ABSTRACT
An important decision in planning for a new laboratory is the physical location in relation to other departments. In this article, the author examines the specimen flow, patient and information flow, and the surgical pathology and frozen section services, and explains how consideration of these areas in the planning stages determines the future efficiency of the department.

In 1979, a study was conducted at a 400-bed acute care hospital (name withheld) in an attempt to uncover potential employee problems and provide managers with feedback that could be used to remedy such problems. The author of this article explains the format of the hospital-wide study, and examines specifically how employees and supervisors in the Department of Laboratory Medicine reacted to the project.
