ABSTRACT

We have studied the effect of doping of both magnetic (Co) and nonmagnetic (Mg) ions at the Cu site on phase transition in polycrystalline α-Cu2V2O7through structural, magnetic, and electrical measurements. X-ray diffraction reveals that Mg doping triggers an onset ofα- toß-phase structural transition in Cu2-xMgxV2O7above a critical Mg concentrationxc= 0.15, and both the phases coexist up tox= 0.25. Cu2V2O7possesses a non-centrosymmetric crystal structure and antiferromagnetic ordering along with a non-collinear spin structure in theαphase, originated from the microscopic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction between the neighboring Cu spins. Accordingly, a weak ferromagnetic (FM) behavior has been observed up tox= 0.25. However, beyond this concentration, Cu2-xMgxV2O7exhibits complex magnetic properties. A clear dielectric anomaly is observed in α-Cu2-xMgxV2O7around the magnetic transition temperature, which loses its prominence with the increase in Mg doping. The analysis of experimental data shows that the magnetoelectric coupling is nonlinear, which is in agreement with the Landau theory of continuous phase transitions. Co doping, on the other hand, initiates a sharpαtoßphase transition around the same critical concentrationxc= 0.15 in Cu2-xCoxV2O7but the FM behavior is very weak and can be detected only up tox= 0.10. We have drawn the magnetic phase diagram which indicates that the rate of suppression in transition temperature is the same for both types of doping, magnetic (Co) and nonmagnetic (Zn/Mg).

ABSTRACT

Renormalization group theory does not restrict the form of continuous variation of critical exponents which occurs in presence of a marginal operator. However, the continuous variation of critical exponents, observed in different contexts, usually follows a weak universality scenario where some of the exponents (e.g., ß, γ, ν) vary keeping others (e.g., δ, η) fixed. Here we report ferromagnetic phase transition in (Sm1-yNdy)0.52Sr0.48MnO3 (0.5 ≤ y ≤ 1) single crystals where all three exponents ß, γ, δ vary with Nd concentration y. Such a variation clearly violates both universality and weak universality hypothesis. We propose a new scaling theory that explains the present experimental results, reduces to the weak universality as a special case, and provides a generic route leading to continuous variation of critical exponents and multi-criticality.

ABSTRACT

We report ferroelectricity around ∼88 K that appears well below T N (∼25 K), unlike other members of RCrO3 series. A synchrotron diffraction study suggests that the occurrence of ferroelectricity in NdCrO3 is coupled to the structural transformation from centrosymmetric Pnma to a non-centrosymmetric Pna21 space group. A strong magnetoelectric coupling is observed in the electric polarization [P(T)]. This coupling is significantly influenced by the magnetic field cooling effect, suggesting an exchange bias effect in P(T). This exchange bias effect is also revealed by the systematic shift of the magnetic hysteresis loops below T(N). The rare occurrence of an exchange bias effect in both the magnetic and electric polarizations associated with a strong magnetoelectric coupling is of fundamental interest, as well as being attractive for technological applications close to liquid nitrogen temperature.

ABSTRACT

The modification of individual oxygen functional groups and the resultant optical properties of a graphene oxide suspension were investigated using a controlled photothermal reduction by infrared irradiation. The evolution of the structural and optical characteristics of GO suspensions was obtained from Raman spectra, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, optical absorption, and steady state and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. The results suggest the gradual restoration of sp(2) clusters within the sp(3) matrix with an increase of the reduction time and power density. The yellow-red emission (∼610 nm) originated from the defect-assisted localized states in GO due to epoxy/hydroxyl (C-O/-OH) functional groups and that of the blue emission (∼500 nm) was ascribed to the carbonyl (C=O)-assisted localized electronic states. With an increase in the reduction time and IR power density, the intensity of the yellow-red emission was found to decrease, with the blue emission being prominent. These experimental findings open up a new dimension for controlling the optical absorption and emission properties of graphene oxide by tailoring the oxygen functional groups, which may lead to the potential application of graphene-based optoelectronic devices.

I.O.L. either primary or secondary has proved to be useful after traumatic cataract extraction. Problem of binocular single vision will be better solved and the traumatic eye becoming divergent and amblyopic can thus be avoided.
