ABSTRACT

Current study covers the preparation and application of a commercial modified lead oxide battery electrode (LBE) in electrochemical oxidation (ECO) of metronidazole (MNZ) in an aqueous phase. Modified electrode is prepared by doping of bimetal-oxide (Fe and Zn) nanoparticles (NPs) & single metal-oxide (Fe/Zn) on bagasse-waste carbon (bwc) which is further coated on LBE. The modified LBE electrode surface was examined for metal-oxide NPs through X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). Different electrodes are prepared by varying combinations of two metal-oxide based on molar ratio and tested for electrochemical characterization and MNZ removal test. Based on large oxygen evolution potential in a linear sweep volumetry (LSV) analysis and high MNZ removal rate, the best electrode has been represented as Fe1:Co2-bwc/LBE which contains Fe & Co molar ratio of 1:2. Moreover, equilibrium attained at faster rate in degradation process of MNZ, where pseudo first order kinetics of 2.29 × 10-2 min-1 was obtained under optimized condition of (MNZ:100 mg/L, pH:7, CD: 30 mA/cm2 and electrolyte: 0.05 M Na2SO4). Maximum MNZ removal, total organic carbon removal (TOC), mineralization current efficiency (MCE) & energy consumption (EC) of 98.7%, 85.3%, 62.2% & 96.143 kW h/kg-TOC removed are found in 180 min of treatment time for Fe1:Co2-bwc/LBE electrode. Accelerated service life test confirms that the stability of modified electrode is enhanced by 1.5 times compared to pristine LBE. Repeatability test confirms that modified LBE (Fe1:Co2-bwc/LBE) can be utilized up to 3 times.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Penile cancer is a rare malignancy of the genitourinary tract. We aimed to validate the recent changes in the T2 and T3 stages of penile cancer in the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) 8th edition and to compare its predictive ability with two other modified staging systems for survival outcomes. Methods: This is a retrospective study of patients diagnosed with penile cancer from June 2015 to March 2020. The AJCC 8th edition and two other newly proposed systems by Li et al. and Sali et al. were used for staging the tumor. All variables were categorized and correlated with lymph node (LN) metastases and overall survival (OS). Results: Fifty-four patients were eligible for this study. The mean age was 58 years (range 46-72 years). The tumor stage (P = 0.016), clinical LN stage (P = 0.001), the involvement of the spongiosa (P = 0.015) and the cavernosa (P = 0.002), lymphovascular invasion (LVI) (P = 0.000), and PNI (P = 0.021) were found to be the significant predictors of LN metastases. When the 5 year OS was compared between the T2 and T3 stages of the AJCC 8th edition, Li staging and the Sali staging systems, it was 91% and 50.1% (P = 0.001), 97.5% and 10.3% (P = 0.000), 94.4% and 14.7% (P = 0.000), respectively. The presence of LVI (P = 0.001) was the most significant independent predictor of OS. Conclusions: The recent changes in the AJCC 8th edition pertaining to the T2-T3 stage are relevant, although the other two newly proposed staging systems were more precise in predicting the survival outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Depressive symptomatology casts a more adverse impact on the well-being of women in countries with unfavourable societal norms. The prevalence of depressive symptomatology in Indian women and the treatment gap in case of mental health issues are alarming and thus may require interventions at a community level. The present study tested the efficacy of a psychosocial community-based intervention in managing depressive symptomatology and associated factors like rumination, reappraisal, psychological resilience, and self-efficacy using a pre-test post-test control group design. A total of 114 (Mage=23.03, SD = 5.29) and 37 (Mage=24.89, SD = 6.44) adult females were there in the experimental and the control group, respectively. A series of ANOVAs showed that participants' scores on depressive symptomatology and associated vulnerabilities and defences improved as compared to the baseline and the control group. The findings support the use of psychosocial community-based intervention in a non-specialized healthcare setting to manage depressive symptomatology, associated vulnerability and defences.

ABSTRACT

The prevalence of depressive symptomatology in Indian women and the associated treatment gap are alarming and require interventions at a community level. Such interventions may succeed if the specific risk and protective factors are appropriately identified and addressed. Identifying such factors may suggest a Psychological Defensive Syndrome (PDS) against depressive symptomatology, and inculcating this PDS through specific interventions may help individuals manage depressive symptomatology. For evaluating the feasibility of such an idea, a two-phase research project was initiated, and the current paper presents findings of its first phase. The primary aim of the first phase was to explore the predictive relationship between depressive symptomatology and rumination, reappraisal, resilience, self-efficacy, neuroticism, and extraversion. A total of 671 women (Mage = 23.71) responded to standardized questionnaires in a semi-structured interview setting. The obtained data were subjected to correlational, regression, and path analysis. The findings support all the hypotheses; women, who reported less engagement in rumination and more in reappraisal, who scored low on neuroticism and high on extraversion, resilience and self-efficacy, showed less severe depressive symptoms than their counterparts. This pattern can be thought of as a PDS against depressive symptoms in Indian women. These results highlight the importance of addressing these factors in preventing and assuaging depressive symptomatology in Indian women.

ABSTRACT

Background: The higher prevalence of depressive symptoms among women demands an in-depth exploration of every possible mechanism through which depressive symptoms may prevail. Identifying any malleable mechanism may open a new pathway through which such symptoms could be targeted. We explored the association between neuroticism, rumination, anxiety, and depressive symptoms and tested a moderated mediation model with anxiety as a mediator in the relationship between neuroticism and depressive symptoms, and rumination as a moderator of the effect of neuroticism on anxiety. Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted on Indian women living in the state of Punjab. A total of 671 adult females responded to the translated versions of standardized questionnaires measuring the relevant constructs. Results: The mean (SD) age of the sample was 23.71 (6.09) years. As hypothesized, anxiety significantly mediated the relationship between neuroticism and depression, and the use of rumination moderated the effect of neuroticism on anxiety. Among women with a high score on neuroticism, those with low ruminating tendencies showed less anxiety and depression than others who scored high on rumination. Conclusion: The findings imply that a reduction in rumination may help women, especially those who are high on neuroticism, manage their vulnerabilities toward anxiety and depressive symptoms. Personality traits being not that malleable, targeting a reduction of rumination usage, which is both a trans-diagnostic factor and a malleable one, can help address the surging prevalence of common mental disorders such as anxiety and depression through appropriately devised interventions.

ABSTRACT

1-(2-Hy-droxy-benz-yl)-2-(2-hy-droxy-phen-yl)-1H-benzimidazol-3-ium chloride, C20H17N2O2+·Cl-, was prepared by reaction of salicyl-aldehyde with o-phenyl-enedi-amine in the presence of tri-methyl-silyl chloride acting as a source of HCl. As a result of steric hindrance, the cation in the crystal is far from planar: the benzimidazole ring system makes dihedral angles of 55.49 (9) and 81.36 (8)° with the planes of the phenolic groups. The crystal packing is dominated by O-H⋯Cl and N-H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds, which link the cations and anions into four-membered rings and then into chains along [100]. The title compound exhibits two transitions in the UV region, which are revealed in the solid state and solution spectra as an absorption maximum at 280 nm and a shoulder at 320 nm. According to the results of TD-DFT calculation, both transitions have a π-π* nature and the mol-ecular orbitals involved in these transitions are mostly localized on the benzimidazole ring system and on the phenyl ring attached to it at the 2-position.
