ABSTRACT

This work uses isopropyl alcohol (IPA) to develop a photoresist. IPA dissolves the photoresist that is not exposed to UV light, and swells the photoresist that is exposed to UV light. The swelling of the photoresist distorts the split-ring resonators (SRRs). The distorted SRRs have a larger loop length, smaller line width, and smaller split gap than undistorted SRRs. The change in the dimensions of the SRRs is caused by the extension of the SRR arms in their longitudinal directions. The resonance frequency of the distorted SRRs is smaller than that of the undistorted SRRs, and the resonance frequency decreases with the development time. The resonance frequency of the distorted SRRs depends on not only their dimensions, but also the bending of their arms. The distorted SRRs in this work have a frequency tuning range with a maximum width of 0.13 THz. The method that is proposed herein uses IPA to fabricate passively tunable terahertz metamaterials, which exhibit the advantages of high reliability, low cost, and ease of fabrication.

ABSTRACT

Carbon nanotube (CNT) emitters on buckypaper were activated by laser treatment and their field emission properties were investigated. The pristine buckypapers and CNT emitters' height, diameter, and spacing were characterized through optical analysis. The emitter spacing directly impacted the emission results when the laser power and treatment times were fixed. The increasing emitter density increased the enhanced field emission current and luminance. However, a continuous and excessive increase of emitter density with spacing reduction generated the screening effect. As a result, the extended screening effect from the smaller spacing eventually crippled the field emission effectiveness. Luminance intensity and uniformity of field emission suggest that the highly effective buckypaper will have a density of 2500 emission spots cm(-2), which presents an effective field enhancement factor of 3721 and a moderated screening effect of 0.005. Proper laser treatment is an effective post-treatment process for optimizing field emission, luminance, and durability performance for buckypaper cold cathodes.

ABSTRACT

A homemade microwave plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition method was used to grow a multiwalled carbon nanotube between two nickel catalyst electrodes. To investigate the transport properties and electron scattering mechanism of this interconnection (of approximately fixed length and fixed diameter), we carried out a model analysis of temperature dependence of resistivity. To explain the abnormal behavior of the negative temperature coefficient of resistivity in our experimental results, we then employed theories, such as hopping conductivity theory and variable range hopping conductivity theory, to describe resistivity in the high- and low-temperature ranges, respectively. Further, the grain boundary scattering model is also provided to fit the entire measured curve of temperature dependence of resistivity.
