ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by progressive neurological deficits, including prominent oculomotor dysfunction. We report 5 cases of eye movement assessment in children 9-15 years old with A-T. METHODS: Three different oculomotor tasks (gaze holding, visually guided saccades and visual search) were used, and video-oculography was performed. Additionally, the scale for the assessment and rating of ataxia (SARA) score was used to assess severity of the cerebellar ataxia. RESULTS: Unstable gaze holding, nystagmus and saccadic intrusions were found. In addition to psychophysiological assessment results, we provide quantitative analysis of oculomotor activity, revealing a specific abnormal oculomotor pattern, consisting of (i) marked saccade hypermetria, (ii) unstable gaze holding, and (iii) gaze-evoked nystagmus. CONCLUSION: Our study opens the prospect to evaluate efficacy and safety of alternative methods for supporting the patient and improving his/her life quality.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Verbal fluency tasks are mainly used for assessment of verbal fluency and have proven useful for differential diagnosis. The first objective of the study was to provide normative data on phonemic verbal fluency (for letters "Π" [p], "O" [o], "C" [s]) in children population. The second objective of the study was to establish diagnostic validity of the present task and to collect normative data on participants who survived posterior fossa tumor (PFT) and participants with treated hemoblastosis. METHOD: For diagnostics, we used verbal fluency test. The normative sample consisted of 746 participants aged 7-16 years. A linear multiple regression analysis was implemented for each dependent variable with age, gender, disease for all participants and academic achievement as predictors in normative sample. The performance of 746 healthy participants was compared to the performance of 118 participants who survived PFT and 492 participants who survived hemoblastosis using one-way ANOVA analysis. RESULTS: Healthy children have better verbal fluency than their peers who survived cancer. In the group of healthy children, we assessed the relationship between verbal fluency and school performance. A significant correlation with the "Russian language" subject (r = 0.127; p < 0.001) emerged. In all three groups of children, age and gender turned out to be significant factors that affected the characteristics of verbal fluency. CONCLUSION: Our data will contribute to increasing the accuracy of verbal fluency deficit detection in Russian speakers and will be useful for differential diagnosis of cognitive impairment for children who have survived oncological diseases of various geneses.

ABSTRACT

This study is the first to assess the internal consistency and factor validity of the Abbreviated Math Anxiety Scale (AMAS) in a sample of Russian adolescents as well as gender differences and gender invariance. The study included 4,218 adolescents in grades 7-9 (M = 14.23, SD = 0.92). Internal consistency, measured with Cronbach's alpha, was high. Analysis of the factor structure revealed the best correspondence of the second-order factor model, which included two scales (learning math anxiety and math evaluation anxiety) and the general scale of math anxiety. There were greater gender differences in the all three scales. Analysis of gender invariance demonstrated that the mathematics anxiety construct was uniform in boys and girls. These findings confirm the reliable psychometric properties and validity of the AMAS, enabling its use in adolescents.

ABSTRACT

Cerebellar tumors often affect the eye movement centers located in vermis, negatively affecting cognitive development and learning abilities in children. Previous research has established that patients who survived cerebellar tumors tend to demonstrate various saccadic impairments (e.g., hypermetria) and poor gaze stability as compared to healthy controls. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the influence of oculomotor deficits in such patients on reading parameters. A total of 112 children (8-17 y.o.), 65 of whom survived cerebellar tumors, participated in the study. The study design included several oculomotor and reading tasks. Eye movements were recorded every 1/60 s monocularly with an Arrington eye tracker. We observed profound reading impairments in the patients as compared to healthy children, including longer reading time, greater numbers of fixations and regressive saccades, and longer fixation durations. We also found significant correlations between changes in basic oculomotor functions and reading parameters. The patients also demonstrated gaze fixation instability, large number of fixations, and long scanpath reflecting the return of the gaze to the already counted objects. Thus, oculomotor changes caused by cerebellar tumor and its treatment led to disturbances in such neurocognitive activity as reading. Our findings emphasize the necessity of considering these deficits in cerebellar tumor survivors when designing rehabilitation protocols.
