ABSTRACT

Wilson's disease is arare inherited disorder of copper met abolism. If le f t untre ated, i t can turn into a multi systemic disease with copper deposition in the liver, brain, a nd other tissues. Diagnosi s of Wilson's is delayed in Pak ist an by many ye a rs on average due to va riabl e presen tations. In ad olescents, the initial s igns a re more likely to b e neuropsychiatric. Here we present a case of Wilso n's disease that pre sented initially with he patic symptoms and did not have signs specific to the di sea s e such as Kayser-Fleischer rings. Our case was diagnosed to be Wilson's Disease on ly on further investigat ions and s ubsequently the patient was treated with chela tion therapy using D-Penicillamine.Wilson's Disease should be kept in mind as a differential diagno sis in adolesce nt patients that present with unexplained acute liver failure and cytopenias without any neurological symptoms, as a missed diagnosis can prove to be fatal.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Throughout history, the world has faced numerous health challenges and outbreaks, but through the dedication of medical professionals, solutions have been found. Despite this, the emergence of the coronavirus (COVID-19) has presented a new and dangerous threat. Nevertheless, with unwavering commitment, health experts have triumphantly discovered a remedy. OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to examine how religious workers worldwide could contribute positively to ensuring the fair distribution of COVID-19 vaccines, addressing vaccine hesitancy, encouraging people to get vaccinated, and preventing vaccine nationalism. METHOD: Our study employed a refined qualitative content analysis methodology to categorize factual information and pave the way for subsequent policymakers. We meticulously curetted the most trustworthy secondary data sources and utilized them to analyze the study. RESULTS: The content analysis reveals that religious workers played an active role in the global coronavirus vaccination drive by working towards better vaccine distribution, encouraging people to get vaccinated and countering hesitation and nationalism. CONCLUSION: In light of the discoveries, it would be prudent for policymakers to engage religious workers in advancing the cause of public health, regardless of whether the health matters are localized, national, or global in scale. This strategy has the potential to be both alluring and convincing.

ABSTRACT

Physician burnout is recognized as a global crisis and an epidemic. However, burnout in rheumatology is an understudied phenomenon. We explored the prevalence of physician burnout among rheumatologists from South Asia in the peri-pandemic period (2021-2022). Rheumatologists from Asian countries were invited to participate in an anonymized, validated, and pilot-tested e-survey via social media platforms from December 2021 to April 2022. Demographic information, social aspects (marital status, income, vacation time, daily exercise), substance abuse, EHR (electronic health record) use, and years in practice were obtained. In addition, burnout was estimated using Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey for Medical Personnel (MBI-HSS) in three domains: emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP), and personal accomplishment (PA), and intergroup comparisons were made using independent t test and one-way ANOVA using SPSS v27. Of 146 respondents who participated in the survey, 134 belonged to Asian nations. The highest number of respondents was from Pakistan (56/134, 38.36%), followed by India (49/134, 33.56%). Slightly more respondents were male, 75 (51.4%), than females, 71 (48.6%). Over two-thirds of our respondents (99/134, 67.8%) reported burnout in at least one domain. Notably, we found statistically significant increased depersonalization scores in males. (P < 0.05). Females scored significantly higher on the following items: #5 (I feel I treat some patients as if they were impersonal objects), item# 10 (I've become more insensitive toward people since I took this job and item#22 (I feel patients blame me for some of their problems) (P < 0.05). We found differences in monthly salaries among South Asian (1484 ± 2717 USD) and non-South Asian respondents (5672 ± 8874 USD) (P < 0.01). A substantial proportion of rheumatologists in our survey report burnout, suggesting a felt need to introduce organizational measures to prevent and mitigate burnout and preserve the rheumatology workforce.

ABSTRACT

Hughes-Stovin Syndrome (HSS) is a rare vasculitic disorder characterised by widespread pulmonary artery aneurysms. It shares some features with Behçet disease. Currently, the diagnosis is based on clinical suspicion. Our case describes a young male who presented with haemoptysis and previous history of pulmonary embolism. Workup was essentially unremarkable, but imaging revealed multiple pulmonary artery aneurysms. Timely initiation of glucocorticoids and immunosuppression with cyclophosphamide led to improvement. High-dose glucocorticoids and immunosuppressants are the mainstays of treatment. Untreated cases can result in fatal outcomes.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Research is essential and necessary for those who love learning, whether they belong to a research institution or not. Numerous elements influence researchers' attitudes towards good research work, but in this study we focus on the most significant ones: advisor support, intrinsic motivation, timing, and planning. OBJECTIVES: The current study aims at motivating readers to help improve students' attitudes towards research work within the university context. METHOD: The target demographic of the current research comprises masters and doctoral students from three major public institutions in Xi'an, China. We aimed to examine the effects of the variables and the study employed correlation and stepwise regression. RESULTS: The results show that advisor support influences attitudes towards research positively and significantly (ß= 0.20, p < 0.01). Likewise, intrinsic motivation has a positive and significant effect on attitude towards research (ß= 0.18, p < 0.01). Time attitudes significantly influenced attitudes towards research (ß= 0.14, p < 0.05). Furthermore, time planning also positively and significantly influenced the attitude towards research (ß= 0.15, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: To achieve an excellent attitude towards research work, students need a cooperative academic advisor who will intrinsically motivate them in their research activities. However, they must manage their academic time and be equipped with time management skills.

ABSTRACT

This study explores how the scholarly accomplishments of students might increment due to specific fundamental causes. The academic performance of the student was prioritized as a dependent variable, and the independent indicators chosen were "information seeking, IT ability, reading/writing capacity, and resilience." At the same time, age, gender, marital status, and family income were included in the control variables. The research subject samples were limited to (N = 288) postgraduate students from three mega universities in Islamabad, Pakistan. Forward regression analysis was performed in this research to decide the impact of the indicators. The results indicate that information seeking affects academic performance positively and significantly. Essentially, the study revealed that information technology (IT) skills make a fundamentally positive and significant impact on academic performance. Reading and writing influenced academic performance considerably. In addition, resilience affected academic performance emphatically and essentially. Further, this research also noted the relationships between information-seeking behaviors, IT ability, reading/writing capacities, and resilience capabilities and the academic performance of students. These variables have a positive impact on the academic performance of students.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To determine empathy level among undergraduate medical students with respect to gender and the year of study. METHODS: The cross-sectional study was conducted at the University College of Medicine and Dentistry, Lahore, Pakistan, from December, 2015, to January, 2016, and comprised undergraduate medical students of either gender in all the five years of their course. Data was collected using the student version of the Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy. Data was analysed using SPSS 20. RESULTS: Of the 260 students, 153(58.9%) were females and 107(41.1%) were males. Overall mean empathy level was 90.63±11.55. Females scored higher than males (p<0.05). The highest empathy level was seen among the First Year medical students 93.39±9.11, while the lowest was seen in Third Year students 87.71±13.94. CONCLUSIONS: Overall empathy level was seriously low, indicating the need for curricular reforms.
