ABSTRACT
Shockwaves are thought to activate regenerative and angiogenic pathways, providing a possible therapeutic benefit for patients with erectile dysfunction. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of low-intensity extracorporeal shockwave therapy energy density and pulse frequency. In May 2022, a systematic search of online databases was performed to identify randomized clinical trials related to low-intensity extracorporeal shockwave therapy in erectile dysfunction. Eligible articles compared low-intensity extracorporeal shockwave therapy to controls or sham procedures. A Bayesian framework with 200,000 Markov chains was performed. We included a total of 1272 patients from 18 studies. The energy flux density measured in joules included 0.09 mJ/mm2 (mean difference 3.2 IIEF [95% CrI 2.8, 3.6]), 0.15 mJ/mm2 (mean difference 4.9 IIEF [95% CrI 2.8, 7.2]) and 0.20 mJ/mm2 (mean difference 1.2 IIEF [95% CrI 0.11, 2.3]). Of these, 0.15 mJ/mm2 had the greatest ranking (SUCRA = 0.983) compared with placebo. When analyzed by pulse frequency, significant increases were found in 500 pulses/session (mean difference 2.5 IIEF [CrI 1.9, 3.2]), 1500 pulses/session (mean difference 4.6 IIEF [95% CrI 3.9, 5.4]) and > 3000 pulses/session (mean difference 3.1 IIEF [95% CrI 2.1, 4.2]). Of these, 1500 pulses/session had the highest SUCRA, at 0.996. Our network meta-analysis suggests that low-intensity extracorporeal shockwave therapy is an effective intervention for erectile dysfunction, as measured by increases in the IIEF-EF. Sessions featuring 1500 pulses and an energy flux density of 0.15 mJ/mm2 appear to be the most effective.
ABSTRACT
The objective of the study was to characterize adaptations of hepatic metabolism of dairy cows of two Holstein strains with varying proportions of grazing in the feeding strategy. Multiparous autumn calving Holstein cows of New Zealand (NZH) and North American (NAH) strains were assigned to a randomized complete block design with a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement with two feeding strategies that varied in the proportions of pasture and supplementation: maximum pasture and supplementation with a pelleted concentrate (MaxP) or fixed pasture and supplementation with a total mixed ration (FixP) from May through November of 2018. Hepatic biopsies were taken at - 45 ± 17, 21 ± 7, 100 ± 23 and 180 ± 23 days in milk (DIM), representing prepartum, early lactation, early mid-lactation and late mid-lactation. The effects of DIM, feeding strategy (FS), strain and their interactions were analyzed with mixed models using repeated measures. Cows of both strains had similar triglyceride levels, mitochondrial function and carnitine palmitoyltransferase activity in liver during lactation. However, there was an effect of DIM and FS as liver triglyceride was higher for the MaxP strategy at 21 DIM and both mitochondrial function and carnitine palmitoyltransferase activity in liver were lower for the MaxP strategy at 21 DIM. Hepatic mitochondrial function and acetylation levels were affected by the interaction between strain and feeding strategy as both variables were higher for NAH cows in the MaxP strategy. Mid-lactation hepatic gene expression of enzymes related to fatty acid metabolism and nuclear receptors was higher for NZH than NAH cows. This work confirms the association between liver triglyceride, decreased hepatic mitochondrial function and greater mitochondrial acetylation levels in cows with a higher inclusion of pasture and suggests differential adaptative mechanisms between NAH and NZH cows to strategies with varying proportions of grazing in the feeding strategy.

Soft ticks from the Ornithodoros genus are vectors of relapsing fever (RF) spirochetes around the world. In Mexico, they were originally described in the 19th century. However, few recent surveillance studies have been conducted in Mexico, and regions where RF spirochetes circulate remain vague. Here, the presence of soft ticks in populated areas was assessed in two sites from the Mexican states of Aguascalientes and Zacatecas. Argasidae ticks were collected, identified by morphology and mitochondrial 16S rDNA gene sequencing, and tested for RF borreliae. The specimens in both sites were identified as Ornithodoros turicata but no RF spirochetes were detected. These findings emphasize the need to update the distribution of these ticks in multiple regions of Mexico and to determine the circulation of RF borreliosis in humans and domestic animals.

Introduction: Gastric cancer (GC) is the first cause of death by neoplasm in Colombia, with 6,451 deaths in 2020. This pathology and its chronic manifestations pose a public health challenge. The objective is to estimate the disease burden of GC in Tunja, Boyacá, from 2010 to 2019. Materials and methods: An exploratory ecological study was conducted using disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) as the unit of measurement. The National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE) mortality databases and prevalence information from the Integrated Social Protection Information System (SISPRO) records were used. Deaths and GC cases were pooled and then adjusted to control for bias. Results: In 2010-2019, 34.2 DALYs were lost for every 1,000 people secondary to GC in Tunja, 30.5 were due to years lost due to premature death, and 3.72 were due to years lived with disability. DALYs due to premature death were found to exceed DALYs due to disability. Conclusion: The morbidity burden of GC from 2010 to 2019 for Tunja was similar to that of other cancers because of years of life lost due to premature death, so public health efforts should be made to increase early detection.
Introducción: el cáncer gástrico (CG) es la primera causa de muerte por neoplasia en Colombia, con 6451 muertes durante el 2020. Esta patología y sus manifestaciones crónicas plantean un desafío en la salud pública. El objetivo fue estimar la carga de enfermedad por CG en Tunja, Boyacá, durante los años 2010 a 2019. Metodología: se realizó un estudio ecológico exploratorio en el que se utilizó como unidad de medida los años de vida ajustados por discapacidad (AVAD). Se emplearon las bases de datos de mortalidad del Departamento Administrativo Nacional de Estadística (DANE) e información de la prevalencia desde los registros del Sistema Integrado de Información de la Protección Social (SISPRO). Las muertes y los casos de CG se agruparon y luego se ajustaron para controlar sesgos. Resultados: en el período 2010-2019 se perdieron 34,2 AVAD por cada 1000 personas secundarios a CG en Tunja, de los cuales 30,5 fueron debido a años perdidos por muerte prematura y 3,72 por años vividos con discapacidad. Se encontró que los AVAD por muerte prematura superan a los AVAD por discapacidad. Conclusión: la carga de morbilidad por CG en el período 2010 a 2019 para la ciudad de Tunja fue similar a la carga de otros cánceres y fue debido a años de vida perdidos por muerte prematura, motivo por el cual se deben realizar esfuerzos de salud pública para aumentar la detección temprana.
ABSTRACT
En este trabajo se presenta el listado actualizado de anfibios y reptiles de Ica. Las especies son comentadas, acompañadas de mapas de distribución y claves de identificación para reptiles y anfibios. Se recopiló información de registros en colecciones científicas, artículos científicos, informes de agencias gubernamentales de vida silvestre y bases de datos taxonómicas especializadas. Adicionalmente, entre los años 2019 y 2020 se realizaron evaluaciones de campo en zonas con vacíos de información. Se encontraron un total de 22 especies (anfibios 3 y reptiles 19). Los nuevos registros de reptiles para Ica incluyen la lagartija Liolaemus evaristoi y la serpiente Incaspis tachymenoides en la provincia de Chincha a 4200 y 3200 m de altitud respectivamente, la lagartija Stenocercus ornatissimus y la serpiente ciega Epictia tesselata en la provincia de Pisco a 3500 y 2800 m respectivamente. Los nuevos registros de anfibios incluyen a Pleurodema marmoratum en la provincia de Chincha (3900 m) y Telmatobius rimac en las provincias de Chincha y Palpa a 3900 y 2350 m respectivamente. La mayor riqueza y endemismos locales se encontraron en el desierto costero, mientras que, las ampliaciones de distribución y endemismos regionales se registraron en la vertiente occidental de los Andes. También, se observa que las familias Leptotyphlopidae y Viperidae, y los géneros Dicrodon, Stenocercus y Oxyrophus terminan su distribución en la vertiente occidental y la zona costera de los departamentos de Ica y Arequipa sin representantes en el extremo sur del Perú y Chile.
This paper presents the updated list of amphibians and reptiles of Ica. Species are commented, accompanied by distribution maps and identification keys for reptiles and amphibians. Information was collected from scientific collections, scientific articles, governmental wildlife agency reports, and specialized taxonomic database. Additionally, between 2019 and 2020, field surveys were carried out in areas with information gaps. A total of 22 species were found (amphibians 3 and reptiles 19). The new records of reptiles include the Liolaemus evaristoi lizard and the Incaspis tachymenoides snake from Chincha province at 4200 and 3200 m altitude respectively, the Stenocercus ornatissimus lizard and the blind snake Epictia tesselata from Pisco province at 3500 and 2800 m respectively. New amphibian records include Pleurodema marmoratum in Chincha province (3900 m) and Telmatobius rimac in Chincha and Palpa provinces at 3900 and 2350 m respectively. The greatest richness and local endemism were found in the coastal desert, while the expansion of distribution and regional endemism were recorded on the western slope of the Andes. Also, it is observed that the families Leptotyphlopidae and Viperidae, and the genera Dicrodon, Stenocercus and Oxyrophus are finishing their distribution in the western slope and the coastal zone of the departments of Ica and Arequipa without representatives in the extreme south of Peru and Chile.
ABSTRACT
This study explored the metabolic adaptions to grazing conditions of two Holstein genetic strains (GS; North American, NAH; New Zealand, NZH) in two feeding strategies (FS; restricted, P30, vs. maximised, PMAX, grazing). Four groups (NAH-P30, NZH-P30, NAH-PMAX and NZH-PMAX; n = 10 cows each) were compared between -45 and 180 days in milk (DIM). NZH cows had lower (p = 0.02) fat and protein corrected milk (FPCM) yield and a tendency for lower (p = 0.09) body condition score concomitantly with a trend (p < 0.07) for higher average plasma insulin and lower (p = 0.01) 3-methylhistidine (3MH) at -45 DIM than NAH. Plasma glucose tended to be affected by the triple interaction GS × FS × DIM (p = 0.06) as it was similar between NAH-P30 and NZH-P30, but higher (p ≤ 0.02) for NZH-PMAX than NAH-PMAX except at 21 DIM. The physiological imbalance index was affected by the GS × FS interaction (p < 0.01) as it was lower (p < 0.01) only for NZH-PMAX versus NAH-PMAX. NZH cows had higher (p = 0.01) plasma thiobarbituric acid reactive substances at -45 DIM and tended to have higher protein carbonyls (p = 0.10) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity (p = 0.06) on average, and had higher (p < 0.01) α-tocopherol during mid-lactation than NAH Regarding the FS, FPCM was similar (p = 0.12) among them, but PMAX cows had higher (p < 0.01) plasma non-esterified fatty acids and 3MH, and lower insulin (p < 0.01) than P30 at 100 DIM. PMAX cows showed higher average SOD activity (p = 0.01) and plasma α-tocopherol at 100 and 180 DIM (p < 0.01). Under grazing, NZH cows can have a better energy status and lower muscle mobilisation but a higher redox reactivity. Maximising grazing can worsen energy status and muscle mobilisation while improving antioxidant response with no effect on FPCM.

CRISPR-Cas systems are composed of repeated sequences separated by non-repeated sequences that are near genes coding for Cas proteins, which are involved in the function of these systems. Their function has been mostly related to "genetic immunity" against foreign genetic material, among other roles. Interest in them increased after their use in genetic manipulation was uncovered and surveys to find and classify them have been done in several bacterial groups. To determine the presence of these genetic elements in the Burkholderiaceae family members, a bioinformatic approach was followed. Attention in this family comes as it is formed by a great diversity of microorganisms that include opportunistic and true pathogens, and symbiotic and saprophytic organisms, among others. Results show that, in contrast to other bacterial groups, only 8.4% of family members harbor complete CRISPR-Cas systems and the rest either do not have one or have remains or sections of one. Analyses of the spacer sequences indicated that most of them have identity to sections of the same genomes they were found, while a few had identities with either plasmids or phages. The genus with the higher proportion of self-directed spacers is Ralstonia, and their possible roles are discussed. Most of the systems (60%) belong to the class I subtype I-E and a few to subtypes I-C (13.3%), I-F (18.3%), II-C (5%), IV-A (1.7%) and V-C (1.7%). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to uncover the CRISPR-Cas system for the whole Burkholderiaceae family.

Introducción. La tafenoquina fue aprobada en el 2018 por la Food and Drug Administration de Estados Unidos y, en el 2019, por la Therapeutic Goods Administration en Australia. Su administración en dosis única y su mecanismo de acción en las fases aguda y latente han sido objeto de estudio para cambiar el esquema de tratamiento de la malaria por Plasmodium vivax. Objetivo. Evaluar la evidencia científica disponible sobre la eficacia de la tafenoquina en la profilaxis y el tratamiento de la malaria por P. vivax, entre el 2009 y el 2019. Materiales y métodos. Se establecieron los descriptores MeSH y DeCS. Se utilizó la sintaxis ((Malaria Vivax) AND (tafenoquine) AND (prophylaxis)) OR [(Malaria Vivax) AND (tafenoquine) AND (relapse)] en las siguientes bases de datos: Pubmed, The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Clinical Trials (CENTRAL), ISIS Web of Science, Lilacs y Scopus. Los resultados obtenidos se sometieron a análisis crítico (matriz CASPE). El análisis cuantitativo se realizó utilizando la diferencia de riesgos en análisis de supervivencia (Kaplan-Meier) en los tres artículos finales. Resultados. Se sometieron tres estudios a metaanálisis (Llanos-Cuentas, 2014; Llanos- Cuentas, 2019, y Lacerda, 2019) para evaluar la eficacia del tratamiento con tafenoquina en comparación con primaquina. Se obtuvo una diferencia de riesgo global de 0,04 (IC95% 0-0,08; p=0,07). La tafenoquina no mostró inferioridad en la eficacia del tratamiento frente al esquema de primaquina. Conclusión. La tafenoquina es una alternativa que mejora el cumplimiento del tratamiento, lo que podría acercar a Colombia a las metas de la Estrategia Técnica Mundial contra la Malaria, 2016-2030.
Introduction: Tafenoquine was approved in 2018 by the Food and Drug Administration in the United States and in 2019 by the Therapeutic Goods Administration in Australia. Its administration in a single dose and its mechanism of action in the acute and latent phases of the disease have been studied to change the treatment regimen for Plasmodium vivax malaria. Objective: To evaluate the available scientific evidence of the efficacy of tafenoquine in prophylaxis and treatment between 2009 and 2019. Materials and methods: We established the MeSH and DeCS descriptors and we used the syntax ((Malaria Vivax) AND (tafenoquine) AND (prophylaxis)) OR [(Malaria Vivax) AND (tafenoquine) AND (relapse)] in the following databases: Pubmed, The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Clinical Trials (CENTRAL), ISIS Web of Science, Lilacs, and Scopus. The results obtained were subjected to critical analysis (CASPE matrix). The quantitative analysis was performed with risk differences in survival analysis (Kaplan Meier) in the final three articles. Results: Three studies underwent meta-analysis (Llanos-Cuentas, 2014; Llanos-Cuentas, 2019, and Lacerda, 2019) to evaluate the efficacy of the treatment with tafenoquine compared to primaquine. A global risk difference of 0.04 was obtained (95% CI: 0.00-0.08; p=0.07). Tafenoquine did not show inferiority in the efficacy of treatment compared to the primaquine scheme. Conclusion: Tafenoquine is a therapeutic alternative to primaquine that improves adherence, which could bring Colombia closer to the goals of the World Technical Strategy against Malaria 2016-2030.

Yam (Dioscorea spp.) is an important crop for smallholder farmers in the Northeast region of Brazil. Wherever yam is grown, diseases caused by yam mosaic virus (YMV) are prevalent. In the present study, the diversity of YMV infecting Dioscorea cayennensis-rotundata was analyzed. In addition, five species of Dioscorea (D. alata, D. altissima, D. bulbifera, D. subhastata, and D. trifida) commonly found in Brazil were analyzed using ELISA and high-throughput sequencing (HTS). YMV was detected only in D. cayennensis-rotundata, of which 66.7% of the samples tested positive in ELISA. Three YMV genome sequences were assembled from HTS and one by Sanger sequencing to group the sequences in a clade phylogenetically distinct from YMV from other origins. Temporal phylogenetic analyses estimated the mean evolutionary rate for the CP gene of YMV as 1.76 × 10-3 substitutions per site per year, and the time to the most recent common ancestor as 168.68 years (95% Highest Posterior Density, HPD: 48.56-363.28 years), with a most likely geographic origin in the African continent. The data presented in this study contribute to reveal key aspects of the probable epidemiological history of YMV in Brazil.

In pasture-based systems, there are nutritional and climatic challenges exacerbated across lactation; thus, dairy cows require an enhanced adaptive capacity compared with cows in confined systems. We aimed to evaluate the effect of lactation stage (21 vs. 180 days in milk, DIM) and Holstein genetic strain (North American Holstein, NAH, n = 8; New Zealand Holstein, NZH, n = 8) on metabolic adaptations of grazing dairy cows through plasma metabolomic profiling and its association with classical metabolites. Although 67 metabolites were affected (FDR < 0.05) by DIM, no metabolite was observed to differ between genetic strains while only alanine was affected (FDR = 0.02) by the interaction between genetic strain and DIM. However, complementary tools for time-series analysis (ASCA analysis, MEBA ranking) indicated that alanine and the branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) differed between genetic strains in a lactation-stage dependent manner. Indeed, NZH cows had lower (P-Tukey < 0.05) plasma concentrations of leucine, isoleucine and valine than NAH cows at 21 DIM, probably signaling for greater insulin sensitivity. Metabolic pathway analysis also revealed that, independently of genetic strains, AA metabolism might be structurally involved in homeorhetic changes as 40% (19/46) of metabolic pathways differentially expressed (FDR < 0.05) between 21 and 180 DIM belonged to AA metabolism.

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the mineral composition of soils and the bioactive compound content present in tomatoes grown in three regions of Mexico: the state of San Luis Potosí and Tultitlán and Cuautitlán Izcalli from the State of México: Total phenolic compounds, lycopene, and rutin were higher in the Tultitlán tomatoes and were associated with the thallium and magnesium content in the soil. Chlorogenic acid and quercetin in the fruit from C.IZC were associated with molybdenum and nickel found in the soil. A principal component analysis showed that cupper, iron, sodium, manganese, and lead in the soil had a relationship with the antioxidant activity (AA), resveratrol, and naringin in the fruit from SLP. In the soil from TUL, a relationship between thallium with lycopene and rutin with magnesium was found. Some elements in the soil were related to the bioactivities of the fruit.

Resumen Introducción el cáncer es una de las enfermedades más temidas por la humanidad y el tumor maligno de ovario no es la excepción. Se caracteriza por su alta agresividad y por presentar síntomas inespecíficos, además de no contar, hasta el momento, con pruebas de tamizaje que permitan una detección precoz, convirtiéndose en uno de los cánceres femeninos con alta mortalidad ocupando el séptimo lugar a nivel mundial. Objetivo Medir la prevalencia, mortalidad y la letalidad asociadas al cáncer de ovario entre 2009 a 2016 en la población colombiana. Método se realizó un estudio descriptivo, transversal, ecológico. A partir de una base de datos en el RIPS de SISPRO y DANE se seleccionaron las mujeres con diagnóstico de tumor maligno de ovario. Resultados se hallaron 36.798 mujeres con diagnóstico de cáncer de ovario, la edad media fue de 63 años con una prevalencia de 31,66 por 100.000 mujeres, en los departamentos de Antioquia, Santander, y Bogotá. Se estimó una tasa de mortalidad de 3,9 por 100.000 mujeres, predominio en educación básica primaria, y régimen de seguridad social contributivo. La letalidad fue de 15,75%. Conclusiones En Colombia la prevalencia, mortalidad y letalidad entre 2009 a 2016 presentó una tendencia al incremento, predominio en casadas, bajo nivel educativo y menor acceso a los servicios de salud. En virtud de lo anteriormente expuesto, se abre la posibilidad de establecer prioridades sanitarias, diseño de futuras estrategias en prevención de la enfermedad en salud pública, detención precoz y con la consecuente disminución de la mortalidad.

To the editor: Dengue, zika, and chikungunya outbreaks in Central and South America countries have presented significant challenges related to their prevention and control. From the virologic point of view, the possibility has been raised that the co-circulation of the three viruses could generate cross-protection between the three alphaviruses. In order to discuss this hypothesis it must be taken into account that Zika, dengue (DENV) and chikungunya viruses are closely related flaviviruses, with identical urban transmission and some immune interactions (1). Also, it is known that secondary DENV infections may be more severe than primary infections due to the antibody-dependent immune response (i.e., heterotypic sub-neutralizing antibodies that increase virus entry into poorly susceptible cells) (2,3). In addition, the recent introduction of Zika and chikungunya viruses in the Americas and the large-scale exposure of a uniformly unexposed population could affect subsequent transmission of dengue virus. This hypothesis has not been tested, largely because insufficient epidemiological data are available for the affected sites. However, in Salvador, Brazil, after the zika outbreak there was a significant decrease in the frequency of dengue cases (4). A similar situation was observed in Colombia, where the decrease in dengue cases following the zika and chikungunya outbreaks went from 334.1 cases per 100 000 people in 2015 to 90.7 cases per 100 000 in 2017 and 173,1 cases per 100 000 in 2018 (5). Although temporary associations do not prove causation, the strength and consistency of the observations suggest that infections with Zika virus and chikungunya virus could induce cross-protective immunity against dengue. Prospective studies are needed to fully assess the risk of dengue infection after exposure to Zika and chikungunya viruses and to determine whether the supposed cross-protection is long-lasting. Although observations support this hypothesis, the potential direct implications of this hypothesis for epidemiological surveillance, immunological research on pathogenesis and vaccine development require additional studies.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify the co-circulation patterns of three viruses (dengue, Zika, and -chikungunya) in Colombia from 2008 to 2018 by using notification reports provided to the national surveillance system. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted through a review of data for 2008 through 2018 from Colombia's Public Health Surveillance System (SIVIGILA). RESULTS: In 2015, when chikungunya was first detected, it had a higher incidence (1 359.0 cases per 100 000 persons) than did the two other diseases. In 2016, when the circulation of Zika virus was first found, the incidence was 296.4 cases per 100 000 persons; that incidence declined dramatically in the next two years. Between 2015 and 2018, there was a substantial decrease in the frequency of dengue circulation, with it going from 334.1 cases per 100 000 persons in 2015 to 90.7 cases per 100 000 in 2017 and 173.1 cases per 100 000 in 2018. CONCLUSIONS: The decrease in the number of dengue cases after co-circulation of the three viruses could indicate possible cross-protection. This finding should be further analyzed.

[RESUMEN]. Objetivo: Establecer las características de la cocirculación de tres virus (dengue, Zika y chikunguña) en Colombia desde el 2008 hasta el 2018. Para ello, en este estudio se han utilizado los informes de notificación que se proporcionan al sistema nacional de vigilancia. Métodos: Este estudio transversal se llevó a cabo mediante el análisis de los datos correspondientes al período 2008-2018 del Sistema Nacional de Vigilancia en Salud Pública de Colombia (SIVIGILA). Resultados: En el 2015, cuando se detectó por primera vez el chikunguña, este virus tuvo una incidencia mayor (1 359,0 casos por 100 000 personas) que las otras dos enfermedades. En el 2016, cuando se detectó por primera vez la circulación del virus del Zika, la incidencia fue de 296,4 casos por 100 000 personas; el número de casos disminuyó enormemente en los siguientes dos años. Entre el 2015 y el 2018, se observó una reducción sustancial en la frecuencia de la circulación del dengue: se pasó de 334,1 casos por 100 000 personas en el 2015 a 90,7 casos por 100 000 en el 2017 y a 173,1 casos por 100 000 en el 2018. Conclusiones: La disminución en el número de casos del dengue que siguió a la cocirculación de los tres virus podría indicar una posible protección cruzada. Este resultado debe analizarse en otros estudios.
[RESUMO]. Objetivo. Identificar padrões de co-circulação de três vírus (dengue, Zika e chikungunya) na Colômbia de 2008 a 2018 mediante análise de casos notificados ao sistema nacional de vigilância. Métodos. Estudo transversal realizado através de análise de dados de 2008 a 2018 obtidos do Sistema de Vigilância em Saúde Pública da Colômbia (SIVIGILA). Resultados. Em 2015, quando o chikungunya foi detectado pela primeira vez, sua incidência foi superior à das duas outras doenças (1.359,0 casos por 100,000 habitantes). Em 2016, quando a circulação do vírus zika foi detectada pela primeira vez, a incidência foi de 296,4 casos por 100,000 pessoas, decaindo drasticamente nos dois anos seguintes. Entre 2015 e 2018, houve uma redução importante na frequência de circulação do vírus dengue, de 334,1 casos por 100,000 habitantes em 2015 a 90,7 casos por 100,000 em 2017 e 173,1 casos por 100,000 em 2018. Conclusões. A redução do número de casos de dengue após o estabelecimento da co-circulação dos três vírus pode indicar proteção cruzada. Este achado requer análise adicional.

The role of neutralizing antibodies in Zika-induced Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) has not yet been investigated. We conducted a case-control study using sera from the 2016 Zika epidemic in Colombia to determine the neutralizing antibody activity against Zika virus (ZIKV) and dengue virus serotype 2 (DENV2). We observed increased neutralizing antibody titers against DENV2 in ZIKV-infected individuals compared with uninfected controls and higher titers to both ZIKV and DENV2 in ZIKV-infected patients diagnosed with GBS compared with non-GBS ZIKV-infected controls. These data suggest that high neutralizing antibody titers to DENV and to ZIKV are associated with GBS during ZIKV infection.

Maize evolution under domestication is a process that continues today. Case studies suggest that Mexican smallholder family farmers, known as campesinos, contribute importantly to this, but their significance has not been explicitly quantified and analysed as a whole. Here, we examine the evolutionary and food security implications of the scale and scope under which campesinos produce maize. We gathered official municipal-level data on maize production under rainfed conditions and identified campesino agriculture as occurring in municipalities with average yields of less than or equal to 3 t ha-1 Environmental conditions vary widely in those municipalities and are associated with a great diversity of maize races, representing 85.3% of native maize samples collected in the country. We estimate that in those municipalities, around 1.38 × 1011 genetically different individual plants are subjected to evolution under domestication each season. This implies that 5.24 × 108 mother plants contribute to the next generation with their standing genetic diversity and rare alleles. Such a large breeding population size also increases the total number of adaptive mutations that may appear and be selected for. We also estimate that campesino agriculture could potentially feed around 54.7 million people in Mexico. These analyses provide insights about the contributions of smallholder agriculture around the world.

The domestication syndrome of many plants includes changes in their mating systems. The evolution of the latter is shaped by ecological and genetic factors that are particular to an area. Thus, the reproductive biology of wild relatives must be studied in their natural distribution to understand the mating system of a crop species as a whole. Gossypium hirsutum (upland cotton) includes both domesticated varieties and wild populations of the same species. Most studies on mating systems describe cultivated cotton as self-pollinated, while studies on pollen dispersal report outcrossing; however, the mating system of upland cotton has not been described as mixed and little is known about its wild relatives. In this study we selected two wild metapopulations for comparison with domesticated plants and one metapopulation with evidence of recent gene flow between wild relatives and the crop to evaluate the mating system of cotton's wild-to-domesticated complex. Using classic reproductive biology methods, our data demonstrate that upland cotton presents a mixed mating system throughout the complex. Given cotton's capacity for outcrossing, differences caused by the domestication process in cultivated individuals can have consequences for its wild relatives. This characterization of the diversity of the wild relatives in their natural distribution, as well as their interactions with the crop, will be useful to design and implement adequate strategies for conservation and biosecurity.
