ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The risk of chronic diseases increases markedly with age and after menopause. An increase in bodily iron following menopause could contribute to this phenomenon of increased risk of chronic diseases. We aimed to investigate how various iron biomarkers change with advancing age, according to sex and menopausal status. METHODS: We enrolled community-dwelling individuals with available information on ferritin, transferrin, iron, hepcidin, and soluble transferrin receptor levels from the Prevention of Renal and Vascular Endstage Disease study. The association of the iron biomarkers with age, sex, and menopausal status was investigated with linear regression models. RESULTS: Mean (SD) age of the 5222 individuals (2680 women [51.3%], among whom 907 [33.8%] were premenopausal, 529 [19.7%] perimenopausal, and 785 [29.3%] postmenopausal), was 53.4 (12.0) years. Iron biomarkers showed a constant increase in women throughout their life course, in some cases at older ages surpassing values in men who, in turn, showed consistently higher levels of iron status compared to women in most age categories. Ferritin, hepcidin, and transferrin saturation levels were 3.03, 2.92, and 1.08-fold (all p < 0.001) higher in postmenopausal women compared to premenopausal. CONCLUSIONS: We found that iron accumulates differently depending on sex, age, and menopausal status. An increased iron status was identified in women, especially during and after menopause.

ABSTRACT

Swiss chard (Beta vulgaris L. var. cicla or flavescens) is a green leafy vegetable whose bioactive compounds have been studied due to its effects on health. We systematically reviewed the nutritional profile and bioactive composition of Swiss chard and reported their concentrations. Four main databases were searched for studies analyzing the chemical composition of Swiss chard. Screening, selection of articles, and data extraction were carried out by two independent reviewers. Twenty-eight articles of 1102 records identified by bibliographic search met our inclusion criteria for final analysis. We found a total of 192 chemical compounds categorized into 23 groups. The cicla variety was the most studied, and nutrients and phytochemicals were reported mainly on leaves. Betalains with 20% of the reported data, fats (16%), flavonoids (11%), non-flavonoid phenolics (11%), terpenes and derivatives (8%), carbohydrates (7%), and minerals (6%) were among the most reported categories. Swiss chard leaves have the highest content of fiber, sodium, magnesium, flavonoids, and vitamin C, while stems are high in potassium. Swiss chard should be considered a source of nutrients and phytochemicals, and further research is needed on identifying and quantifying other bioactive compounds and understanding their impact on health.

ABSTRACT

Direct, solid-state X-ray detectors based on organic single crystals are shown to operate at room temperature, in air, and at voltages as low as a few volts, delivering a stable and reproducible linear response to increasing X-ray dose rates, with notable radiation hardness and resistance to aging. All-organic and optically transparent devices are reported.

ABSTRACT

A method of producing self-emulsifying pellets by wet granulation of powder mixture composed of microcrystalline cellulose, lactose and nimesulide as model drug with a mixture containing mono- and di-glycerides, polisorbate 80 and water, in a 10-l high shear mixer has been investigated. The effects of the formulation variables on pellets characteristics were evaluated by mixtures experimental design and by a polynomial model, in order to describe the phenomenon, to verify eventual interactions among components of the mixture and to investigate the feasibility of scaling-up. After determination of size distribution, the pellets were characterised by scanning electron microscopy, dissolution and disintegration tests, and by in vitro absorption test Such an approach, applied to the development of a self-emulsifying system for nimesulide as poorly water-soluble model drug, resulted in different formulations with improved drug solubility and permeability characteristics. The data demonstrate that pellets composed of oil to surfactant ratio of 1:4 (w/w) presented improvement in performance in permeation experiments.
