ABSTRACT

The impact of the low-alcohol tonic (energizing) carbonated drinks on biochemical and hematological indices, on the functional state of the central nervous system and cardiovascular system was studied within the experiment over the outbred white male rats. The gained results were compared to indices of animals receiving the same concentrated solution of ethanol used for drinks preparation as well as to figures of intact group animals. The results gained from all compared animals groups had no significant differences.

ABSTRACT

Such genotypes of human papilloma virus (HPV) as "malignant" (180), "benign" (49) and indeterminate (127) were identified in 356 females by PCR and cytological procedures. The following therapeutic techniques were compared: cryodestruction of the uterine cervix (60), antiviral medication (AVM) (19), combination of AVM and cryodestruction (224), and combination of AVM and laser destruction (54). In the "malignant" HPV group, AVM in conjunction with cryo- or laser destruction was significantly more effective than cryodestruction or AVM alone. Both cryodestruction alone and in combination with AVM were more effective in treating "benign" genotypes. Repeat courses showed the same tendency.

ABSTRACT

Actual nutrition of children living at boarding-school of the Yamal-Nenets autonomous district and also characteristics of their health, such as capacity for work, vitamin metabolism, physical development and activity of bio-oxidant systems of organism have been studied. The obtained results have become the basis for developing scientifically substantiated principles of creating balanced nutrition ration with antioxidant properties for the children living at the Far North.

ABSTRACT

The authors have analyzed the results of treatment for chronic posttraumatic osteomyelitis of the femoral bone in 69 cases of ununited fractures, false joints ad femoral bone defects. The treatment included surgical sanation of the osteomyelitic nidus together with aspiration lavage drainage and extranidal osteosynthesis by external fixation as well as local and general antibacterial therapy. In 13 cases free bone autoplasty of the osteomyelitic cavities or defects was used together with spongious structures of iliac bone (crest and wing), in 2 of these patients it was applied for replacement of the large defects of the diaphysis of the femoral bone (8 and 12 cm). In 57 patients surgical treatment was carried out in one stage, a major requisite for this was the opportunity for joining bone fragments inside the open wound after sequestrectomy as well as stable external fixation by the apparatus. This treatment gave successful results in 97% of patients.

ABSTRACT

Children's nutrition in the Arctic areas is characterized by deficiencies of major nutrients and some groups of foodstuffs, among which there are lower dietary protein, fat, and vitamin intakes, shortage of meat, fish, dairy products, fresh vegetables and fruits. Based on the studies, the authors propose within the framework of the goal-oriented programme "Children of the North" their complex hygienic recommendations for optimization of nutrition and alimentary status of the Arctic children, involving some functional nutritional elements aimed at improving and promoting their health.

ABSTRACT

Based on generalization and analysis of instructions and guidelines for therapeutical and prophylactic diets of workers, ways of its optimization were proposed, by using bifide-containing acid dairy products as a preventive agent against possible occupational diseases caused by occupational factors.

ABSTRACT

Diets, energy expenditures, physical and mental performance, anthropometric indices, ascorbic acid excretion, and morbidity rates were studied in 7-9-year-old schoolchildren of Monchegorsk, Murmansk Region. The alimentary features found served as the basis for developing sanitary recommendations to optimize diets and to promote children's health.

ABSTRACT

Energy expenditure, physical and mental capacity for work, ascorbic acid excretion, basic foodstuff supply were investigated in 7-9-year-old pupils from boarding schools. Specific features of the alimentary state of the children were used as a basis for working out hygienic recommendations to improve children's diets and health.

ABSTRACT

The article analyses experience in the treatment of 125 patients with ununited fractures and pseudarthrosis of the humeral diaphysis by osteosynthesis with massive compressing metal plates. The possibility of creating the necessary reserve of mechanical stability at the expense of the massive plates and strained fixation allows immobilization in a plaster cast to be avoided in most cases and early motor rehabilitation of the patients to be undertaken. The results were positive in 96.8% of cases, which makes it possible to consider the method to be sufficiently effective in the management of fractures of the humeral diaphysis and their sequelae.

ABSTRACT

Electron microscopic characteristic of 3 oncocytomas (of lung, small intestine, adrenal) is presented. All the tumours had a similar ultrastructure with a large number of mitochondria in their cytoplasm. The electron microscopic study confirmed the diagnosis of oncocytoma in 2 cases. In one case the diagnosis of oncocytoma was made on the basis of the electron microscopic examination.

ABSTRACT

A method for measuring the microbial cell dynamic loss modulus has been developed. The acoustic wave relaxation coefficient in the suspension of Escherichia coli cells was measured in relation to ultra-sound frequency and cell concentration. Using these data and proceeding from the ideas on acoustic and viscous properties of suspensions the volume dynamic loss modulus of cells was calculated. The obtained results were compared with the data on the loss modulus of albumin globules aggregates.

ABSTRACT

Eight medullary carcinomas of the human thyroid gland were examined electron microscopically for identification of cell types forming these tumors. The diagnosis was based on classical histological criteria including a positive reaction for amyloid and impregnation according to the method of De Grandi specific for C-cells. The human medullary carcinoma of the thyroid gland was found to contain dark, light, and intermediate tumor cells. The ultrastructural features of these types of cells suggest that they may be regarded as being at different stages of the intensity of synthesis processes more in the light cells. Amyloid production in this type of cancer is associated with tumor cells.

ABSTRACT

A pigmented tumor (melanoameloblastoma) in a 4-month-old infant localized in the upper jaw is described. The tumor consisted of cells with melanin granules in the cytoplasm. The detected neurosecretory granules and melanosomes in the parenchymal cells of the tumor suggest to be of neuroectodermal origin.

ABSTRACT

The qualitative and quantitative ultrastructural examinations of nucleoli of follicular cells and oncocytes of human thyroid revealed no morphological differences between these two types of cells and confirmed the presence of all structures necessary for normal functioning. Oncocyte nuclei are not carriers of morphological alterations which could have indicated severe functional disorders in these cells, and morphological and morphometric examinations indicated functional intactness of nuclei and nucleoli.

ABSTRACT

Electron microscopic examination of two tumors of the kidneys with similar histological structure (large eosinophilic cells with granular cytoplasm) showed that such tumors may be of different histogenesis (cytogenesis), their morphological picture in the light microscope being similar.

ABSTRACT

A change in the activity of succinic dehydrogenase, of the NAD- and NADP-diaphorases was studied in the dissociated culture of the cerebellum of neonatal rats under the effect of immune serum of the animals with an experimental allergic pertussis encephalomyelitis. There was revealed an increase in the activity of oligodendrocytes following a 3-hour exposure with the immune serum and a reduction of the activity of the enzymes under study in the same cells after a 12-hour exposure of the cultures with the serum. In difference from oligodendrocytes, the astrocytes displayed a high activity of all the enzymes under study after a 12-hour exposure.
