ABSTRACT

The effects of humic acid water-soluble fertilizer on the growth and physiological characteristics of Bupleurum chinense seedlings(Zhongchai No.1) were studied by using a single factor experiment design. When the seedling age was 60 days, the humic acid water-soluble fertilizer was diluted 1 200 times(T1), 1 500 times(T2), 1 800 times(T3), and 2 100 times(T4) for seedling treatment, respectively, and water was used as the control(CK). The effects of different treatments on growth indexes, biomass accumulation, root activity, antioxidant enzyme activity, membrane lipid peroxidation, and photosynthetic characteristics of B. chinense seedlings were analyzed after 30 days. The results showed that compared with CK, stem height, leaf number, root diameter, and root length of the B. chinense seedlings under T3 treatment were significantly increased by 36.82%, 37.03%, 42.78%, and 22.38%, respectively. Root fresh weight, leaf fresh weight, root dry weight, and leaf dry weight under T3 treatment were significantly increased by 90.36%, 98.68%, 123.84%, and 104.38%, respectively. In addition, humic acid water-soluble fertilizer also enhanced TTC reducing activity of the root of B. chinense seedlings, inhibited malonaldehyde(MDA) content, increased superoxide dismutase(SOD), peroxidase(POD), and catalase(CAT) enzyme activities, improved chlorophyll content, and enhanced P_n, G_s, T_r, and other photosynthetic parameters. In conclusion, the application of humic acid water-soluble fertilizer diluted 1 800 times can significantly promote the growth of B. chinense seedlings, enhance root vitality, improve seedling stress resistance, and enhance photosynthesis. The results of this study can provide a theoretical basis for fertilization of B. chinense seedlings.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Neuropathic pain (NP) is a common type of pain in clinic. Due to the limited effect of drug treatment, many patients with NP are still troubled by this disease. In recent years, complementary and alternative therapy (CAT) has shown good efficacy in the treatment of NP. As the interest in CAT for NP continues to grow, we conducted a bibliometric study of publications on CAT treatment for NP. The aim of this study is to analyze the development overview, research hotspots and future trends in the field of CAT and NP through bibliometric methodology, so as to provide a reference for subsequent researchers. METHODS: Publications on CAT in the treatment of NP from 2002 to 2022 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection. Relevant countries, institutions, authors, journals, keywords, and references were analyzed bibliometrically using Microsoft Excel 2021, bibliometric platform, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace. RESULTS: A total of 898 articles from 46 countries were published in 324 journals, and they were contributed by 4455 authors from 1102 institutions. The most influential country and institution are China (n = 445) and Kyung Hee University (n = 63), respectively. Fang JQ (n = 27) and Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine (n = 63) are the author and journal with the most publications in this field. The clinical efficacy, molecular biological mechanisms and safety of CAT for NP are currently hot directions. Low back pain, postherpetic neuralgia, acupuncture, and herbal are the hot topics in CAT and NP in recent years. CONCLUSION: This study reveals the current status and hotspots of CAT for NP. The study also indicates that the effectiveness and effect mechanism of acupuncture or herbs for treating emotional problems caused by low back pain or postherpetic neuralgia may be a trend for future research.

ABSTRACT

Porcine circovirus (PCV) typically causes severe immune suppression in pigs, leading to mixed clinical infections with various pathogens that can cause significant harm to the pig industry. PCV has four subgenotypes, with PCV4 being an emerging virus that requires investigation due to its potential for epidemic outbreaks. Therefore, there is a need to develop a method that can detect all four PCV strains simultaneously. In this study, four pairs of specific primers and TaqMan probes were designed based on the conserved sequence of the PCV1-4 ORF2 gene to establish a PCV1-4 TaqMan multiplex real-time quantitative PCR method. The novel method was compared to six commercial testing kits for its efficacy. Then, a total of 595 mixed samples of spleen and lymph node collected from 12 districts in Chengdu from July to December 2021 were tested using the novel method. The results showed that the novel PCV1-4 TaqMan multiplex real-time quantitative PCR detection method has satisfied specificity, sensitivity, and repeatability. The positive rates of PCV1, PCV2, and PCV3 in Chengdu were 2.18%, 31.60%, and 15.29%, respectively, while no positive PCV4 was detected. The mixed infection rate of PCV2 and PCV3 was 5.21%. Our novel method may be as a potential method for PCV1-4 detection. Currently, PCV2 is the main epidemic PCV subtype in Chengdu, while the potential threat of PCV4 should also be considered.

ABSTRACT

CONTEXT: Aquaporin 7 (AQP7) is selectively expressed in decidualised endometrial stromal cells (ESCs) of mice surrounding the embryonic implantation sites. However, the roles of AQP7 and the underlying mechanism that regulates AQP7 expression in endometrial decidualisation after implantation are still unclear. AIMS: This study aimed to investigate the role of the PI3K-Akt pathway in regulating the expression of AQP7 in ESCs and decidualisation. METHODS: Primary ESCs of pregnant mice were isolated to establish in vitro decidualisation models. PI3K inhibitor LY294002 was added to the decidualisation models, then AQP7 expression, changes in decidualised ESC morphology and expression of decidualisation marker molecules were examined. KEY RESULTS: AQP7 knockdown reduced the proliferation and differentiation of ESCs with in vitro induced decidualisation. Furthermore, when the activity of PI3K was inhibited by LY294002, the expression of AQP7 in decidualised ESCs was decreased and both the proliferation and differentiation of ESCs were significantly reduced. CONCLUSIONS: This indicates that AQP7 is a key molecule involved in endometrial decidualisation and the expression of AQP7 is upregulated through activation of the PI3K-Akt pathways, which promotes the proliferation and differentiation of the ESCs, thus affecting occurrence of decidualisation. IMPLICATIONS: This study may provide a new biomarker for the diagnosis of infertility and a new drug target for the prevention and treatment of infertility.

ABSTRACT

Background: Back muscle injury is the most common illness involved in aged people. Muscular satellite cells, playing a key role in the muscle repairing process, are gradually losing their regenerative ability with aging, which attenuates the injured muscle repairing process. Electroacupuncture at Weizhong acupoint has been widely used in the treatment of young and aged patients with back muscle damage. Its efficacy has been proven by a randomized double-blind placebo clinical trial. However, the rehabilitation mechanisms are largely unknown. This study will explore the possible mechanisms associated with electroacupuncture at the Weizhong acupoint (BL 40) promoting muscle repairing ability. Method: A total of 58 male and female Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into a younger group (4-month-old) and an aged group (16-month-old), younger and aged rats were further divided as a sham, injured, injured rats treated with electroacupuncture at Weizhong point or treated with Non-Weizhong point groups. The back muscle injury model was produced in rats as a previously described method with modification. Furthermore, Weizhong acupoints underwent electroacupuncture treatment with 15 V magnitude, 2 Hz/10 Hz frequency density, 1.0 mA current intensity, and 10 min each day for 10 consecutive days using HANS's electroacupuncture apparatus. After the last treatment, the paravertebral muscles and serum of all animals were undergone histological, immunohistochemistry, and flow cytometry analysis. Serum levels of Creatine Kinase (CK) and proinflammatory cytokine, interleukin 6 (IL-6), were measured separately by using ELISA kit. Results: Electroacupuncture of Weizhong (BL 40) acupoints significantly attenuated back muscle damage in both young and aged rats, increasing PAX7 (a marker of muscle satellite cells) and MYOD (major marker of myoblasts) cells, simultaneously, reducing serum proinflammatory cytokines, IL-6, and downregulation of p38 MAPK signaling in aged muscular satellite cells. Conclusion: Our studies suggest that electroacupuncture of Weizhong (BL 40) acupoints can restore aged back muscular satellite cells and their regeneration capacity. These suggested electroacupuncture may be a potential means of promoting rehabilitation for muscular injury in aged patients.

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality. HCC-targeted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an effective noninvasive diagnostic method that involves targeting clinically-related HCC biomarkers, such as alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) or glypican-3 (GPC3), with iron oxide nanoparticles. However, in vivo studies of HCC-targeted MRI utilize single-target iron oxide nanoprobes as negative (T2) contrast agents, which might weaken their future clinical applications due to tumor heterogeneity and negative MRI contrast. Ultra-small superparamagnetic iron oxide (USPIO) nanoparticles (approximately 5 nm) are potential optimal positive (T1) contrast agents. We previously verified the efficiency of AFP/GPC3-double-antibody-labeled iron oxide MR molecular probe in vitro. AIM: To validate the effectiveness of a bi-specific probe in vivo for enhancing T1-weighted positive contrast to diagnose the early-stage HCC. METHODS: The single- and double-antibody-conjugated 5-nm USPIO probes, including anti-AFP-USPIO (UA), anti-GPC3-USPIO (UG), and anti-AFP-USPIO-anti-GPC3 (UAG), were synthesized. T1- and T2-weighted MRI were performed on day 10 after establishment of the orthotopic HCC mouse model. Following intravenous injection of U, UA, UG, and UAG probes, T1- and T2-weighted images were obtained at 12, 12, and 32 h post-injection. At the end of scanning, mice were euthanized, and a histologic analysis was performed on tumor samples. RESULTS: T1- and T2-weighted MRI showed that absolute tumor-to-background ratios in UAG-treated HCC mice peaked at 24 h post-injection, with the T1- and T2-weighted signals increasing by 46.7% and decreasing by 11.1%, respectively, relative to pre-injection levels. Additionally, T1-weighted contrast in the UAG-treated group at 24 h post-injection was enhanced 1.52-, 2.64-, and 4.38-fold compared to those observed for single-targeted anti-GPC3-USPIO, anti-AFP-USPIO, and non-targeted USPIO probes, respectively. Comparison of U-, UA-, UG-, and UAG-treated tumor sections revealed that UAG-treated mice exhibited increased stained regions compared to those observed in UG- or UA-treated mice. CONCLUSION: The bi-specific T1-positive contrast-enhanced MRI probe (UAG) for HCC demonstrated increased specificity and sensitivity to diagnose early-stage HCC irrespective of tumor size and/or heterogeneity.

BACKGROUND: Currently, the clinicopathological characteristics and prognosis of myoepithelial carcinoma of salivary gland (MC-SG) have not been defined well. The present study aimed to describe the clinicopathological characteristics and prognosis of MC-SG patients. METHODS: The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database was searched for all patients diagnosed with MC-SG between 1991 and 2016. The Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank tests were used to evaluate the survival. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analysis were used to identify prognostic biomarkers for overall survival (OS) and disease-specific survival (DSS). Furthermore, a prognostic nomogram was established, and its predictive accuracy and discriminative ability were determined using the concordance index (C-index). RESULTS: In total, 245 patients diagnosed with MC-SG were identified. The median OS was 152.0 months, with 3-, 5-, and 10-year survival rates of 79.8%, 69.2%, and 50.3%. The 3-, 5-, and 10-year DSS rates were 82.5%, 77.1%, and 61.9%, respectively. Regarding the treatment regimen, most patients (92.2%) underwent surgery, and 103 patients (42.4%) received postoperative radiotherapy. Surgery could significantly prolong OS and DSS (p < .05), but postoperative radiotherapy did not significantly prolong OS and DSS when compared with individuals receiving surgery alone (p > .05). Multivariate Cox analysis revealed that T category (T4), lymph node metastasis (N2), distant metastasis (M1), and poor differentiation were independent unfavorable prognostic factors for OS and DSS. Older age (>62 years) was also independently associated with OS. In addition, the C-index for the established OS- and DSS-specific nomogram was 0.80 (95% CI: 0.72-0.88) and 0.82 (95% CI: 0.73-0.90). CONCLUSION: Age, tumor invasion, metastases, and pathological grade were independently associated with prognosis of MC-SG patients, and the prognostic nomogram of this rare disease was established.

Beetles possess a set of highly modified and tanned forewings, elytra, which are lightweight yet rigid and tough. Immediately after eclosion, the elytra are initially thin, pale and soft. However, they rapidly expand and subsequently become hardened and often dark, resulting from both pigmentation and sclerotization. Here, we identified changes in protein composition during the developmental processes of the elytra in the Japanese rhinoceros beetle, Trypoxylus dichotomus. Using mass spectrometry, a total of 414 proteins were identified from both untanned and tanned elytra, including 31 cuticular proteins (CPs), which constitute one of the major components of insect cuticles. Moreover, CPs containing Rebers and Riddiford motifs (CPR), the most abundant CP family, were separated into two groups based on their expression and amino acid sequences, such as a Gly-rich sequence region and Ala-Ala-Pro repeats. These protein groups may play crucial roles in elytra formation at different time points, likely including self-assembly of chitin nanofibers that control elytral macro and microstructures and dictate changes in other properties (i.e., mechanical property). Clarification of the protein functions will enhance the understanding of elytra formation and potentially benefit the development of lightweight materials for industrial and biomedical applications. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: The beetle elytron is a light-weight natural bio-composite which displays high stiffness and toughness. This structure is composed of chitin fibrils and proteins, some of which are responsible for architectural development and hardening. This work, which involves insights from molecular biology and materials science, investigated changes in proteomic, architectural, and localized mechanical characteristics of elytra from the Japanese rhinoceros beetle to understand molecular mechanisms driving elytra development. In the present study, we identified a set of new protein groups which are likely related to the structural development of elytra and has potential for new pathways for processing green materials.

BACKGROUND: The features and prognosis of adenosquamous carcinoma (ASC) in oral and maxillofacial region have not thoroughly investigated, the purpose of this study is to describe clinicopathologic characteristics, treatment, and prognostic factors of this disease. METHODS: The data of 276 patients diagnosed with ASC in oral and maxillofacial region between 1975 and 2016 were collected from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. The prognostic factors influencing overall survival (OS) and disease-specific survival (DSS) were identified by the Kaplan-Meier analysis and Cox regression analysis. The nomograms for OS and DSS were constructed to predict the prognosis of these patients. RESULTS: Of 276 included patients, 62.7% were male and 37.3% were female, with an average age at diagnosis of 63.5 years. The most common primary site is oral cavity (170/276), followed by salivary gland (106/276). The 3-, and 5-year OS of patients with ASC in oral and maxillofacial region were 49.0% and 38.9%, while the 3-, and 5-year DSS were 67.7%, and 60.4%, respectively. Patients who underwent surgery had longer OS (mOS: 58 m vs. 8 m) and DSS (mDSS: 193 m vs. 18 m) than those who did not. Age, AJCC-T/N/M category as well as surgery were independently associated with OS. Advanced T stage, distant metastases, and surgery were independent factors for DSS. The prognostic nomograms for OS and DSS were constructed, and the C-indexes were 0.71 (95% CI 0.66-0.76) and 0.76 (95% CI 0.67-0.85), respectively. CONCLUSION: Surgery was the favorable prognostic factor for both OS and DSS among patients with ASC in oral and maxillofacial region.

We analyzed the growth dynamic and bolting rate of Angelica sinensis, soil quality and enzyme activities and weed density and control effect in a field experiment under different mulching patterns, to provide theoretical basis for the application of plastic film in genuine producing area of A. sinensis. The planting patterns were conducted as hole seeding under ridging with plastic-film mulching (LS), trenching and slant planting under film-side cultivation (MC) and trenching and slant planting in open field (LD). Our results showed that, 1) compared with LD, soil organic matter content in top layer under the treatments of LS and MC was increased by 4.4% and 14.3%, respectively, with that under MC being statistically significant. Soil bulk density was significantly decreased by 11.6% and 8.5%, while pH was significantly decreased by 4.6% and 1.7%. The activities of soil sucrase, phosphatase and urease were significantly increased by the two mulching methods, but that of catalase was inhibited to a certain extent. 2) Mulching film improved the speed of returning green after transplanting, the early bolting rate, and the individual medicinal quality of A. sinensis. MC showed the fastest, the most uniform, and the highest greening rate. LS bolting rate was the highest, and the fresh mass of MC and LS was significantly increased by 20.4% and 58.4%, respectively. 3) Weed density under the treatment of MC and LS was significantly reduced by 34.0% and 25.8%. Compared with LS, MC significantly increased the control effect of plant and fresh mass by 21.7% and 63.4%, respectively. In conclusion, film cultivation methods could improve the environment for root growth, reduce weed density, improve weed control effect, and promote growth process and substance accumulation, but could promote the bolting of A. sinensis in early phase.

Sustainability assessment using a life-cycle approach is indispensable to contemporary bioprocess development. This assessment is particularly important for early-stage bioprocess development. As early-stage investigations of bioprocesses involve the evaluation of their ecological and socioeconomic effects, they can be adjusted more effectively and improved towards sustainability, thereby reducing environmental risk and production costs. Early-stage sustainability assessment is an important precautionary practice and, despite limited data, a unique opportunity to determine the primary impacts of bioprocess development. To this end, a simple and robust method was applied based on the standardized life-cycle sustainability assessment methodology and commercially available datasets. In our study, we elaborated on the yeast-based citric acid production process with Yarrowia lipolytica assessing 11 different substrates in different process modes. The focus of our analysis comprised both cultivation and down-stream processing. According to our results, the repeated batch raw glycerol based bioprocess alternative showed the best environmental performance. The second- and third-best options were also glycerol-based. The least sustainable processes were those using molasses, chemically produced ethanol, and soy bean oil. The aggregated results of environmental, economic, and social impacts display waste frying oil as the best-ranked alternative. The bioprocess with sunflower oil in the batch mode ranked second. The least favorable alternatives were the chemically produced ethanol-, soy oil-, refined glycerol-, and molasses-based citric acid production processes. The scenario analysis demonstrated that the environmental impact of nutrients and wastewater treatment is negligible, but energy demand of cultivation and down-stream processing dominated the production process. However, without energy demand the omission of neutralizers almost halves the total impact, and neglecting pasteurization also considerably decreases the environmental impact.

High Rate Algae Ponds (HRAPs) are a promising technology for the treatment of municipal wastewater in locations with sufficient space and solar radiation. Algae-based processes do not require aeration, and thus have the potential to be less energy-intensive than activated sludge processes. We used a combination of LCA and LCCA analysis to evaluate the sustainability of HRAP systems, using data from the construction and operation of two demonstration-scale systems in Almería and Cádiz, Spain. As a reference for comparison, we used data from an activated sludge-based Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) treatment system in operation in Leppersdorf, Germany, which has comparable removal rates for a similar inflow. We focused solely on the actual wastewater treatment aspect of these technologies, excluding sludge treatment from this analysis. Based on our analysis, the current HRAP technology is more energy-efficient than activated sludge-based SBRs and requires only 22% of its electricity consumption. In addition, HRAP is more advantageous both economically (0.18 €/m3 versus 0.26 €/m3) and environmentally, with both lower global warming and eutrophication potentials (146.27 vs. 458.27 × 10-3 kg CO2 equiv./m3; 126.14 vs. 158.01 × 10-6 kg PO4 equiv./m3). However, the Net Environmental Benefit of SBR was slightly more favorable than of HRAP because of the higher removal rate for nutrients of SBR.

Oxidative stress contributes to the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases. With the aim to find reagents that reduce oxidative stress, a phage display library was screened for peptides mimicking α2,6-sialyllactose (6'-SL), which is known to beneficially influence neural functions. Using Sambucus nigra lectin, which specifically binds to 6'-SL, we screened a phage display library and found a peptide comprising identical sequences of 12 amino acids. Mimetic peptide, reverse peptide and scrambled peptide were tested for inhibition of 6'-SL binding to the lectin. Indeed, lectin binding to 6'-SL was inhibited by the most frequently identified mimetic peptide, but not by the reverse or scrambled peptides, showing that this peptide mimics 6'-SL. Functionally, mimetic peptide, but not the reverse or scrambled peptides, increased viability and expression of neural cell adhesion molecule L1 in SK-N-SH human neuroblastoma cells, and promoted survival and neurite outgrowth of cultured mouse cerebellar granule neurons challenged by H2O2-induced oxidative stress. The combined results indicate that the 6'-SL mimetic peptide promotes neuronal survival and neuritogenesis, thus raising hopes for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) ranks second in terms of cancer mortality worldwide. Molecular magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) targeting HCC biomarkers such as alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) or glypican-3 (GPC3) offers new strategies to enhance specificity and help early diagnosis of HCC. However, the existing iron oxide nanoparticle-based MR molecular probes singly target AFP or GPC3, which may hinder their efficiency to detect heterogeneous micro malignant HCC tumors < 1 cm (MHCC). We hypothesized that the strategy of double antibody-conjugated iron oxide nanoparticles which simultaneously target AFP and GPC3 antigens may potentially be used to overcome the tumor heterogeneity and enhance the detection rate for MRI-based MHCC diagnosis. AIM: To synthesize an AFP/GPC3 double antibody-labeled iron oxide MRI molecular probe and to assess its impact on MRI specificity and sensitivity at the cellular level. METHODS: A double antigen-targeted MRI probe for MHCC anti-AFP-USPIO-anti-GPC3 (UAG) was developed by simultaneously conjugating AFP andGPC3 antibodies to a 5 nm ultra-small superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticle (USPIO). At the same time, the singly labeled probes of anti-AFP-USPIO (UA) and anti-GPC3-USPIO (UG) and non-targeted USPIO (U) were also prepared for comparison. The physical characterization including morphology (transmission electron microscopy), hydrodynamic size, and zeta potential (dynamic light scattering) was conducted for each of the probes. The antigen targeting and MRI ability for these four kinds of USPIO probes were studied in the GPC3-expressing murine hepatoma cell line Hepa1-6/GPC3. First, AFP and GPC3 antigen expression in Hepa1-6/GPC3 cells was confirmed by flow cytometry and immunocytochemistry. Then, the cellular uptake of USPIO probes was investigated by Prussian blue staining assay and in vitro MRI (T2-weighted and T2-map) with a 3.0 Tesla clinical MR scanner. RESULTS: Our data showed that the double antibody-conjugated probe UAG had the best specificity in targeting Hepa1-6/GPC3 cells expressing AFP and GPC3 antigens compared with single antibody-conjugated and unconjugated USPIO probes. The iron Prussian blue staining and quantitative T2-map MRI analysis showed that, compared with UA, UG, and U, the uptake of double antigen-targeted UAG probe demonstrated a 23.3% (vs UA), 15.4% (vs UG), and 57.3% (vs U) increased Prussian stained cell percentage and a 14.93% (vs UA), 9.38% (vs UG), and 15.3% (vs U) reduction of T2 relaxation time, respectively. Such bi-specific probe might have the potential to overcome tumor heterogeneity. Meanwhile, the coupling of two antibodies did not influence the magnetic performance of USPIO, and the relatively small hydrodynamic size (59.60 ± 1.87 nm) of double antibody-conjugated USPIO probe makes it a viable candidate for use in MHCC MRI in vivo, as they are slowly phagocytosed by macrophages. CONCLUSION: The bi-specific probe presents enhanced targeting efficiency and MRI sensitivity to HCC cells than singly- or non-targeted USPIO, paving the way for in vivo translation to further evaluate its clinical potential.

ABSTRACT

Renal transplantation is one of the renal replacement therapies for patients with end-stage renal disease. The number of patients who receive renal transplantation is continuously increasing, and the use of immunosuppressive drugs that are essential after transplantation requires continuous nutritional management. In the early post-transplantation period, sufficient supply of nutrition in consideration of the increase in metabolic demand is necessary. The long-term nutritional management after transplantation requires nutritional interventions to prevent obesity, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, diabetes, and osteoporosis, which are the adverse effects associated with the use of immunosuppressive drugs. Department of Dietetics in Samsung Medical Center has been engaging with patients to conduct them about initial nutritional assessment and reassessment, description of therapeutic diet, nutrition education for kidney transplantation, and follow-up education after discharge. Nutritional intervention of kidney transplant patients should be carried out according to the post-transplantation period and the nutritional status of the patient. It is necessary to perform patient management according to the planned process.

ABSTRACT

Caprolactam, used in manufacturing polyamide (PA) 6, may threaten human health. Here, PA 6 sheets were produced by using a twin-screw extruder to evaluate its safety. Caprolactam migration concentrations from the PA 6 sheets into food simulants were evaluated according to the standard migration test conditions under the Korean Food Standards Codex (KFSC). Concentrations were investigated under various food simulants (distilled water, 4% acetic acid, 20 and 50% ethanol, and heptane) and storage conditions (at 25, 60, and 95 °C). Caprolactam migration concentrations into food simulants were determined as follows: 4% acetic acid (0.982 mg/L), distilled water (0.851 mg/L), 50% ethanol (0.624 mg/L), 20% ethanol (0.328 mg/L), and n-heptane (not detected). Migrations were determined to be under the regulatory concentration (15 mg/L) according to the KFSC test conditions. Taken together, these results verified that the standard migration test conditions by KFSC were reliable to evaluate the safety of PA 6.

With Bupleurum smithii var. parvifolium and B. scorzonerifolium as test objects, in order to provide a theoretical basis for the introduction and domestication of B. smithii var. parvifolium, the growth and development dynamics of seedlings, biomass accumulation, the content of malonaldehyde(MDA), the activity of antioxidase such as SOD, POD, CAT and APX between them were comparatively analyzed by direct sowing culture in the open field. The results indicated that the morphological index and the biomass accumulation of B. smithii var. parvifolium such as root diameter, root length, plant height and leaf number were inferior to B. scorzonerifolium, the antioxidase SOD and POD activity of B. smithii var. parvifolium was significantly inferior to B. scorzonerifolium (P<0.05), the antioxidase CAT and APX activity of B. smithii var. parvifolium was inferior to B. scorzonerifolium but the difference wasn't significant, while MDA content was superior to B. scorzonerifolium(P<0.05). Thus, compared with cultivated B. scorzoneri folium, the plant growth velocity of wild B. smithii var. parvifolium was relatively slower and its resistance was relatively weaker after introduction and domestication.

BACKGROUND: The use of a mobile health care application, the delivery of health care or health care-related services through the use of portable devices, to manage functional loss, treatment-related toxicities, and impaired quality of life in cancer patients during chemotherapy through supervised self-management has been increasing. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy and feasibility of comprehensive mobile health care using a tailored rehabilitation program for colorectal cancer patients undergoing active chemotherapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 102 colorectal cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy underwent 12 weeks of smartphone aftercare through provision of a mobile application and wearable device that included a rehabilitation exercise program and information on their disease and treatment. The grip strength test, 30-second chair stand test, 2-minute walk test, amount of physical activity (International Physical Activity Questionnaire short-form), quality of life (European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire C30), and nutritional status (Patient-generated Subjective Global Assessment) were assessed and measured at baseline, at mid-intervention (6 weeks), and at completion of the intervention (12 weeks). The rehabilitation exercise intensity was adjusted by the test results at every assessment and through real-time communication between the patients and clinicians. RESULTS: Of the 102 patients, 75 completed all 12 weeks of the smartphone aftercare rehabilitation program. The lower extremity strength (P < .001) and cardiorespiratory endurance (P < .001) was significantly improved. Fatigue (P < .007) and nausea/vomiting (P < .040) symptoms were significantly relieved after the program. CONCLUSION: A tailored rehabilitation exercise program provided through a comprehensive mobile health care application was effective in improving patients' physical capacity and treatment-related symptoms even during active chemotherapy.

ABSTRACT

The application of spent yeast for biogas production has been studied only in the context of breweries so far. This study is focused on the anaerobic digestion of concentrated yeast biomass (CYB), being a by-product of citric acid biosynthesis. Two experimental set-ups were used in order to test CYB as a mono-substrate and co-substrate for closing the loop in accordance with the 'bioeconomy' approach. The results show that CYB allows for obtaining a high biogas yield, with a maximum of 1.45 m3 N/kgVS produced when CYB was used as a mono-substrate. The average methane concentration was 66 ± 4%. However, anaerobic digestion of CYB alone was difficult to perform because of a tendency for over-acidification, meaning that the maximum possible organic loading rate was 1 kg/(m3*d). Repeated clogging of tubes with coagulated biomass also disturbed continuous feeding. In contrast, the co-digestion of CYB with waste frying fat at a ratio of 1:20 showed stable operation during a 70-day fermentation period. The biogas yield using the substrate mixture was 1.42 m3/kgVS at an organic loading rate of 2 kg/(m3*d). The methane concentration reached 67 ± 4% and the acetate concentration did not exceed 30 mg/L during the entire fermentation.
