: comprised of eight animals born by cesarean section with 143 days of gestation; and group III: comprised of eight animals born by cesarean section with 143 days of gestation, in which the does received intramuscular dexamethasone (20mg/goat) 36 hours prior to elective cesarean section. Shorr staining and lamellar body count have shown to be promising diagnostic methods for the assessment of lung maturity in goat neonates. However, the administration of dexamethasone to goats during antenatal period did not influence fetal maturity. It was verified that the physical evaluation of the patient, shortly after birth, is fundamental for the perception of vitality and viability of newborn goats.(AU)

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: X-linked hypo/anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (AED) is the most common form of AED. It is manifested in boys by involvement of the adnexa, teeth and sweat glands. In girls, signs are usually minor and may include linear lesions that are poorly known since they are reported infrequently or overlooked. Herein we report 3 cases. PATIENTS AND METHODS: There were two female patients who had been followed for several years, as well as the mother of one of the patients. Both of the younger patients had early diagnosis of DEA in childhood based on severe dental abnormalities, i.e. hypodontia and conical teeth, a typical facies, and cutaneous xerosis. The mother had milder signs and the diagnosis was made at the time of her daughter's diagnosis. All 3 had hypopigmented linear skin lesions (arms, buttocks or back), associated with a decrease in hair in one of them. Genetic analysis showed the R156H missense mutation at exon 3 of the EDA gene in all 3 patients. CONCLUSION: These hypopigmentation linear lesions, sometimes with hair loss, are well known to pediatric clinicians and dermatologists concerning early diagnosis of AED in girls, especially where the other signs are mild. Early diagnosis enables appropriate therapeutic management and genetic counseling regarding future pregnancy.

ABSTRACT

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna Pathfinder (LPF) main observable, labeled Δg, is the differential force per unit mass acting on the two test masses under free fall conditions after the contribution of all non-gravitational forces has been compensated. At low frequencies, the differential force is compensated by an applied electrostatic actuation force, which then must be subtracted from the measured acceleration to obtain Δg. Any inaccuracy in the actuation force contaminates the residual acceleration. This study investigates the accuracy of the electrostatic actuation system and its impact on the LPF main observable. It is shown that the inaccuracy is mainly caused by the rounding errors in the waveform processing and also by the random error caused by the analog to digital converter random noise in the control loop. Both errors are one order of magnitude smaller than the resolution of the commanded voltages. We developed a simulator based on the LPF design to compute the close-to-reality actuation voltages and, consequently, the resulting actuation forces. The simulator is applied during post-processing the LPF data.

ABSTRACT

This study describes the Eimeria Schneider, 1875 species that occurred in a lamb feedlot, as well as the dynamics of oocyst output in the environment and its correlation with daily weight gain (DWG) and climatic variables during nine weeks. One hundred and four lambs of various breeds and crossbreeds, at approximately 60 days old, were placed in a feedlot and submitted to periodic weighing and clinical and coprological evaluations. Fecal samples presenting more than 500 Eimeria spp. oocysts per gram (OPG) were separated for sporulation, and oocysts were identified at species level. Among evaluated oocysts, the following species were identified: E. parva, E. crandallis, E. ovinoidalis, E. weybridgensis, E. bakuensis, E. marsica, E. ahsata, E. granulosa, E. pallida and E. faurei. Eimeria crandallis was the most frequent one, being identified in 44 of the 58 evaluated samples, while E. parva was the more abundant in individual counts in most weeks. None of the animals presented clinical signs of eimeriosis and negative correlation coefficients were found for OPG vs DWG (-0.075) and OPG vs rainfall, as for OPG vs temperature this coefficient was positive. Animals shedding oocysts presented mixed infection, with up to seven species parasitizing the same lamb.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Desde tempos remotos, a pelagem é valorizada no agronegócio equestre.

Since ancient times, coat colors are valued in the equestrian business. The objective of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of coat colors and distribution among sexes in Brazil and also verify the frequency of this phenotype in reproduction to associate it with linear measurements and functionality. 44,437 definitive records were selected, and chi-square tests were used to evaluate coat colors and distribution between sexes, states and decades. By descriptive analysis the phenotypes breeding frequency and proportions in the offspring were obtained. Breeding and most used individuals were accounted by decade of birth and registration. Dun, chestnut and bay coat colors predominated, with 20,422; 11,941 and 5,256 animals, respectively. Dun represented 45.21% in Minas Gerais; 46.98% in Rio de Janeiro and 48.98% in São Paulo. For males and females there was a higher frequency of dun, chestnut and bay. The most frequent breeding colors were chestnut x dun, dun x dun and dun x bay. This is the first article to evaluate the coat colors in the Campolina population, dun being the most prevalent coat color in both sexes. The gait quality at the register is not associated with the coat color. This phenotype should be used with caution in selection.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to search for acute phase proteins that could indicate signs of maturation in the premature neonate by quantifying them in serum. Immunoglobulin A, ceruloplasmin, haptoglobin, acid glycoprotein, tranferrin, albumin, light and heavy chain immunoglobulin G were quantified, comparing the profile of proteinograms from term to preterm lambs submitted to different protocols that stimulate respiratory activity. Six groups were used: PN (n= 9): born from normal birth; CN (n= 7): born from caesarean section at normal time of gestation; CP (n= 6): born from premature cesarean without any type of treatment; DEX (n= 9) preterm whose mothers received prepartum dexamethasone; SURF (n= 6) preterm treated with surfactant; DEXSURF (n= 6): preterm treated with surfactant whose mothers received prepartum dexamethasone. The evaluations were performed immediately after birth (M 0), after 24 and 48 hours (M 24 and M 48). Samples were processed with sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Albumin, immunoglobulins, and serum total protein of the lambs were elevated, after colostrum ingestion. Higher serum transferrin values refer to a longer gestational period, and this protein may be used as a marker of neonatal maturation.(AU)

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Multi-modality imaging is a crucial component of cardiovascular (CV) fellowship training and requires knowledge of CV anatomy for interpretation. We hypothesized that hands-on anatomy education would improve the imaging interpretation skills of CV fellows. METHODS: The first-year CV fellowship class completed a hands-on cadaveric anatomy session correlated with clinical imaging. Fellows' ability to identify CV structures on cardiac imaging was assessed using a 30-question assessment tool administered at baseline and 1 week and 6 months post intervention. Advanced CV fellows (second or third year) who had not attended the session were also tested. Scores were expressed as median [interquartile range]. RESULTS: Among 9 first-year fellows, the majority reported no formal anatomy training since medical school (N = 7) and rated their knowledge of CV anatomy as fair or poor (N = 7) prior to the intervention. The median assessment score was higher 1 week after intervention vs baseline (24 [23-25] vs 19 [17-21]; P = .013) and remained higher than baseline at 6 months (26 [26-28] vs 19 [17-21]; P = .009). The 6-month post-intervention score for first-year fellows was not significantly different than that of senior fellows (n = 10) not exposed to the intervention (26 [26-28] vs 26 [23-27]; P = .434). CONCLUSIONS: Gross anatomy instruction improved first-year CV fellows' interpretation of CV imaging. Anatomic instruction may be a useful adjunct to multi-modality imaging education.

ABSTRACT

Safer by design (SBD) modifications of nanomaterials (NMs) have been pursued, aiming to maintain functionality and yet reduce hazard and support sustainable nanotechnology. The present case study involves copper oxide nanomaterials (CuO NMs) used in paint that have been surface modified by a SBD approach to particles coated with citrate (CIT-), ascorbate (ASC-), polyethylenimine (PEI+), and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). We assessed the effect of the 4 different surface modified (CIT, ASC, PVP and PEI) NMs plus the pristine non-coated (PRI NM) and a Cu salt (CuCl2), using the soil multispecies test system (samples at 28-56-84 days). Further, the species were tested individually, and Cu was measured in the test media (soil and soil solution) and organisms. There was a potential relationship with zeta potential, and toxicity of CuO NMs was as follows: -PEI (+28 mV) caused the least impact, -ASC and -CIT (-17 mV, -18 mV) the most, while PVP and PRI (-8 mV, -9 mV) caused an intermediate response. Differences were not explained by the contribution of soluble Cu. Coating interfered with the release of Cu2+ and/or the activation of copper regulators and detoxification mechanisms in the organisms, i.e. time to reach some kind of stability in organisms' uptake was shorter for -ASC and longer for -PVP during prolonged time. Thus, one of the main findings is that NMs hazard assessment requires long term testing to understand predicted effects across materials. Further, the coverage using a multispecies approach offers increased relevance and a more ecosystem qualified response.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Pyostomatitis vegetan (PV) is often associated with chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). OBSERVATION: Two cases of PV are reported. Case number 1 is a 66-year-old patient treated with infliximab for ulcerative colitis (UC). He presented himself with rapidly progressing crusty, whitish, ulcerated lesions on his lips. Diagnosis of PV was made after biopsy. Regression of oral lesions was favourable with local application of dermocorticoids while continuing infliximab treatment. Case number 2 is a 20-year-old patient treated with infliximab for Crohn's disease (CD). She had cheilitis and angular cheilitis. Diagnosis of PV was made after biopsy. The evolution was favourable after treating with topical dermocorticoids. DISCUSSION: PV is associated in 75% of the cases with IBD. The digestive check-up is systematic. Diagnostic delay is often noted. Topical dermocorticoids are the first line of therapy.
