ABSTRACT

The Finnish-Russian collaboration on rabies control began in 2000. This data summarizes the results of the scientific part of the programme, including rabies monitoring in Russia and the molecular epidemiological studies with field viruses.

ABSTRACT

The most complicated situation concerning rabies is seen in the Saratov region. The basic reservoir of rabies in this region is wild carnivores. A study was conduted in three districts of the Saratov region to define the efficiency of measures taken with the "Sinrab" rabies vaccine containing "RV-97" used for oral immunisation of wild animals. As a result of the experiment it was established that specific prevention of rabies in wildlife in enzootic territories resulted in a decrease of rabies cases.

ABSTRACT

Molecules of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) virus interacting with susceptible porcine kidney cells block their receptors and inhibit FMD virus infection. Adsorption of inactivated virus by cells is rapid, reversible, and type-specific. Efficacy of cell receptor blocking and protection from FMD depends on the dose of specific antigen and adequate saturation.
