ABSTRACT

The study of the efficiency and safety of the hepatotropic drug Remaxol in oncological patients with minimal, subclinical manifestations of liver dysfunction in the postoperative period was performed. It is shown that using of Remaxolcontributes to leveling the biochemical liver dysfunction: decrease of the concentration of total bilirubin, a decrease serum activity of lactate dehydrogenase, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, and alkaline phosphatase. The unwanted effects of Remaxol were not identified.

ABSTRACT

In a group of 811 patients with epithelial malignancies of the ovaries, the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures used were either standard or they involved elements of optimization based on certain objective criteria. The reliability of diagnosis and treatment efficacy in the two subgroups were compared. Stage I-II tumors made up 37.1% of neoplasms diagnosed at regular check-ups and 16.9% of those identified in controls. Duration of relapse-free period was 45.0 and 11.8 months whereas five-year survival rate--42.9% and 20.5%, respectively. Clinically inapparent recurrence was cytologically detected in 29.5% of "actively" followed patients. Additional estrogen and progestin therapy assured an increase in recurrence-free period from 13.5 to 20.6 months in patients with stage III-IV tumors (9.1 and 9.5 months in controls). The efficacy of single-agent and combination chemotherapy in stage III-IV cancer was nearly the same. Adjuvant postoperative chemotherapy administered during the first 2.5-3 years of remission resulted in a 2.2--fold decrease in recurrence rate and a 21.4% rise in five-year survival rate in patients with stage Ia and Ib cancer.

ABSTRACT

The paper deals with the analysis of reasons for repeat surgery in 242 patients who had undergone sparing operations on the inner genitals for tumors of various origin. In 121, sparing surgery had been performed for benign tumor of the ovary whereas in 70--for underdiagnosed malignancy. At the time of the first operation, 55 patients were more than 45 years of age; 33 of them subsequently died of advanced ovarian cancer. Out of 187 cases who had been operated on at younger age, 37.9% subsequently underwent surgery for malignant tumor of the second ovary. The origin and histological pattern of ovarian tumor should be considered when choosing the extent of surgery. Cases of sparing surgery for ovarian tumors should be followed-up.

ABSTRACT

The report deals with the results of a study of 60 cases of proliferating and 106-malignant tumors of the ovaries treated according to a special rehabilitation program for 1.5-10 years after primary therapy. The effectiveness of post-treatment medical rehabilitation was shown to depend on the following major factors: patient's age, concomitant pathology, stage of disease, type and duration of therapy. Combined treatment-induced functional disturbances remained manifest in 31.6-80.6% of patients for more than a year. Recommendations for wider application of medical rehabilitation of ovarian cancer patients are discussed.

ABSTRACT

The paper presents the results of intratumoral chemotherapy of 32 cases of single metastases of stage III-IV ovarian cancer into the Douglas pouch. The metastases were detected at different stages after primary treatment. Thiotepa, cyclophosphamide, sarcolysin and methotrexate were administered in 81.2, 9.4, 6.2 and 3.1% of cases, respectively. A clinically-significant effect was recorded in 14 out of 32 cases (43.7%); tumor process was arrested in 15 cases (46.9%); treatment failed in 3 cases (9.4%). Toxic side-effects were less frequent and pronounced than in patients given standard systemic monochemotherapy.

ABSTRACT

The clinical picture and primary diagnosis of 739 benign, 114 border-case and 115 early-stage malignant ovarian tumors are discussed. It was established that 8.4-11% of patients had detected tumors themselves by palpation. The detection of tumors by a considerable number of patients provided a basis for developing practical recommendations on self-examination procedures, which include inspection of the abdomen, surface and deep palpation. Application of these procedures will contribute to better diagnosis of ovarian cancer.

ABSTRACT

The author reports epidemiological and clinical data on 739 patients with benign epithelial ovarian tumors of various histotypes. Serous cystadenomas were found in 46%, mucinous--in 25.3%, endometroid--in 20%, mixed epithelial--in 6.7%, the Brenner tumor--in 2.02%. Benign ovarian tumors are more frequently observed at the age from 31 to 60. The patients show the tendency to the late menstrual cycle and reduced reproductive function. The clinical picture of the lesion is described.
