ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Fixed appliances used in orthodontic treatment are accompanied by some drawbacks, including the development of white spots or enamel demineralization in the vicinity of the brackets and bonding failures. This study aims to evaluate the effect of combining different wt.% of Emodin nanoparticles (ENPs) with orthodontic adhesives to attain adhesives with improved antimicrobial and mechanical properties. METHODS: ENPs were synthesized and added to orthodontic composite at different concentrations (0.5%, 1%, and 2%). The distribution of ENPs within the composite was evaluated using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). A total of 216 disks were prepared, with 144 subjected to an eluted components test, 36 used for disk agar diffusion (DAD) test, and 36 for biofilm inhibition test. These tests aimed to assess the antimicrobial activity of the composites against Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Candida albicans. Additionally, the bond strength between stainless-steel brackets and teeth was evaluated using the shear bond strength (SBS) test, and the adhesive remnant index (ARI) score was determined. One-way analysis of variance and Kruskal-Wallis test were used to analyse the SBS and ARI, respectively. For pairwise group comparison concerning the biofilm inhibition, DAD, and eluted components tests, the Tamhane and Games-Howell tests for data with unequal variances and the post-hoc Tukey's HSD and Scheffe tests for data with equal variances were used. RESULTS: The FESEM results confirmed the synthesis and even distribution of ENPs in the composite. Only the 2% group showed significant biofilm inhibition against all microorganisms studied (P<0.05). The DAD test revealed that a 1% concentration of ENPs is sufficient to inhibit growth for all microorganisms. The eluted components test demonstrated that the 2% concentration of ENPs performed significantly better against S. mutans compared to the control group (P<0.05). The highest mean SBS was observed with the 0.5% ENP concentration, while no significant differences in SBS and ARI were found among the groups (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: This in vitro study showed that the 2% concentration of ENP produced significantly improved antimicrobial activity without adversely affecting SBS and ARI score. This would support the addition of 2% ENP to orthodontic adhesives.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: This study aimed to assess the impact of recommended mouthwashes (chlorhexidine, hydrogen peroxide, and povidone-iodine) used during the COVID-19 pandemic on the shear bond strength (SBS) of orthodontic brackets. Materials and Methods: A total of 52 human premolar teeth were divided into 4 groups (N=13) consisting of no intervention (control group), 0.2% chlorhexidine, 1.5% hydrogen peroxide, and 0.2% povidone-iodine. Following immersion in the mouthwashes, orthodontic brackets were bonded to enamel surfaces. Then, the brackets were debonded using a universal testing machine. The specimens were evaluated with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and adhesive remnant index (ARI) score was assessed. One-way ANOVA and Tukey test were used for statistical analysis and P<0.05 was considered significant. Results: The SBS of the experimental groups decreased compared to the control group. The highest SBS mean value was observed in the controls and the lowest was found in the 0.2% povidone-iodine group. Significant differences in SBS values were found between the 0.2% povidone-iodine group and the 1.5% hydrogen peroxide group when compared to the control group (P=0.023, P=0.028, respectively). SEM analysis revealed similar characteristics among the groups, with a closer resemblance between the chlorhexidine and control groups. Additionally, these groups exhibited greater etching depth compared to the other groups. Conclusion: Our findings highlight the importance of careful selection and application of mouthwashes in orthodontic procedures. While 1.5% hydrogen peroxide and 0.2% povidone-iodine may have some impact on bond strength, their use can still be considered acceptable within defined limits.

ABSTRACT

White spot lesions (WSLs) are one of the most common adverse effects following comprehensive fixed orthodontic treatment. The purpose of this review was to evaluate recent studies addressing the prevention and treatment of these lesions. Electronic databases were searched for English-written studies published between 2015 and October 2020 involving randomized clinical trials aiming at prevention or treatment of orthodontically induced WSLs using the following keywords in their title or abstracts: randomized clinical trial OR randomized controlled trial AND white spot OR caries OR demineralization OR decalcification OR remineralization. From the 23 papers which met the inclusion criteria, 11 were on preventive methods, while 12 addressed treatment protocols. However, most of the reviewed studies had a high risk of bias. The results of this review strongly support the importance of oral hygiene observation in preventing WSLs. Sodium fluoride varnish 5% was confirmed to be effective in the treatment of these lesions, as well as in the prevention of WSLs in patients with suboptimal oral hygiene. In addition, immediate CO2 laser irradiation after bonding can effectively prohibit formation of WSLs during orthodontic treatment. The literature also illustrates a promising masking effect of resin infiltration for the treatment of WSLs. However, little scientific evidence supports the effectiveness of Casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) against WSLs, although more clinical trials with long-term follow-up are needed. Oral hygiene maintenance is crucial in the prevention of WSLs, and 5% sodium fluoride varnish and CO2 laser irradiation are recommended in patients with compromised oral hygiene. In the case of WSL formation, fluoride varnish and resin infiltration are effective treatment modalities.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of emodin nanoparticles (n-Emo) on the flexural strength of acrylic resin used in orthodontics. METHODS: A total of 24 acrylic resin discs were prepared according to ISO:20795-1 and divided into four groups (n=6): 0% n-Emo, 0.5% n-Emo, 1% n-Emo, and 2% n-Emo. The flexural strength of each group was measured using the Universal Testing Machine. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey tests were used to analyse the data. RESULTS: The highest flexural strength values were observed in the groups containing 0% and 0.5% concentrations of n-Emo, while the lowest mean flexural strength was recorded in the group containing 2% concentration of n-Emo. There were significant difference in flexural strength values between the groups containing 0% with those containing 1% and 2% concentrations (P=0.045, P=0.011, respectively), as well as between those containing 0.5% and 2% concentrations of n-Emo (P=0.041). CONCLUSIONS: The results of the study showed that the incorporation of n-Emo had a negative impact on the flexural strength of the acrylic resin utilized in orthodontics. Nonetheless, the mean flexural strength values of all groups fell within the normal range, implying that the addition of n-Emo did not jeopardize the mechanical properties of the acrylic resin. It is therefore conceivable that the use of n-Emo as an antimicrobial agent in acrylic resin could be a promising approach to reducing enamel demineralisation and dental caries, while preserving its mechanical properties. ABSTRACT

Objective: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the association of COVID-19 vaccination with the quality and quantity of sleep, the level of stress, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders (TMDs) in Iranian dental students. Materials and methods: In this cross-sectional research, we applied a questionnaire including 30 questions on the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), sleep quality and quantity, Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD), and vaccination status. All vaccinated students of the dental schools located in the city of Tehran were invited to participate in the study. Participants were divided into three groups: those vaccinated for less than a month, those vaccinated for 1-3 months, and those vaccinated for more than 3 months. A paired t-test served for statistical analysis. Results: Overall, 171 out of 235 students (72.77%) completed the questionnaire, among which 90 individuals were fully vaccinated, and were included in the data analysis. Stress levels decreased (mean difference = -1.23, p-value = 0.002) and sleep quality and quantity improved mostly 1-3 months after the vaccination (mean difference = -0.5, p-value = 0.016). However, TMD symptoms were mostly alleviated in people vaccinated for more than 3 months (mean difference = -2.86, p-value <0.05). In this respect, no significant difference was observed between the two genders. Conclusion: According to the results of the study, vaccination was associated with the improvement of psychological consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is recommended that further longitudinal studies be conducted on larger sample sizes and different age groups by using various data collection methods (especially regarding the assessment of TMD).

ABSTRACT

Background. Orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) occurs in the alveolar bone; therefore, any condition affecting bone quality can alter OTM. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of amitriptyline on OTM in rats. Methods. Forty-five male Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups: (I) no injection, (II) injection with saline solution, and (III) injection of amitriptyline. Next, a 60-gr force was applied to the maxillary left first molar tooth of all the rats, using a nickel‒titanium closed-coil spring ligated between the maxillary incisors and the left first molar tooth. The rats were sacrificed after 21 days to measure OTM and perform histological analysis to determine the number, width, and depth of resorptive lacunae, osteoclast counts, and periodontal ligament (PDL) width. Results. The highest and the lowest OTM rates were found in the control and amitriptyline groups, respectively; however, there was no significant difference between the study groups in this regard. Histological analysis showed a significantly lower number of resorption lacunae in the amitriptyline group than the saline group. Conclusion. Although no significant difference was noted in OTM after amitriptyline administration, a reduction in the number of resorptive lacunae in rats injected with amitriptyline suggests that amitriptyline affects the bone tissue at the cellular level.

Background. This study compared the force decay pattern of two different orthodontic active tiebacks (ATBs) exposed to five different commercially available mouth rinses. Methods. In this in vitro study, 90 transparent ATBs and 90 gray ATBs were divided into six groups; one was the control group, and the others were exposed to one of these mouth rinses twice a day for 60 seconds: Listerine, chlorhexidine, Orthokin, Persica, and fluoride. The initial force of each ATB was 250 g at a 24-mm extension. The force of ATBs was measured on days 1, 7, 14, and 28 using a digital gauge. Results. The highest percentage of force loss was observed between days 14 and 28 (P<0.05). At the end of the study, the Persica group exhibited the highest force degradation in both ATB types. In the transparent ATBs, it was followed by Orthokin, Listerine, fluoride, chlorhexidine, and control groups, respectively. In the gray ATBs, Orthokin, chlorhexidine, control, Listerine, and fluoride groups exhibited the highest force decay in descending order. In some groups, the differences between transparent and gray ATBs were significant. In the control group, the force of transparent ATB was significantly higher than gray ones on days 7 and 14 but not significantly after four weeks. Conclusion. ATBs' force degradation could be exacerbated by the use of some mouth rinses. There were some differences between force relaxation patterns of transparent and gray ATBs. The data could be beneficial in choosing appropriate O-rings for making ATBs.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the effect of erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Er:YAG) and erbium, chromium: yttrium, scandium, gallium, garnet (Er,Cr:YSGG) lasers on the shear bond strength (SBS) of ceramic brackets debonding from the surface of composite blocks. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-six composite blocks were fabricated using Filtek Z250 light-cure composite. Block surfaces were etched with 37% phosphoric acid for 30 seconds and then rinsed with water for 20 seconds and dried. Maxillary right central incisor ceramic orthodontic brackets were bonded to the surfaces of composite blocks using Transbond XT adhesive and were cured for 40 seconds. Twelve samples were irradiated with Er:YAG laser, while 12 samples were irradiated with Er,Cr:YSGG laser, and the brackets were then debonded using a universal testing machine. Twelve samples served as controls (debonding using the universal testing machine without using a laser). The adhesive remnant index (ARI) score and bracket or composite cracks were evaluated under a stereomicroscope. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used for the comparison of the three groups. Kruskal-Wallis test was used to compare the ARI scores. RESULTS: The mean SBS was 17.01±5.22 MPa with Er:YAG laser, 18.03±6.46 MPa with Er,Cr:YSGG laser, and 16.61±6.73 MPa in the control group; the difference of the three groups was not significant (P=0.835). The difference in the ARI scores and enamel and composite cracks was not significant either (P>0.05). CONCLUSION: This study did not show any reduction in the bond strength of ceramic bracket to composite blocks after Er:YAG and Er,Cr:YSGG laser irradiation.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose was to compare shear bond strength (SBS), pulp temperature, and adhesive remnant index (ARI) in debonding of stainless steel brackets from enamel surface using neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser versus the conventional debonding method. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-eight extracted premolars were bonded to stainless steel brackets. The samples were divided into three experimental groups and one control group. In the first three groups, Nd:YAG laser was used for debonding with the power of 1, 1.5, and 2 W, respectively, for 10 seconds. The SBS and ARI of the samples were assessed. Pulp temperature was recorded before and after irradiation. Two samples from each group were used for determining enamel morphology after debonding using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). RESULTS: The mean SBS in the groups was 33.05, 28.69, 24.37, and 31.53 MPa, respectively, with no statistically significant differences (P=0.205). Significant differences in post-irradiation temperature were noted among the lased groups (P=0.000). Debonding mainly occurred at the adhesive-enamel interface in the 1-W laser and control groups and at the bracket-adhesive interface in the 1.5-W and 2-W laser groups. Enamel structure was amorphous and irregular following laser irradiation. CONCLUSION: Based on the results of this study, the use of Nd:YAG laser could not significantly affect the SBS. Therefore, this laser would not be suitable for debonding of metal brackets. The use of a 2-W laser could significantly raise the pulpal temperature. Nd:YAG laser renders a more heterogeneous enamel morphology compared to conventional debonding methods.

OBJECTIVES: Rebonding of isolated brackets is an economic option that can be conducted using available in-office or commercial recycling methods. Nowadays, lasers are known as an efficient modality for composite removal, but there is not much information available about using lasers for removal of adhesive remnants from the ceramic bracket base. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty human premolar teeth were divided into five groups. Samples in all groups were bonded to ceramic brackets. Brackets in four groups were debonded and the remaining adhesive was removed by Er:YAG laser, Er;Cr:YSGG laser, sandblasting or direct flame. After removing adhesives from the tooth surfaces by carbide bur, the recycled brackets were bonded again. in the control group, new ceramic brackets were bonded. Finally, all brackets were debonded by universal testing machine and their shear bond strength (SBS) was measured. The adhesive remnant index (ARI) was calculated under a stereomicroscope at ×10 magnification. Data were analyzed using oneway ANOVA and Tukey's test. RESULTS: SRS values showed no significant difference among the five groups (P=0.568). The highest SRS was noted in the control group (7.46±1.4 MPa), followed by Er:YAG laser group (7.40±1.24 Mpa) and the lowest was noted in the flame group (6.32±2.3 Mpa). ARI scores indicated that most of the adhesive remained on the tooth surface in all groups. CONCLUSIONS: Recycling of ceramic brackets with Er:YAG laser is an efficient in-office method which causes the least damage to the bracket base. However, all methods of bracket recycling showed acceptable SBS.

ABSTRACT

Several techniques have been proposed to obtain a durable bond, and the efficacy of these techniques is assessed by measuring parameters such as bond strength. Laser has provided a bond strength as high as that of acid etching in vitro and has simpler use with shorter clinical time compared to acid etching. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of Er:YAG and Er,Cr:YSGG lasers for etching and bonding of composite to orthodontic brackets. No previous study has evaluated the effect of these particular types of laser. A total of 70 composite blocks were randomly divided into five groups (n = 14): group 1, etching with phosphoric acid for 20 s; group 2, Er:YAG laser irradiation with 2 W power for 10 s; group 3, Er:YAG laser with 3 W power for 10 s; group 4, Er,Cr:YSGG laser with 2 W power for 10 s; group 5, Er,Cr:YSGG laser with 3 W power for 10 s. Metal brackets were then bonded to composites, and after 5000 thermal cycles, they were subjected to shear bond strength test in a universal testing machine after 24 h of water storage. One sample of each group was evaluated under a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to assess changes in composite surface after etching. The adhesive remnant index (ARI) was calculated under a stereomicroscope. Data were statistically analyzed. The mean and standard deviation of shear bond strength were 18.65 ± 3.36, 19.68 ± 5.34, 21.31 ± 4.03, 17.38 ± 6.94, and 16.45 ± 4.26 MPa in groups 1-5, respectively. The ARI scores showed that the bond failure mode in all groups was mainly mixed. The groups were not significantly different in terms of shear bond strength. Er:YAG and Er,Cr:YSGG lasers with the mentioned parameters yield optimal shear bond strength and can be used as an alternative to acid etching for bracket bond to composite.

As the antimicrobial properties of TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) have been proven, the aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial and mechanical properties of composite resins modified by the addition of TiO2 NPs. METHODS: Orthodontics composite containing 0%, 1%, 5% and 10% NPs were prepared. 180 composite disks were prepared for elution test, disk agar diffusion test and biofilm inhibition test to collect the counts of microorganisms on three days, measure the inhibition diameter and quantify the viable counts of colonies consequently. For shear bond strength (SBS) test, 48 intact bovine incisors were divided into four groups. Composites containing 0%, 1%, 5% and 10% NPs were used for bonding of bracket. The bracket/tooth SBS was measured by using an universal testing machine. RESULTS: All concentration of TiO2 NPs had a significant effect on creation and extension of inhibition zone. For S. mutans and S. sanguinis, all concentration of TiO2 NPs caused reduction of the colony counts. Composite containing 10% TiO2 NPs had significant effect on reduction of colony counts for S. mutans and S. sanguinis in all three days. The highest mean shear bond strength belonged to the control group, while the lowest value was seen in 10% NPs composite. CONCLUSIONS: Incorporating TiO2 nanoparticles into composite resins confer antibacterial properties to adhesives, while the mean shear bond of composite containing 1% and 5% NPs still in an acceptable range.

RESUMO Introdução: o acúmulo de placa e as descolagens de braquetes são algumas desvantagens presentes no tratamento ortodôntico, no qual se requer o uso de materiais compósitos para a colagem dos braquetes. Objetivo: tendo em vista que as propriedades antimicrobianas das nanopartículas (NPs) de TiO2 já foram confirmadas, o objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar as propriedades antimicrobianas e mecânicas de resinas compostas modificadas pela adição de NPs de TiO2. Métodos: compósitos ortodônticos contendo 0%, 1%, 5% e 10% de NPs foram preparados. Cento e oitenta discos de compósito foram preparados para o teste de eluição, o ensaio de difusão em ágar por disco, e o ensaio de inibição da formação de biofilme, para se calcular as contagens de microrganismos ao longo de três dias, medir o diâmetro da inibição e, consequentemente, quantificar as contagens de colônias viáveis. Para o teste de resistência da colagem ao cisalhamento (SBS), 48 incisivos bovinos intactos foram divididos em quatro grupos, nos quais os compósitos contendo 0%, 1%, 5% e 10% de NPs foram utilizados para colagem dos braquetes. A SBS da interface braquete/dente foi medida em uma máquina universal de ensaios. Resultados: todas as concentrações de NPs de TiO2 apresentaram efeito significativo na formação e na extensão da zona de inibição. Para o S. mutans e o S. sanguinis, todas as concentrações de NPs de TiO2 causaram redução na contagem das colônias. O compósito contendo 10% de NPs de TiO2 apresentou uma diminuição significativa na contagem de colônias de S. mutans e S. sanguinis durante os três dias. A média mais alta da SBS foi observada no grupo controle, enquanto o valor mais baixo foi observado para o compósito com 10% de NPs. Conclusões: a incorporação de nanopartículas de TiO2 nas resinas compostas lhes conferiu propriedades antibacterianas, e o valor médio da SBS das resinas contendo 1% e 5% de NPs apresentou-se dentro de uma faixa aceitável.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The aim of this study was to assess the caries-preventive potential of carbon dioxide (CO2) laser application in conjunction with the use of titanium tetra fluoride solution on the enamel adjacent to bracket. Methods: Seventy-five freshly extracted bovine incisors were used. In order to attach the brackets, the area of examination was covered with adhesive tape to limit acid etching of the entire enamel surface. Metal orthodontic brackets for upper central were bonded to all the teeth following the manufacturer's instruction. Then all the teeth were painted with 2 layers of acid-resistant nail varnish on all surfaces except the boxes area cervical to the brackets. The teeth were then randomly divided into five groups (n = 15): control group (C); laser group (L); titanium group (T); laser-titanium group (LT) and titanium-laser group (TL). The laser-titanium group was first irradiated with CO2 laser (same as the L group) then TiF4 solution was applied on the enamel (same as the T group). Samples in the TL group were first treated with TiF4 solution (same as the T group) and then irradiated with CO2 laser on the surface (same as the L group). Then, the teeth were immersed in pH-cycling solutions. After that, the amount of calcium released into the two solutions (de- and re-mineralization) was measured with an atomic absorption spectroscopy. The data were analyzed by one-way Analysis of var-iance (ANOVA) and Tukey test. Results: Calcium loss in LT, TL and T groups were significantly lower than those in the L and C groups (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The application of Titanium tetra fluoride 4% solution on enamel can inhibit as much as 87% of subsequent caries like lesion progression.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Nitric oxide (NO) is a signaling molecule that mediates mechanical bone loading. Cyclic guanosine 3', 5' monophosphate (cGMP) is a NO-induced effector molecule. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of NO-cGMP pathway on orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) in rats by use of two phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) inhibitors namely sildenafil and tadalafil as chemical tools. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-five male Wistar rats were divided into three equal groups (n=15) based on the substance they received. The first group received daily injections of tadalafil; the second group received daily injections of sildenafil and the third group received daily injections of normal saline. The orthodontic appliances consisted of nickel-titanium closed-coil spring ligated between the maxillary right incisor and the first molar of the animals for 21 days. The amount of tooth movement was measured in all three groups at the end of this period. Histological analysis was performed to assess root resorption lacunae, osteoclast number and periodontal ligament (PDL) thickness. RESULTS: All appliance-treated molars in the experimental and control groups showed evidence of tooth movement. The mean OTM was calculated to be 0.39±0.16, 0.32±0.16 and 0.26±0.16mm in tadalafil, sildenafil and control groups, respectively and there were no significant differences in OTM among the study groups (P>0.05). In the tadalafil group, significantly greater root resorption on the tension side was seen when compared with controls (P≤0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Tadalafil and sildenafil PDE-5 inhibitors affecting the NO-cGMP pathway did not affect OTM in rats.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Fluoxetine is a selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor (SSRI) widely used for depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of fluoxetine on orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-five male Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups namely the control group (no medication), saline and fluoxetine dissolved in saline. In all groups, nickel titanium closed-coil spring was used between the left maxillary central incisor and first molar to exert 60g force at 2mm activation. Radiographs were taken at one and 21 days. After 21 days, the rats were sacrificed. The distance between the first and second molar teeth, optical density of bone, periodontal ligament (PDL) width, lacuna length and depth and number of osteoclasts were measured and compared among the groups. RESULTS: Tooth movement significantly increased in the fluoxetine group (P=0.005). No significant differences were found in osteoclast count (P=0.069). The PDL width in the mesioapical region of root was significantly different among the groups (P=0.015). Statistical analysis did not show significant differences in depth or length of lacunae in any examined part of the root (P>0.05). Bone densitometry results showed that in fluoxetine group, density of bone in all four areas (alveolar bone, hard palate, skull and mandibular bone) significantly decreased from day one to day 21 (P< 0.05). CONCLUSION: This study indicated that fluoxetine decreased bone density, which resulted in subsequently greater tooth movement in rats; however, further studies are needed on humans.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Statins are used as cholesterol-lowering drugs by many patients and have been recently shown to affect bone metabolism. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of atorvastatinon on orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-six adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into three groups of 12 samples each. Group A, served as control with no medication while groups B and C received a daily gavage of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as vehicle and atorvastatin (5 mg/kg) as test substance, respectively. In all three groups, 6mm nickel-titanium closed-coil springs were ligated between the maxillary incisors and first left molars to deliver an initial force of 60g. Tooth movement was measured following sacrifice, 21 days after appliance insertion. Root resorption, PDL width and osteoclast number were histologically evaluated and compared between the groups. RESULTS: The mean amount of tooth movement was 0.62 mm in group A, 0.59 mm in group B and 0.38 mm in group C. OTM reduction following administration of atorvastatin was statistically significant (p<0.05), but there was no significant difference in the studied histologic variables among the three groups (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: According to the results obtained in the current study, atorvastatin appears to reduce tooth movement in rats; however its effect on osteoclasts, especially osteoclastic function, requires further investigation.
